publisher’s letter Let Your Inner Gardener Out

W

hen I was growing up, I didn’t really think about either where my food came from or having to grow it myself, as there was neither any gardeners in the family nor in the neighborhood (that I knew of). Nor did any of my friends or their families. While I didn’t grow up in a huge metropolitan city like downtown Miami - I grew up a within biking distance of South Miami – it was still ‘the city’, and no one grew their own food or hunted nearby, we just went to the grocery store or the restaurant. Sure, at that time, most of Western Dade was still relatively undeveloped and considered ‘country’, where people probably did hunt and garden, but I didn’t know anyone who did. I also lived in a lot of apartments after high school, so a balcony was the only option but after I accidentally killed a cactus in college, I hadn’t much interest in, as I assumed I was a brown thumb anyway. It wasn’t until I got older that I started to wish I had a place to have a garden and I remember how exciting it was in one apartment that there was an outdoor area where I set up a pretty little garden of my own. I didn’t grow anything there, I just replanted or kept them in containers, and it was easy to maintain stuff like coleus and caladiums, but it was mine and I was proud. The main theme of this month’s issue is something that has been growing in popularity, which is urban agriculture. As cities grow and their habitation becomes increasingly vertical, and the push for sustainability becomes a bigger part of city planning, urban agriculture is not only part of development, but also part of maintaining connectivity to our food sources. More restaurant chefs are designing menus along ‘farm-to-table’ concepts, for freshness and flavor, and urban gardening helps ease the pressure of providing food to such concentrated populations so far from farms. As our feature article states, ‘Urban agriculture, harkening back to the Victory Gardens planted to ward off food shortages during World War I and II, is nothing new. While today’s home gardeners have staked out balconies, window boxes and vacant lots in this locavore resurgence, noteworthy pioneers are forging a path to organic urban agriculture on a commercial scale—tapping into new technologies and markets, and turning challenges like dealing with space constraints into fresh opportunities.’ I think part of the increasing trend toward urban gardening is as much spiritual as it is practical – people want to be closer to the earth and to nature, which is also why so many new developments include ‘green space’, and also why Central Park is so precious to the residents of dense metropolises like Manhattan – amidst all that concrete, the trees and foliage make them feel more human and grounded. I now have a lanai and I love to look out at the plants on there and to see the butterflies that happily flutter by the milkweeds on the outside. As the increasing concern over what’s in our food, most of which we don’t produce ourselves, grows, as well as wanting to feel a greater connection to the earth, people living in the ‘concrete jungle’ are getting more interested in and creative with their gardening options. Farmer’s Markets are very popular, as are lettuce walls, something that’s not only being used to produce edible greens, but for interior design with green ‘living walls’. Indoor plants not only clear toxins from the air, they make people feel better. According to a Greatist article for example, ‘hospital patients with plants in their rooms were more positive and had lower blood pressure and stress levels. Similarly, indoor plants may make people smarter by allowing them to stay alert and reducing mental fatigue’. So in my humble opinion, the growing interest in home gardening in general, is pretty simple – wanting to be closer to nature and knowing where what you eat comes from. Amid the din of the fast paced world of technology and instant gratification it’s a deep stirring from our souls and perhaps our ancestors, to get in touch with the land. So whether you’re urban gardening among city dwellers or are lucky enough to roam free among acres, we’ve got you covered in Natural Awakenings. There are some great tips for how to get started, places to get help if you need it, and some recipes to save for when your hard work pays off. So this month, let your inner gardener out to go play in the dirt – it is summer after all! Yours in health, Brooke O. Emery Assistant Publisher 6

Gut Detectives; Pioneering New Frontiers

D

o we really understand the importance of the gut microbiome? This question was asked by Board Certified Holistic Family Nurse Practitioner, Durrell Handwerger who has been studying and applying current research on the connection the microbiome has with all of our bodily systems, and especially the brain. The Integrative Health Center he sees patients at has been using some innovative testing in getting to the root cause and discovering how to heal the gut by focusing on the microbiome. The motto at the center is “It all begins in the gut” which is to say that many of our common illnesses have their source in our gut due to the complex microbiome of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, and parasites. The Integrative Health Center is using the newest technology called DNA GI stool testing which uses the genetic material of anything living in the gut and actually is able to count them and identify them with extreme accuracy. The latest research is starting to show associations between certain types of bacteria and certain diseases such as reactive arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. “Many of these bacteria are considered good until they become overgrown. Then they can cause inflammation or worse autoimmune disorders,“ says Durrell. This new DNA stool technology is allowing practitioners like Durrell to know what really is going on with the gut instead of going with a “gut” feeling. For more information contact Durrell Handwerger, South Florida Integrative Health Center, 210 71st St. #306, Miami Beach, Fl. 33141, (305) 799-1263 or visit www.sfihc.com. See ad, page 9.

hatever you want to do - stop smoking, lose weight, cope with stress, overcome your fear of spiders, attaining your goals, pain relief or just improve your snooker or golf game - self-hypnosis will help you to harness your own inner power and change your life. Valerie Austin, hypnotherapist, trainer, lecturer, author and journalist, is a practicing hypnotherapist who leads workshops and courses on self-hypnosis. Her first book Self-Hypnosis Made Easy was called, “A little gem” by executives at Thorsons publishing, an arm of Harper Collins. Austin’s book is an ideal introduction for anyone interested in self-improvement and how hypnosis can help. It is a simple, practical, step-by-step guide to demonstrating the power of the mind for personal change. In it, Austin shares her wealth of knowledge and expertise from her successful 30 years as a hypnotherapy trainer. Having used hypnosis to regain her memory after a serious car crash which prompted her interest in the subject, she has a unique perspective and presents simple but powerful techniques to give you the skills to use self-hypnosis effectively. The book’s extensive selection of suggestion scripts has been tried and tested with real life clients and it contains fascinating background history of hypnosis, adding credibility to a subject often misunderstood in the media. Anyone will be able to benefit from the positive effects of hypnosis, and the book contains links to a free download webpage so you can experience it immediately. Your Tree Story

Draw A Tree and Embrace Acceptance and Compassion

Significance As you view the buds appear and the leaves take their place on the many trees this year, see how the tree complement each other. When you are rooted in your safe place, you are more likely to be open and willing to offer compassion to others. In the words of Ram Dass “Let’s learn to practice turning people into trees, which means appreciating yourself and others just the way we are”.

T

ake a moment as you sit quietly with your eyes closed and visualize, picture or just imagine you are a tree. What does your tree look like? How would the earth support your roots allowing you to stand strong and tall in all your glory? Which direction is the wind blowing when you notice the breeze dancing thru your branches? As the sun shines down upon your tree, who will appreciate the beautiful array of colors your tree gives to the world? So how do you express yourself as trees do? According to varies ancient traditions the Tree of Life has been a symbol or metaphor that represents an individual’s true nature. No Judgement Everyone, just like a tree, is unique and special. Trees change with the seasons and isn’t that what we do too? We grow, evolve or remain dominate, pause, when making a change or decision. Before language or the written word, ancient civilizations would communicate thru hieroglyphics. Tree drawings provide insights into personality without the restriction of language, culture or gender barriers. There is no right or wrong way to draw a tree. Just

like handwriting analysis, a tree drawing is a neuron-musculature delivery of the subconscious to the paper or canvas. No artistic ability is required, so there are no good or bad trees. With that understanding, there is no judgment placed upon the person who draws a tree. In nature, as in art, some trees are straight, some may slant

In further confirmation of the importance of the gut-brain axis, 18 Italian students at the University of Verona from ages 18 to 33 that took a freezedried mixture of four probiotics for six weeks experienced less depression, anger and fatigue compared to a control group of 15 that consumed a placebo. The positive effects continued, as discovered in follow-up testing three weeks later. The probiotics group also slept better. The probiotic bacteria blend of 4 billion colonyforming units included Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium longum.

Munch Nuts for a Healthy Brain

Emily Li/Shutterstock.com/Shutterstock.com

Seniors that ate more than 10 grams—about two teaspoons—of nuts a day were able to ward off normal cognitive decline and even improve their cognitive functions by up to 60 percent, according to University of South Australia researchers. The study was based on 22 years of records of 4,822 Chinese adults ages 55 and older; 17 percent of them ate nuts every day, most often peanuts. These seniors had as much as 60 percent improved cognitive function compared to those that didn’t eat nuts, and they showed better thinking, reasoning and memory. “Nuts are known to be high in healthy fats, protein and fiber with nutritional properties that can lower cholesterol and improve cognitive health,” says study author Ming Li.

With the aid of a new infrared camera technology called optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), early Alzheimer’s disease can be detected by checking the back of the eyes for weakened and decreased blood vessels, reports a new study. Northwestern Medicine researchers reached the conclusion by comparing the vessels in the eyes of 32 people that exhibited the forgetfulness typical of early-stage Alzheimer’s with those of another 32 people with normal cognitive

abilities. The vascular changes were detected non-invasively, without the need for dyes or expensive MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans. The technology quantifies capillary changes in great detail and with unparalleled resolution, making the eye an ideal mirror for what is going on in the brain. Early detection of Alzheimer’s is critical because existing therapies are more effective if they are started before extensive brain damage and cognitive decline have occurred.

Eat Mostly Plants to Ease Gum Inflammation The inflamed gum condition known as gingivitis is fairly common and often mild, but can be a precursor of more serious periodontal disease linked to Alzheimer’s and rheumatoid arthritis. German researchers at the University of Freiburg tested 30 people: half in a control group that did not change their diet, and half that switched to a diet low in meat and processed carbohydrates and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin D, antioxidants, plant nitrates and fiber. After four weeks, those on the plant-based diet had significantly less gum inflammation and bleeding. They also lost weight and had higher vitamin D levels.

