Have you heard it? I am so excited to share with you the news about Reba’s Pray For Peace campaign! Reba McEntire has unveiled a beautiful video to showcase her song, Pray for Peace, and the clip features the singer, as well as fans around the world, praying for peace.

According to fellow legend Ronnie Dunn, McEntire chose to share the video with fans on her Facebook page because, “No label knew what to do with it.”

McEntire writes on her website, “The idea to write the song Pray For Peace came to me last year as I was walking on our place in Gallatin, Tennessee. For days, I’d sing, “pray for peace” over and over. It wasn’t until several months later that the other parts started to fall in place. Some, not until we got into the studio to record it."

“I feel this song is a gift from God,” she says. “I have never worked on a song as long as this one. It went from a bass drum, fiddle and singers to guest artists singing with me, adding more instruments and even a choir and a bagpipe! It’s an act of perseverance, prayer, hope, fellowship and mostly, love.”

ating flaxseed reduces blood pressure, according to researchers from Canada’s St. Boniface Hospital Research Center. They attribute the effect to its omega-3 fatty acids, lignans and fiber.

The researchers examined the effects of flaxseed on systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with peripheral artery disease, a condition typically marked by hypertension. Patients consumed a variety of foods that collectively contained 30 grams of milled flaxseed or a placebo each day for six months. The flaxseed group experienced significantly increased plasma levels of certain omega-3 fatty acids and lower average systolic blood pressure (by 10 mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (by 7 mm Hg). Those in the flaxseed group with initial systolic blood pressure levels over 140 mmHg saw reductions averaging 15 mmHg.

he ancient ayurvedic herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) shows promise in reducing the symptoms of bipolar disorder, according to two recent studies.

For eight weeks, scientists from the University of Pittsburgh’s Western Psychiatric Institute gave 500 milligrams per day of ashwagandha extract or a placebo to 53 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The researchers used a series of bipolar tests to gauge cognition, response time, social cognition response and other processes. After the eight weeks, the group given ashwagandha showed significant improvements in auditory-verbal working memory, reaction time and social cognition.

In a study published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatric Medicine, among a group of 64 men and women with chronic stress, after two months of ashwagandha treatment, standardized test scores revealed stress reduced by 44 percent, anxiety and insomnia by 68 percent and severe depression by 79 percent. Depression and anxiety are hallmarks of bipolar disorder.

Gentle, Sustained Pressures and Holds Help Children Heal and Feel Safe

abies experience a major form of shock when they enter the world from their familiar, fluidfilled space in the mother’s womb. During the birthing process or even in utero, they may experience other forms of physical trauma resulting in length differences, joint issues, abnormal curvatures of the neck or back and other structural or behavioral imbalances. When babies or children have any form of illness, chronic pain or noticeable dysfunction, advocates of myofascial release (MFR) under the John F. Barnes approach believe that myofascial restrictions can be a contributing factor.

Our body’s connective tissue, also known as fascia, is responsible for our structure as babies, children, teens and adults. It plays a crucial role on physical, mental and emotional levels because it surrounds and protects the entire body, including each muscle, organ, nerve, blood vessel and living cell within them. It is so important that restrictions can place a great deal of pressure on many internal organs and even pull fascia into the brain, causing issues with concentration, behavior and hormonal balance. Unaddressed restrictions in the fascia can impact a child’s movement, growth, function and ability to absorb proper nutrients.

MFR is beneficial at any age, but because children are naturally intuitive, they respond very well to this form of treatment. They often excel in the healing process more rapidly than adults because of this early innate intuition and tendency to let go. Babies and children have tissues that are more pliable than adults, so they respond more readily to the extremely gentle, yet effective hands-on, energetic and holistic nature of MFR.

The gentle, sustained pressures and holds of MFR are well-suited for children because it makes them feel safe, and they are never forcefully manipulated. Other techniques involve a rhythmic and soothing rocking motion that helps to alleviate pent-up energy, promote relaxation and decrease pain. Because babies and children have not yet been conditioned in a number of ways that adults have, they are naturally able to distinguish what feels good and what doesn’t.

Some common conditions addressed through MFR include constipation, chronic ear infections, colic, torticollis, stomach pain, asthma, auditory/speech impairments, neurological trauma, high or low tone and ADHD. Children often experience relief from discomfort, feel more relaxed, have more focus and are less irritable due to the effectiveness of MFR treatment. Receiving this form of care at an early age can help to not only address a child’s current conditions, but also serve as a means of prevention for many common complications in adulthood.

Pine Bark Extract Reduces Perimenopausal Symptoms

R

esearch p u b lished in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine confirms that pine bark extract can significantly reduce symptoms of menopause and perimenopause, including restless legs syndrome and hot flashes. For three months, 170 perimenopausal women were given 30 milligrams of Pycnogenol patented pine bark extract or a placebo twice a day.

