Are You a Thyroid Sufferer?

LEARN ABOUT THE 4 MOST COMMON THYROID PATTERNS OFTEN OVERLOOKED THAT ARE CRUCIAL TO YOUR HEALTH ARE YOU EXPERIENCING THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS? • Unusual weight gain or hair loss • Muscles and joints that ache all the time • Constant fatigue and lack of energy • Trouble getting a decent night’s sleep • Feeling emotionally drained and unstable • Constipation and having trouble losing weight • Difficulty with concentration and memory • Cold hands and feet • Sluggish metabolism

SOME 20 MILLION AMERICANS ARE THYROID SUFFERERS

The incidence of the disorder affects women in particular with 1 in 8 experiencing the disorder in their lifetime.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOUR LAB TESTS SHOW NORMAL BUT YOU STILL HAVE THYROID SYMPTOMS?

Why is it that your thyroid test may at times come back normal when you’re still confounded with anxiety and feeling dreadful? In all probability, the reason could be that you may have some type of functional thyroid problem that is being overlooked.

WHY DO 90% OF WOMEN ON THYROID MEDICATIONS CONTINUE TO SUFFER?

Many doctors will look at 2 thyroid patterns: Hyper (Fast) and Hypo (Slow) thyroid. However, the latest research in functional medicine has revealed that there are actually 6 thyroid patterns and over 27 things that can go wrong which can affect the thyroid gland. This can all be revealed in a comprehensive blood test that tests all the necessary markers for thyroid. When you have been treated in the past: • You may have been given an inordinate amount of hormones and prescription drugs. • You may not have been evaluated holistically to take your overall health into consideration. • Steps may not have been taken to balance your immune system. By being prescribed and taking hormones, the hormones may have made the lab tests look good, but left you still in pain and overwhelmed. Your treatment may have concentrated on the two thyroid patterns of Hypo and Hyper, overlooking the other 4 patterns including autoimmune Hashimoto’s, under conversion (low T3), over conversion (High T3) and Thyroid Resistance.

WE CAN BE OF GOOD HELP TO YOU IF YOUR TEST REVEALS THAT YOU FALL WITHIN ANY OF ONE OF THE FOUR OVERLOOKED THYROID PATTERNS.

An effective treatment may not relate directly to the thyroid, but instead could focus on your immune system, digestive tract, adrenal hormones, other toxicity issues and other possible causative factors.

DO YOU HAVE THE CONDITION KNOWN AS HASHIMOTO’S?

This is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States, and it’s an immune rather than a hormonal issue. It is where your body’s immune system attacks your thyroid.

THE ANSWER LIES IN BALANCING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Although your medications may balance your TSH, they don’t really do much to alleviate your symptoms of Hashimoto’s. It is only through balancing the immune system where success can happen. In our clinic, we utilize drug free neurological and metabolic treatment protocols to balance the immune system and restore overall function.

MY HOLISTIC APPROACH WORKS BEST WITH COMPLEX DISORDERS LIKE THYROID, FIBROMYALGIA, IBS AND CHRONIC FATIGUE

In my clinic, I look to address the root causes of a thyroid disorder and help restore the thyroid naturally using customized dietary nutrition and natural supplements. I also look at the patient neurologically to make sure that the brain, immune system, and hormonal system are working properly.

THIS IS A DRUG FREE APPROACH

My approach avoids the unwanted side effects of pharmaceuticals in restoring proper hormonal function.

aren L. Seymour, an integrative licensed clinical social worker, is launching a nutritional component to the wellness program that she offers. She says the program is particularly beneficial for health and wellness professionals such as nutritionists, yoga instructors, life and wellness coaches, occupational and physical therapists, massage therapists, chiropractors and veterinarians. Karen Seymour Seymour has also become a representative for the Kannaway CBD supplement and personal care line. The products are geared toward self-care and nutrition, she says. She will host a presentation by Damian Callais, co-founder of the Cajun Navy Relief and Kannaway’s lead advisory board member and CBD educator, on October 22, at 6:30 p.m., in Fort Walton Beach. “Kannaway products are stringently lab tested for purity Damian Callais and potency,” Seymour says. “They are extensively researched and adhere to federal regulations and guidelines, although some states may vary on their restrictions on hemp-derived CBD products. We offer a pure line for individuals who must avoid even trace amounts of THC, such as workers in the public service sector, school systems and military.” She calls the results she’s seen firsthand “very impactful and, as the research proves, extremely promising for individuals and animals who would benefit from an overall state of balance or homeostasis.” Seymour says anyone can benefit from feeding their endocannabinoid system with high-quality cannabidiol, especially people looking for an impactful supplement to their health and wellness regimen. Protect Our Coast Kickoff Meeting The inaugural meeting of Protect Our

Coast, a grassroots campaign to ban offshore drilling and exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, was held last month at the Pensacola Downtown Public Library. The group is asking concerned citizens to vote “yes” in November for Amendment 9, a ballot measure proposing such a ban. “This meeting was the place to be if you care at all about preventing oil rigs from encroaching on the Emerald Coast,” says Frankie Hawkins, a field organizer for Oceana, a conservation and advocacy organization. “With just a few short months until the release of the federal government's offshore oil and gas drilling plan, we need to act now.”

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, have found that receiving music therapy can significantly lessen a patient’s need for opioids and other painkillers after invasive surgery. The researchers tested 161 patients; 49 in the music group and 112 in a control group. After their surgery, both groups were offered painkillers intravenously at doses requested by the patient. Of those engaged in music therapy, 86 percent avoided the painkillers, compared to only 26 percent of the control group.

Knitting Releases the Blues Knitting can alleviate the blues, slow the onset of dementia and distract from chronic pain, according to a survey published in The British Journal of Occupational Therapy. Eighty-one percent of respondents described feeling happier after a session of needlework. In another study, researchers at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital found that the act of knitting lowers heart rates by an average of 11 beats per minute, eliciting a state of relaxation similar to that of yoga. A Mayo Clinic study found that crafts like knitting and crocheting also reduce the chance of developing mild cognitive impairment by 28 percent. In a University of British Columbia study, 74 percent of 38 women with the eating disorder anorexia reported that it lessened the intensity of their fears and thoughts and cleared their minds of eating disorder preoccupations. In a survey of 1,000 members of the British group Knit for Peace, one in five respondents reported that knitting reduced their arthritic pain.

