UPGRADED LIVING would like to remind you to please shop locally this holiday season

FROM THE EDITOR DECEMBER 2011 THE HOLIDAYS ARE FINALLY UPON US AND WE COULDN’T BE MORE EXCITED! In November we launched the first half of our first ever Holiday Buyer’s Guide, opened the doors to our brand new home at 301 Broadway Street in downtown Chico, previewed our new joint venture with the Friends of the Arts, Gallery 301, during Christmas Preview, had the honor to play with two amazing African lion cubs and had our first 64 page magazine drop into over 500 locations throughout Chico, Paradise and Oroville. Phew! It was a BUSY month, and it looks like we’ll be doing it all over again in December! In this month’s issue we have the final half of the Holiday Buyer’s Guide and a reminder to go out and get all of your golden tickets before it’s too late! Drawings begin on December 15th and will continue until our grand prize drawings on Christmas Day! Instructions for the Holiday Buyer’s Guide are on page 37. We’re also featuring some of our favorite local businesses around town in this issue and are previewing the launch of our new medical section with doctors Nelsen, Woods and Commendatore! Make sure you give their columns a read, as they all provide excellent information for this holiday season! Finally, we would like to thank everyone who made the build out of our new space downtown possible. To say it was a team effort would be putting it lightly. Without the following individuals’ work ethic and dedication to helping complete the space, we would not have made it anywhere close to completion in the time we did. Upgraded Living would like to sincerely thank Debra Lucero & The Friends of the Arts, Norton Construction, Duck Back Products, Wolfe Electric, Dragon Graphics, Tim Golden, Beiron Andersson, Brandon Squyres, Michelle Camy, Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation, Emily Spesert, Miranda Austin, Erin Wenham, Desiree DeLattré, Tessa Daugherty, Alexandra Andersson, Glenn Baumgartner, Amelia Lamarr, Chikoko, Bidwell Perk and Bacio Catering for their tireless work. Thank you all for being a part of the Upgraded Living family, we hope you love this new issue like we do and that you have a very happy holiday season!

Gateway Science Fundraiser The Gateway Science Museum hosted “An Evening to Treasure” fundraiser on November 12, 2011, a benefit dinner to support adding activities and resources to the Gateway Science Museum. The event was completely sold out with 200 guests joining in on the fun, and we were lucky enough to have

been invited to attend. Between the silent auction, the treasure quest, and the awesome live auction hosted by friend of the magazine, Aaron Stewart, the museum benefit raised well over the original goal set at $50,000. The food was delicious, the auction items were enviable and some of our closest

Thank You Small Business Owners! Financial advice from Renee Michel, MBA, Financial Consultant

Small businesses are so important to our community and their success benefits us all. Did you know that small busi-

nesses are responsible for 39 percent of GDP and employ 54.4 million people in the United States? In Chico, the small businesses that line our streets and fill our home offices create jobs, generate revenue and bring resources to you and me. Business owners are responsible for their employees, their books, they manage people, time and inventories but most importantly, they provide a product or service that serves a need. It’s a job that requires a lot of time and effort and the dividends the community receives are abundant. Your community thanks you for taking the initiative and having the guts to start your business, but don’t forget to thank yourselves and your employees for your success! With interior design pro, Melissa Snow

Dear Melissa, It really got cold fast this year for us Chicoans, which really inspired me to start decorating for xmas. Do you have any fun, quick tips or ideas for the season?

- KIM Dear Kim, The big question a lot of people seem to have is how to decorate for the holidays. My best advice is to not necessarily decorate for Christmas but to focus on decorating for winter. Many aren’t going to see a live flower blooming outdoors for at least three months. We’ll have our fireplaces blazing until February. Keeping with winter themes works great to extend your seasonal décor. Here are a few suggestions: Use trees, snowflakes, greenery for holiday decor. As long as it doesn’t pertain directly to Christmas - Santas, Rudolph, Nutcrackers or says “Merry Christmas” - it’s going to be okay to keep out for the winter months. Sweater pillows on the sofa will bring a cozy element to any room. These are definitely popular this year! Layer sofas with plush throws. Nothing screams cuddle up next to a fire more than a fluffy throw and a few good books on an end table. Pinecones can still be used throughout the months of January and February. I thought this was a really cute way to display pinecones. Wintery wreaths are great and you can even keep a few of those holly berries in them for some color. Here is one last idea using your mantle. Even though “Baby it’s Cold Outside” is a Christmas song I don’t see anything wrong with using this throughout January since it is indeed cold outside. Remember, you can’t go wrong with candles lit in those pretty mercury votive holders. Mine are staying out for a while! Have fun and don’t be afraid to think outside the box. We would love to see other creative ideas our fabulous readers have. Please submit ideas and pictures to facebook.com/ upgradedliving where we’d love to her about and view your holiday decor.

