The sun: Nature’s food It’s summer time! Nature exuberantly shows us what it’s made of. Everything blossoms and flourishes through the power of sunlight. Deep colours and rich fragrances stimulate the senses. The sun shines all the time and it doesn’t get dark until late. We all go outside, which makes us feel great. We recharge on solar power, vitamin D enriches our bodies and we feed from the delicious products of summer. It’s also summer at Natudis, Kroon and Hagor. Many new products see daylight every week, and with a bit of tender loving care, they are now growing into full bloom. Our clients are also surprising us with their great initiatives. They share our organic, sustainable lifestyle with many of their customers; inspire and inform them with the intriguing stories there are to tell about our products, the manufacturers and organic chains of nature that have provided us with these products. That way we as partners in this industry can shine light on our vision and ideas on preserving and reinforcing our nature, the basis of vital nutrition and life. The earth has given us a lot to be thankful for. Let us, in the light of full-blown summer, continue to join forces to give the earth’s value a voice. On behalf of our entire staff, I wish you a summer full of sunlight, happiness and beautiful moments to share in the theatre of Nature.

Petra van der Linden - Steenvoorden Brussen CEO of Natudis, Kroon and Hagor

The brand for a biodynamic diet LunaeTerra is one of Natudis’ own brands - a high-quality brand, which deserves more attention. It is a brand produced with respect for humans, animals and our planet. And it’s a brand that gives back to nature; a brand that moves along with the rhythms of nature. Moves along with the rhythms of the seasons, with the climate and ... which adapts to the interplay of Nature.

What makes LunaeTerra taste so good?

The LunaeTerra product range

LunaeTerra is made from biodynamic agriculture, the most sustainable form of agriculture. Biodynamic farmers do not ‘just’ follow rules; they focus on connecting with nature, attentiveness and creativity. To feel, see and smell what the soil, animal or crop needs, and to coordinate with that. Biodynamic farmers do not just use the earth, they also search for natural resources to strengthen and enrich the earth. They work with the power of nature and focus on natural growth, on the faith that solutions can always be found in nature. Caring for each other, for the earth and for the animals, the way it should be. Allowing not only us, but also our (grand)children to enjoy the earth for as long as possible. This close collaboration between humans, animals and nature results in vital products, full of taste. And you can taste that in every LunaeTerra product. The full taste of products that have had time to ripen; of products that got the care and creativity they needed. LunaeTerra amazes, surprises and seduces you with the best that nature has to offer. There’s a good chance that a whole new world will open for you…

Nature has so much to offer that we had to make a selection for the range of LunaeTerra products. Nevertheless, there is a wide variety within the brand. The brand includes fruit juices, vegetable juices, preserves, grains, muesli, oats, mayonnaise and pasta. And these categories contain a wide range in the various kinds of products, so you always have a choice. Unless, of course, nature decides otherwise! LunaeTerra is a Demeter brand, which means that we sometimes have disappointing harvests or other trouble from natural conditions. In that case, LunaeTerra gives nature the space it needs… we as people then just need to take our consumption down a bit. For more information about LunaeTerra, check out

www.lunaeterra.nl.

Demeter

Demeter is the independent certification mark for biodynamic products and goes even further than organic. Farmers and processers have to earn this premium quality certification mark by meeting the European standards for organic products as well as a number of internationally established requirements and guidelines for biodynamic products. The organic aspects are checked by the independent organisation SKAL, which also ensures the European certification mark for organic production in the Netherlands. In addition, compliance with the guidelines for biodynamic agriculture is monitored by Control Union. THYME Did you know that you can walk on thyme? So even in your garden path, you can plant an edible layer of creeper herbs. Your best option is the creeper type of thyme (there are also types that grow vertically). Thyme also blooms, which makes the plant even more fun to look at and running thyme through your fingers will make your hands smell nice, too! You can make thyme grow by striking cuttings off the plant or by separating it .

WILD STRAWBERRIES ‘Just’ strawberries, but with a delicious aroma and even more taste than its more widely-known little brother. Wild strawberries don’t have runners like regular strawberries do, and the fruit stays quite small. Some people prefer the taste of regular strawberries to that of wild strawberries, but... one can’t argue about taste. You can sow wild strawberries, but you can also separate them.

MINT Delicious in your tea, fresh mint leaves. The smell, the taste…. it’s a real treat. If you ever come across mint, tear off a piece of the plant. Plant it in your garden and within no time, you’ll have a gigantic mint plant, because mint grows very easily, and at a rapid pace. Place the plant in the shadow and keep the soil moist.

ROSEMARY Rosemary is a well-known herb, commonly used in the kitchen. Like thyme, there are both creeper and vertical types of rosemary. It’s a creeper that will stay green and can stand drought very well. This herb will love a spot in direct sunlight. You can also separate this herb to make it grow.

OREGANO Did you know that oregano is also sometimes called wild marjoram? It’s great on a pizza. The herb is actually related to mint, but is part of the branch that can stand drought and direct sunlight better. If possible, prevent the plant from getting any water. Regularly cut off the tops of the plant, so that the plant can continue more as a creeper and grow less vertically. You can dry oregano leaves and then keep them for a pretty long time. The taste will intensify over time. You can make oregano grow by sowing it, striking cuttings off the plant or by separating it.