Music Lessons Make Kids Smarter Structured music lessons significantly enhance children’s cognitive abilities, including language-based reasoning, short-term memory and planning, while reducing inhibition, leading to improved academic performance, report researchers from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In the study, 147 Dutch 6-year-olds were divided into music, visual arts and control groups, and monitored for two-and-a-half years. The children in the music group sang, listened to music and played an instrument of their choice one to two hours a week during regular classroom time. Compared to the control group, they demonstrated improved verbal IQ and reasoning skills, and a greater ability to plan, organize and complete tasks, as well as improved academic achievement. Children given structured visual arts lessons showed improvements in visual and spatial memory compared to the control group.

Creating Food from Carbon Dioxide

By 2050, the world’s population is estimated to hit 10 billion, and food production will need to increase by 70 percent. Traditional farming won’t be able to keep up. Lisa Dyson, who holds three degrees in physics, including a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Boston, knows the reason: ubiquitous carbon dioxide. This byproduct of burning fossil fuels is a known culprit in the pace of climate change. Dyson is revolutionizing the way protein is made. Several years ago, she and colleague John Reed came across NASA reports from the 1960s and ’70s that discussed using microbes to recycle carbon dioxide aboard spacecraft. “We were fascinated by their research. We wondered if we could develop a similar technology that would enable us to recycle carbon dioxide into valuable products here on Earth,” Dyson says. Their startup, Kiverdi, uses microbes to transform carbon into bio-based products in special bio-reactors similar to the giant urns used to brew beer. This year, they’re commercializing a new process to transform CO2 into protein powder. The end product, Planet+Protein, is packed with essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals. 14

Ivory Outlawed

UK Banning Both Legal and Illegal Trade

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is in the process of implementing a neartotal ivory ban. It can’t happen soon enough because elephant populations continue to dramatically decline. As recognized by the parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species last September, “Countries with domestic ivory markets that contribute to elephant poaching or the illegal ivory trade should take all necessary legislative, regulatory and enforcement measures to close such markets as a matter of urgency.” Any legal ivory market leads to a parallel illegal market because ivory from recently killed elephants can be made to look like old ivory, which is legal in many countries, through processes like chipping, staining and cracking. The UK has long played a role in the international ivory trade. During the colonial era, more than a million elephants were killed to feed British demand for everything from ivory ornaments and piano keys to billiard balls and cutlery. Much of that material remains in the UK today, fueling the market. Trade data indicates that the UK is still the world’s largest exporter of legal ivory, most of which goes to Asian destinations like China and Hong Kong.

Serious concerns have surfaced about food transparency, and people are asking questions. Documentaries like Rotten urge consumers to think twice about the origins and ingredients of their food, but answers are not always readily available. In addition to environmental concerns like long-distance transportation, people are worried about food recalls and safety. FoodLogiQ’s software solution creates “farm to fork traceability”, welcoming companies across the industry to participate, with approximately 7,000 having registered so far in some 100 countries—including Whole Foods, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Carl’s Jr., Subway, Buffalo Wild Wings and the Panda Restaurant Group. Information provides useful details such as where the food was harvested, whether pesticides were used, where the food traveled and how it was processed. FoodLogiQ Chief Marketing Officer Katy Jones suggests this is an important moment of change in the food industry, saying, “Food companies are embracing global standards to increase efficiencies and build a foundation for traceability and supply chain visibility.”

The United Nations described the transformation as the world’s largest beach cleanup project ever, and the work has been rewarded with serious environmental progress. For the first time in 20 years, Olive Ridley sea turtles have hatched at Versova. The turtle is currently classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature because of environmental pollution. They’re the smallest and most common sea turtle, but all species are threatened by human encroachment and pollution. Lawyer and conservationist Afroz Shah says, “I had tears in my eyes when I saw them walking towards the ocean.” Local ecologists say it’s possible the Olive Ridley turtles have been nesting on the beach without anyone noticing, but capturing this momentous occasion is a huge boon to the volunteers, which have encountered some resistance via harassment and bureaucracy.

Last Straw

Groups Work to Make U.S. Go Strawless

About 500 million plastic straws are discarded daily in America, reports the U.S. National Park Service. Plastic that reaches waterways is ingested by marine life and our food chain. Individuals and municipalities are taking action to support options, including going strawless.

EcoCycle, Inc. (EcoCycle.org) and the Inland Ocean Coalition, both in Boulder, Colorado, are asking restaurants citywide not to use them. In July, Starbucks announced plans to eliminate straw use globally by 2020. n StrawlessOcean.org offers straw alternatives made of paper by Aardvark, steel and silicone by Klean Kanteen, metal by Steelys Drinkware and bamboo by StrawFree. n EcoWatch.com suggests, “Unlike metal or glass, soft and bendable silicone straws don’t clink your teeth, making them ideal for kids and straw-biters” and that such products made by Softy Straws work with hot drinks and withstand dishwashers. It also recommends wheat stems, corn bioplastic and bucatini pasta, a spaghetti-like noodle with a hole in the middle.

Vote Yes for Referendum to Save Pensacola Beach from Privatization

On June 21, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners adopted a policy prohibiting any privatization through the sale or lease of currently unleased properties, especially conservation and preservation properties on Santa Rosa Island. Santa Rosa Island (Pensacola Beach at west end, Navarre Beach at east end and all land in between) was given to the citizens of Escambia County by a deed executed by the federal government in January 1947. The county reaffirmed the congressional restrictions in that deed. Now the Nonbinding Referendum on Escambia County Policy for Preservation of Santa Rosa Island is on the ballot. In November, voters can support the county policy and deed restrictions by voting yes on the referendum to preserve Santa Rosa Island (otherwise known as Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach). The referendum will be the last item on the ballot. Unlike Destin and other overdeveloped coastal beaches, Pensacola and Navarre Beaches were never intended to be sold or given away. Congress meant for it to be held in perpetuity for the best interest of the public. Last year Congressman Matt Gaetz introduced a bill that would have stolen Pensacola’s beaches from the public, its rightful owners. Senator Bill Nelson pulled his name off the bill, killing the legislation and saving our public beaches.