New research has found the basic micronutrient vitamin B12 may be the first good tool for averting the hereditary form of Parkinson’s disease, which accounts for about 15 percent of such cases worldwide. In lab tests, an international team of scientists found that AdoCbl, one of the active forms of vitamin B12, inhibits the activity of a mutated enzyme linked to Parkinson’s. Inhibiting this enzyme appears to help stabilize dopamine release in the brain. Dopamine deficiencies manifest in the muscle rigidity and tremors that are hallmark symptoms of Parkinson’s. Another recent study from the University of California San Francisco that included nonhereditary Parkinson’s patients found that symptoms worsened more quickly in early-stage patients that had low B12 levels than in those with higher levels of the vitamin.

Try Cordyceps to Strengthen the Lungs People suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, can breathe easier by taking the Chinese medicinal fungus Cordyceps sinensis, a new meta-analysis shows. Researchers at the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine conducted a review of 15 high-quality studies that involved 1,238 COPD patients and found that cordyceps significantly improved lung function, exercise endurance and quality of life with no report of any serious adverse effects. Cordyceps, which is said to relax and open the airways, has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an anti-asthmatic, expectorant and cough suppressant.

Snack on Walnuts to Slow Growth of Breast Tumors

The gene expression in the breast cancers of women that ate a handful of walnuts each day for about two weeks changed in a way that suppressed the growth of the tumors, according to a small clinical study from the Marshall University School of Medicine, in Huntington, West Virginia. Five women in the experimental group with biopsies that had revealed breast cancer tumors ate two ounces of walnuts a day until their surgery two to three weeks later. Using cells taken during surgery, researchers identified 456 genes in the walnut-eating group that had significantly changed their expression and slowed tumor growth.

Cannabis is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and one new application for hemp, the no-buzz industrial variety used in fabrics, oils and foods, is cleaning nuclear radiation from toxic soil and removing metals like cadmium, lead, mercury and other pollutants via phytoremediation. Allison Beckett, a cultivation expert at Marijuana.com, says, “Industrial hemp has been used in areas of high radiation, such as Fukushima, [in Japan,] with promising results. Not only does hemp pull toxic, heavy metals from the soil, it actually improves soil structure, making it usable as productive farmland again. Plus, hemp is a vigorous plant that absorbs CO2 rapidly, making it an encouraging solution to climate change.” Hemp phytoremediation has been used in Italy to clean up the small town of Taranto, where a steel plant has been leaking dioxin into the air and soil. The Pennsylvania Industrial Hemp Council and Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, are running a project to test the process in an arsenic-contaminated area in Upper Saucon Township that once harbored a zinc mine.

Ireland Declares Climate Emergency

The Republic of Ireland is the third country worldwide to declare a climate emergency, with both the government and opposition parties agreeing to an amendment to a climate action report. “We’re reaching a tipping point in respect of climate deterioration,” says Climate Action Minister Richard Bruton. “Things will deteriorate very rapidly unless we move very swiftly, and the window of opportunity to do that is fast closing.” The UK governments of Wales and Scotland have also declared climate emergencies. Suggested responses include limiting oil and gas exploration, and issuing an additional biodiversity emergency measure.

Dangerous Dozen Produce to Avoid

The 2019 Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce (Tinyurl.com/ DirtyDozen-Clean15List) highlights increased pesticide use on up to 70 percent of conventionally grown U.S. produce. Several different types of pesticide, insecticide and fungicide residues are present on many fruits and vegetables. The Dirty Dozen list includes strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery and potatoes. The clean 15 list includes avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, frozen sweet peas, onions, papayas, eggplant, asparagus, kiwi, cabbage, cauliflower, cantaloupes, broccoli, mushrooms and honeydew melon. The EWG advises that eating organic produce, especially for pregnant and nursing mothers and young children, should be a national priority.

The world’s oceans may be getting bluer, thanks to climate change. The effect is more likely to be detected by satellites than Earthbound people, and is caused by the depletion of marine phytoplankton as seawater warms. A new study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published in the journal Nature Communications predicts that more than 50 percent of the oceans’ collective 140 million square miles of surface area will likely be affected by 2100. Marine ecologist and leader of the study Stephanie Dutkiewicz says, “These microscopic organisms live in the water and are the base of the marine food chain. If there are less of them in it, the water will be slightly bluer.” Phytoplankton serves as a food source for small sea creatures that are eaten by fish, squid and shellfish. If phytoplankton populations dip too low, vital fisheries in certain areas could be decimated.

Greenhouse Gases Hit Landmark

Certainty that we are facing a climate crisis today and not just in the future was reached in May through an alarming milestone in carbon dioxide levels. Data from the Mauna Loa Observatory, in Hawaii, shows that the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached 415 parts per million, the highest ever recorded. However, environmental organizations charge that ominous news like this is not being communicated to the public to the degree warranted. While the CBS, NBC and ABC nightly TV news reports combined devoted nearly 18 minutes of coverage to the birth of the royal baby between May 6 and 12, airtime regarding climate change and extinction during the same period only amounted to one minute and 21 seconds, and only on CBS. For more information and to get involved, including signing a petition to demand that the media cover the climate crisis and extinction more frequently and in greater depth, visit Tinyurl.com/ClimateCrisisCampaign.

Producing pure hydrogen is expensive and energy intensive, but a research team at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, at Princeton University, used sunlight to pull hydrogen from industrial wastewater by using a specially designed chamber with a “Swiss cheese”-like black silicon interface. As reported in the journal Energy & Environmental Science, the process is aided by bacteria that generate electrical current when consuming organic matter in the wastewater; the current, in turn, aids in the water splitting. It “allows us to treat wastewater and simultaneously generate fuels,” says Jing Gu, a co-researcher and assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at San Diego State University. The scientists say the technology could appeal to refineries and chemical plants, which typically produce their own hydrogen from fossil fuels and face high costs for cleaning wastewater.

Eco-Friendly Outdoor Eating

Rawpixel.com/Shutterstock.com

Save Resources, Reduce Food Waste and More

Midsummer is prime time for outdoor family meals, barbecues and picnics. Selecting the healthiest food, along with eco-friendly materials in preparing for the fun feasts, can fulfill a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle and conserve resources at the same time. n GreenAmerica.org recommends using organic cloth, reusable mesh or string produce bags when grocery shopping; use bamboo utensil sets and plastic straw alternatives made of stainless steel, food-grade silicone, bamboo or glass. n To keep uninvited flying pests like mosquitoes, flies and the like away from humans and food, apply natural repellents—many made of natural,

essential oil; plant-based and foodgrade ingredients can be found at ChasingGreen.org. n According to WebMD.com, charcoal grilling of meat can expose us to two potentially cancer-causing compounds—polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that form when fat from meat drips onto hot coals and are “deposited on food courtesy of flame-ups and rising smoke,” and heterocyclic amines that “are produced when red meat, poultry and fish meet highheat cooking.” Instead, consider using a closed-flame gas grill to reduce exposure to toxins and cook fresh and organic fruits and vegetables like zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms.

n Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warn against eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish due to high levels of mercury, and to consume no more than six ounces of albacore tuna per week for the same reason. Some studies point to avoiding farmed salmon due to potentially high amounts of PCBs. Bypass larger fish of the food chain; look for those that have earned the Marine Stewardship Council or Aquaculture Stewardship Council labels. n The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently estimated that between 30 to 40 percent of all food in the country is wasted. To improve this situation, use glass containers instead of plastic bags to store leftovers. Also consider sustainable food wraps like Bees Wrap (BeesWrap.com). Made from beeswax, organic cotton, jojoba oil and tree resin, they seal and conform to the shape of whatever food is being stored.

Yet, enterprising green thumbs across the country are bringing the farm back to plate’s reach, growing hyperlocal food in backyards, on rooftops, through indoor farms and more. City farming reconnects urbanites to their food sources while bettering the environment, communities, diets and health. Urban agriculture, harkening back to the Victory Gardens planted to ward off food shortages during World War I and II, is nothing new. While today’s home gardeners have staked out balconies, window boxes and vacant lots in this locavore resurgence, noteworthy pioneers are 18

Like many other urban farms, Cultivate the City offers a seasonal farm subscription known as a community supported agriculture (CSA) program that allows city dwellers to buy directly from local producers. Ray’s rooftop greenhouse, located on top of a local hardware store that sells his edible plants at retail, offers all the fixings for a healthy, diverse diet: hydroponic towers of leafy greens, trays of microgreens for corporate clients, specialty varieties of hot peppers for the company’s hot sauce and stacking cubes of an albino strawberry variety that Ray crossbred himself. “There are so many ways to contribute to urban farming, from aquaponics to vermicomposting; it’s about finding your niche,” he says.

C = Commitment

The Grace of Abundance Five Practices to Create a More Abundant Life

A

by Meriflor Toneatto

Commit to gifting ourselves with an abundant mindset because our mindset is critical to our success. One way to quickly shift our mindset to the positive is to concentrate on our desire and ask ourselves, “What do I have to believe for this to be true?” Our mind will creatively generate many possibilities that can get us excited, which then shifts how we think and feel to what is positive. As we do this, we will also create greater confidence in the knowledge that the universe is always working in our favor.

E = Expression Express our passion by first doing what we love. Then find a way to use our passion, purpose and life to serve others. When we do this, our world, our financial abundance and our joy will expand exponentially. Meriflor Toneatto is the author of Money, Manifestation & Miracles: A Guide to Transforming Women’s Relationships with Money. Connect at Meriflor.co.

bundance means plenty—a flowing of love, vitality, wealth, joy, prosperity, success and more. GRACE is an acronym representing five practices that can magnify abundance in all areas of life, including finances.

G = Gratitude There is tremendous power in being grateful, because what we focus on expands. Gratitude opens our heart to receive and give blessings. This puts us in a space to have more things to be grateful for. Practicing gratitude can be as simple as saying, “I am grateful for…” or “I am thankful for…” If we find ourselves in a negative state, practice gratitude even for as brief a period as 60 seconds. It will positively shift our emotion, thereby allowing us to be open to abundance.

R = Receiving To graciously receive can be as simple as accepting a compliment. Another way to receive is by requesting our heart’s desire. There is nothing wrong with wanting more. The truth is that we can have more—as much as we are willing to receive.