Although a placebo effect was noted, the supplement significantly improved all but two symptoms and was especially effective in improving vasomotor and insomnia/sleep patterns. The severity of symptoms among the Pycnogenol group, as measured by the Kupperman Index, decreased 56 percent more than for the placebo group.

In another study, scientists from Italy’s Pescara University gave 70 perimenopausal women a placebo or 100 milligrams of Pycnogenol daily for two months. The supplement group experienced fewer menopausal symptoms and showed improvements with symptoms that include fatigue, insomnia, reduced concentration, memory problems, dizziness, depression and irritability.

According to The Boston Globe, one in four Boston residents is obese, and Kate Walsh, chief executive of Boston Medical Center, believes the program can help. “Regular exercise is key to combating this [obesity] trend, and Prescribe-a-Bike,” she says, “is one important way our caregivers can help patients get the exercise they need to be healthy.”

Wongu University of Oriental Medicine A Gold Mine of Education

ental medicine will enhance the health and wellness of people throughout the world,” says Wongu President Anthony J. Guerra.

In 1973, Nevada became the first state to grant licenses to practitioners of Oriental medicine. With California and 20 other states operating schools of Oriental medicine, Nevada stands out as one among two states recognizing doctors in Oriental medicine, (i.e. OMD as opposed to acupuncturist). “Located in this historic state of Nevada, we are emerging as a leader in the coordination of the advancement of traditional Oriental medicine,” says Guerra.

In April 2013, the Nevada State Board of Oriental Medicine listed only 50 licensed doctors in Oriental medicine, 20 of whom are located in southern Nevada. However, as the awareness of and demand for natural, non-invasive health care treatment grows, the de-

The elective credit component affords a student the opportunity to create coursework that might address the requirements of establishing a new practice—for example, basic business concepts such as finance, marketing and regulatory requirements.

The internship portion of the curriculum provides 1,000 hours of training, with the intern participating in at least 350 patient visits. During the 1,000 hours of clinical training, students develop acupuncture techniques, evaluation and diagnosis skills, professional conduct and “confidence in practice”.

Wongu seeks to nurture students’ love of humanity and the compassion that is the spiritual grounding of the healing professional. Wongu Health Center Promotes Traditional Chinese Medicine

W

ongu Health Center (WHC) is a community and teaching clinic located directly across from Wongu University of Oriental Medicine that offers acupuncture, herbal medicine and other Oriental medicine services.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), health is a reflection of balance within the body. Pain and disease are caused by problems relating to problems with qi flow and balance inside the individual’s body. Most traditional Oriental modalities attempt to correct these imbalances and improve qi flow, thus restoring one’s health.

In TCM, all the organs and body systems are considered to be connected, so a problem with one organ or area may manifest itself as pain or illness in another area of the body.

TCM uses a systematic approach, even for illnesses that may present as localized problems. To treat a broad range of individuals and illnesses, WHC makes use of a variety of TCM therapies.

Acupuncturists insert extremely thin, sterile needles into special points of the body that correlate to the channels, or meridians, where qi travels through the body. The insertion of the needles stimulates the movement of qi and can remove blockages in the meridians, allowing the qi to flow unobstructed through the body. Acupuncturists are trained to determine what organs or areas of the body are in need of attention and which acupuncture points must be stimulated, correcting inner imbalances of qi and alleviating pain and illness by addressing the underlying issues present in the body and stimulating the body to naturally correct itself.

TCM makes use of a wide variety of traditional Oriental herbs. Generally, these medicines are used to increase one’s overall energy or to improve a specific organ or organ function, such as the

heart or circulation. Most formulas require a variety of herbs, which are boiled together to extract the necessary nutrients and substances. Medicines can also be provided in the form of powders or in small pills and tablets for easy transportation and ingestion. Trained herbalists at WHC are able to create custom-made herbal medicines based on each individual’s specific health needs, allowing for a great amount of control and customization. Many herbs are dispensed onsite.

Tuina is a TCM muscle manipulation and massage therapy meant to align the body’s external musculature and its internal energies. Tuina practitioners gently knead, roll, press, rub and otherwise manipulate joints and muscles in order to harmonize the body’s qi and bring balance between various forces present in the body. Tuina is taught both as a preventative measure as well as a treatment for both nonmusculoskeletal conditions such as digestive problems, and musculoskeletal ailments such as pain from sports training.

Moxibustion is a type of therapy that involves applying heat to acupuncture points using the traditional Oriental herb, mugwort, which has been shown to increase blood flow to the uterus and pelvis and has helped correct breech presentations in pregnant women. In moxibustion, mugwort is used to form small cones that are burned to produce heat.

