IN MY DESIGN I’VE INCORPORATED THE COMMON ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES THAT ARE NECESSARY IN A MOSQUE: THE MIHRAB, ABLUTION FACILITES, AND THE PRAYER HALL. ALL OTHER FEATURES, ALTHOUGH BEAUTIFUL, COULD BE CONSIDERED AS EMBELLISHMENTS IN THE AMERICAN CONTEXT. THE HYPOSTYLE MOSQUES (ONE OF THE MOST COMMON STYLES) ARE CHARACTERIZED BY ROWS OF COLUMNS ORGANIZED IN A GRID. PRAYER IS HELD WITHIN THE COLUMN BAYS. MY DESIGNS BREAKS AWAY FROM THIS STYLE IN THAT MY ORGANIZATION WAS NOT BASED ON OR SWAYED BY THE EXISTING STRUCTURAL COLUMNS.

CONCEPT + PROCESS This space provides an atmosphere that promotes connectivity and deconstructs traditional barriers within the worship practice and activities in a mosque. A series of planar elements, create open spaces through which users can move and observe freely; these planes have varying degrees of transparency (e.g. perforations, treated glass, etc) in order to promote a more inclusive experience with as few barriers as possible. A rotated grid adhering to the Qibla direction (direction of prayer) has organized these planes horizontally, creating spaces for prayer, ablution (ritual cleansing), and smaller areas for reflection.

DUE TO THE SPACES INTENDED GENDERNEUTRALITY THE AIM WITH SELECTING A COLOR PALETTE WAS TO STAY AWAY FROM COLORS THAT SUGGEST MASCULINITY OR FEMINITY. IN THE CONTEXT OF AMERICAN CULTURE BLUE AND PINK REPRESENT MALE AND FEMALE, AND IN A MORE UNIVERSAL CONTEXT BLACK AND WHITE ARE INHERENT OPPOSITES. THE MAIN COLORS CHOSEN, GREY AND PURPLE, ARE THE BLEND OF THESE SETS OF BINARY COLORS.

EXPLODED AXON WALL TREATMENTS ARE BASED ON THE ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEM USED. WALLS FALLING ON THE ROTATED GRID (QUIBLA GRID) ARE TRANSLUCENT. WALLS FALLING ON THE ISLAMIC GEOMETRIC PATTERN ARE TRANSPARENT. THE ONLY OPAQUE WALLS ARE PLUMBING WALLS AND RESTROOM PARTITONS FOR NECESSARY PRIVACY.

DETAILS: PRAYER HALL THE DESIGN OF PERFORATED WALLS ENCLOSING THE PRAYER HALL IS BASED OFF OF THE KUFIC ARABIC DESIGN OF SURAT-UL FATIHA (THE OPENING). THE QUIBLA WALL IS THE ORIGINAL PRAYER, SIGNIFYING USERS’ DEDICATION TO THEIR RELIGION. THE PATTERNS CREATED BY THE ARABIC CHARACTERS ARE ABSTRACTED IN FORM AND SCALE THE FURTHER AWAY FROM THE QUIBLA WALL THEY ARE, REPRESENTING THEIR WAY OF THOUGHT: PROGRSSIVE YET HEAVILY INSPIRED BY ISLAM.