NOVEMBER

How Voting Can Help

The referendum on the November ballot dictates that no more unleased property on Santa Rosa Island will be sold or leased, and that conservation and preservation properties on Santa Rosa Island will continue to be protected. The two Congressional restrictions in the original 1947 deed were that none of the land on Santa Rosa Island could be sold, conveyed or given away, and that all uses of the land on Santa Rosa Island should be in the public interest. The Save Pensacola Beach group, which has fought for more than two years to get a referendum on the ballot to keep the island publicly owned, recommends a “bottoms-up vote”: When you get your ballot in November, go to the bottom of the ballot and vote yes on the Preservation of Santa Rosa Island Referendum. Besides voting for the referendum, there are other ways voters can protect our public beaches on Election Day. Congressman Gaetz is also on the ballot, and he has vowed to reintroduce his beach-theft bill if reelected. It’s critical that anyone who wants to keep our public beaches public vote for his opponent, Dr. Jennifer Zimmerman, who supports our position. It’s also important to re-elect Senator Nelson so that he can continue to help protect our beaches. Governor Rick Scott recently signed a bill into law severely limiting the public's access to all beaches in the state of Florida. He didn't have to sign this bill, a fact that has caused a major uproar across the state. But now he is trying to convince us that he's changed his view, just to get our votes. The bottom line: Voting yes for the referendum will not be enough to save our beaches. We must also vote for the candidates who will support the spirit of the referendum. For information about upcoming events, follow Save Pensacola Beach on Facebook.

T

he second annual Wellstock Festival will take place November 3, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village in Destin. This year’s festival has a youth theme, says founder Maurice Hunter. “The intention is to inspire and educate young people about living a lifestyle of wellness and self-love,” he says. “All the proceeds from Wellstock will be donated to South Walton Academy and Westonwood Ranch, which offer services that educate and support young people with special needs, particularly autism.” Hunter says he designed Wellstock to take the popular “wellness festival” 20

concept to the next level. “It’s more than an event—it’s an experience. An experience of inspiration, education and interactivity that supports a lifestyle of total well-being of the mind, body, heart and soul.” The familyfriendly festival is intended to appeal to people of all ages, he says. “Everyone can benefit from good vibes and the joy of a healthy and happy experience, and everyone has room to grow some area of their lives, whether that’s fitness, nutrition, mindset or connection with themselves or others. Wellstock gives guests the opportunity to have hands-on experiences with the essential components for living a well life.”

In addition to traditional wellness festival fare—speakers, local vendors and healthy food and beverages—there will be games, music, interactive art and a “yogathon,” among other activities. Hunter will start the day with a Pure Barre class. The yogathon will feature a full day and range of yoga classes for all ages, including Family and Kids Yoga, Self-Love Flow and Kundalini. “Amazing instructors from Fort Walton Beach to 30A have donated their expertise to guide participants in yoga classes to nourish the body, heart and soul for a great cause,” he says. Participation is by donation, with all proceeds are benefiting South Walton Academy and Westonwood Ranch. Guests can also visit the festival’s Fitness Park to consult with fitness professionals about workout options that fit their current lifestyle and fitness level, and they can join in scheduled workout sessions that will take place throughout the day, such as Martial Arts, Pure Barre, Boxing, Cross Fit and Boot Camp. In the Nutrition Garden, they can learn how to start and maintain an organic home garden; how and where to shop for and prepare organic foods and beverages (smoothies and juices); and how to develop healthier eating practices and incorporate them into their lives. The Art Village, which offers fun and easy interactive art activities, is a popular hangout for adults and kids, Hunter says. “It’s where you can unleash your inner artist and learn how art and creativity lead to enhanced well-being.” Expert speakers will give free presentations on subjects such as fitness, nutrition, creativity and intuition, understanding essential oils, and the benefits of natural juices and smoothies. There will also be a Vendor Marketplace where guests can explore various products and services. “Every feature of our festival is designed to inform and inspire people to improve their health and wellness,” Hunter says. Cost: $8. Location: 4323 Commons Dr. W., Destin, FL. For tickets and vendor/volunteer information, visit WellstockFestival.com.

Barbara Bruni on Pilates for Breast Cancer Patients

E

xercise has numerous benefits to our physical and psychological health, from increasing our strength, flexibility, mood and self-esteem to reducing stress, depression and anxiety. Yet some of the people who could use those benefits the most—women who have or are recovering from breast cancer—most choose exercises that accommodate the fascial restrictions and loss of soft-tissue “glide” caused by radiation and surgery. Originally designed as a rehabilitative tool, Pilates is uniquely safe and effective for breast cancer patients, says Barbara Bruni, owner of Pilates Core Training, in Pensacola. She notes the following reasons:

MEditation Group

Pilates exercises can be done in many positions. The exercises and equipment can be easily modified.

Deep ribcage breathing eases tension, facilitates lymph drainage, stretches tight areas from scarring and adhesions, and centers the focus.

Pilates strengthens the upper and mid-back and low abdominals, speeding recovery from breast cancer surgery.

It helps rebuild proprioception and awareness after nerves and muscles have been cut. It helps patients focus on what they can do versus what they can’t do.

Pilates instructors are trained to address small-movement compensations.