DIY trees for the winter months

HOME

By Melissa Snow

hese trees are a fun, quick and inexpensive winter craft that can be used as your décor well beyond the holidays! You will need three different height pieces of trunk. (Recommended 5”, 9” and 12” in height.) All the cuts need to be clean and you may need to trial and error their ability to stand up. Don’t worry if there are stubbles of branches or anything, that actually ends up being really great. You will also need a hot glue gun and some green felt. I used a cream and white felt as well as rustic burlap. Have fun with the color variation, anything would work. PRE-CUT some felt into rectangles so that you can glue all at the same time, pieces should have variations in sizes. NOW CUT ONE LARGE TRIANGLE out of felt to use as your gluing base. Use your trunk to measure the size of this and tack it onto your wood trunk. Leave the bottom flaired out, like you are putting a skirt on your tree. Then, you start from the bottom. PUT GLUE ON ONE OF THE SHORT SIDES OF YOUR FELT PIECE and attach to the felt background. Continue, but remember to overlap your pieces. Also remember to use all the colors randomly and work all the way around your trees. TOPS CAN BE AS POINTY as you would like. Use some of the smaller rectangles to overlap up there. AND HERE THEY ARE AS PART OF OUR WINTER MANTLE THIS MONTH….HAPPY CRAFTING!! 11

Monk’s little secret Downtown Chico’s Original Wine Bar is Expanding by Desireé DeLattre

Step out of the holiday hustle and treat yourself to an evening escape at Monk’s Wine Lounge in the heart of Chico. The glass is always “halffull,” and you will be totally satisfied from their homemade pasta dinners, tantalizing tapas, and fresh, locally grown produce tossed into savory salads. But before you work up an appetite, here are some things you should know about Chico’s very own “diamond in the rough.” Monk’s Wine Lounge was brought to life in Chico, CA around five and a half years ago, founded on the principles of Italian tradition, the passion of winemaking, and impeccable service. Recipes from the town of Luca, Italy were passed down to accompany wine collections from around the world, giving Chico the taste of elegance that it had been craving. With the recent addition of a commercial kitchen and upcoming interior make-

12

over by Dolce Home, Monk’s is ready to present an entirely new flavor that will turn any average night downtown into an unforgettable restaurant experience. Although Monk’s has the reputation of being one of the top date spots for Chico’s vino enthusiasts, most are unaware of the special events, promotions, and products offered for just about anyone. From non-alcoholic wines and beer, a game of scrabble on cozy couches, to book clubs and cooking and wine education classes, Monk’s has just the right ingredients to please anyone looking for a good time. Looking for a last minute center piece or gift? Monk’s has you covered with customizable gift baskets, wine-tasting packages, “wine-bottle hurricanes”, and a wide selection of international and domestic wines. In reality, not everyone enjoys the juice of the vine. For those who would rather sip a Sierra Nevada, Monk’s delivers with a cold one for your enjoyment. However,

for the rest who wish to expand their palates via vino, the Passport Club may be of interest. The club is completely free to join, and costs just $10 per person to participate in the weekly tastings of wine from around the globe paired with appetizers. Gatherings are on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m., and your Monk’s “passport” is stamped each time you attend. Once a passport is filled up, a Magnum bottle of wine is awarded to it’s “traveler.” However, if your Wednesdays have no room for the red and white journey, stop by on Tuesday or Sunday for all night happy hour prices. Whether it’s a quiet, two hour vacation or a business event, Monk’s Wine Lounge provides the utmost quality with the highest degree of dedication to food, wine, and service. Let the grapes be your guide to a dining experience that will have you rethinking the way a meal should be enjoyed. Reservations fill up quick, so call (530) 343-3408 to book yours tonight!