These cones can either be placed directly on the skin, so that the heat can transfer through the cone to the body, or placed on an acupuncture needle that has been inserted slightly into the skin, which allows the needle to transfer the heat to the body. This promotes the flow of qi and stimulates circulation, in order to stimulate healing and restore balance to the body. As a result, moxibustion is often used as treatment for conditions related to cold and damp, such as arthritis.

Cupping therapy utilizes glass or plastic cups placed on the surface of the body to create localized suction that promotes blood and qi flow, stimulates the release of toxins and helps musculoskeletal relaxation. The suction from the cupping opens pores, pulls stagnant qi through the meridians and draws toxins out of tissues, triggering the lymphatic system and cleansing the bloodstream. Cupping is often used on the back, which has five meridians for qi flow, but can also be used on other areas. Cupping has been used to treat and alleviate a wide variety of medical conditions from respiratory diseases to depression.

A visit to Wongu Health Center may be different from an experience at a private practitioner, because it is a teaching clinic. There may be observers, including other students and/ or supervisors. However, WHC will readily provide referral to a private practitioner instead.

PERMACULTURE is All Around Us

reat Basin Permaculture (GBP) has created the Permaculture Learning Garden (PLG) within the Vegas Roots Community Garden, in Las Vegas.

The garden consists of an herb spiral, cacti, agave, jujube, fig, grapes, pomegranate and mesquite trees. Permaculture is a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering and environmental design that develops sustainable architecture and selfmaintained agricultural systems modeled from natural ecosystems.

Permaculturist Jessica Penrod was taking a break from work and having lunch at the PLG and saw some kids playing with the Sound Garden installation–a garden that creatively uses old instruments on which to play. When the children saw Penrod, they ran away, thinking they were going to get in trouble. She called after them to stay and instead, told them what they were doing was great. It is this event that inspired Penrod, one of the cofounders of GBP, to make the garden even more kid-friendly, and it now includes Pipeworks, a water feature made from recycled materials, and a Fairy Garden with miniature furniture and a teepee.

The first Saturday of every month is Kids Day at the PLG, where children learn about seed saving, join the GBP group for their fall planting or play with the many kid-friendly features found around the

garden. There is also a playground on site next to the chicken coop.

Favorite aspects of Kids Day for Tiffany Whisenant, another GBP founder, is how "the garden expands kids' taste buds." For example, at a recent fig harvesting event, many of the children had never tasted figs outside of Fig Newtons and were surprised how sweet and delicious something could be right off the tree without any added sugar.

At subsequent events, children have participated in the installation of a lizard pool, bee ponds and have even created magic wands. Parents may help, too, or they can choose to lounge on the cob benches under the shade structure, drinking sun tea (or in the colder months, hot tea made from herbs from the garden.) Cob is a traditional British method of building with earth, similar to adobe. It uses only sand, clay, straw and water to create durable structures.

The kids love to play in the mud, so there are plans to create cob pavers, teaching children one of the principals of permaculture by using and valuing renewable resources at a future event. And Poet-Tree, where kids write poems and hang them on the trees, is coming.

The PLG receives about 50 visitors a month in the peak season and produces about 250 pounds of produce each year with a water bill of only $7 a month; which is so low due to permaculture practices

like having a sunken garden bed instead of the standard raised beds, which actually evaporate faster.

The harvest comes from a garden that is only tended to once a week. Some of the trees planted (almond, jujube) are in their infancy and won't start producing until the next year or two. So while the water bill remains low, the amount of food produced will only increase year after year, which is what separates a permaculture garden from more traditional gardens. By designing correctly and investing in the soil early, we create a garden that mostly cares for itself while increasing in production year after year, to the point where all that is left to do is pick the low-hanging fruit.

Permaculture was founded by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970's, and, to some, is considered the solution to climate change. It works in harmony with Mother Nature. No chemicals or fertilizers are needed if farms and gardens are correctly designed.

The PLG was founded by Whisenant, Penrod and Peter Frigeri, of Great Basin Permaculture, who met at a permaculture book club in 2009 at Gaia Flower's, in the Arts District, which Frigeri owns. They started the garden in 2010 because as Frigeri says, they "saw an increased need for positive change in the community and the environment."

In addition to Kid's Day the PLG is open to the public from 8 to 11 a.m. every Saturday.

048 is a plan to prevent wars, eliminate poverty and create the conditions for global sustainability by the time we celebrate the centennial of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, unanimously adopted in 1948 by all UN member countries.

2048 dispels myths, including a major misconception that peace and prosperity are hopelessly complicated and unattainable. In truth, both can be secured through the realization of five fundamental freedoms for everyone: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, freedom for the environment and freedom from fear. These basic freedoms establish a framework within which other rights can flourish.