“Three recent studies between 2008 and 2012 have shown that Pilates increased shoulder range of motion, overall strength and flexibility and quality of life, while decreasing pain, fatigue and depression,” Bruni says. Pilates is also an excellent complement to physical therapy, she adds. “Pilates takes over where physical therapy leaves off. Breast cancer survivors can continue to make gains in strength, flexibility and symmetry.” For more information, or to view Eve Gentry and the Power of Pilates, a historical video about a professional dancer who worked with Joseph Pilates after cancer surgery, call Barbara Bruni, Pilates Core Training at 850-287-5836. ost people who decide to visit a chiropractor are seeking treatment for an injury or structural concern. But chiropractors also correct the spinal column to enhance the healing of muscles, organs and the nervous system, and many now offer complementary therapies as well. They believe this integrative approach is the best way to restore good health in their patients. The four practitioners below reflect the diverse chiropractic services available in Northwest Florida. of chemical and environmental toxicities over the last three decades, we are seeing a huge spawning of chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic pain and fatigue, headaches and autoimmune disorders.” The traditional chiropractic focus of spinal manipulation isn’t enough to combat these modern epidemics, he says. “With the nervous system being continually challenged each day by these inflammatory factors that go beyond the mechanical misalignment of the spine, it’s harder for the adjustments to last. They’re just simply not holding like they used to.” To address the root issue of poor health, he says, other factors must be addressed in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments. At Bay Clinic of Chiropractic, he uses laboratory testing to identify which physiological systems (e.g., neurological, immune, endocrine) are affected and how they interrelate. By incorporating complementary techniques such as chiropractic neurology, nutrition and functional medicine, he can restore his patients to good health.

to do that is by keeping them informed about their choices for health care,” she says. “I like to make different options available for my patients.” To that end, Tucei often recommends alternative solutions such as essential oils and CBD oil products, which she believes could help combat the opioid epidemic while providing effective relief for common problems like sleep issues, allergies and anxiety. As a specialist in prenatal care, Tucei offers education on chiropractic care and alternative remedies that can help address the specific health needs of mothers and babies. She says prenatal chiropractic care can relieve sciatic and low-back pain and has been proven to help decrease labor time and pain by around 40 percent, and chiropractic can correct pediatric problems that occur as a result of childbirth. “Labor is a very traumatic time not just for the mom, but also for the baby,” she says. “There is a lot of strain placed on the baby's neck and spine during delivery that can cause complications such as difficulty feeding and digestive issues, chronic ear infections and bed wetting.” She notes that children respond well to chiropractic care, and so she educates parents on the benefits of getting their children seen at a young age.

Positive Chiropractic Solutions, Navarre PositiveChiropractic.com When Dr. Amanda Williams evaluates her patients, she uses her training from the Motion Palpation Institute, which emphasizes restoring proper motion in the spine and joints. “We focus on finding joints that have a mobility problem and work to correct that problem, whether that Dr. Amanda means helping the joint move more with Williams adjustments, or stabilizing a joint that moves too much with exercises,” she says. Williams recently entered a diplomate program in pediatrics through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), which will allow her to cover all areas of family health, from conception to pregnancy to childhood.

“We strive to allow the body the very best ability to adapt to the environment and to the stressors we are subject to every day,” she says. Through the ICPA, Williams received certification in the Webster Technique, which uses analysis and adjustments to reduce pelvic imbalance in pregnant women, ultimately creating safer and easier pregnancies.

theFIX Functional Therapy, Fort Walton Beach TheFIXfwb.com Dr. Sean Price, chiropractor at theFIX Functional Therapy, believes in supporting and restoring whole-body health through functional medicine, which facilitates natural healing. “The team at theFIX takes a threeDr. Sean Price pronged approach,” he says. “We support the body by addressing the patient's nutritional/metabolic status, neurological or brain status, and structural status.” Using laboratory testing, Price incorporates functional medicine and nutrition to correct imbalances in his patients’ metabolism. He also uses neurological and orthopedic evaluations to determine any neurological or brain-based dysfunctions and encourages brain stimulation to facilitate a “reconnect.” He says he established his functional therapy program after noticing how many patients were depending on medication to give them relief from conditions like hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's disease, diabetes, adrenal fatigue and hormone imbalances. “This three-pronged approach has proven very effective in helping patients recover from these chronic conditions and get their lives back,” he says. By offering diverse techniques and treatments, these practitioners are real game changers in the field of chiropractic, which traditionally focused on spinal manipulation. They can create a unique treatment plan to address the specific needs of each patient, whether that is improved mobility, pain relief, natural alternatives to medication, or improved communications between various body systems to facilitate better health.

Treating the Root Cause of Pain

or call 850-687-0826 26

D

r. Tony Salamay started his chiropractic practice in 2008 with the aim of helping people reverse chronic pain and disease by identifying and treating their root cause. In addition to a doctorate in chiropractic medicine, he holds a master's in clinical nutrition and certification in acupuncture, and has several hundred post-graduate hours in functional neurology and functional medicine, which are a major emphasis of his work at Bay Clinic of Chiropractic. “Rather than only treating symptoms, we focus on their cause and restoring proper body function,” he says. “We usually perform a thorough initialworkTony Salamay, DC, MS, FASA up that involves lab testing and imaging to identify where the problem exists. Then we tailor our treatment plan to address the patient’s health problem.” Dr. Salamay’s customized plans typically involve neurological and metabolic treatments to restore physiological function. This may involve advanced chiropractic adjustments, brain-based therapies, whole foods and nutraceutical supplements. “Rather than considering a patient from the viewpoint of a single discipline, such as nutrition, acupuncture or chiropractic, we look at the neuro-immune axis and their connections—the brain and spine, the immune system, hormones—and use advanced testing to restore the communication between these three pillars for complete recovery,” he says. “It’s a scientific and holistic method of aligning the physical body, body chemistry and mind for optimal wellness.” Patients see the value in that holistic approach, he says. “As opposed to the ‘sick care’ model, where you treat symptoms or diseases as they arise, the functional model is restorative and preventative. People enjoy a better quality of life. They don’t just survive, they thrive.” Dr. Salamay is the author of How To End Your Chronic Pain and Start Living Again, a drug-free, nonsurgical approach to beating chronic pain and other health conditions.

