ThefirechangedVillaseñor’slife.“I wasveryupset,andIwantedtounderstand whythesefireswerehappening,”shesays. “Istartedtoresearchclimatechangeand wildfires,andbegantoseethescientific connectionbetweenthetwo.” Awakenedbypersonalconcernsand ignitedbyemergingrolemodels,activistsofallagesarelearninghowtobecome effectiveclimatewarriors.WatchingGreta ThunbergspeaksoonaftertheCalifornia disastertoworldleadersatCOP24,the UnitedNationsClimateChangeConferenceinPoland,empoweredVillaseñor totaketothestreetsandprotest.“Greta gavepermissiontostudentsallaroundthe worldtomaketheirvoices heard,”shesaysoftheSwedishteenagerwhoseschool strikeinitiative—Fridays forFuture—hasbecomea worldwidephenomenon. OnDecember14,2018,Villaseñor beganherownFridayvigilsoutsidethe U.N.—sometimesalone,othertimeswith friendsshe’sinspiredtotakeaction;shealso helpedorganizethe2019GlobalClimate StrikeinNewYorkCity,attendedbymore than300,000people,andfoundedEarth Uprising,anonprofitglobalyouthmovement.She’soneof16youngsters,alongwith Thunberg,thatfiledalegalcomplaintwith theU.N.demandingthatFrance,Germany, Brazil,ArgentinaandTurkeycurbtheir carbonemissions. “Therearesomanywaysthatyoung peoplecangetinvolved,”saysVillaseñor. “Theycangivepresentationsaboutclimate changeintheirclassesandcommunities.