The five fingers of our hand illustrate the possibilities, starting with the thumb.

It looks different and stands out. It is strong. It represents freedom of speech, an idea that stands up to dishonesty and corruption.

With our index finger, we point and indicate direction. It represents freedom of religion. Each of us is free to choose our own way. Those that decide God is their guide are free to live their own relationship with God.

The middle finger, the longest, represents freedom from want—the long

road of existence and the certainty that there’ll be food, water, education and health care for every one of us as we go along.

Next is the wedding ring finger for many of us, and a finger with a direct link to our nervous system for all of us. It represents freedom for the environment and for life.

We all have a direct link to the Earth and the ecosystem of which we are a part.

When the life of the Earth is spoiled, our lives are spoiled.

Finally, there is our little finger, the least imposing. It represents freedom from fear. It’s the “finale” of our hand, our reward. All the others lead to this one.

As we recount the five freedoms represented by our fingers, remember that we didn’t ask for that hand; we were born with it. Everyone was born with the right to all five freedoms. They are the essence of a good life for all, and in this way they are intertwined; the success of each bolsters the others.

As we learn our rights, we come to expect and demand them, with lasting results. They become our way of life.

Learning that Transforms Hearts and Minds Rethinking How We See Our World Changes Everything

n the 30 years since Harrison Owen introduced Open Space Technology (OST), it has been used hundreds of thousands of times by three-quarters of the world’s countries.

Whether a few people gather in a circle to share ideas and brainstorm personal issues or thousands discuss a bulletin board of topics around tables, OST is a safe, informal venue for transformative learning.

Guided by purpose-based, shared leadership, it allows individuals focused on a specific task to freely speak their thoughts and be heard. It also encourages breakout groups to mine for more information—learning individually, as well as collectively, and self-organizing in order to concentrate on more complex topics. “Boeing engineers used OST to learn how to redesign airplane doors and young Egyptians used it to strategize for their Arab Spring,” as examples, comments Owen.

For Owen, like Jack Mezirow, author of the paper, “Core Principles of Trans18

formative Learning Theory,” 20th-century Brazilian educator Paulo Freire and Juanita Brown, co-founder of The World Café, learning is transformation, the keystone of life, and the essence of meaningful education. “The circle principle contains the predictability of fresh, emerging thoughts and learning that never occurred previously,” explains Owen.

He points to an experiment regarding children’s capacity for self-learning initiated by Sugata Mitra, Ph.D., the former science director of an educational technology firm in India. On the outside wall of the building where he worked, Mitra installed a computer facing a New Delhi slum where most children were unschooled and illiterate and had never seen a computer. He turned it on and told children they could play with it.

Via a noninvasive video camera, he watched 7-to-13-year-olds discover how to use the computer and teach each other how to play music and games and draw using Microsoft’s Paint program.

Repetition of the experiment in other impoverished sections of India yielded similar results. Wherever he established

an Internet connection, children that could not read English, the Internet’s default language, taught themselves how to use the Web to obtain information through their interactions with each other and the computer.

“I agree with what Mitra surmised from his experiment—learning is emergent, which is another word for self-organizing,” remarks Owen. Like Freire, Owen likens traditional education to the “banking” method of learning, whereby the teacher passes information to students that become dependent on someone else rather than learning how to think on their own.

Suzanne Daigle, a Sarasota, Floridabased consultant with a Canadian multidisciplinary consulting firm, explains how the OST learning environment changed her life: “My personal transformation began in 2009. Even though I was a leader in my corporate career, I doubted myself and often believed that what others had to say was more significant and interesting than what I could express.”

Now she says she has shed her people-pleasing tendencies and former attempts to control other people’s agendas and discovered the freedom and courage of her own voice. “As an OST facilitator, my life work now occurs in the moments I am collaboratively learning and listening for opportunities to enter into meaningful conversations that can lead to actions,” says Daigle. “I invite others to do the same.”

Co-Learning

In a compulsory two-year Theory of Learning class for an International Baccalaureate degree at California’s Granadas Hill Charter High School, math and science educator Anais Arteaga helps students apply two major elements of transformative learning: self-reflection to critique one’s own assumptions and discourse through which they question or validate their judgments. She focuses on the roles that perception, language, reason and emotion play in a student’s learning and decision-making abilities.

“Questions and lively discussions are the basis of the class,” Arteaga says.

“We begin with a question and explore what we know, how we know it and any

conclusions drawn from the process.”

Using a democratic model in which the teacher welcomes critical discussion, Arteaga and her students have mutually discovered that knowledge is not static, but has a history and changes over time. “When we first started the class, it was challenging to accept that in many situations there is no right or wrong, just relativity and a matter of perception. We don’t really know anything for certain,” she remarks.