A = Alignment The key way to get into alignment for more abundance is to know our purpose, follow our passion and work on releasing internal fears and doubts. July 2019

any home gardeners readily list flies, wasps and beetles among the “pests” in their gardens. However, many of these are actually pollinators that help boost production of fruits and vegetables; others are beneficial insects that keep the real plant-killers at bay. A quick call to the local cooperative extension service can help sort out friend from foe— and that’s just the beginning of what this valuable, underutilized resource can offer. Each year, millions in federal taxpayer dollars help fund county agricultural extension programs administered through the 108 colleges and universities that comprise the nation’s land grant university system. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which supplies the money, also helps fund science-based research meant to reach not only farmers, but home gardeners seeking advice on best practices. The USDA is trying to do a better job of raising public awareness of assistance that’s readily available, free of charge, especially now that it’s getting more funding.

County extension agents are on the front lines of this effort, offering low- or no-cost soil testing, handbooks on a variety of local gardening topics and workshops on everything from making rain barrels and creating rain gardens to implementing eco-friendly pest control, cultivating native plants and employing best practices for organic gardening. Master gardeners that volunteer their expertise are central to supporting extension outreach activities. “We would love more business from the public,” says Weston Miller, an associate professor with Oregon State University’s extension service. “The public service of

recall of your regular dreams. We’re all dreaming every night, every time we have a REM cycle, about every 90 minutes that we are asleep, even if you don’t remember your dreams. It’s easier for most people to improve their dream recall. It’s as simple as saying to yourself before bed, “I want to remember my dreams tonight.” The more intention you have, the more you think about your dreams during the day, can be enough to trigger you to better remember your dreams. If you pay close attention to your environment, looking and examining it and asking yourself whether it’s real, you will then ask yourself the same question in a dream.

How do you feel lucid dreaming can improve our overall well-being?

You can practice a speech you are worried about. If you are an athlete, you can mentally prepare. It can help with your mental health. You can use lucid dreams to confront your demons; you can summon someone that you want to have a conversation with and practice talking with them. They are awe-inspiring. Knowing you are lying in bed, but also feeling, physically, that you are in another place, is very powerful.

What steps can we take to improve our ability to recall dreams?

Keep a dream journal. It doesn’t have to be pen and paper; you can speak your dreams into your phone in the morning or in the middle of the night if you wake up… whatever you can do to train yourself to hold onto them because if you don’t remember them when you wake up, then they will fade pretty quickly. As soon as I started keeping a dream journal, I was amazed at how many I was remembering. When getting started, make sure to write something every morning, even “I don’t remember anything.” The habits will become ingrained and you’ll start to remember dreams. Mental Health, Trauma and the Gut

When it comes to the vagus nerve, anxiety is physical. Post-traumatic stress is rooted in neurobiology and experienced in the body, not just the mind, says Arielle Schwartz, Ph.D., a Boulder, Colorado-based clinical psychologist and author of The Complex PTSD Workbook: A Mind-Body Approach to Regaining Emotional Control and Becoming Whole. “This is why you can’t simply think or talk your way out of your trauma reactions.” According to Schwartz, “Disruptions in the gut flora, which often occur with overuse of antibiotics, can have a significant impact on mental health. An imbalance in the gut can lead to an inflammatory response in the immune system and a wide range of disruptive symptoms.” Aylward notes that 95 percent of the body’s mood-boosting chemical serotonin resides in the enteric nervous system, which governs the function of the gastrointestinal tract. “The brain-gut axis is becoming increasingly important as a therapeutic target for psychiatric and GI disorders,” she says. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, explains the trauma loop. “Developmental trauma impairs the integrative circuits of the brain and nervous system—the prefrontal cortex. When this happens, the brain will be hyperalert, interpreting some non-threatening situations as threatening.

“Learning to be aware of our internal state and learning calming techniques helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system and can go a long way,” says Siegel. “High ventral vagal tone means having a state of calm.”

Vagus Power Everyone can benefit from increased vagal tone, which goes hand-in-hand with engaging the parasympathetic nervous system for optimum equilibrium at the cellular level. Acupuncture, chiropractic—with a focus on the cranial nerves—massage, meditation, singing, laughing loudly, chanting mantras, gentle yoga and exercise, positive social interactions, belly breathing and chanting all make the vagus nerve a happy camper. These activities promote relaxation and help to decrease inflammation. “As a certified yoga instructor, I can attest to a wide range of natural vagus nerve stimulation techniques, especially using the breath,” says Schwartz. “Diaphragmatic breathing creates a gentle massage across your digestive organs, releases the diaphragm and stimulates nerve fibers within the lungs. Heart rate is reduced.” Brief exposure to cold water or cold air improves vagal tone and is a good option when anxiety is high. Eating cold-water fish like wild salmon or other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, seaweed, hemp, flax or chia seeds provides vagal nourishment.

Vagus-Nourishing Diet Tips Advice from gut health expert Hannah Aylward: 4 Eat plenty of vegetables, high-quality proteins, fiber and healthy fats. 4 A diet low in sugar and processed carbohydrates supports healthy vagus nerve function by maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. 4 Practice intermittent fasting, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (not recommended for people suffering from adrenal fatigue or high stress).

ummer is an ideal time to add a healthy dose of fresh, organic herbs to make cool salads, luscious smoothies and other hot-weather eats and treats. Herbs are not only a flavorful addition to any meal, they are also chock-full of health benefits, from lowering blood pressure and improving mineral balance to increasing immune support, hydration, energy and healthy skin. Most people consider using herbs in small amounts as seasonings for recipes such as spaghetti sauce, soups or desserts. However, they are edible plants, just like kale and spinach. Although they tend to have strong flavors when dried, fresh herbs are usually quite mild and can be eaten in large amounts like any other vegetable.

Cool Benefits “Summertime herbs are important for dealing with the heat and humidity that the season brings,” says Nathaniel Whitmore, a Chinese medicine herbalist and shiatsu massage practitioner in Milford, Pennsylvania. An herb that he recommends for this time of year is American ginseng, which, unlike its Chinese namesake, is considered a “cooling” herb and helps keep the body moist. When combined with fresh chrysanthemum flowers, the result is a powerful elixir that both hydrates and energizes. “A piece of American ginseng root and a few chrysanthemums placed in a jar of water and set on a windowsill for a few days makes a great cold infusion,” says Whitmore. “You can store it in the fridge for a few days and drink it in small amounts at a time to benefit from its energizing and hydrating properties.”

~Nathaniel Whitmore Soft-stemmed herbs such as parsley and dill can be used in large amounts in salads and summer sandwiches. Other heat-tolerant herbs that are easy to grow include lemon balm, rosemary, lavender, mint and basil. “Lemon balm is great for headaches and insomnia that are common during summer heat waves,” says Michelle Schoffro Cook, Ph.D., an herbalist and doctor of natural medicine, in Ontario, Canada. “Basil can help reduce summer achiness, while lavender serves as a relaxant and an excellent bug repellant.” In addition to relieving headaches and restlessness, lemon balm is also beneficial for those that suffer from high blood pressure. A study in the Journal of Herbal Medicine reports that it is helpful in reducing blood pressure in patients with chronic stable angina. Rosemary, another herb used for sleep disorders, was found to also help improve memory and decrease anxiety in a study conducted in Iran at the Kerman University of Medical Sciences. One study in 2009 by researchers in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Allahbad, in India, revealed that polyphenols found in herbs and plants harbor antioxidant properties that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and neurodegenerative disorders.

Fresh Is Best While herbs can be used in their extracted and dried forms, the most significant health benefits are often found in the raw, organic plant. “Fresh is better,” says Whitmore. “This is especially true when it comes to the more aromatic plants such as basil and lavender. A lot of the more volatile constituents are lost during the drying process.” Most herbs grow best in dry garden areas that receive at least eight hours of sun each day. Although some herbs can grow in partially shaded locations, they won’t be as flavorful. Many herbs can also be grown in containers or pots. Maria Noël Groves, a clinical herbalist in Allenstown, New Hampshire, and author of Grow Your Own Herbal Remedies: How to Create a Customized Herb Garden to Support Your Health & Well-Being, lists lemon balm, Korean mint, anise hyssop and purple basil as among her favorite summer culinary and beverage herbs that are easy to grow in pots. These make easy pickings for wraps, salads, sandwiches and more. “Lemon balm can also be used to make infused water,” says Groves. “With lemon verbena, lemon grass or holy basil, the result is refreshing and calming.” Just take a few sprigs and place them in either plain or seltzer water. The result is a delicately flavored beverage that’s also healthy and hydrating. Kajsa Nickels is a freelance writer and a music composer. She resides in northeastern Pennsylvania. Herbal Chill-Outs Lemon Balm Vinegar This infusion can be used in place of plain vinegar in summer salad dressings. According to the Journal of Medicine, lemon balm is helpful in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Combining it with apple cider vinegar adds extra health benefits to the mix, including digestion enhancement, detoxing and inflammation reduction. 2-3 cups fresh lemon balm, washed 1 qt apple cider vinegar Add coarsely chopped lemon balm leaves and stems to a 32-ounce mason jar. Add vinegar until lemon balm is completely covered. Allow to sit in a cool, dark place for two to four weeks before straining. From the book Be Your Own Herbalist by Michelle Schoffro Cook. n 1982, the Japanese government coined the term Shinrin-yoku (“taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing”) to inspire people to visit and appreciate national parks. Today, that walk in the woods has become a medically recommended activity worldwide for improving immunity, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, managing chronic pain and promoting better sleep. The research supporting the physical and mental benefits of forest bathing is so compelling that it’s advocated by the National Institute of Public Health of Japan and prescribed to patients there. Researchers from the University of East Anglia, in England, examined years of studies and found significant evidence that experiencing nature has a positive impact on health. Published in the journal Environmental Research in 2018, the metaanalysis involving 290 million participants from 20 countries concluded that spending time in green spaces lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and reduces the stress hormone cortisol. The study also noted a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes and death from heart disease.