r. Cynthia Urmos opened Urmos Chiropractic Health Center in 1994, after having been an associate with Dr. John Gingras in Pensacola for two years. “At that time, there were only two chiropractors from Gulf Breeze to Fort Walton, so I thought Gulf Breeze was a good place to come,” Dr. Urmos says. “I had several patients who lived in the area, and there were no female chiropractors in the area at all.” Besides her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life Chiropractic College, in the Atlanta area, Dr. Urmos is a certified chiropractic sports physician and is proficient in the Activator Method Chiropractic Technique, a Cynthia Urmos, BS DC gentler alternative to manual spinal adjustments. “We perform the more traditional Diversified technique as well as the Activator technique so that we can be diverse in taking care of our patients’ needs,” she says. “My patients recognize that a spine in alignment is the key to a healthy nervous system, which in turn helps them feel better overall.” Along with chiropractic care, Urmos Chiropractic Health Center offers several modes of therapy such as kinetic exercises, mechanical traction, interferential therapy and whole-body vibration. It also offers supplements, custom orthotics and x-rays in house. There are two massage therapists on staff, and the center hosts free spinal health talks the third Tuesday of every month. With her Gulf Breeze practice about to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Dr. Urmos is now treating her second generation of patients, a fact that brings her tremendous personal gratification, she says. “I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children of the practice grow up throughout the years and start bringing their children for chiropractic care. It gives me great satisfaction to see people get out of pain without the use of drugs or surgery.” Location: 2870 Gulf Breeze Pkwy., Gulf Breeze, FL. hiropractor and physical therapist Dr. Karen Cann is the perfect example of modern chiropractic medicine, which incorporates complementary treatments and spinal adjustments to achieve natural, whole-body health. In fact, Cann went one pioneering step further when she introduced mobile thermography to her Gulf Breeze practice. Thermography is a non-contact, radiationfree screening tool that detects abnormalities in breast and body tissues. “Breast and full-body thermography can warn individuals that a cancer or pos-

sibly a precancerous lesion is forming up to many years before any other test can detect it,” Cann says. “An abnormal thermogram is the single most important sign of high risk for developing cancer. The abnormal breast thermogram is 10 times more significant than a first-order family history of breast cancer.” Recently she acquired permanent, state-of-the-art thermal imaging equipment from the industry leader, Breast Thermography International (BTI). By doubling down on her investment in thermography, Cann has given her patients a

better chance of preventing cancer, which strikes one in eight American women.

Heat Reveals Disease

Thermography uses infrared imaging to detect precancerous and cancerous growths. Even the smallest tumors are characterized by increased blood flow, which generates heat. The images created by thermography reflect those telltale spikes in temperature. “Like mammography and other breast-imaging techniques, infrared imaging does not diagnose cancer. Only a biopsy or other diagnostic study can do that,” Cann says. “It does, however, indicate the presence of an abnormality. This could be cancer, fibrocystic disease, an infection, muscular dysfunction or vascular disease.” The idea of tracking disease through heat is not new to medicine. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, “scanned” the body with clay. Wherever the clay dried first were hot areas, indicating inflammation. In fact, thermography can detect a hot spot anywhere in the body, whether it stems from fibromyalgia, a sprain or dental problems. Cann says she regularly uses the technology to identify pain-related inflammation. But she’s found it particularly effective for pinpointing breast abnormalities before they can become cancerous. Other abnormalities may include lung, thyroid, intestinal and various skin cancers. Since Raymond Lawson, M.D., first used breast thermography in 1957, more than 800 peer-reviewed studies on the subject—representing some 300,000 participants—have been published in medical literature. Because of thermography’s accuracy and, more important, its ability to increase survival rates for breast cancer victims, the Food and Drug Administration approved thermography in 1982. Cann says the top benefit of thermography is that it offers the opportunity of earlier detection of breast disease than is possible with breast self-exam, doctor examination or mammogram alone. She recommends annual thermograms as a complement to those screenings. Patients getting their first breast thermogram should get a repeat scan three months later to establish an accurate base-

line, she says. After that, annual scans will flag changes in the breast tissue. “A woman’s thermal image is like her thumbprint,” she explains. “It should not change over time.”

Superior Technology

Because thermography offers earlier detection and no physical discomfort or radiation risks, it is popular with people who prefer a preventive, less invasive approach to health care. But there have been various methods of interpretation of thermal images over the technology’s 60year history, Cann says. That problem was resolved when BTI emerged as the standard-bearer for thermography. Its cutting-edge technology is supported by the best medical science, she says. “BTI’s members are trained to the highest degree possible through extensive instruction and continuing education,” she says. “Its standards of education are regulated through the Professional Academy of Clinical Thermology, or PACT, a nonprofit organization. All members must adhere to those guidelines.” The thermography equipment used by BTI generates higher-quality images than older thermography technologies, and every patient report undergoes three levels of review by BTI’s team of expert interpreters, all of whom are certified through PACT. The senior reviewer is Dr. Alexander Sepper, a gynecologist with more than 30 years’ experience and a Ph.D. in thermology. Based on their extensive research of thermography, Sepper and BTI founder Anthony Piano, DC, have established new industry guidelines for interpreting thermal images to ensure the highest possible accuracy. Thermography is quick, safe and painless, but it is not covered by insurance. Peace of mind has always been its biggest selling point, Cann says. Now she has the best the industry has to offer—and her patients and the community at large do too Location: Integrative Chiropractic and Physical Therapy Solutions, 4657 Gulf Breeze Pkwy., Gulf Breeze, FL. We are the generation that will do all these things. Why not start now?” In addressing environmental issues, Sonneborn supports a tax on carbon emissions, Vermont’s commitment to uphold the standards of the Paris climate agreement and renewable energy incentives. global youth to engage with sustainability issues. Today, the New Jersey resident serves as its president, and is passionate about why investing in the education of children is significant. As just one example, “Amazonian children are teaching their parents about how deforestation impacts climate change,” says Patel. A degree in environmental law and policy at Vermont Law School, in South Royalton, and expertise in environmental education, curriculum development, field research and community outreach has helped Patel to assist in developing lesson plans for ECI Water Schools. Community groups and schools are mobilized to evaluate the health of rivers and provide basic training in good health habits.

Brandi Kneip’s family in Stuart, Florida, didn’t object when the 18-year-old decided to spend her college savings establishing a JAR dry goods store that fosters reusing and recycling materials to decrease or eliminate trash. Customers can buy what they need by dispensing pasta, herbs, spices, flour and other products into their own reusable jars or purchase glass containers to take home. JAR also carries eco-friendly household items. “I want my impact on this Earth to be like footprints in the sand. For a second, the Earth knows you are there, and when you move along, the waves wash them out or the wind blows them away. I’m so thankful for this big, green-blue planet, and I’ll strive every day to make more people notice the beauty it holds,” says Kneip.