Worldview Explorations

Katia Petersen, Ph.D., is the executive director of education at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), headquartered in Petaluma, California. She co-developed the tools, practices and 22 lessons in the pioneering organization’s Worldview Explorations (WE) project. Founded on 40 years of IONS research, WE engages everyone in age-appropriate ways in reflecting upon long-held assumptions and how beliefs create the lens they see through, ultimately improving how they understand and respond to the world.

“When individuals understand the power of offering their story and are open to the worldview stories of others, they no longer focus attention on differences and limitations,” says Petersen. “They realize that everyone has their own truth.

“WE’s transformative learning experiences draw from the heart and soul of individuals, rather than stuffing heads with ideas and perspectives, which

serves them well as they embody and apply these tools and practices in their daily lives.”

She cites a particularly powerful moment for a group of young people she worked with. “A student was killed in a drive-by shooting two weeks before their certification. The transformative moment came when they said that their new awareness and capacity for compassion and understanding would not allow them to seek revenge. Instead, they chose to save lives in their communities using their new skills.”

World Café

Like OST, the World Café, co-created by Brown and David Isaacs, of Burnsville, North Carolina, creates a transformative learning environment for individuals of all ages. Its primary principles are: set the context, create hospitable space, explore questions that matter, encourage everyone’s contributions, connect diverse perspectives, listen together for patterns and insights and share collective discoveries. Webs of conversation created around actual or occasionally virtual tables resemble those found in coffeehouses.

“Conversation is a core meaningmaking process, and people get to experience how the collective intelligence of a small or large group can become apparent,” says Brown. After several rounds of conversation on one or more topics, participants offer their harvest of

key insights, learning and opportunities for action with the full group gathered to reflect together on their discoveries.

“World Café provides an environment in which you are comfortably drawn forward by the questions you are asking together. When enough diversity is present, varied perspectives are offered and people feel listened to and free to make their contribution,” observes Brown.

What participants learn in this setting creates the climate of conditions that support the kinds of transformations that can change lives. Brown remarks, “When it happens to me, I feel like my brain cells have been rearranged. I know something in the collective, as well as the individual, has been evoked, so that something never before imagined becomes present and available.”

Transformative learning has been compared to a sea journey without landmarks. Adventurous individuals that are open to traversing its highly engaging processes can emerge as autonomous thinkers, capable of contributing fresh, new ideas that just might transform the world we live in.

Day Care Goes Green

What’s Good for Kids is Good for the World

ith children especially susceptible to germs, chemical sensitivities and allergens, it makes sense to ensure that the child-friendliness of day care facilities extends to their ecological integrity.

When Denise Adusei, of New York City, was unable to find a preschool that included all the criteria she sought, she decided to create and direct Peartree Preschool, a year-round day care facility for 2-to-5-year-olds.

“An eco-friendly day care environment is more than nontoxic paint, organic food and unscented soaps. It’s what you don’t see, as well,” says Adusei.

“We first looked for a building with lots of natural light near Central Park. Manhattan has a high rate of

allergens, so we went ahead with a thorough environmental inspection on what looked like an ideal building,” recalls Adusei. Inspectors pulled tiles from the floor, opened walls to check for mold and collected samples.

“When they discovered signs of an old oil spill in the basement, we knew it was an unsafe place for children. We kept looking until we found the right building with large windows, near the park and environmentally safe,” she says, noting that her own kids now attend Peartree.

Workplace coach Paul E. McGinniss, who also blogs at NewYorkGreenAdvocate.com, says, “Creating a garden onsite and connecting with local farmers or CSAs [community sup-

ported agriculture] to provide healthy, fresh foods is a great way to educate kids via a learning activity. New York’s Hudson Valley, where I live, has a farm to school movement. Everyone should know where their food comes from,” he says, echoing another day care cornerstone.

In Madison, Connecticut, Tina Pascoe, a registered nurse, attorney and health consultant, co-founded Nurses for Day Care, a nationwide program.

The staff finds that many children are sensitive to dye additives in mustard or ketchup, certain oils in soap, paint or cleaning fumes and fire-retardant chemicals embedded in new rugs and carpeting.

“We push for the whole school to go green, not just the classroom, with the sensitive or allergic child in mind,” she says. “We’re willing to do whatever it takes, like providing special menus, banning perfumes and smoking, and only using disinfectant wipes or bleach during nighttime cleaning.” Pascoe personally works with about 80 facilities throughout the state.

The Cottages at Michaels Learning Center, in Sarasota, is Florida’s first school to earn a Level Three Green School and green infant care certification from the National Green School Coalition and operates the city’s only certified green infant care program.