Terpenes and Tree Therapy

Another recent review of studies, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, concluded that Shinrin-yoku can ease the symptoms of adult depression. “Forest bathing plugs us into something we all seek—a source of peace and well-being. The thing that first hooked me into being a forest bathing guide was reading the robust body of research that proves the benefits of forest bathing,” says Judy Beaudette, board secretary of Friends of North Creek Forest, in Bothell, Washington. Melanie Choukas-Bradley, a certified forest therapy guide and author of The Joy of Forest Bathing: Reconnect With Wild Places & Rejuvenate Your Life, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, attests to the therapeutic value of forest bathing. “Even occasional nature immersion can have beneficial health effects that can last for days. Many doctors are now prescribing nature to patients. There’s an organization devoted to this called Park Rx America.” She recommends just 20 minutes during a lunch break to sit on a bench or on the ground beneath trees.

Shinrin-yoku is intended to engage the trinity of body-mind-spirit. “The main purpose is not exercise or getting from point A to point B, but rather having a mindful, sensory experience in nature. It isn’t some prescribed task you need to do, like pushups,” explains Hannah Fries, a poet and author of Forest Bathing Retreat: Find Wholeness in the Company of Trees. She communes with the wild for both health and inspiration. “Even if it’s only 20 minutes a week, go outside without a phone or other electronic device. Walk slowly. Look more closely. Listen. Smell. Touch. Interact with the living, breathing world around you. It’s that simple.” Choukas-Bradley says that observance is key. Recalling her first forest bathing experience, she says, “We paid attention to our breath and tuned in to the sights, sounds and sensations all around us. I noticed a perfect spider’s web, just barely trembling in the slightest breeze, its creator clinging to the center.” She recommends finding a “wild home”—a neighborhood park, garden or backyard tree. “Make it a practice to find a ‘sit spot’ where you can quietly observe beauty and are apt to feel a sense of awe. Psychology researchers have shown that experiencing awe has many positive effects on emotional health.” It doesn’t matter if we commune with nature in a rural or urban setting, only that we remain dialed in to our surroundings. “Forest bathing is a tool for slowing down our buzzing minds and practicing a secret superpower—the skill of consciously choosing what we put our attention on,” says Beaudette. There are many theories of why spending time in the woods or any other natural place makes us feel good; for example, findings published in the journal Toxicological Research in 2017 attribute the immune-boosting, mood-lifting benefits of forest bathing to natural terpenes released into the air by trees, especially conifers. Terpenes contain anti-inflammatory properties that strengthen the body’s natural defenses.

The Pure Joy of Play

Why Kids Need Unstructured Fun

N

by Ronica O’Hara

ot so long ago, kids would be shooed out the door to play and told to return home at meal time. But the rising use of digital devices and kids’ highly scheduled sports and school activities, as well as parental fears about safety, has made that kind of unstructured play rare—with resulting drops in children’s independence, resilience and creativity, experts say. In fact, play has been shown to be so critical to children’s development that an American Academy of Pediatrics 2018 clinical report, “The Power of Play,” recommends that doctors write prescriptions for it. “Play is not frivolous; it is brain building,” concludes the report. It defines play as voluntary, fun and spontaneous activities that engross a child, often resulting in joyous discovery, and includes imaginative make-believe, experimenting and risk-taking. It cites 147 studies showing that play builds skills critical for adult success such as problem solving, collaboration and creativity; decreases stress, fatigue, injury and depression; and

increases range of motion, agility, coordination, balance and flexibility. Here are some ways to up the play in children’s lives:

1

Give them lots of free time away from devices. Yes, they

might be bored at first—but boredom enhances creativity, partly by allowing for daydreaming, concludes a study from the UK’s University of Central Lancashire.

2

Encourage fun, rather than competition. By age 6, 60 percent

of American boys and 47 percent of girls are participating on organized sport teams, but three out of four kids quit sports by age 13—one major reason being, “I was not having fun.” Play, on the other hand, is based on pure enjoyment and spontaneous collaboration among kids, minus overanxious adult “sidelining”. “When children play in their own ways, they generally play cooperatively. We adults impose competition, unfortunately. Yet even in our competitive society, the really successful and

happy people are the ones who are oriented toward cooperation,” says Peter Gray, Ph.D., a Boston College psychology professor and author of Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life.

the first one wasn’t fully administered and the infection wasn’t effectively cleared. It’s important to reseed the pet’s gastrointestinal (GI) system with friendly microorganisms—probiotics—during and after antibiotic therapy to reestablish a healthy balance of gut bacteria. This will also help keep a dog or cat’s digestive system working optimally and the immune system strong.

Alternatives to Antibiotics

Beyond Antibiotics Pets Can Heal With Natural Approaches by Karen Shaw Becker

L

ike people, pets can develop allergies to medications that are overprescribed, including antibiotics, which also have a long list of side effects—many of which are long-term. There is also the escalating problem of resistance, which is the result of too-frequent and unnecessary use of these drugs. One of the most important things to know is that dogs and cats are exposed to antibiotics when they eat food containing the meat of factory-farmed animals, which includes about 99 percent of pet foods on the market today. The exception is a very small number that contain free-range, organic ingredients.

Antibiotic Resistance

In many cases, even when bacteria are exposed for the first time to a particular antibiotic, the majority will die, but some will survive and pass on that resistance to other bacteria. The problem is not that certain disease-causing bacteria are antibioticresistant, but that the resistance genes in any type of bacteria can transfer their ability to survive to billions of other bacteria. 34

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

This is how superbugs are born. These are a strain of bacteria able to withstand assault by multiple types of antibiotics. When a veterinarian can no longer eliminate bacterial infections with antibiotics, the life of the animal is threatened, and that’s the biggest concern. If a veterinarian makes a diagnosis of infection, ask for a culture and sensitivity test. Otherwise, he or she is making a guess at what type of organism is present and the best antibiotic to treat it. Each time an unnecessary or inappropriate antibiotic is prescribed, the potential for resistance increases. Only in an emergency situation should a veterinarian prescribe an antibiotic before the culture and sensitivity test can be performed. The vet can then switch medications if necessary when the results arrive. Giving the proper dose of the antibiotic at the proper intervals and using up the entire prescription is important, even if the pet seems to be fully recovered before the medication has run out. This will ensure the infection is totally resolved and prevent the pet from having to take another full course of antibiotics because

www.namiami.com

Many conditions for which antibiotics are often indiscriminately prescribed respond very well to a combination of natural therapies, including herbs, homeopathic remedies, nutraceuticals, immune system stimulants and specific nutritional interventions. Functional medicine veterinarians, a group that is thankfully growing in number, realize this and are able to partner with pet parents to offer alternatives to antibiotics. A 2016 study showed cranberry extract to be as or more effective in preventing E. coli-related urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs as short-term antibiotic treatment. In addition, cranberry extract can help fight multidrug-resistant bacteria in dogs with recurrent E. coli UTIs. In a study of shelter dogs, researchers compared the use of probiotics to antibiotics to treat acute diarrhea caused by stress. They concluded probiotic therapy was as effective as antibiotic therapy. In addition, dogs that were unresponsive to antibiotics appeared to benefit significantly from subsequent probiotic treatment. Oregano oil, propolis, olive leaf, essential oils, colloidal silver and Manuka honey help reduce bacterial skin infections caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with good success. If a dog or cat isn’t facing a lifethreatening health situation, talk with the veterinarian about alternatives to antibiotics. In these situations, pet parents often find it beneficial to consult a functional medicine or integrative veterinarian whose goal is to treat these problems by starting with the least toxic options first. Pet First Aid Kits

Building One May Save Your Companion

By Mary Oquendo

A

ccording to the American Animal Hospital Association, 25 percent more pets could have been saved from an accident if only one pet first aid technique was applied prior to veterinary treatment. A home pet first aid kit is vital to that end but it turns out that many homes with pets don’t have one prepared. A suggested list includes: •

Activated charcoal to absorb ingested poisons. However, any item intended to counteract poisoning should not be used unless directed by a veterinarian. Protocols vary and what will help in one instance can cause harm in another. Antibiotic cream for wounds. Don’t use triple antibiotic if you have cats. While it is rare, the combination of the three ingredients may cause a fatal reaction in some cats. In addition, avoid any products with essential oils with cats as they cannot metabolize most oils. Antihistamine and safety pin for minor allergic reactions. Specifically look for diphenhydramine gels with a liquid center. The safety pin is used to puncture the gel cap and squirt the liquid directly onto to the tongue of the pet. This is the fastest way for an anaphylactic pet to absorb the antihistamine. Consult a veterinarian for proper dosing. Anti-

histamines cannot be safely used with all pets as it may interfere with other medications or medical conditions. Apps for smart phones. A recommended one is the ASPCA’s Pet Poison app. It’s free and will dial the number for the Pet Poison Hotline. As minutes matter in a poisoning situation, this is invaluable if you cannot reach a local veterinarian for instructions. The second is a veterinarian locator. This is useful if you are on vacation with your pet and need to find the closest veterinarian. Baking soda to absorb topical poisons or chemicals. Bandanas as they can replace triangular bandages. They can also serve as slings to take the weight off an injured limb. Eyewash serves double duty. It can be used to flush out both eyes and wounds. Gauze comes in three varieties: gauze roll, gauze pads and nonstick gauze pads. The gauze roll is wider and is good for larger wounds. The nonstick gauze is more expensive, but should be used on top of the wound; then place the cheaper gauze on top of it. Nonstick gauze will not remove the scab when it is time to replace the bandaging. Honey packets for hypoglycemic pets. Use this only under advice of veterinarian. Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in a dog. As this is used for poisoning, consult a veterinarian first. Dosage will vary. Vomiting is not automatic for poisoning. If the ingested substance is caustic, it will burn the throat on its way out. You cannot use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in cats. Cats cannot metabolize hydrogen peroxide. Liquid bandage. It is an asset if you know how to use it properly. Used incorrectly, it can damage surrounding tissue, as well as trap bacteria in the wound. Your veterinarian can instruct you in proper usage. Do not use superglue. It is not manufactured for medical use and, as such, the manufacturer can change ingredients and formulation without consideration for safety on wounds. Muzzles are a must. If you need to use your pet first aid kit, this pet is likely in

pain. Any pet in pain is a bite risk, even one you know well. Plastic baggies to collect a vomit or fecal sample. This may be necessary if the pet has been poisoned and you are unsure of what was ingested. When not in use, it can store smaller items for easy accessibility. Rubber gloves to protect you from any zoonotic, and also to collect vomit or fecal samples. Sanitary napkins to absorb blood. Squirt bottle to deliver hydrogen peroxide down the throat of a dog. Styptic powder for use on nails only. It stings and this pet is already in pain. In addition, styptic powder is not sterile; you may introduce bacteria into the wound. There are newer products on the market that function as a styptic powder and can be used for wounds as well. Tea bags contain tannic acid and are effective in stopping bleeding. While sugar is effective, it is not recommended because the pet may be diabetic or prediabetic. Vet wrap keeps the wound secure and dry. It is also expensive. The human counterpart, which is the exact same thing, is a fraction of the cost. Wound cleanser. You have several options in this case. The first is sterile saline solution, also known as eyewash. The second is a chlorohexidine-based cleanser, which is easy to find. Most stores that sell first-aid items will carry it. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as it degrades surrounding tissue and cats cannot metabolize it. Do not use alcohol as it stings. Do not use sterile, tap or bottled water; it disrupts the salt balance of the cells and slows healing.

