Internship Program This internship is part of the Native Youth Wellness Initiative, a project committed to finding ways to encourage youth to embrace life. The position is a 6-month stipend internship for American Indian/Alaska Native/Hawaiian Native youth between the ages of 14-24. The internship is designed to cultivate the development of critical thinking in regards to social, political, and historical issues. Youth will be presented a variety of significant topics through a bi-weekly film series. They will be encouraged to dialogue within a group setting after watching each film to develop their thoughts, perspectives and beliefs. Interns will develop mentoring relationships with staff from various disciplines, as well as supportive relationships with fellow interns.

Native Youth Wellness Initiative The Native Youth Wellness Initiative is project that values cultural identity, relationships, and experiences that engage the two. This project seeks to provide youth with opportunities for creative expression as an essential part of the health of young people. Through various projects, youth are actively supporting each other to decrease the risk of suicide. Interns will contribute to future efforts and offer insight and feedback on current projects.

Commitment Interns will attend weekly meetings, beginning in January and ending in July. Interns will identify an area of interest and create a workshop for the community (ex: family focus, ecological focus, social justice focus, art focus). Interns will select and participate in 3 Community Events over the course of 6-months. Interns will assist in efforts to outreach to other indigenous youth within their schools and communities. Interns will be responsible for maintaining the Cultural Community Library, which includes devoting 2 hours every two weeks to check out books/movies/media to the community. Interns can contribute music or writings or create events to increase community access. Interns will be advisors to the Native Youth Wellness Initiative and be responsible for maintaining the You Are The Future tumblr site.

Position: Native Youth Wellness Initiative Intern Department: Community Wellness Department Location: 3124 International Blvd. Oakland, CA Reports to: Kateri Chiu and Virgil Moorehead Work Hours: Wednesday 3:30pm-5:00pm and selected Community Events

Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Interns will attend weekly meetings, every Wednesday from 3:30-5:00pm beginning in January and ending in July. 2. Interns will identify an area of interest and work alone or with others to create a workshop for the community (ex: family focus, ecological focus, social justice focus, art focus). 3. Interns will select and participate in 2 Community Events, including the Cultural Exchange Program, over the course of 6-months. 4. Interns will assist in efforts to outreach to other indigenous youth within their schools and communities. 5. Interns will be responsible for maintaining the Cultural Community Library, which includes devoting 2 hours every two weeks to check out books/movies/media to the community. Interns can contribute music or writings or create events to increase community access. 6. Interns will be advisors to the Native Youth Wellness Initiative and be responsible for maintaining the You Are The Future Tumblr site. Qualifications: 1. Willingness to commit to the six month duration of the internship program. 2. Desire to work within a group setting to strengthen the Native Youth Wellness Initiative and support current projects.


3. Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults. 4. Familiarity with issues that impact the Oakland and Bay Area communities and the American Indian community. ****If there is any evidence indicating that you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol you will be terminated from the program. There will be zero tolerance for behavior that threatens the safety of others in the program, and this will result in termination of participation in the internship program. ____I accept the responsibilities listed and I agree to perform the duties listed on this job description to the best of my abilities. ____I agree that stipends will be distributed based on my attendance, performance and involvement in the NYWI Internship Program.