Children from 6 weeks through kindergarten benefit. The school even conducts regular radon testing.

Owner and Director Michelle Ireland assesses, “It’s cause and effect.

One of the things we teach the children is how our actions have an impact on the world.”

Mark Stedelbauer, vice president of marketing at eWater Advantage, in Raleigh, North Carolina, strives to inform day care administrators about the value of using electrolyzed water instead of cleansers. An electrical current that runs through a blend of ordinary tap water and minerals changes the basic nature of water. A lower pH creates a disinfecting solution; a higher pH results in a degreaser. Both solutions clean and kill germs without fumes, residue or allergy triggers.

“Often, the combined cost of

the electricity, water and mineral supplements used is less than what would be spent on multiple cleaning products,” Stedelbauer points out. It can be created by the half-gallon in a toaster-sized unit onsite and has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture (for use on meat) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (for use on produce). Also, electrolyzed water won’t harm skin or clothing.

Creative Minds Learning Centers’ six locations are recognized by the Oregon Program of Quality as among the top 25 schools in the state. They buy renewable energy from wind, solar and biomass sources. At the school, they compost, plant sustainable gardens, collect rainwater and recycle.

Generally, the children are outdoors for 45 to 90 minutes per day, weather permitting, and flexible activities allow them to investigate their own interests safely.

Runner’s Hi Women and Social Media Revolutionize the Sport

hether donning colorful tutus or making a marathon a girls’ day out, the current running scene is attracting a broader group of fitness-seekers mindful of the enhanced benefits of a more well-rounded approach. Rather than pursuing fierce competition and personal bests, these runners are focusing on social bonding and overall well-being, likely boosting their fitness success.

Two main factors are fueling what’s shaping up as a new running boom: women and social media. “The first running-boom era was male-centric and competitive,” observes Ryan Lamppa, of Running USA. He’s referring to the 1970s, when, largely thanks to 1972 Summer Olympic marathon gold medal winner Frank Shorter and The Complete Book of Running, by James Fixx, many were inspired to hook up Walkmans, lace up sneakers and train for distance races.

“Today’s running boom is female-centric, much bigger and more focused on health and fitness and completion, rather than competition.”

Forget elapsed running time; just cross the finish line and have fun doing it, seems to be a growing mantra.

Women’s participation hit an all-time high in recent years, comprising 56 percent of the more than 15.5 million runners finishing U.S. races sanctioned

by Running USA in 2012 and 61 percent of U.S. half-marathoners in 2013.

“Women tend to be more social and more in tune with their health overall, and that’s definitely a driving force,” Lamppa says.

Couple the female factor with social media-driven, nontraditional race events and the result is explosive. “Events are fun, community-centered and sometimes charity-driven,” Lamppa says of the many innovations, from paint-splashing 5Ks to mud-slinging obstacle course action, which attracted 4 million entrants last year.

Boosts Bonding

These trends could indicate America’s collective progress toward fitness as studies show the social factor plays a huge motivational role in participation. “I think running adherence strengthens when there is accountability and social support,” remarks Englewood, New Jersey, sports psychologist Greg Chertok, citing a meta-analysis of data in Sport & Exercise Psychology Review that backs his notion.

For example, such social exercise events inspire happiness. “If you are physically close to someone that is happy, eager and optimistic, you are naturally going to share those feelings,” explains Chertok, who is also a spokesman for the American College of Sports Medicine.

“Just through social connectedness alone, you’ll gain boosted performance and mood.”

As a finisher of two Tough Mudders (an intense obstacle course challenge),

Chertok can personally testify to the benefits of camaraderie. “It’s just like if a married couple got stuck in a storm and had to brave the elements; the act of doing something challenging together is very bonding.”

Simply joining a recreational running group—also increasingly popular and often social media-driven—can bolster success. “When a bunch of individuals work together to pursue a common goal, they are incentivized by the group,” Chertok remarks. “You’ll run at a faster clip or go a longer distance if you are with a group, because each runner values the group and doesn’t want to let members down.”

Brings Balance

Mixing things up can also improve running performance and decrease risks of injury, enhancing long-term staying power. One study found that eight weeks of simple strength-training exercises by conditioned runners boosted their running performances over their conditioned, but non-strength-training peers, as noted in the Health & Fitness Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

As for injury prevention, everybody, regardless of sport, needs to cross-train, advises Mindy Caplan, a wellness coach in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “In any sport that you engage in, you end up working certain muscles the same way all the time. Then those tighter muscles start to pull on the joints and without stretching, you end up with problems.”

Moving the body in different ways helps, and working on stretching and flexibility can elongate muscles and protect tendons and joints.