Many of these items have expiration dates and should be checked periodically. When wounds are treated quickly, they heal faster with less pain. Your pet will thank you for that. AQUAFIT MIAMI S

ince 2008, AquaFit Miami (AQF) has been shattering the stereotype that water fitness is only for old people using buoyancy foam noodles to 50’s and 60’s music (ref; Cocoon, a 1985 sci-fi/fantasy film). AQF uses modern design plastic perforated hand grips (like dumbbells) and fins that wrap around your ankles in different sizes/resistances. The gear is utilized by the Navy Seals for aquatic training and war vets for rehabilitation. “Our workouts and/or recovery sessions for upper, lower, core and cardio help people get in shape, or for those already active, it takes their workouts to a whole new level.” Male and female clients range in age from 9 to 95 years old; from marathoners to stroke survivors; from pregnant moms to autistic children; from combating obesity to ankle, knee and hip replacement recipients; especially for those who cannot put any compression (gravity based exercises) on their joints or have range restrictions and need the support and safety of the water. AQF workouts are incredibly adaptive helping everyone who tries it to get stronger, attain better cardio endurance and a significant increase in core strength. enjoying it in the comfort of their home, condo or apartment pool. They also train in the ocean, waves permitting of course and if you don’t want to get your hair wet or you can’t swim, that’s okay too. AquaFit Miami is really the antithesis of what CrossFit is about! In the water, your body temperature stays lower, so you don’t over heat nor expend any energy to keep your temperature down. So you can push harder without your body shutting down. The mind/body connection is unlike the gym or Pilates too since you are not tethered to any device or equipment and this greatly helps with co-ordination. When you do some of the exercises you will notice the strength difference from you right and left side, helping balance out your body strength. Another advantage to working in the water is you don’t “max out”, since water constricts your blood vessels your oxygenated blood flows through your body quicker (think of a cinched garden hose allowing water to move more rapidly from the spout) so even when your heart rate increases your recovery to a resting heat rate is less time and you can pusher harder than on land. AQF workouts allow you to experience the gear as an extension of your body

to move in the water in ways you cannot image on land. Everyone is graceful in the liquid weight room and you are one with nature, outdoors in an environment that is conducive to good health and positive wellbeing. AquaFit Miami provides all the gear (and they sell it too) and offers one-on-one, small groups (up to six people) and larger classes (6+). relationship with the feminine? How might the feminine, and what she means to me, have been condemned throughout my life? How might my life be different if I felt supported in the expression of my unique femininity? and What can I do to nourish my own feminine essence? By committing to our own path of reclamation and wholeness, we do a massive service to the healing of our world.

Reclaiming the Feminine:

A Call for Collective Healing By Maria Lagomasino

M

ore and more of us are understanding that reclaiming the lost feminine is key in our collective evolution towards harmony and wholeness. Individually as conscious beings and collectively as a species interrelated with all other beings on this planet, restoring and honoring the feminine is key to reversing the damage done to Earth, to each other, and ourselves. The feminine and what she represents is vast, utterly numinous, and unique to each being. However, the journey of healing the feminine takes shape as we explore her archetypal realm, acknowledge centuries of abuse and repression from an imbalanced “patriarchal” consciousness, and understand the collective wounds left by this painful legacy, and how they influence us uniquely. The journey of healing takes root when we individually and collectively accept responsibility to transmute these wounds, and in so doing, reclaim the power and purity within our feminine essence. It is important to note that we all contain unique expressions of masculine and feminine energy, regardless of our biological gender. The calling to reclaim the feminine is for men and women alike, for by restoring the feminine to her nature,

her wholeness, she is able to work in partnership with the masculine. This partnership of restored feminine and balanced masculine energy holds enormous power to give birth to a “new earth”—a reality of grounded, embodied harmony, love, wholeness. By doing the work to reclaim the feminine and committing to release culturally conditioned distortions of these energies, we are walking towards a new reality where masculine and feminine co-create, together, a world grounded in the vision of love. By closely examining how the wounded feminine has manifested in our own lives, we can consciously choose to release these wounds and move towards a collective remedy! Perhaps a good place to start is to cultivate a personal relationship with the feminine and nourish her in the many aspects of our lives. The feminine encompasses the universal energies of: nourishment, emotions, creativity, relationship, interdependence, Earth, natural cycles of life, birth, and death; sensuality, beauty, intuition… the list goes on. We can ask ourselves the questions, what is the feminine to me? What does she represent? How can I re-establish my

For those needing that extra push to act or experiencing more resistance than usual when even contemplating reaching out, there are tiny steps to be taken to get in the right mindset for receiving emotional guidance and assistance.

Dare to Ask for Help by Doris Jucht

E

motional fragility is widespread among human beings, primarily because it is a byproduct of any failings in the way that we were raised by our caretakers. The fact that we achieve adulthood does not necessarily mean we’re equipped with all the tools needed to manage the challenges involved in becoming and being emotionally independent. And what does it mean exactly to attain emotional independence? It sounds more like a utopic stage than an attainable goal. The truth is that it is difficult to learn how to deal with life’s everyday challenges, and especially with the ones that touch our essence, our feelings and our emotions. It is very challenging to transition from being guided to being on our own, or from having someone to ask for suggestions to proposing and selecting the right answers ourselves. It may look like we’re asking too much from individuals immersed in the already complicated dynamic of this new era. It seems, however, despite how obvious the suggestion, asking for help is an option that oftentimes gets ignored mostly because individuals en route to emotional independence don’t dare ask for help. In this era of self-made social media stardom before you’re 30, or even 25, there is an increased level of shame, frustration and disappointment associated with feeling 38

not smart enough or strong enough to figure things out on our own. After all, we are the kids and grandkids of the self-help generation and live in an era of self-made entrepreneurs and a do-it-yourself frenzy. With the wide availability of informational tools and YouTube videos, some people even associate looking for guidance with a lack of resourcefulness or even a lack of intellectual capacity. Aside from that, there is still the pervasive stigma from mental illness, which has survived almost unscathed from previous generations. Yet none of these prejudices and preconceptions could be further from the truth. It is healthy, reasonable and valid to look for help to develop our dual pillars of radical honesty and proactive behavior to produce self-awareness and tangible results on our route to emotional independence. Support and guidance can help achieve unprecedented breakthroughs and a healthy balance in life. The right support can ultimately help you discover how to choose a career path that’s based on a deep understanding of your strengths, identify and develop your talents, and achieve greater self-confidence and self-efficacy. In other words, looking for help will allow you to attain a deeper understanding of the value you bring into your environment, and how to consistently perform at your best. The confidence gained from such outcomes,

www.namiami.com

in turn, will allow you to tackle the challenges of emotional growth, essentially by establishing behavioral dynamics steeped in honesty and proactivity. For those needing that extra push to act or experiencing more resistance than usual when even contemplating reaching out, there are tiny steps to be taken to get in the right mindset for receiving emotional guidance and assistance. Firstly, it would involve accepting a weak point. For this purpose and to avoid stumbling on issues of vulnerability, pick a failing you recognize in your life that is not close to heart. Rather, choose a weakness that has an impact on your life yet is not primordial. Be honest about the consequences of your shortcomings regarding that topic or activity. Next, visualize the full long-term consequences and costs of inaction. Then, elaborate a comprehensive plan of action to address your shortcoming that involves obtaining outside help. Finally, visualize again, now on a positive note, a desirable outcome that emerges from your conscious decision to seek assistance. As you may see, letting go of the stigmas related to searching for help can unlock a myriad of benefits for individuals and set them well onto a path in which they’ll be able to increase their everyday effectiveness. So, go ahead, dare to ask for help. The consequences may surprise you! As a Life Coach, Doris Jucht brings nearly 20 years of experience. wrong”. The second entry gets a little closer to a more widely used definition: “being in accordance with or determined by nature; having or constituting a classification based on features existing in nature”. Or, in other words, born this way. This brings us, naturally, to the other word in the phrase: beauty. One suitable definition of beauty is “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit”. So, we can fairly describe natural beauty as something in accordance with or determined by nature that pleasurably exalts the spirit. That can be anything—from the Northern Lights to Idris Elba, from the awesome experience of a volcano erupting to the sublime sweetness of a sleeping newborn. Indeed, we always see beauty from our own perspective and it can’t really be any other way. Let us not forget that natural includes us. We are not outside of nature; instead, we are an integral part of it. So, not only is our appreciation of beauty entirely personal, our experience of “nature” also comes from within—and we realize that we are inside the fishbowl looking out, not the other way around. To paraphrase Annie Dillard, it is in beholding the world that we create the world we live in. We behold natural beauty to the extent that we express and appreciate those qualities in ourselves and in others. Understanding this is the key to increasing your own natural beauty.