Wondrous Women featuring

Kathryn Sheppard by Aveed Khaki

pgraded Living Magazine and Wondrous Women of Chico have teamed up to feature a new local wondrous woman in each issue of our magazine. December’s local Wondrous Woman is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Kathryn Sheppard is a cancer survivor and has been since she was diagnosed with leukemia at age 8 in 1983. After undergoing chemotherapy for three long years, interrupting much of the short childhood she had experienced, her doctors declared her cancer to be in remission and she was given a new lease on life. Originally from San Jose, Kathryn’s parents’ divorce during her early childhood years coupled with her fight against cancer caused her to grow up incredibly quickly. Conquering a number of extreme challenges at such an early age, no doubt, created the drive that pushed Kathryn to Cal Poly University where she received her first set of degrees in Ag Science and Communications and later to Chico State where she received her teaching credential that ultimately led to her acceptance of a teaching position at a local elementary school. To say that Kathryn is “accomplished” is simply an understatement. Since receiving her teaching credential she has risen to the position of Board President for the Biggs Unified

14

School District, opened “Lessons Learned,” a preschool in Biggs, coled her daughter’s girl scout troop and maintains the bookkeeping for the four businesses operated between herself and her husband. Furthermore, she plays an active role in the Okizu Foundation, a charitable foundation that provides week-long camping experiences for children and families of children with childhood cancer. Most recently, Kathryn opened the doors to her new store Serendipity Unique Gifts & Home Decor in Gridley, adding yet another iron to the fire. As she puts it, “It’s the ultimate chick store.” Decked out in candles, jewelry, gourmet food, unique hand crafted home decor and baby items, the store exudes chick chic and has already gathered a die-hard following through its focus on responsibility to the communities surrounding it. From the looks of things we can’t imagine that will change anytime soon. Kathryn is an inspiration and proof that regardless of what life may throw at you, strength, determination and faith in your own abilities will help you overcome your obstacles. It is without a doubt in our minds that many great experiences still lay ahead of her. If you’re in the Gridley area, pop your head into her store at 860 Hazel Street and say hi; her enthusiasm is infectious and if your experience is anything like ours, you’ll leave with a huge smile on your face.

New York fashion in Downtown Chico by Aveed Khaki photographs by Erin Wenham

staple of downtown Chico’s fashion community, Anne Marie and Michael Peters have been helping locals and those visiting our town look their best for nearly 12 years. Originally from Long Island, New York, Anne Marie was working for Bloomingdale’s flagship store when she met Michael through mutual friends. Michael, a Chico State student at the time, was helping a friend move across the country. The two hit it off, Anne Marie moved to Chico to join Michael shortly thereafter and they have been here ever since. Opening its doors in 2000, Kreations quickly made a name for itself as the first boutique to carry premium denim in the Chico area. Utilizing what she had learned during her time working at Bloomingdale’s in New York, Anne Marie made the decision early-on to focus on customer service above all else, offering customers a pair of outside eyes and helping them find what worked best for their body type. The reputation stuck and soon Kreations was frequented not only by day-to-day shoppers, but also by previous customers setting appointments with Anne Marie as a personal shopper. It was the building of these relationships that fostered the

16

loyalty any boutique needs to remain successful, and the fact that the store hasn’t moved or changed form in nearly twelve years is proof of that success. Designers have taken notice of that success as well. When Sinclair Denim, created by acclaimed designer Vincent Flumiani, decided to sell their first line to only 50 boutiques, Kreations in Chico was one of them. Over the years, Kreations has become what Anne Marie calls “a boutique for the masses.” Not only can you find some of the more sought after premium denim lines here, like Hudson, Citizens and True Religion, but you’ll also find amazingly affordable pairings in their selection of tops, bottoms and accessories. “The purpose of our store,” as Anne Marie puts it “is to help people put great looking outfits together that don’t cost an arm and a leg.” The racks towards the front of the store speak volumes to this statement with tops starting at $20 and dresses at $30. Whether you’re looking for the perfect outfit for a night on the town, or helping a family member find that unique outfit for a high school dance, Kreations has the means to make the experience a complete success. Stop by their shop downtown this holiday season and see for yourself.