EASTERN TEABERRY This is probably the most obscure herb on the list. Most of us only know this herb as a garden plant, but eastern teaberry is really an edible herb. You can eat both the leaves and the red berries. The herb is usually eaten as an addition to tea or in dishes. The plant stays green all year long and flourishes in shadowy places. Even right under trees, the herb will grow. You can make eastern teaberry grow by sowing it, striking cuttings off the plant or by separating it.

brazen questions for... This time, the theme is nature’s summery shows. The interplay of light is the source of lots of life, and it’s a source of happiness. At Natudis, we laugh a lot together, but we also empathise with one another. We’re like a real family. We are part of each other’s shows, both professionally and personally. This time, meet our ‘old-timer’ Gery Foppen, a colleague in the Finance department.

would you get out of bed for? I am a big fan of many, many products, but I could easily get out of bed for some delicious Ekoland fruit juice and/or a fresh sandwich with Chocoreale dark chocolate sprinkles! And then I’d crawl right back into bed after that.

younger (haha), but seriously: A nice type of krupuk (in various flavours). A bit more expansion in Indian/Surinamese cooking herbs (like cumin; ginger; or Madame Jeanette pepper). You can of course gather from this that Indian/Surinamese cuisine is a big hit at the Foppen household.

What is it about that product that you

like so much? The rich, pure and yummy taste of course, especially the juices… I can really recommend them.

you think of that does not exist yet? Rather one that no longer exists I’d say, namely the (internal) staff shop, in which we as staff can purchase/order products and in which new products are introduced, bringing staff involvement to an (even) higher level! And of course a Natudis Natuurwinkel shop in Harderwijk.

Which product from our product range

What is your favourite professional magazine? I like to read a Dutch magazine for consumers called Consumentengids. Why is it your favourite professional magazine? It’s always fun to follow product studies and read about test results. And I’m always curious to see what the best (or perhaps also the worst) choices are and why. It’s also fun to read all kinds of consumer “trifles”, like what to do in certain cases and where to go to solve particular consumer problems, etc.

product range if you were in charge? Cream to make your skin twenty years

What is your favourite thing about your current position? Ensuring a solid base by correctly processing the general data in our automation system, so that all connected transactions can proceed correctly and so that this data can eventually end up in the store cash register systems. With super happy shopkeepers as a result! So always staying critical, sharp and consistent. What is your least favourite thing about your current position? Sorry, accounts payable/accounts receivable is just really not my thing.

What product from our product range would you rather not eat/drink? Kanne bread drink and (all kinds of) marmalade. Why would you rather not eat it? Try a glass of bread drink and you’ll see why. As far as marmalade goes: that’s just my personal taste, I really don’t like it. Where would you like to work if you

didn’t work for Natudis? I would like to help out training the animals in a training school for assistance or guide

How did you start working at Natudis? I just applied for a job back then. There was a job opening for an administrative position in what was then called NATUFOOD B.V. in Ermelo. What would you like to see change right away in our branch? I guess something having to do with prices… I often find our products to be quite expensive.

day at work? To name a few: Taking the time at home with my husband to go over my day and his day. Enjoying a delicious meal, prepared daily with care by my husband (an amateur chef). A good book (like Swedish thrillers) A good TV show (movies/news/ documentaries) and much more.

How do you keep up to date on the newest developments in our branch? Staff meetings and any briefing/ communications/company e-mails. Which developments in our industry do you find striking? That, despite the economic crisis, Natuurwinkel shops seem to be on the upswing again. Where do you think Natudis will be in five years? I have faith and hope for a super-strong wholesale company. How do you want your customers to see you as a Natudis employee? As someone you can always come to with your questions, who will contribute ideas and stay sharp, critical and consistent. No matter who she’s dealing with.

What other player in the non-organic foods industry do you respect a lot? Assistance and guide dog trainers, who can teach those dogs so much with so much patience and expertise that after their training they can actually “get to work”. It opens so many doors for disabled people, that they then get the chance to maintain their independence and maybe even achieve their own ideals. I have a lot of respect for both the trainers and the dogs. What day of the week do you like working most? It doesn’t matter, though I do sometimes need some time to settle in on Mondays and get back into my daily routines. But don’t worry, that never takes too long!

At the Biovak, Natudis officially signed the petition for Red de Rijke Weide [Save the Rich Pasture]. In addition, it organised a number of meetings at the Pelleboer family farm in Mastenbroek and purchased milk from the farm to further the Red de Rijke Weide cheese.

year ago, the Dutch Bird Protection Foundation started the Red de Rijke Weide campaign. The increasing demand for milk and the increasingly intensive agriculture has left no more room for flowers, bees and birds. Pasture birds in particular, such as the black-tailed godwit, have been decreasing in numbers for decades. With this campaign, the Bird Protection Foundation wants to try to preserve 20% of the flower-filled pastures in our country. That’s enough to provide milk to all of the Netherlands and to give the pasture birds here a future. By producing this cheese, the Bird Protection Foundation wants to show that producing milk can fit in perfectly with protection of pasture birds and nature. The milk comes from pasture bird farmer Henk Pelleboer from Mastenbroek, who takes the birds on his land into account in his operational management. For every kilogram of ‘Red de Rijke Weide Cheese’ sold, 1 euro goes directly to the expansion of the pasture bird area in Mastenbroek. ‘Red de Rijke Weide Cheese’ is available at all Natuurwinkel shops and various organic or natural food shops.
