Journeys 18 April – 18 May
Acknowledgement of Country The Western Australian Heritage Festival acknowledges the traditional owners of the land these events will be held on. The Festival acknowledges and respects their continuing culture and contribution they make to the life of Western Australia.
Welcome to the 2014 Western Australian Heritage Festival
We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Australian Government through the Department of the Environment National Trust Partnership Program.
In this, it’s third year, the Western Australian Heritage Festival is spreading to new regions and towns and offering entertainment and learning experiences to all who participate. The Journey’s theme has attracted a host of events and activities and I sincerely invite you to take your own journey of discovery.
Thank you to our Supporters:
In 2013, people attended over 140 events developing an appreciation for Australia’s heritage and also for that of their local communities. I am pleased to report this has resulted in almost 170 events this year and a number of communities organising their own local inaugural heritage festivals to be held within this programme, including, Laverton, Kalgoorlie, Beverley, Geraldton, Merredin and Albany.
Readers are advised that this programme contains images of people who have passed away.
Thank you to our Partners:
Please take the time to read your Festival programme or visit the new online Festival calendar at www.nationaltrustfestival.org.au which contains extra information about events and where you can create your own Festival itinerary. Officially launching the Festival is the Margaret Feilman Retrospective Exhibition. I hope you enjoy this special one off event, highlighting the legacy of a true pioneer in architecture and town planning here in Western Australia and above all, a true heritage advocate. The Festival is a collective effort of sponsors, staff, volunteers, event holders and the community. Our thanks are extended to all those involved and to our partners and sponsors for their support. Max Kay AM CitWA President, National Trust of Australia (WA)

Over the Waters to Northbridge
Villers-Bretonneux: France to Australia
Journeys, Between River & Sea
Presented by St Johns Church Northbridge
Presented by St George’s Cathedral
Presented by The Grove Library
Welcome asylum-seekers to Northbridge and remember their journeys from the 1940s to present day. A colourful performance of people coming ‘over the waters’ from villages in Europe, paddy fields in Asia and shanty towns in Africa. With song, music and dance, an event to celebrate a multicultural community. Refreshments with a taste of the flavours of the world.
Commemorate the WA troops who fought at the Battle of VillersBretonneux with a book launch and French wine & cheese reception. ‘The Promise: the town that never forgets’ focuses on the relationship between WA and Villers-Bretonneux. The Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in 1916 saw WA troops retake this small French village from the enemy. In the words of one general, they “saved France”. The Villers-Bretonneux Cross made from the timbers of a French church is WA’s most important WWI artefact.
View historic photographs portraying life in Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove and Mosman Park. Many people have called the Western Suburbs home. Some were just passing through, some starting their new life and others settled and never left. The event celebrates the journeys of these people and encourages them to share their experiences of life between river and sea.