Earth Child Institute

Arati Patel was just 24 when she began serving as an intern with Earth Child Institute (ECI), a nonprofit that empowers

Felix Finkbeiner, a German student, started Plant-for-the-Planet in 2007, when he was only 9. “It’s an amazing organization run by young people,” says Patel. Inspired by the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, founder of the Green Belt Movement, Finkbeiner expanded Maathai’s original concept of a billion plantings to the Trillion Tree Campaign. To date, it’s seen 15 billion new trees in 190 countries under the guidance of the U.N. Environment Programme. Speaking at an Environmental Systems Research Institute Conference, Finkbeiner said that beyond planting trees, children involved in the initiative have delivered presentations in schools and rotary clubs, and engineered sit-down meetings with mayors, local government officials and even presidents of countries. Several have spoken

before the UN General Assembly and national parliaments, urging them to address the climate crisis.

A Revolution in Education

After graduating from Beijing University Affiliated High School, Jason Wang, 18, postponed college for a year and visited the U.S. and Europe looking for the best practices in education. When he returned, he was in no hurry to enter college, but rather to develop the curriculum for Beijing’s Moonshot Academy, which opened in January with 30 students from 14 to 16 years old. Turning traditional methods of education on its ear, Moonshot Academy students are accepted based on their learning ability, independent thinking skills and capacity to turn ideas into action, rather than standardized test scores. Students learn through personalized experiences that enable them to practice and demonstrate core competencies to face the challenges of the future. “Research shows that by the age of 39, today’s average high school graduate will have had nine different jobs, half of which have not been invented yet. Artificial intelligence has changed the playing field. We can’t keep educating kids in the same way,” says Nancy Riehle, executive director of the Creative Academic Network Scholastic Foundation that supports the academy.

Time’s Up

Inspired by the January 2017 Women’s March, Jamie Margolin, a 16-year-old student at Seattle’s Holy Names Academy, launched Zero Hour, a movement for October 2018 31

Republic of the Congo. They jointly developed the organization’s platform. “It’s our generation that is going to be impacted the most by the effects of accelerated climate change that we are causing. This march is a launch. We’re not done,” says Margolin. At a pivotal time in which many theorize that our nation lacks the ability to coalesce around a great enterprise to solve existing problems, it appears that those doing the calculating have not factored in the millions of motivated young people as critical decision makers. It may be that their imagination, energetic drive, passionate self-confidence and “no borders” cooperation paves the way to a brighter future for all. Not waiting for the torch to be passed, young people are seizing it and acting now, no longer naively thinking that there will always be enough time tomorrow. It calls for governments and companies to take action on all climate change and environmental issues, including divesting from fossil fuels; increasing investment in renewable energy; legislating strict carbon reduction targets; encouraging plant-based lifestyles; schooling youth on the importance of reducing our carbon footprint; reducing excessive use of single-use plastic; ending rainforest deforestation; halting all animal cruelty; and preventing loss of biodiversity and species extinctions. Local Garden Inspires More Than One Way to Grow by Sam Smith

T

his isn’t your typical garden. Sure, From the Ground Up Community Garden houses plants, but it also educates the public from grade school to adulthood, gives back to the community and offers entertainment under the stars with a unique and beautiful backdrop. Located directly below the interstate underpass on North Hayne Street, in downtown Pensacola, this forwardlooking greenery took root in 2015, as part of Innisfree Hotels’ corporate responsibility program, The Hive. The idea sprouted when Julian MacQueen, owner of Innisfree Hotels, toured a community farm in Vancouver, British Columbia. “We decided this would be a great project and much needed in Pensacola,” says Jill Thomas, the company’s chief marketing officer. “So we reached out to Mayor Ashton Hayward and the City of Pensacola and asked if they had a property we could use. 34

"They offered us an abandoned community garden in this area, and we revived it.”

Growing Good Food Since blossoming, the garden has hosted educational clinics; volunteer hours for children and adults; and poetry, music and movies in the evenings. The ultimate goal of the garden is to build community, beautify the area and encourage adults and their children to grow their own food. The Innisfree team teaches them how to plant and maintain a vegetable garden in order to reduce their grocery bills, get more exercise, enhance their neighborhood and live healthier lives. “Making the garden a consistent part of my life is one of the best decisions I have made,” says volunteer Jen Ehrhardt. “I learn something new about plants every time I come to the garden. It is humbling

to admit such ignorance, but in turn I have gained a wealth of knowledge that has enriched my life in important ways.” Among them, she says, are gaining lifelong memories with her daughter; taking risks in the kitchen; making healthier choices; and helping bring fresh, local produce to others. She even went back to school to find other ways to teach people the benefits of healthy nutrition. The garden also operates as a small CSA (community-supported agriculture). Friends of the Garden has six to eight members who pay a one-time fee to receive fresh produce and access to garden events. Volunteers help harvest and box the produce. “It is great for someone who wants to eat fresh organic food and to support the garden but doesn’t have the time or desire to work in a garden,” says lead gardener Jennifer Eubanks. “Mainly I think our members love what we are doing and want to support us.”

Growing Good Students This isn’t the first time Innisfree Hotels and The Hive grew something beautiful in Pensacola. In 2012, the company became a supportive partner to Dixon School of Arts & Sciences, a private school created to meet the needs of underserved children in Pensacola. In early 2016, a year shy of the opening of From the Ground Up, Eubanks began inviting Dixon students to work in the downtown garden every other week. Depending on the season, Eubanks says, students and other volunteers may be prepping beds, sowing seeds, mixing soil, creating signs or harvesting. Some students have used the experience to do research, which they presented at the International Science Conference in San Francisco. From the Ground Up is currently raising money for students to travel to Washington D.C. to present garden-related research at the end of this year. “Working in the garden gives me hope that I can help sustain plants of my own in the future," says volunteer Mälaren O'Leary, a local high school student.