“The new runner of this second running boom has much more information about training, health and fitness, and injury prevention,” says Lamppa, who occasionally cross-trains by biking and includes some yoga-related stretching as part of his regular routine. “You have to have balance in your running as in your life. If you can get to that point, you will get a very positive response from your body and mind.”

Foods for the Road

by Debra Melani Well-conditioned runners focus on diet, particularly when health foods can put some punch in their pace.

Registered Dietician Kelly Pritchett, Ph.D., a University of Georgia assistant professor of sports nutrition and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, shares benefits of two foods that are currently popular with runners.

Tart cherries are loaded with flavonoids, antioxidants with powerful anti-inflammatory effects. One study of runners in the Hood to Coast 197-mile relay race from Mount Hood to Seaside, Oregon, found that cherry juice notably decreased muscle damage and soreness in runners compared with a group imbibing a placebo drink. The runners drank 10.5 ounces of Montmorency cherry juice twice a day for seven days prior to the race and every eight hours on race day (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition). Make sure juices are 100 percent cherry juice.

Beet roots contain nitrates, vasodilators that relax the blood vessels, allowing them to pump more efficiently and increase exercise efficiency. Researchers found that runners eating beets rather than a placebo ran an average of 3 percent faster. According to the study, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 200 grams of baked beetroots or an equivalent nitrate dose from other vegetables should be consumed one hour before exercise. Nitrates are also found in spinach, broccoli, fennel, leeks and celery.

find a way out, but didn’t have the knowledge or skills. They lived on food stamps and fast food and didn’t know how to navigate a grocery aisle, shop for real food, read a label, equip a kitchen or cook nutritious meals.

Their grandmother has a garden, but never taught her children how to grow food, even though they live in a temperate rural area.

What has your experience with Fed Up shown you about the root cause of many diseases?

I got the whole family cooking, washing, peeling, chopping, cutting and touching real food—onions, garlic, carrots, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, salad greens, even asparagus. After 12 months, the mother had lost 100 pounds and was off of blood pressure medication, and because the father had lost 45 pounds, he finally qualified for a kidney transplant.

rowing scientific evidence shows that toxic emotions contribute to disease. Doctors and scientists are becoming more aware that emotions, feelings, thoughts and the power of beliefs, have a direct bearing upon physical health, abundance, relationships, success and happiness, something ThetaHealing instructor/practitioner Jeff Renel knew intuitively as a child.

Renel, owner of The Sacred Art of Healing at Luminosity Wellness Center, offers healing sessions and classes. “I created a place where I can assist others in the journey of the heart and teach them to tap into the psychic gifts we all possess,” he says.

“ThetaHealing allows individuals to discover what sickness or disease they have and why they have it,” explains Renel, “And then it allows them to quickly reprogram the unconscious mind to eliminate it.” He notes, “It allows a person to identify deeply held blocks that may be preventing them from moving forward in life. Basically, it allows you to make the immediate changes needed in your life to create the life that you would like to have.”

Renel’s work is centered on helping people achieve awareness in the present moment and to clear away the beliefs, habits and thought patterns that prevent them from living in a truly alive, joyful and loving state of being that according to Renel, can be experienced nearly all of the time. While people can do this work on their own, it is often in the workshops coached by Renel that many achieve their most profound transformations.

“Theta healing is not a religion—it transcends all religions. The only thing you need to have is a belief in a higher power,” says Renel. “Theta Healing is based on quantum physics, the law of cause and effect. For every negative belief, for example, there is a negative effect. Thus, our practice is to focus on positive beliefs so we can create positive results. Basically, we are responsible for creating our own life, our own reality.”

People seek out Renel for many reasons: resolving or coping with a health crisis; feeling stuck in old patterns; experiencing an emotional malaise; yearning to deepen their life path; and seeking to reignite, improve or save a relationship and desiring to catalyze new creative energy to achieve or accomplish a desired goal.

The gentle spiritual mentor began developing his healing gift when he had a transformative “realization” as a young child. “I remember, when I was little, lying awake at night thinking about Jesus and wondering about his healing,” Renel recalls. “I remember, actually knowing that we must all have the ability to do what Jesus did, and that was heal.” He began connecting the forces of energy with the morality of Jesus and knew he was getting close to answering the question that was stirring inside.

Renel spent his 20s and 30s in the marble and granite business, which took its toll on his lower back. “I was referred to someone that treated only my lower back issues, which included massage,” he says.

But his back wasn’t getting better, and it wasn’t until he was referred to a local chi-

ropractor that incorporated ThetaHealing into his practice that his back issues were resolved.

“On my first visit, the doctor incorporated ThetaHealing and we started dealing with emotional issues,” explains Renel.

“After the first session, I was still in pain, but after years of restriction, I had movement in my back. After a few sessions I was cured, and I haven’t had back issues since.” He relates that the emotional baggage he carried was released and his health changed.