A modern space in the forest by Aveed Khaki

ur intrepid builder of modern spaces, Eric Enns, is at it again. This time, he’s building the adult version of our childhood dream fort, and he’s building it just up the road in Paradise. Boasting a total building height of 14 feet, this space will prove to be anything but stuffy when completed. As a result of its 120 square foot footprint, the space did not require permitting, thereby saving the buyer considerable costs in having it built. Certain exceptions do exist, but for the most part in Butte County, buildings with footprints 120 square feet and smaller don’t require permits. This being said, it is completely feasible to build up to 240 square feet of living space vertically and potentially have the entire project built permit free. Though one may elect to do so for electrical purposes or should they be interested in a space larger than 120 square feet. The space is currently in the framing stages, set upon its slab foundation. Once completed, a combination of wood siding and corrugated metal will properly set the space off with the modern flare so akin to Eric’s other projects. The completion date is set at less than a few weeks away, so you can be sure we’ll follow up with the finished product in our January issue. We’ll look forward to seeing you back here then!

Keeping Chico clean since 1959 by Aveed Khaki Photographs by Erin Wenham

leanrite-Buildrite has been “doing it right” in Northern California for 52 years. Locally owned and operated, this cleaning and disaster restoration company has grown by leaps and bounds in the half century it has been around, now serving communities from Sacramento to the Oregon border east of Interstate 5. Not only has its reach grown, but so too has its list of services. Started in 1959, Cleanrite set out to ensure the cleanliness of northern California’s carpets as a one-man carpet cleaning service run by Verne Andreasen. Soon thereafter, his son Dan decided to expand the company’s offerings, and began providing emergency services and construction restoration throughout northern California. He combined the company’s two sets of offerings and Cleanrite-Buildrite was born. Since then, CleanriteBuildrite has been the saving grace for some of the most remembered disasters in the area; most recently the fire that decimated Tres Hombres, the flood that destroyed much of the Garden Walk Mall downtown and the hailstorm that tore into Courtesy Motors’ roof, spilling water over the showroom below. Though Cleanrite-Buildrite has earned a reputation for being a proverbial guardian angel during times of extreme crisis, the original passion of their work comes from their carpet cleaning services and the education they provide therein. The majority of us don’t think to clean our carpets until they begin to look dirty. On the other hand, there are those of us who are so worried about the

18

cleanliness of the floors we walk upon, that we spend money on machines that promise to allow us to “deep clean” our own carpets. The fact is, that by the time our carpets look dirty, they’ve already begun to deteriorate, and unfortunately for those who’ve spent an arm and a leg on cleaning machines, they’ll find that they tend to over-saturate carpets with water that they cannot properly remove thereafter, leaving the carpet wet for days and vulnerable to mold and mildew which also causes deterioration. Unbeknownst to many, a simple call to CleanriteBuildrite would have provided that information free of charge. Likewise, a simple house-call would have made the cleanup of those dirty carpets or upholstery completely stress free. Over the years Cleanrite-Buildrite has built an ironclad reputation through educating their clients, training and deploying only the most skilled of technicians, utilizing the latest technologies and paying close attention to what their customers have to say. In fact, their customers rate them at 97.7% fully satisfied with their quality of work and a simple visit to yelp will find their company at a five star rating. With such accolades, it is no surprise that they are considered the go-to company for residential and business customers alike throughout Northern California. Whether family and friends are coming into town and an embarrassing pre-existing mess exists, or they’re on the way out and leaving a wake of destruction in their departure, add CleanriteBuildrite to your speed dial this holiday season to take the stress out of the cleanup. Your friends and family will thank you and chances are, so will your blood pressure! Cleanrite Buildrite 530-891-0333

Wildlife foundation in Oroville! Visit and be blown away by the presence of many species of majestic creatures, great and small, just a 20 minute drive from Chico Originally founded by Barry Kirshner in 1994, the sanctuary became home to animals who needed some “extra care” to live a long and happy life. Unfortunately, Barry’s life was cut short a year after establishing the foundation in a tragic car accident, but his dream lives on. Barry’s love for wild animals is very much alive through his mother, Roberta Kirshner, who has carried his spirit and has made the foundation the only one of its kind in Northern California. Since it’s birth, The Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation has appeared at countless events and various television shows, such as the Jay Leno Show, Access Hollywood, and Jimmy Kimmel.

