Northern Links to China

The National Trust of Queensland’s 2014 Heritage Festival is now in full swing with over 100 events across Queensland for you to enjoy.

The Fifth “no fuss” Conference organised by Chinese Heritage in Northern Australia Inc took place in Cairns in February. Entitled “Northern Links: Chinese Networks and Nation”, the many papers explored the rich Chinese heritage of the northern regions of Australia.

The nine First Directors of the company have been selected and are members of the current National Trust Council and the Board of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Trust News goes digital

The National Register of Significant Trees is now up and running and can be found at www.trusttrees.org.au Also, the National Trust of Queensland’s Heritage Register is being uploaded to our website in stages, and our first Australian Curriculum Schools Programs for Wolston House and Royal Bull’s Head Inn are there as well.

From 2014, electronic versions of Trust News magazine and Trust Newsletter will be available on our website.

This is part of the Trust’s shift towards the better utilisation of technology to provide information for our members and supporters.

The advantages of using electronic media to distribute information include avoiding the escalating costs of printing and distribution, providing more timely information, having more flexibility in formats and lay-outs and also saving a few trees.

All Queensland National Trust members, including Green Guardian members, will still receive printed copies of the magazine and newsletter until June 2014.

The topics covered by the papers frequently highlighted the great difficulties faced

by Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century in entering Australia, pursuing their business interests and returning to visit their families in China or reuniting with them in Australia. Of great interest to anyone from Cooktown were the papers dealing with the heritage of that region, particularly that of Darryl Low Choy, whose family travelled to the Palmer River Goldfields in the early days of the rush. Stephen Gapps from the Australian National Maritime Museum also offered a tantalising insight into Chinese boat building activities during the early years of the settlement in Cooktown. Jonathan Richards explored the fascinating practice of Chinese exhumations and repatriation in Queensland, while Carol Chong shared her own family’s experience of Aboriginal and Chinese kinship, an intriguing and relatively hitherto neglected area of Chinese/Australian history.

As well as attending the paper sessions, delegates had the opportunity to take part in several tours of significant Chinese heritage sights, including Cairns Chinatown, with a viewing of the beautiful Lit Sung Goong Temple artefacts, and the National Trust Hou Wang Miau Temple at Atherton. The conference demonstrated the increasing enthusiasm and interest for this previously neglected area of northern Australian heritage. We look forward with interest to the next instalment.

The Art of Building Conservation Presented by: National Trust of Queensland An afternoon seminar at Brisbane City Hall which will explore the recent work of some of our local heritage architects. The key speaker will be Megan Jones of Tanner Kibble Denton Architects Pty Ltd discussing the Brisbane City Hall conservation project, which won the National Trust’s John Herbert Memorial Award for 2013. The building, threatened by a range of structural and functional problems, was meticulously conserved, restored and upgraded to meet current standards and demands.

The National Trust of Queensland and the Queensland Heritage Council invite individuals, businesses, government authorities, professional bodies and community organisations to nominate projects for the 2014 Heritage Awards.

The Awards recognise the range of cultural heritage work that takes place across all areas of the State, including conservation planning, research, education, all types of physical conservation works on structures or places, as well as interpretation or presentations.

The Queensland Heritage Awards are held in recognition of John D. Herbert MLA, President of the National Trust of Queensland, 19711974. Awards presentations will be held at an official function later in the year. There is no nomination fee. Nominations close Friday 4 July 2014.