“I was fascinated by the hands-on healing and I continued to see the ThetaHealer weekly for the next 10 years.”

While it took some years to fully integrate his awareness into a modality that resonated with him, Renel’s own healing gave him affirmation that his intuition and knowing was real, including the ability to transmit healing energy to others. Devoted to mastering ThetaHealing, Renel has completed every ThetaHealing course as a practitioner and holds seven certifications in the modality.

Then it was time to act. “I decided to put my energy and time into another business that I truly, absolutely loved; one that I thought about day and night, so I created The Sacred Art of Healing,” he says. “I wanted to awaken people to the fact that we go through life without realizing that we have negative, subconscious programs in our minds,” says Renel. “Unless we’re aware of it, we don’t know how they are changing our lives. Once aware, we can look and know when to stop the program from being ‘downloaded’ and learn what it’s like to live without drama, depression, etc., and take control of our life. We release ourselves from being a victim.”

“Society teaches us to hold on to resentment or anger. Society doesn’t teach us how to release it… but I can,” says Renel.

“It is extraordinary to have the capacity to empower people and assist them in their journey.”

Renel says, “We create our own lives through our own perception. Think about this,” he says. “We live in our own worlds, but we share the Earth.”

Other fun options are teaching a pet to tow a raft in the pool or to team swim with his owner. In a more complex aquaagility exercise, the dog swims a circle around his owner as a prelude to both of them swimming a synchronized, zigzag course between floating markers before returning to their starting positions.

Ernie, a 95-pound Labrador retriever that lives with Sierra Prause, a marketing assistant, and Jaron Clinton, a search engine content marketer, in Phoenix, Arizona, rides in the storage area of Clinton’s kayak. Ernie came to them at age 4 and has always loved to jump in and swim alongside his owners. “Ernie’s claim to fame is fetching two tennis balls at once,” says Prause. “He wasn’t allowed in the pool at his former home, and now revels in taking a cooling dip after his twice-a-day walks.”

Maria Schultz, author of How to SUP with Your Pup, enjoys stand up paddleboarding with her Australian shepherds, Riley and Kona, on rivers near her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She and Riley learned together in the living room. “I brought the board home and taught Riley how to hop on and off, where to sit or lie on the board, and to relax,” she relates. “I forgot the living room floor stood still. Riley was surprised when he got on the board on the river to find that it moved.” Riley was a good sport about it; within a week, he knew how to ride along.

Kona took several months to get the hang of it. “Have patience, make it fun and all positive,” Schultz advises. “Know what motivates your dog. Riley works for food, Kona for praise.”

For the more adventurous, Loews Coronado Bay Resort, in San Diego, offers one-hour surfing lessons for canine guests.

Taught by Coronado Surfing Academy instructors, the only requirement is that a dog enjoys water. Of course, board shorts and a bandana are also provided so that Fido gets the full surfer dude experience.

DOG GONE SWIMMING SAFETY TIPS

irst, check if area community pools allow dogs for special sessions.

Many offer canine swims as fundraisers during off-season periods. Make sure the pet is sociable and wears a life jacket.

The best swimmers include breeds used in water rescue or retrieval, such as the Newfoundland, Labrador retriever, Portuguese water dog, poodle and spaniel, as opposed to those with

shorter snouts and airways. The stocky bodies and shorter legs of Scotties and dachshunds are also less conducive to water play.

Dr. Jules Benson, vice president of Veterinary Services at Petplan Pet Insurance, in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, gives three key safety tips: Be alert for signs of tiredness, like trouble staying afloat or struggling to catch their breath; watch for vomiting, diarrhea or fever due

to harmful bacteria in some waterways; and don’t let dogs drink from the ocean.

Ingested salt water can unbalance electrolytes and lead to dehydration, brain damage, kidney failure and even death.

Pet expert Eileen Proctor recommends dabbing sunscreen on pet noses and ears before swimming and putting on the dog’s life jacket before going into, on or near the water. Always ensure that dogs are well-trained to come when called and leave found items and to take a break to rehydrate and rest.

Supervise swimming dogs closely and make sure they aren’t drinking the water. If a dog hesitates to enter the water, leave his non-retractable leash on to reassure him he has assistance if needed, and stay in the pool with him. Establish a cue for entering and leaving the pool and use it before the dog overtires. Don’t allow a pet to climb the pool’s ladder to exit because a paw could slip, causing injury or panic.

When boating, pull into a secluded area with no running propellers, active paddling or underwater snags, and keep the pet on a non-retractable lead or trained to swim close by. Rinse fur immediately after every swim to remove chlorine, bacteria, dirt or salt, and then dry the dog’s inner and outer ears.