Growing a Community Eubanks says she enjoys building community through education, practice and the arts. “Innisfree Hotels supports us, and we then try to sustain ourselves. We do this by hosting music events, classes and donations at events.” Besides benefiting Dixon School of Arts & Sciences, the garden has also hosted fundraisers for Mana Food Pantries. Garden assistant Andrew Hollingsworth says working in the garden gives community members a sense of belonging and wellness. “It teaches me and hopefully others to develop an awareness and sensitivity for living beings, whether it be plant, animal or insect,” he says. “The community garden is a vehicle to share ideas based on a cultural tradition of agriculture. It exposes participants to an essential practice to life and can lead to building relationships and exchange with members of the community. Whether on an intergenerational or interracial level, it gives people an opportunity to work towards a common goal, no matter their cultural background, and to start something new and positive. The garden has the ability to serve as a model for society.” Or, as Hollingsworth says, “Great things can come if we all pitch in and help one another live better lives.” Location: 501 N. Hayne St., Pensacola, FL. For more information, including garden hours, how to volunteer and how to donate, visit InnisfreeHotels.com and click on The Hive.

A Garden Like No Other

ob Eubanks, aesthetic director and volunteer for From the Ground Up Community Garden, says he’s never seen a project like it. Besides its educational and nutrition outreach, it also provides a space for a variety of creative artists and events. “I’m so glad to be a part of it,” Eubanks says. “It has inspired me to become a part of the process of creating and consuming healthy food. The garden is also a hub for art and music and has been home to some of my best and most memorable musical experiences.”

s someone who has helped thousands of clients lose weight and get healthy, Julie Nise doesn’t mince words when she talks about diet-based weight-loss programs. “They flat don’t work,” she says. “They’re not fun, and they aren’t sustainable. Diets aren’t successful long-term because they never deal with the reason people become overweight. People don’t overeat because they’re hungry. They overeat for the same reason people do all kinds of things, like smoking: because they want to change the way they feel.”

The Hypnosis Solution

A certified hypnotist and neuro-linguistic programming trainer with more than 14 years’ experience, Nise offers a weight-loss solution that leaves diet out of the formula altogether. She is a senior trainer for the Master Hypnotist Society (MHS), a col-

laborative of advanced hypnotists who own hypnosis clinics and schools across the United States and Canada. She estimates that the MHS has collectively seen upwards of 80,000 clients in the last 30 years, in places like her Pensacola clinic, Bayside Hypnosis, and her previous hypnosis clinic in Houston. While she also uses hypnosis to help people stop smoking and reduce stress, about 80 percent of her clients seek out hypnosis because they want to lose weight. Lisa Daniels, of Navarre, is just the most recent of Nise’s success stories. She credits Nise with helping her go from a size 12 to a size 4 in just over four months Nise insists that Daniels herself should get the credit for her big achievement, since the ultimate goal of the Bayside weight loss program is to teach people how to feel in control of their lives and take action toward their goals using hypnosis techniques.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, she explains. The hypnotist is just like a trainer. “Hypnosis works through relaxation, fixation and repetition of suggestions, which tend to sink in and becoming part of your thinking when you’re really relaxed,” she says. “So I use hypnosis to help my clients relax and change their mood and state of mind, while offering lots of healthy suggestions to help them shift their preferences and choices.” The result, she says, is steady, healthy, sustainable weight loss—no diets, no meal plans, no points, no group weigh-ins.

Not a Magic Wand

Nise is quick to warn her clients that hypnotism is not a magic wand. Achieving weight loss through hypnosis requires time, practice and a sincere desire to change. “Many people claim weight loss with hypnosis is easy and gives them fast results. And that certainly is true for a lot of people, but of course hypnosis is not something that’s done to you, so the results you get will be completely related to the actions you take to get them,” she says. “Using hypnosis truly helps you change the emotional blocks and sabotaging behaviors that are always in the way of success.” In fact, one absolute requirement of the Master Hypnotist Society is that its members won’t offer single-session treatments, which Nise considers unethical because they don’t allow the hypnotist to

They overeat for the same reason people do all kinds of things, like smoking: because they want to change the way they feel. follow up with clients and offer any necessary support or further training. In order to determine if a person can be accepted into a program, and to make sure hypnosis is right for them, everyone comes in for a free 30-minute screening to ensure that he or she understands how hypnosis works and would be a good candidate for it. Nise is often asked if everyone can be hypnotized. The answer, she says, is no. People who aren’t candidates for hypnosis include those with an IQ under 75, those who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, those who are out of touch with reality due to severe psychosis, and, most commonly, those who simply don’t want to be hypnotized. You must want to do whatever you’re being hypnotized to do, Nise says.

She includes in that last category people who view hypnosis as a quick fix. They are not committed to the idea of actively changing their mindset and lifestyle; instead, they are hoping that Nise will wave a wand and make their bad habits disappear. While clients will notice a difference after their first hypnosis session, she says, that difference tends to be less about an immediate number on a scale than about a refreshing emotional shift. “The first changes are that you calm down inside your head, relax and feel more positive at a deep level. And that’s pretty exciting.” As people move through the program, that emotional shift can permanently affect their choices and behavior if they continue to implement what they learned. That’s when the pounds start dropping off. “Hypnosis uses your unconscious mind and your imagination to encourage and motivate you to take the necessary actions required to overcome any barriers to your success,” Nise says. “Those who are sincere about getting private, personalized weight loss help can have lots of fun achieving beautiful and sustainable weight loss. We have overwhelming proof from average people succeeding far beyond what they have ever done before. They can vouch for the results.” Location: 700 South Palafox St., Ste. 200A, Pensacola, FL. REBOOTING LIBIDO Exercise Rekindles Desire by Maya Whitman

B

ecause exercise delivers so many benefits, it’s not surprising that one of them is increased libido. A low sex drive can affect either gender at any age, and contributing factors include hormonal changes, daily stressors and certain prescription drugs. According to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, shortduration bursts of exercise work to increase circulation and heart rate, thus amping up physiological arousal in women. Sexual performance is enhanced in men by exercising three to five times a week, according to a study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. “Eating right and being committed to a daily exercise regimen that includes strength, cardiovascular and flexibility training is key to maintaining a great libido and continual excellence in sexual function,” affirms Dr. Jeffry Life, author of The Life Plan: How Any Man Can Achieve Lasting Health, Great Sex, and a Stronger, Leaner Body and owner of The Life Center for Healthy Aging, in Charleston, West Virginia.