How do we do this?

Beholding the Depth and Breadth of Natural Beauty by Meg Reilly

W

hen you hear the term “natural beauty,” what comes to mind? Do you think of a person, perhaps a woman, whose attractive features look young, healthy and flawless? Or perhaps your thoughts take a completely different direction, conjuring up images of the Grand Canyon, or a giant sequoia, or a tropical waterfall. Clearly the term means different things to different people, bringing to mind the adage, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” From cosmetics and Kardashians to Katmandu and kaleidoscopes, our ideas of beauty certainly come from within. There are as many definitions of the phrase as there are people and their moods—which begs the question: What is natural beauty? Natural is one of those wonderful words that we all think we can easily define. Everyone knows what natural means, right? So it’s surprising to look it up and see half a column in the dictionary devoted to this simple word. In fact, the first entry in one book might surprise you: “based on an inherent sense of right and

Deepen your awareness that you are part of nature and subject to all the forces therein. Nature is neither good nor bad; it simply is. Being a natural being means you follow the arc of all things natural. You are born, you go through youth, maturation, aging and you die. Every natural thing follows this pattern. Doing your best to improve conditions for a good life will create an environment in which you flourish. Find your sweet spot. Follow your bliss. Seek out experiences that exalt your mind and spirit. What a wonderful notion; it sounds holy, doesn’t it? How often do you feel exalted? This can come from anywhere: a yoga class, listening to music or reading an engrossing book. It can come from discovering something new about a friend, volunteering to clean up a community center or from slipping into clean sheets and drifting into a sound sleep after a tiring day. Here’s the irony of natural beauty: the more you recognize your place in nature by experiencing things that exalt your mind and spirit, the more your own natural beauty emerges. You will understand better that you are not a separate being, above or below others. Your tendency to see things as relative grows and expands your awareness that you are “part of ”. You see the interplay between what you carry within you and how that affects everything you perceive in the world around you. It is then that you appreciate and can easily share your own natural beauty. Meg Reilly is a counselor, writer and artist. Natures Therapy

How to Create an Indoor Serenity Garden by Marcia Kendall

I

t is well known that having indoor plants contributes to a happier, healthier home. Plants have numerous health benefits that can alleviate stress, lower blood pressure, improve mood and enhance indoor air quality. Moving beyond that, consider not just having houseplants, but having “health” plants, via an indoor garden scape that can serve as a sacred serenity space to “Zen out” and facilitate mindfulness, meditation and serenity. Much like an altar for prayer, an indoor serenity garden serves to keep us continually connected to nature, something we’ve strayed from increasingly since social media scene took its place in our distracted lives. More important than ever is the startling fact that according to the World Health Organization (WHO), indoor air quality is 10 times worse, on average, than outdoor air due to many potential factors (mold, dust, radon, smoke, lead paint and more). This poor quality indoor air causes a slew of health problems, including: asthma, high blood pressure, migraines, anxiety and even cancer. It’s crucial to keep aligned with the

40

natural advantages of all that nature provides to heal, help and enhance our lives every moment. When we lose our connection to our natural world, we lose our connection with our very core of existence: our chemical and biological makeup; our need for negative ions, spiritual and physical cleansing and fresh air. Many living in urban or suburban areas don’t have easy access to the wealth of nature. By emulating an outdoor garden indoors, you receive numerous benefits not available from any other source of medication or therapy. This type of eco therapy, known as Nature/Garden Therapy, allows you to create and tend to something that you also become a part of while meditating, praying or relaxing in its energy field, thereby receiving detoxification in numerous forms. Here are some ideas to create your serenity garden and the added benefits. •

Create a circle space, where you may sit in the middle of a circle of plants in an area that has as much sunlight

www.namiami.com

as possible. Circles create a continual energy that allows energy to flow as our own biorhythms do. There is no break or stop in the process. There should be two plants for every 100 square feet of space, with every other plant being a tall one; this allows for protection and privacy. Be sure that all of your plants are contained in pots that are made of natural materials; no synthetic materials should be allowed in your sacred space. Using only natural materials keeps things well, natural and will not break the flow of Earth energy. Some plants best for improving indoor air quality are English Ivy, Variegated Snake Plant, Peace Lily, Broadleaf Lady Palm, most types of Fern and Chrysanthemum. Simply taking deep cleansing breaths in this space can elevate your level of being in the moment, feeling alive (as one with the plants) and consciousness (observe the vitality of the plants and meditate on it). Have a water fountain in this space to create a beautiful nature sound for breathing and meditative benefits. Not only does the sound of water encourage relaxation and stress relief, but water contains negative ions, which cleans the air, improves mood and increases mental focus. Use an aromatherapy diffuser or have scented herbs in your serenity garden, especially lavender, sage (for spiritual cleansing) and patchouli. Aromatherapy gives the bonus benefit of additional stress relief, helps stave off depression and anxiety, and treats your houseguests, family and pets to the added benefits. While meditating, focus on how these plants offer you scents and aromas that are natural intoxicants and thank them for their contributions. Add sound therapy in your garden or communicate with your plants regularly. Plants are super sensitive to the energy around them. Just like humans, when nurtured they thrive, but when neglected or mistreated, they suffer. Using positive, loving words when in their company and watering them will

foster growth for you both. You can include your plants in a guided meditation by playing the recording out loud while sitting in your garden. Playing calming, instrumental music with at least 432 MHZ in your serenity garden also encourages relaxation and tranquility for the plants and you. Sit on the floor with comfortable pillows (made of allnatural materials) or a cotton mat for grounding energy. To keep the ritual of meditation or prayer sacred, use these materials for this purpose only. This is your sacred, personal space for serenity, so everything within its boundaries should be kept separate. Creating this space for yourself allows the ritual of returning to become a safe haven to release tension, negativity, stress, anxiety or depression. Use the mantra: “What I release here will be cleansed and released.” Think of your plants as not just air purifiers, but also soul purifiers that will clear your own energy and create clean, fresh air to breathe in, live in and go forth from into the world anew each and every day. Consider adding natural stones you’ve collected from your walks in the woods or use crystals for healing and balance. Stones from the Earth contain energy that is grounding, soothing to the touch and calming. You can use them to work on certain Chakras or to balance your energy. Sit on your cushions or mat and hold them in your hand. Gather stones that call out to you on your walks and place them in the soil around your favorite plants for visual appeal and as a reminder of your pleasant experience on those walks.

Lastly, it is important to show gratitude for your serenity garden each day, even if you don’t dwell in its space as often as you would like. NATURISM Social Nudism Strips Away External Trappings

by Ronna E. Krozy and Nancy Greenhouse

W

hat if being beautiful meant taking off all the conventional trappings? What if perfect clothing (and hair and makeup and jewelry) really didn’t matter at all? A growing segment of society is coming to embrace a way of life that strips away the external—and feeling better about themselves and how they look. Society’s “normal” standards of beauty have well-known damaging effects on both male and female self-esteem. Dieting fads, steroid use, cosmetic surgeries and other unhealthy activities are aimed at our sense of inadequacy as well as our wallets. Take a look at the media’s portrayal of beauty (even “natural” beauty), and you see an almost exclusive focus on what’s on the outside. We’re supposed to aim for a certain skin type (fair and smooth), shape (slim but well-proportioned), hair (long and lustrous). But this picture leaves most of us out and only stokes our self-destructive feelings that we don’t measure up. The new face of natural beauty celebrates a world of different people—their shapes, sizes, colors and physical conditions. It recognizes that beauty is not in the eye of the beholder, but, truly, comes from within. This reality has been recognized for decades by millions of people who practice social nudism (also known as naturism). They know beyond a doubt that you can actually feel more beautiful when you simply bare your body and accept it as it is. At Solair Recreation League, a family-friendly nudist resort in Woodstock, Connecticut, many first-time visitors surprise themselves. After shedding their clothing, sometimes with great hesitation, they quickly realize that no one is judging them. “I suddenly found that I could stop criticizing myself—and that I could feel confident and even, dare I say, beautiful,” said one. Imagine the relief of learning firsthand that being naturally beautiful means owning and accepting the body and features that are yours, without alteration or adornment. Natural beauty is further enhanced by being around others who share and support your beliefs. An article in the Journal of Happiness Studies states, “Individuals do experience increases in 42

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

www.namiami.com

positive body-image, self-esteem and life satisfaction after participating in real naturist activities.” Further research shows that our social networks have a profound effect on our behaviors and attitudes, including how we perceive our appearance. “Spend time around people who are confident in their bodies, and you’ll find yourself following suit,” says Nancy Etcoff, PhD, Director of the Aesthetics and Well Being Program at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital. With natural beauty, less is more—including less clothing! Now, how about a more holistic view of natural beauty? One that cares more about our internal makeup than our external, and shows the same compassion for ourselves that we do for others. Let’s work on separating what we’re worth from how we look. When you let your authentic beauty shine through, having stripped away what’s not necessary (clothing) and destructive attitudes, you’re headed in the right direction. So, how else can you feel more organically beautiful? Consider these examples, and you’ll think of many more. Cherish your scars. “If you have a scar, you can decide to see it as a flaw or simply as a memory of an injury,” says Stacey TantleffDunn, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Florida. Don’t judge, but rather appreciate your scars as triumphs over adversity. Stand tall. When you pay attention to your posture, you create space for your lungs and other organs to function well. Good posture (as well as smiling) promotes a sense of authentic beauty and good health that radiates out to the people around you. Stop trying harder. Be your own image-maker. Seeing yourself as naturally beautiful means letting go of striving, yearning and plotting to be different than you are. In fact, working to make yourself look “better” through clothing, cosmetic surgery and makeup is both costly and counterproductive. Celebrate your body. It’s the only one you have, and no matter your age, size or condition, it’s doing its best for you. It is part of your humanity, flaws and all. Visit a nudist resort. The very best way to appreciate the many psychological, physical and social benefits of social nudism is to try it. Make sure the nudist resort you choose is affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). AANRaffiliated clubs, such as Solair Recreation League (SolairRL.com), must maintain stringent, family-appropriate standards of conduct for all members and visitors. Ronna E. Krozy, EdD, RN, is a retired professor of nursing and a Trustee of the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). Nancy Greenhouse has created development programs for numerous Boston-area nonprofit organizations. Both are long-time members of AANR as well as Solair Recreation League in Woodstock, CT. What can we do?