Bring the kids, your co workers, or your students and be in awe at the powerful gaze of Sean, a white, Siberian-Bengal Tiger who was rescued as a cub. “Chill out with Chuma, the African Leopard whose name means “money maker.” A handsome young star, he Graced the Chelsea Lately Show with his divine appearance. If you’re not a cat-lover, spend time with the bears, reptiles, and other exotic animals you are guaranteed not to run into on your average trip to Upper Bidwell. Walk-through tours take around 2 to 2 and a half hours each and will enable you to see and learn more about some of the world’s most endangered animals. Prices are $9 dollars for adults and $6 dollars for children 12 and under. Though it may seem that the Foundation has got it all, the animals are in great need of your help. Whether it’s a small

donation from your family or business, a full sponsorship, or an internship, you can be the difference between an endangered species and a thriving life. All sponsorships benefit not only an animal, but you or your business as well. Receive discounts, special group deals, and another reason to smile when you “adopt” an animal this coming year. If you’re interested in animal science, construction, or education, internships of up to 9 transferable units are available for application. If an internship isn’t what you’re looking for, volunteer positions are also available for those who wish to be a part of the foundation’s team. However you choose to do it, being involved in these beautiful creatures’ lives is an amazing and valuable experience. Listen to your inner “wild” and head out to Kirshner for some big love!

Michelle Camy by Aveed Khaki

Born and raised in Chico, Michelle Camy found her first introduction to art at only two years of age. Beginning with watercolor experimentation, Michelle focused on her passion for horses and eventually found her most comfortable form of artistic expression in acrylics. Following her graduation from Chico High School in 2000, Michelle traveled the world, making stops in Australia, Fiji, Canada, the Czech Republic, France and her personal favorite, Japan. Throughout her journey she found herself drawn to the differences in the myriad of local foods from each location she visited. The photography of these foods and the experiences obtained during her travels helped frame a new aspect of her art: the pursuit of presenting subjects in their own simple existence but from a point of view that anyone would find interesting. By portraying the commonplace in some of the least

traditional ways, Michelle has found her artistic center. From the bright and runny colors that comprise the majority of her pieces to the repurposing of old house paint and discarded paint at local home improvement stores, Michelle’s pieces stand out in more ways than one. Whether still life, portrait, western art or otherwise, her pieces prove themselves to be just as approachable as their creator and equally impressive. Michelle credits much of her current success to the continued encouragement from her boyfriend, Brandon Squyres and the influence of artists like Sophie Brown and Brenda Murphy. Her work can be found at Katie’s Corner and Country Squyres’ Fine Antiques in Downtown Chico. We’re excited to also have Michelle’s work on display at our new gallery downtown, located at 301 Broadway. One stop in and you’ll know exactly why.

Beiron Andersson by Aveed Khaki

Considered to be one of the world’s first male supermodels, Beiron Andersson has spent as much time in front of a camera as he has behind it. Born and raised in Sweden, he found his way to Durham, California as an exchange student at the age of 16, where he met his future wife Tina. After traveling back and forth between Europe and the states, Beiron and Tina settled down in Los Angeles where he was first spotted by a model scout. What followed was a decade and a half long whirlwind where he modeled for household names like Armani, Diesel, Prada, Guess?, and a host of others. The time spent modeling gave Beiron a unique understanding of the workings of the world of photography he was so immersed in. His interest soon turned into a hobby, and the hobby into a full-fledged career. He began calling upon the contacts he had made in the modeling industry and through his work with them quickly began honing his skills and carving out his own style and artistic flavor; through these experiences he quickly made a name for himself in the industry. Since his switch from subject to photographer, Beiron has travelled the globe photographing notable people, exotic locales and everything in between. From his position as the official photographer for the Professional Bull Riders Association to his time working with hip hop pioneers A Tribe Called Quest, Beiron has amassed a portfolio that spans genre after genre in brilliant detail. Most recently, Beiron decided to take a break from globe trotting with his camera in tow to spend more time with his wife and two kids at home, allowing him to focus on a number of unique projects locally. Beiron’s work is available online at his website, BeironAndersson.com and as of November 20th at 301 Broadway Street in downtown Chico at Gallery 301.