Healthy Hormones

Exercise increases testosterone, endorphins and adrenal hormones, all of which are essential to a satisfying sex life. Studies from the University of Texas at Austin show premenopausal women experience increased sexual response with exercise, including individuals with diminished sex drives due to the use of antidepressants. “Stress is one of the biggest libidokillers in women, and endorphins released during exercise can reduce stress, improve libido and increase arousal,” maintains Stephanie Mansour, fitness expert and CEO of Step It Up with Steph, in Chicago, Illinois. “Adding 30 minutes of exercise a few times a week can increase endorphins, blood flow and testosterone.”

Aging Passionately

The inevitable hormonal changes of menopause and beyond can dampen a woman’s sex life, but it doesn’t have to become a way of life. “Women can experience side effects of shifting hormonal levels which cause libido to vanish and the vagina to become dry, making us feel

Life in our 40s, 50s and beyond can be wonderful!” Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a problem for many men, and can result from sedentary lifestyles, certain medications and cardiovascular issues. “ED is a huge problem worldwide, and vascular disease is one of the major causes,” says Life. “This can be avoided by eating properly and making exercise an essential part of everyday life, which can also reduce the need for prescription drugs that are another major cause of the problem.”

Strength Training and Yoga

Testosterone—a hormone that plays a significant role in lighting our “fire” and keeping it lit—can be enhanced by adding workouts with weights. “Strength training can boost testosterone, which may boost sex drive in both women and men. For men, I recommend lifting weights and doing push-ups. However, it’s important to note that too much intense exercise or strength training may have the opposite effect, and actually reduce the desire to have sex,” says Mansour. In addition to a daily exercise program that includes cardio and flexibility exercises, Life concurs, “Thirty to 60 minutes of strength training three to four times a week is ideal.” According to a review published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, yoga may increase both male endurance and female response. “Yoga turns off our sympathetic nervous system, the part that keeps us in ‘fight-or-flight’ response. Inversions like the shoulder stand help to harmonize hormones, supporting a well-balanced sex drive,” explains Pam Medina, owner of The Yoga Lily, in Clifton Park, New York. “We need to feel attractive, and yoga can help us to accept the body as a sacred vehicle for the soul.” No matter the age or condition of the body, a more satisfying sex life and better self-image is possible through feeling fit. Life reminds us, “Check with your doctor before taking up an exercise regimen, and know that maintaining a healthy body can give us essential ingredients for a great sex life well into our 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.” Maya Whitman is certified in bodywork and clinical essential oil therapy.

‘Less Meat’ Goes Mainstream

Options Grow for Plant-Based Eating by Marlaina Donato

P

lant-based lifestyles, once considered by some as a fad that would fade, are on the rise worldwide. According to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, 6 million to 8 million Americans have completely eliminated meat, including seafood, from their plates. With a 600 percent increase of people going vegan domestically in the past three years and companies like Nestlé devising vegantailored product launches, plant-based eating

is creating unprecedented demand. “I’ve definitely seen plant-based eating become more mainstream. Many restaurants now provide plant-based options to keep their customers happy, and more food startups are creating nut- and soy-based cheeses, milks and yogurts,” says Lisa Stollman, a plant-based nutritionist in New York City. Vegan lunch options are even making their way into the Los Angeles public school system.

GlobalData, a data and analytics company, reports, “Seventy percent of the world population is either reducing meat consumption or leaving meat off the table altogether,” with Millennials at the forefront. “The environment has been the Millennial generation’s primary concern. Health is of less importance than interest in making the Earth a better place to live,” says Gene Stone, a plant-based diet expert in Hudson, New York, and author of the bestselling Forks Over Knives: The PlantBased Way to Health. Stollman concurs, saying, “The majority of my vegan clients are in their 20s and 30s, and their concern for animal treatment relates to sustainability. Sustainability helps to reduce methane emissions from industrial farms.” Wynnie Stein, co-owner of the iconic Moosewood Restaurant, in Ithaca, New York, and co-author of its groundbreaking spinoff vegetarian cookbooks, has witnessed monumental changes since the early 1970s. Younger cooks at Moosewood have also brought passionate innovations to the establishment. “Millennials are incredibly creative, especially with plant-based and gluten-free dishes. They’re committed to animal rights and issues that affect the health of the planet,” observes Stein.

Benefits All Ages

Since the American Medical Association’s recent suggestion that hospitals consider providing plant-based meals for patients, perceptions are shifting. Holistic Cardiologist Joel Kahn, in Ferndale, Michigan, began teaching plant-based diets to heart patients in 1990, and has subsequently seen hundreds of them avoid invasive and surgical procedures, as well as show less evidence of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity and hypertension. “Many of my patients have decreased or eliminated the otherwise lifelong ‘jail’ of prescription drugs. They learned that disease reversal, not management, is the goal,” says Kahn. Supermarkets across the country are stocking meatless products like plant-based burgers. Many athletes and bodybuilders that have switched away from eating meat attest to improved results by

Millennials Lead the Way

tapping into plant power. People of all walks of life, including seniors, have embraced this paradigm. “There is increased interest in health as Baby Boomers age and start to realize the benefits of a plant-based diet, much of it due to myriad new research,” says Stone. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, a diet rich in vegetables and fruits lowers blood pressure. The American Diabetes Association supports a nutrientdense vegetarian diet that can decrease the risk of certain diseases. For Stollman’s vegan clients aged 50 and older, “Health plays a strong role in their interest in plant-based eating. The science has become clear, and based on the evidence, I continue to teach my clients the importance of including plant-based meals in their daily diets,” she says.

Looking Forward

The surge of people changing their diet has a multilevel impact. “I feel deeply grateful to have been able to help spread the word about plant-based diets. Health, the environment and animal protection are great concerns of mine,” says Stone. Stein appreciates how the positive change in diet benefiting people and the planet is coming full circle. “We’re still amazed and honored to know that our cookbooks have helped to create a sea change. Folks visiting from all over the world tell us how our recipes have influenced several generations of their families.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, multimedia artist and author of books in the spirituality and alternative health genres.