Mind Control How Mindfulness Helps Prevent Disease By Michael Rosenbaum

W

e were all led to believe that the body is pre-programmed by our genes, and those genes always respond in the same way. We have been told that if we are unlucky, we may have genes are more inclined to manifest certain diseases like heart disease or cancer. It is true we all have different genes but they don’t seem to behave the way we were all taught. In the last 20 years, researchers have discovered and proven that genes can express themselves in many different ways (over 2,000 ways according to biologist Bruce Lipton in his book, The Biology of Belief). This means they can express themselves in ways that make us more likely to get sick or less likely. For example, Lipton cites in The Biology of Belief an experiment with rats that were given high doses of cholesterol. Cholesterol has long been thought to be a primary cause of heart disease. Researchers gave one group of rats a chemical to relax them and the other group a chemical to stress their system. The group given the stress chemical developed heart problems and died but the group that 44

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

was unstressed didn’t develop any heart problems. Apparently, it was the stress hormones that signaled the genes to take the cholesterol and form the plaque which caused the heart disease; the problem was not necessarily the cholesterol itself. What causes stress? Certainly, toxic physical environments caused by pollutants in the air, and unhealthy ingredients in our food create stresses in the body. But the biggest and most insidious cause of stress is our mind. Our beliefs, emotions and negative thinking all contribute to create a toxic environment in our mind. This translates to stress, and, as a result, produces chemicals in the body that create a toxic environment in our cells. These toxic chemicals signal the genes to express themselves in ways that lead to the body breaking down. Over time, disease takes hold. The body is built to be very resilient and compensates for things like unhealthy diets and even toxins in the environment. However, the constant stress of negative thinking and negative emotions will invariably break the body down.

www.namiami.com

Following are suggestions that have been proven by scientific studies to help shift the momentum back in our favor. • Meditation: It has been shown that just 15-20 minutes of meditation, three times a week, has a significant effect on our stress level and creates greater health in the body. Any kind of meditation will work. Consistency is the key. • Gratitude: Writing down 3-5 specific things we are grateful for at the end of day begins to shift the mind set from “glass half empty” to “glass half full.” Over time, this becomes a permanent, positive default for our mind. • Change deep-seated beliefs: Beliefs are stored in the subconscious and unconscious mind. There are many new therapies out there that are quick and efficient in allowing the inner mind to permanently change its negative and limiting beliefs. The latter leads to emotional upsets and faulty thinking. Some of them are regression therapy, hypnosis, TAT, EFT, EMDR and more. Many of these modalities, once learned, can be easily done at home. • Change your environment: We often have a choice who we hang out with, what programs and movies to watch, what books we read, what classes we take, what work places we put ourselves into. Choose options that promote a more positive mindset and loving support. Start making small changes every month using some of the ideas above. Take a 30day challenge to make a 5 percent change and then another 5 percent change the next month. In the process, you have created permanent new positive habits that support sustained better health. The Ugly Truth

Carcinogens in Cosmetics by Marlaina Donato

C

osmetics are defined by their intended use in the U.S., via the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as “articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance.” Regrettably, researchers in the U.S. have identified over 10,000 industrial chemicals in cosmetics, some of which are classified carcinogens. Since the FDA does not have the authority to test cosmetics before they are released to the market, these harmful chemical ingredients have crept their way into our cosmetics. According to the American Cancer Society, carcinogens are “substances and exposures that can lead to cancer.” Carcinogens are classified into the following groups: Group 1 carcinogenic to humans; Group 2A probably carcinogenic to humans; Group 2B possibly carcinogenic to humans; Group 3 not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans; Group 4 probably not carcinogenic to humans. A review published in the World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research revealed the ingredients commonly found in cosmetics

of major concern: phthalates (Group 2B and Group 3), hydroquinone (Group 3), formaldehyde (Group 1), lead (Group 2B), ethanolamine (Group 2B and Group 3) and coal tar (Group 1). Phthalates are used as plasticizers, which increase the flexibility, transparency, durability and longevity of plastics, and in solvents, or dissolving agents for other materials. These phthalic acid salts may be an ingredient in various soaps, shampoos, hairsprays and nail polishes. Hydroquinone is a type of phenol, a toxic organic compound, which is used in the cosmetic industry in various skincare products to lighten skin color. These phenols are common ingredients in facial cleansers/moisturizers and hair conditioners. Formaldehyde is used commercially to produce biocides, preservatives and basic chemicals for the manufacturing of countless goods including soaps, shampoos, hair gels, eyelash glue, nail products and baby cleansing products. Lead is a naturally occurring element found in all parts of our environment that can be toxic to humans upon exposure, resulting in negative health effects. This heavy metal is commonly found in

lipsticks, nail polishes, foundations and eye shadows. Ethanolamine is used to form emulsions of water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients and control the pH of various cosmetic products. These products include eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow, blush, foundation, fragrances, shampoo, hair dyes, hair treatments, sunscreen and skin cleansing products. Coal tar is a black, thick liquid mixture derived from burning coal. The function of this coal byproduct is as a cosmetic biocide and denaturant and is a common ingredient in shampoos, hair conditioners, hair dyes, soaps and body lotions. In addition to carcinogenic properties, many of the chemicals commonly used in

Better Immune System Modulation Broad-spectrum Support is Not Enough by Marigot Vreeland

M

odulating the immune system is the new frontier of natural healthcare. The immune system is an intelligent and complicated system that uses inflammation to “talk” to us and destroy pathogens. Commonly, the immune system is thought of as a singular process: a too weak or too strong immune system that needs to either be enhanced or mitigated. However, the newest research delves into how to control the specific maturation process for different divisions of the immune system. Gone are the days of blanket “immune-boosting” supplements and green drinks. Now it is time for us to realize what nutritional compound, lifestyle factor and food steers which inflammatory process, and how to control the immune system on a more precise basis. The immune system is a complex mix of cells with different roles. Inflammation, a trendy buzzword, is an amalgam 46

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

of chemical processes all managed by the immune system. Inflammation can be good when it repairs tissue and keeps away dangerous intruders. But when the balance of the immune system goes unchecked, the chronic, low-grade, persistent inflammation incites degenerative diseases. The job of the immune system is to keep the body healthy and to fight foreign invaders; it has evolved different ways to do so. When exposed to a new bacterial, viral, parasitic, spirochete or other pathogen or intruder, these cells read and then destroy the new enemy. For the purpose of this article, we will discuss the intricacies and differences of Th1 and Th2 immunity, and how, if these two systems are left unopposed, serious complications can arise. To simplify, Th1 cells fight and destroy small bugs. They are constantly surveying the body to destroy them. Th1 cells are activated through the presence of bacteria and

www.namiami.com

viruses inside other cells. Th1 cells alert other cells to phagocytize, or to completely engulf and eat, cells infected with bacteria and viruses. Th1 cells also secrete the tumor necrosis factor (TNF), making Th1 immunity particularly helpful in fighting not only infections, but also cancers. Th2 cells help to tag and fight bigger things outside of the cells, such as parasites. They can aid in the mediation of tissue repair and conduct the antibody system. Antibodies are a way in which the immune system marks to destroy a specific antigen or intruder. The antibody fits like a key into a lock when it finds its specific protein or antigen; in this way it marks the antigen to be destroyed. This process can manifest as a classic anaphylactic response or as a chronically inflamed individual that is sensitive or “allergic” to everything they encounter. Unfortunately, antibodies can be formed to any antigen that the body deems as foreign. Antibodies can be helpful if formed against an antigen like the measles virus. But they can also cause chronic inflammation if formed against things like food or environmental toxins. This chronic inflammation will lead to autoimmunity if formed against self-tissue. System Out of Balance The optimal state is one in which our bodies are able to move freely between a Th1 environment and a Th2 environment since both are necessary to fight infections in different ways. However, when one system becomes excessively or chronically activated, it inhibits the other. That’s when the body can spiral into a constant Th1-dominant or Th2-dominant environment. When one system gets locked into dominance, it can escalate into more serious health concerns. Then the antibodyantigen system can actually be used against the body that produced it. A Th2-dominant patient displays chronic allergies, asthma, always seems to be coming down with a cold, and easily develops new food sensitivities. This Th2 dominance puts the antibody system on overdrive. Since that immune system is set at hypersensitive mode, everything that comes into the body is seen as a foreign invader, whether it is food, environmental irritants or allergens.

As these triggers enter the body during Th2 dominance, the immune system is primed to make antibodies, causing chronic lowgrade inflammation. This inflammatory cytokine-rich environment can influence the immune system to start attacking its own body tissue, resulting in an autoimmune disorder. At this point, an elimination diet or removal of the environmental triggers will not help to quell the inflammatory storm. Bolstering the immune system as a whole won’t be sufficient anymore at that stage. Food choices, lifestyle, herbs, botanicals, vitamins, smoothies and even probiotics all have specific influences on the development and maintenance of the Th1/Th2 immune system. But it is no longer enough to say that the immune system is compromised, and it needs aid. It is imperative to look deeper and find where the system is going awry and what specifically will inhibit or enhance either a

Th1 or Th2 dominance or deficiency. For example, perhaps it is necessary to focus on regulating an individual’s Th2 system and the associated inflammatory cytokines. The key is to modulate the immune system. We all should have a flexible immune system to be able to move from a Th1 to a Th2 response to match whatever fight is ahead but everyone has genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that push toward a Th1 or Th2 dominance. However, if one becomes too strong and actively inhibits the other, the full use of the immune system is paralyzed. The person who never gets sick typically has a strong Th1 system that fights bacteria and viruses inside the cell. But an overactive Th1 system often leads to an underactive Th2 system. Without the proper use of the Th2 system’s parasite destruction, tissue repair and the utilization of the antibodyantigen system will be hindered. An overactive Th2 system can lead to asthma,

allergies, a hypersensitivity to foods, constant cold or flu diagnoses and subsequent overuse of antibiotics, and perhaps even the development of an autoimmune-prone environment. Inflammation in and of itself is a neutral process. The body is constantly under siege from foreign invaders. We need the immune system and some inflammation to keep the host alive. Ideally, pathogens are efficiently destroyed, and inflammation is effectively resolved after each battle. Chronic, unresolved inflammation is the hallmark of many diseases and one answer is restoring harmony to the Th1 and Th2 systems.