IS IMPROVING THE LIFESTYLE OF VISION By Dr. David Woods, MD ew technology improves our lives when it crosses into the mainstream and becomes safe for everyday use in patients lives. It’s a fascinating perspective to sit at the crossroad of patient care and new technology coming into medical practice. Vision care and eye surgery are similar to other fields of rapidly improving technology. Already the past 10 years have seen more newly approved lasers and newly approved lens implants than the previous 30 years combined. A few new technologies are worth mentioning, and making an impact in exam lanes today. First, “all-laser” LASIK has shown in my experience to be a boon to patient results for faster healing, well centered flaps, and happy patients. The reliability of surgeon controlled laser treatment at the moment of cutting is very exciting. The corneal LASIK flaps using femtosecond laser are extremely well centered and uniform in my experience. This technology has been around for over 5 years, but the costs have decreased and now improved patient access. All-laser LASIK has been an advancement and improved the patient experience in our office. Second, new technology lens implants for cataract surgery can improve lifestyle with less need for glasses after cataract removal. The latest models of

44

lens implants are improved in their accuracy of reducing astigmatism and improving focus. An astigmatism reducing lens implant is a called a ‘toric’ intraocular lens. Toric lens implants are set for a single focal point, and for now are not designed to provide a range of vision without using glasses to do so. I have patients that enjoy using Monovision (a distance eye and a near eye) and use toric lenses to improve focus and vision. Another improving lens implant category is the presbyopiacorrecting lens implants. These lifestyle lenses reduce dependence on glasses by providing focus both far and near vision with less need for glasses. I believe the revolution for improved focus after cataract surgery is related to the precise measurements enabled by new imaging equipment of the eye. Picking the right lens implant power becomes easier as measurement precision improves. It is fun to be a cataract surgeon provided your patients are happy, and new technology makes that much more common than not. The next wave of new technology lens implants for cataract surgery is coming down the pipeline, being tried in Europe, Asia, and South America. I am personally excited for future possibilities of new technology and eye surgery. Meeting patients expectations and hopes is a journey of discovery, and technology is opening windows to new possibilities.

Holiday De-stress By Vincent Commendatore, D.C., B.S.N., R.N.

tress is an unavoidable fact of life, and with the holiday season many of us experience an increase in stress. Unfortunately, there is no way to totally remove stress from our lives. However, there are multiple things we can do to minimize the effects of stress. Stress comes in three flavors: physical, emotional and chemical. Being able to identify these stressors can help us learn to avoid them. Physical stress can come from accidents, repetitive motion injuries or even poor posture. Emotional stress can come from your job, your finances, or your family. Chemical stress is usually found in your diet, environmental pollutants or too many glasses of eggnog. The risks of not managing and recuperating from your stress are an increase in heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes and on and on. How’s that for a stressor? Thankfully, there is action you can take to de-stress your life. Finding balance within the Five Pillars of Health is the perfect place to start. They are: proper nutrition, exercise, positive attitude, rest and a healthy frame and nervous system. The holidays are full of tasty foods, but try to avoid excess sugar (carbohydrates), processed foods and trans-fats. Eat REAL food, nothing your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food. Get some form of exercise everyday for at least 30 minutes. Try your best to stay positive and take time for yourself, breath and relax. Plan your day so that you get 6-8 hours of uninterrupted, natural sleep. Come to Chico Spine & Wellness and get the health of your frame and nervous system checked and corrected. Putting even a small amount of attention to each of the Pillars of Health will allow your body to better manage the day to day stress you encounter, and the extra stress that comes with the holidays. All the best for a de-stressed holiday!

ach and every day we find ourselves inundated with information about which foods to eat and which to steer clear of. They seem to change with the wind though; coming and going as fads often do. What is interesting, however, is the lack of attention to paid to dangers that do have scientifically proven links to conditions that can ultimately usher in an untimely end. One such link is that between gum disease and heart disease. Soft gums or gums that bleed when flossed may seem like more of a nuisance than something to be taken seriously. In fact, most people tend to see flossing as a nuisance itself. It often isn’t until I introduce my patients to the link between gum disease and heart disease that they finally realize the importance of maintaining proper gum care. There are numerous theories to explain the link between the two diseases; the most likely of these theories is that bacteria present in your mouth from improper care of your gums enters the bloodstream and ultimately finds its way to your heart. Once there it may attach to fatty plaques in your heart’s blood vessels and cause the formation of a clot which may restrict the amount of oxygen and nutrients to your heart as well as create an obstruction to the normal flow of blood in and out of your heart. Such conditions can lead to an untimely heart attack. Gum disease can also worsen existing heart conditions, so those with such conditions should be especially mindful of proper gum care. Researchers recently found that people with gum disease are nearly twice as likely to experience some form of coronary artery disease within their lifetime compared to those without gum disease. During this time of year, when eating seems to be almost as common as breathing, do yourself a favor and carry some floss in your pocket or purse and remember to floss regularly, preferably after each meal. Not only will your breath smell better and your teeth look brighter, but your heart will be healthier and happier too.

Arranging smiles one flower at a time by Aveed Khaki

achelle Nyswonger has been in the floral industry for nearly twenty one years and from the list of accolades and client testimonials attached to both her name and her flower shop, Flowers by Rachelle, it is evident that not a single one of those years was taken for granted. Originally from Sacramento, Rachelle spent her high school years learning the floral trade while working in a local florist’s shop. After graduating, Rachelle decided to move to Chico to follow her dreams of becoming a teacher, enrolling in Chico State’s liberal studies program. However, upon entering the credential program, she quickly found that she spent more time thinking about the arrangements she would make at work than the curriculum being taught in class. She knew it was time for a change and decided to exit the path she was on to become a teacher in favor of pursuing her original

46

passion in floral artistry. In 1997, Rachelle opened Flowers by Rachelle from scratch, obtaining a loan from a local bank based largely on letters of recommendation and commitment from friends, family and previous clientele and spent the next year making well on her own commitment to the business by joining and attending every networking group and event she could possibly fit into her schedule. Through hard work and extreme perseverance she gathered her core clientele of fifty customers and word of her talents began to spread on its own. Located in the Raley’s-Skypark plaza, Flowers by Rachelle has now been doing business in the same Chico location for nearly fifteen years. Their once small group of local friend and family clientele has grown to encompass Chico, Paradise, Oroville and their surrounding communities, while their shop has quickly risen to one of the top 1,000 of teleflora shops throughout the world. Between the 75+

weddings they complete each year and the daily flower deliveries both local and international, it is amazing that this local flower shop can retain the small footprint it currently has. Most recently, Rachelle passed the American Institute of Floral Design’s (AIFD) certification exam, making her the only flower shop in town that is AIFD certified. In fact, there are currently only 1,500 AIFD certified florists in the world. Her induction to the institute will take place this coming July in Florida, and understandably, she couldn’t be more excited. Success stories like Rachelle’s make our business profile section an absolute blast to write. There’s nothing more exciting for us than to see local businesses like hers succeed and we’re always interested to hear stories about other local businesses doing the same. Stop on by this little shop in Chico and prepare to be impressed; one thing’s for sure: we were.

Duckback Products of Chico as well as Laurie Norton and his crew at Norton Construction were kind enough to join us in our new space at 301 Broadway Street in downtown Chico and completely transform what was once a boring and desolate expanse of cold gray concrete to what it is today. After a significant amount of sanding with high grit diamond blades, Laurie and his crew coated our once barren concrete floors with a few layers of Duckback’s Mason’s Select for Concrete transparent acrylic champagne concrete stain. By lightly layering the same product line’s terra cotta tint over the champagne foundation layers, Laurie was able to create a

truly variegated surface, giving the ground a somewhat 3-dimensional feel to it. Finally, the floor was sealed with Duckback’s clear acrylic satin concrete sealer for a look and feel that is simply out of this world. Needless to say, the space will never look quite the same again. We feel blessed to have such amazing partners locally and look forward to working with both Duckback and Norton Construction again in the very near future. In the meantime, should your needs include staining or finishing concrete, decks, or otherwise, may we suggest giving these two wonderful companies a call. Should our word not be enough to convince you, stop on by our office space and see their work for yourself. We’d be glad to show you around.

Make sure you have a shut off valve for your sprinkler system so you can drain your pipes before freezing temperatures, making sure the water doesn’t freeze inside and burst your pipes.