Farm-to-Table Marine Delivery

Harbor Harvest Vessel Vision for Coastal Cities by Ariana Fine

R

obert Kunkel, co-owner of the Harbor Harvest market in Norwalk as well as a ship design and construction management firm, debuted in April what had once been only an idea for more efficient food transportation to connect family farms with town markets. The Captain Ben Moore, his unique, hybrid electric catamaran with refrigeration compartments, launched April 12 in Mamaroneck, New York. The vessel is the next step of Kunkel’s dream for a marine-focused, farm-to-table distribution network along the area’s coastal waterways. The $2.8 million ship is a collaborative effort between Kunkel’s Alternative Marine Technologies and Derecktor Shipyards that began in 2016. However, Kunkel had been contemplating the idea for many years prior to that. “With Harbor Harvest [market], we wanted to create a food hub to see what local products were needed and desired. We saw issues immediately with in-demand items. Customers on the Connecticut side want fresh meat from Long Island, while getting Long Island’s amazing potatoes and

48

Miami-Dade/Florida Keys

wine to Connecticut was an issue. What would be a two-hour delivery from port to port can take more than half a day on the highways,” Kunkel said in 2016 before developing the vessel. Two of the coastal shipping issues he originally hypothesized about were tackled in the catamaran’s streamlined design: coastal property owners’ reluctance to see less aesthetically pleasing shipping vessels and the accompanying noise and emissions from such a ship. The Norwalk native and marine engineer hopes the 65-foot cargo vessel will

also play a small part in reducing carbon emissions by decreasing local fresh-food distribution traffic on congested highways between Connecticut and New York. Powered by lithium batteries and operated by a two-member crew, the emission-free ship takes about 45 minutes to travel from Huntington, Long Island to Norwalk. During the product loading and unloading process, the ship’s batteries are recharged at pier-side power units near Harbor Harvest’s warehouses. Both locations serve dual purposes as storage for resale goods and product distribution pick-up points. The Harbor Harvest ship is Derecktor Shipyards’ third hybrid catamaran creation, built to run on the BAE HybriDrive system. Reaching speeds up to 16 knots, the vessel includes 300 square feet of open cargo space, 100 square feet of covered cargo space and 140 square feet of walk-in refrigerated space. The aluminum ship is capable of transporting 12,000 pounds of cargo, up to five times the freight that an 18-wheel tractor trailer can. In addition, the vessel does not have to deal with the time-consuming delivery journey spent on the I-95 corridor, which can take from over 90 minutes to many hours depending on traffic. For upstate New York farms, transporting goods to Long Island or New York City can sometimes take nearly half a day. The Harbor Harvest vessel will transport dairy, fresh produce, butchered meats and fish products coming from New England and New York small businesses and family farms along waterways to Norwalk for sale in the Harbor Harvest market. There will even be Long Island craft beer and wine brought to Connecticut. Some of the companies and growers that have signed on include Farmer’s Cow, Fossil Farms, Brewport and others. with shipping businesses that want to avoid the hassle of sending trucks on the Connecticut-Long Island highway journey. Instead, the distribution companies will get goods from the drop-off points on either side after they have crossed Long Island Sound. The Harbor Harvest (HarborHarvest. com) store, co-owned by Robert Kunkel and his wife Marilyn Kunkel, strives to be farm-to-market, locally sourcing foods as much as possible. With a butcher and produce section reminiscent of mom-andpop markets of yesteryear, Harbor Harvest sources fresh produce, dairy and meats from farms and vendors throughout Connecticut and New York. This both supports local farmers and increases the freshness of the products available, in addition to cutting down on the environmental impact of long-distance delivery of goods. Kunkel is passionate about the concept of disruptive sustainability and how the boatbuilding and local Harbor Harvest delivery service can contribute to combating the environmental side of global warming and emissions. “We see the damage done when food is not sourced locally with emissions, traffic, noise and gas usage. We are doing our little part,” says Kunkel. “We are aiming to move traffic from main highways by using waterways responsibly on Long Island Sound and the Hudson River.” Kunkel’s vision for efficient, local marine shipping is catching on. The U.S. Maritime Administration has already committed $1.8 million in funding for a second marine vessel and loading equipment as part of its Marine Highway initiative. According to Kunkel, the second vessel may ferry products to Hunts Point or Garvies Point in Glen Cove, New York. Officials from other coastal cities, such as San Francisco and Boston, have reached out to Kunkel about ideas to create and build their own similar marine transportation networks. Benefits of Baby Massage by Rebekah and David Frome

B

efore infants have language, they have touch. Within the supportive fluid filled interior of the amniotic sac the growing fetus begins tao experience her world through the sense of touch. During the eighth week of pregnancy touch begins as the first sense to develop. By the eleventh week the baby is using her mouth, hands and feet to explore herself and her surroundings. The sensation of the amniotic fluid and uterine wall provides stimuli for the development of the baby’s nervous system. By thirty-two weeks gestation, nearly every part of the baby’s body can feel heat, cold, pressure, and pain. At birth, the sense of touch is the most finely tuned of all the senses. The experience of touch reaches a crescendo for the unborn baby as she is pushed and squeezed through the birth canal. Once delivered her Mom’s warm skin will soothe and soften her adjustment to the outside world. Skin to skin contact with Mom will help to regulate her heart and respiratory rate, keep her warm and start mom’s hormonal process for breastfeeding. The newborn’s ability to thrive is dependent upon the comfort that her caregivers can offer her outside of the womb. The sense of touch established in early life plays a critical role in fostering the baby’s growth and development.

Massage

Baby massage is an ancient tradition that has been practiced in India and Asia for the past 3000 years. In many cultures’ babies are massaged daily with different regional oils 50

and ash. It is increasingly being recognized for its emotional, physical and social benefits in the western world. The Touch Research Institute at the University School of Medicine, Florida has conducted evidencebased studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of massage therapy in enhancing the healthy growth and development of infants.

Class

Touch is a vital source of support for infants and as necessary as food and water. An infant’s massage class offer guidelines for using 5 easy to learn massage strokes, demonstrations of infant massage by a skilled professional, the opportunity to practice the massage strokes, an opportunity to share and socialize with other new parents and so much more. The class will help you learn how to modulate pressure, speed and direction of a stroke, learn how to read the baby’s body language, and earn how to gauge the length of the massage and perform a full body treatment for the baby.

Benefits

Massage has a multitude of benefits which help soothe colic and calm an upset stomach, relieve constipation, reduce reflux, relieve the pain of teething, promote relaxation for both the baby and the mom, empower both the baby and the caregiver, and cultivate the bond between parent and child. Babies who receive regular massage experience enhanced motor development and a reduction of cortisol. It is especially

Stuttering is charmaintaining factor. These facts are of great prognostic imporacterized by it’s core features, which are repetitions of sounds and tance. Speech pathologists have all heard parents say “I thought syllables and prolongations of sounds. We all have some of these 52

he would just grow out of it.” Not so at all when it is a male, with a history of stuttering somewhere in the family, who has a hectic lifestyle, with high standards of achievement, a sensitive temperament, and lots of competition to communicate at home. Indeed, just a few of these factors can prevent spontaneous recovery.

Consequences

While most speech problems tend to improve over time, stuttering is unique in that it tends to worsen very quickly, here’s how. Stuttering is at least a two-dimensional problem. It is both the behavior of stuttering itself (the prolongations and repetitions discussed earlier), and a psycho-emotional dimension. Society tends to penalize those who stutter, which creates fear of speaking and anxiety while speaking. These emotions almost always precipitate the stuttering behavior. We have all experienced such emotions (often referred to as stage fright) when speaking for the first time to a large audience. Such fear and anxiety will break down fluency in both normally fluent speakers, as well as those who stutter. Because of the penalty associated with stuttering, the natural reaction is to try to hide the stuttering. This may involve substituting easy words for feared words while speaking, or completely altering what one was about to say, and at a more extreme level simple refusing to speak. We must ask ourselves, if we were having a spasm somewhere in our bodies would we want others to see it, or to hear it happening to us? We would seek to hide it as well! As time advances, the psych-emotional dimension of fear, anxiety, and avoidance behaviors develop, and stuttering becomes more severe and pervasive in the person’s life. Importantly, stuttering, fear, anxiety, and avoidance behaviors become associated with specific people, speaking situations, and the physical environment in a classical conditioning paradigm. This happens in much the same way as when we hear a song from the past and conjure up memories of where we were, who we were with, and what was happening in our lives at that time. The spread of stuttering across people, situations, and physical environments accounts for the worsening of this problem over time. The individual who stutters often feels as though they are seized by stuttering in the moment of trying to speak. They feel

as though this is something that happens to them, not something that they do as a result of the way they are trying to speak. From their perspective, there seems to be no explanation for it! What makes it even more difficult to live with, is the inconsistency of the disorder. One can be fluent on a given day or in a particular situation, and extremely dysfluent the very next day in that same situation. What a complex and insidious problem stuttering is!

Treatment

As with most problems, early detection and treatment are or paramount importance. In order for treatment to be effective, both the behavior of stuttering as well as the psych-

emotional dimension of stuttering, must be diagnosed and treated in therapy. If you or a loved one are caught in the throes of stuttering, seek out a competent and caring professional who can provide the necessary program for remediation. Dr. Albert Oratio is the director, founder and principal Speech-Language Pathologist at Monmouth Center for Communication Disorders in Red Bank, N.J.