The approximate lawn watering schedule for Chico and surrounding areas throughout the winter should be once a week in December, once every 2 weeks in January, and once a week in February. 5

A unique solution to a mobile problem

business owners can obtain apps for their business at less than $100 per month

arker Leen was born and raised in Northern California; in fact, if you grew up or have spent any real time in Butte County, chances are you know someone in his extended family. After returning from school at San Luis Obispo, Parker decided to help a few friends launch smartphone apps for their businesses to introduce them to what the mobile world had to offer. After the first set of successful apps found their way through the various app stores, he decided that this very well could be his calling and put the pieces in place to launch a new business that would ultimately allow him to connect his customers with the hundreds of millions of smart phone users throughout the world, but perhaps more importantly, the incredible majority of smart phone users right here at home. In the beginning of November, Uniq Apps was born. A turn-key style app production company, Uniq

Apps allows businesses to select the app features important to their specific business and have an app designed around their needs. The apps are turn-key in that they take approximately one week from start to completion, and this includes the time to have them approved by the app store. Customers have the ability to select which app stores they would like their app to be available on, as well as have the option to utilize a web app that will work on smart phones that do not have an associated app store. Perhaps the most exciting part of this story though, is the price and lack of exclusivity. App development for smart phones will often run in the vein of over $10,000 for one basic app’s development in only one of the two major app stores, a price that obviously does an excellent job of singling out who can compete in the mobile marketplace. With Parker’s system, however, business owners can obtain apps for their business at less than $100 per month. Better yet, this

price includes an app in the Apple App Store, the Android Market, and a mobile HTML 5 web app that functions on all smart phones that don’t currently have their own app store. To take it one step further, this monthly cost also includes updates and technical support. To save our readers the trouble of doing the math for themselves, that means a minimum of 8 years before the cost of an app through Parker’s system reaches the upfront cost of developing an app through standard channels. Sporting over 40 amazing features, we have no doubt that Parker’s business will quickly grab a foothold in Chico and beyond. If you’re a local business in need of a your own mobile app at an affordable price (and let’s be honest, which local business isn’t?), visit Parker’s new website at www.uniqapps.com and see what you’re missing. visit Parker’s new website at www.uniqapps.com or call 530-924-4903 and see what you’re missing.

EVERYTHING IS LOCAL . . . AND EVERYTHING IS GLOBAL.

BY JENNIFER SERNA AND JESSICA MACKENZIE

ealtors and industry experts all tell you “Real estate is local! What happens in Peoria is just not the same as what happens in Chico.” They’re absolutely right. And then again, they’re not. Sitting here in Han-Nah’s, a popular downtown restaurant in San Ignacio, Belize, I’m more than 3000 miles from home and far from my familiar real estate business. Or so you’d think. But over a plate of rice and beans, stewed chicken and fried plantains, local agent Joshua Lohr of Ceiba Realty is sharing real estate stories that have a remarkably familiar resonance. While the economy in Belize is not as volatile as ours, the market here is down nearly 25% over the last three years. Clients are unsure whether to buy or rent, build or stay put. Families are considering ‘joint’ ventures, sharing spaces in creative ways. Things are also remarkably different. There’s no MLS here, so list prices vary widely and wildly. Mortgages are uncommon, hard to get, and with interest rates approaching 20% who’d want one? On the other hand, property taxes are quite nearly inconsequential. Still, whether it’s California or Belize, folks still fret over making the right decision – regardless of the economic climate. Where and when to buy, how much to pay, and what kind of property best suits their needs. While the answers will definitely differ from person to person, situation to situation, the questions – and the means to address them – are

simple and straightforward. Know your market. Watch prices – start early! Sign up for automatic email alerts for market activity (new listings, price changes, solds) in your price range and category – then actually watch them. Visit open houses – lots of them. See what your budget will buy – learn to recognize a good deal, an okay deal, and a property that’s overpriced. Arm yourself against making an overly emotional decision. Know the neighborhoods. Get out there! Drive through neighborhoods you’re considering. Go at different times of day and evening. Talk to people who live there. What’s the traffic like? How close are the things that matter to you – whether it’s shopping or sports or proximity to downtown or work or even the road out of town. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen move to Chico only to buy one home and within months wish they’d bought somewhere else. Know what you want. What is it about a home that matters most to you, your spouse, your family? Is it location? Or price? The number of bedrooms or the size of the back yard? Think about how you live in your home, not just what it looks like or how big it is. Make a list. Shoot for getting 85% of what you want – then decide what you can live without, or what you can add or change later. Prioritize! Bottom line: If you’re a buyer today, you’re in a good spot - so make the most of it! Take your time, think things through, and of course, find a great realtor to help you. Happy hunting!
