was amused the other day when a reader called looking for a particular resource and said, “I looked through the pages with all the smiling faces.” I knew exactly what she meant—the Community Resource Guide in Natural Awakenings magazine. Of course, a directory full of resources dedicated to providing solutions, products and services toward healthy, natural and inspired living, would be adorned with smiling faces. That is why we look forward to the Annual Natural Living Directory each year, and the opportunity to showScott & Daralyn case even more smiling faces—a directory of the many Chase passionate, life-changing and life-fulfilling advocates located throughout Northwest Florida. This robust resource is just one of our special editions readers look for, trusting Natural Awakenings to be their guide to a simple, mindful lifestyle. To further the cause, this year we’ve been inspired by a team of wellness enthusiast and independent consultants of doTerra essential oils to join them in promoting the inaugural Holistic Expo taking place at the Navarre Conference Center, a central location in the panhandle, on Saturday, February 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We invite you to participate as an attendee, volunteer or exhibitor and become part of the largest gathering on the Emerald Coast of like-minded believers in wellness and sustainability that embrace the possibilities of a better future. This event will encompass opportunities to meet an impressive lineup of educators, presenters and practitioners sharing cutting-edge information and leading trends in the industry. Plus, it’s a chance to discover the new ideas, products and services that inspire a joyful, balanced and doable lifestyle. Admission is free for attendees, and we are looking forward to seeing you all there. If we can guarantee anything, it’s that the room will smell great and there will be a lot of smiling faces! Kids Get Fewer Cavities When Mothers Chew Xylitol Gum

R

esearch published in the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry has concluded mothers that chew natural xylitol gum regularly will significantly reduce oral infections of mutans streptococcus bacteria in their infants. Five research teams and 11 randomized studies of 601 mothers and their children showed 46 percent fewer infections of the bacteria, which is the central species responsible for dental caries and periodontal disease. The studies included children that were 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months old. Other research supports the claim of xylitol’s beneficial nature. A study from the University of Manchester, in England, analyzing data from 4,216 schoolchildren, showed that using toothpaste containing xylitol with fluoride resulted in 13 percent less tooth decay than using toothpaste with fluoride only. Note: Xylitol is toxic to dogs; if ingested, consult a veterinarian.

High-Fructose Sweetener Aggravates Asthma and Bronchitis

A

large study from the New York Medical College and the University of Massachusetts found that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is linked to a greater risk of asthma and chronic bronchitis. The research included 2,801 people between the ages of 20 and 55 years old. The scientists utilized health data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2003 to 2006 to compare people with a history of chronic bronchitis. The study measured the types of soft drinks consumed, eliminating risks related to known asthma relationships such as smoking. The researchers found those that drank five or more HFCS-containing sodas per week had an 80 percent increased incidence of chronic bronchitis. Greater intake of HFCS has also been linked with higher risk of other health conditions, including diabetes and obesity.

Neti Pot Solutions for Sinus Problems

N

eti pots, used for centuries in Asian cultures to support nasal health and eliminate toxins from the nasal mucosa, have become increasingly popular in the Western world. People use the small Aladdin’s lamp-looking pots to help flush sinuses, usually by pouring a mild solution of unrefined sea salt and water from one nostril through the other (avoid common table salt because it can irritate mucous membranes). The process flushes out unwanted mucus, bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. Frequent nasal flushing is credited with preventing and relieving sinus infections. Some experts recommend a stronger remedy if an infection is present. “The bacteria and fungus stick rather well to the nasal mucosa and few are flushed out with saline flushes,” remarks Herbalist Steven Frank, of Nature’s Rite. LLC. “Most of these nasty pathogens adhere to the mucosa with what is called a biofilm. Within this slime layer, they are well protected and thrive within the warm moist sinuses, so a small saline bath once a day doesn’t bother them much at all.” To deal with stubborn sinus problems, Frank likes using the neti pot with a colloidal silver wash that is retained in the nostrils for ten minutes. This can be supported with regular intra-nasal spraying of the colloid throughout the day. For more information, call 888-4654404 or visit NaturesRiteRemedies. com. See ad, page 10.

Kids Learn Social Skills Through Pretending and Joking

Pensacola now has a Holistic Doctor to help you

LIVE WELL AND HEALTHY, NATURALLY!

• Would you like to sit down and talk to your Doctor about your health concerns?

R

esearch published in the journal Cognitive Science has found that toddlers with parents that played with them using humor and fantasy gained increased skills for learning, imagining and bonding, along with thinking in abstract ways. The researchers tested children between 16 and 24 months old in two phases. The first utilized action play among 25 kids and the second utilized verbal play among 40 children. The parents and children pretended to do activities such as washing their hands with no soap or creating situations using a toy. During the second phase, the children and parents played around jokingly by using words, identifying things in funny ways and making believe they were doing things. The researchers found that joking and pretend play allowed the kids to distinguish cues that helped them communicate and develop skills to understand intentions. The study also found that older toddlers relied more on verbal cues to understand pretending and joking communications.

Super Bowl Eco-Stadium Gains National Spotlight

www.lightenergydancing.com

The 50th Super Bowl will take place February 7 at the brandnew Levi’s Stadium, in Santa Clara, outside San Francisco, and the anniversary isn’t the only thing that’s historic. As part of a trend toward sustainability in athletic facilities, it’s the greenest and most technologically advanced professional football stadium in the U.S. The structure is designed to support sustainability, located on a site with accessible public transportation plus a bike path to encourage fans to pedal to and from games. Its predominantly open and airy, environmentally friendly building plan also takes advantage of the Silicon Valley climate. One outstanding feature is the green roof atop the suite tower on the west side of the stadium. Another is the three solar bridges connecting the main parking area to the stadium that generate energy from hundreds of solar panels. All of the wood used was repurposed from a local airplane hangar at Moffett Field, in Mountain View, California, and other reclaimed building products were used where possible. Reclaimed water sources serve potable and non-potable uses, including playing field irrigation. The local suppliers providing farm-to-table food menus also are required to practice composting and recycling to the greatest extent possible. For more information, visit LevisStadium.com.

Nice Spice

McCormick Going Non-GMO McCormick, the world’s largest spice company, plans to eliminate almost all genetically modified (GMO) ingredients from their product line by 2016. In response to increased consumer demand for healthier options, 80 percent of its overall gourmet herb and spice business in the U.S. will be both organic and non-GMO by 2016, as well as all McCormick-branded herbs, spices and extracts sold in the U.S. They will voluntarily label the updated products to inform consumers as part of a commitment to transparency and consumer education. The first product introduced, a non-GMO vanilla extract, is already available. McCormick also uses steam treatments in its processing to preserve the health benefits of spices instead of the ionizing irradiation used by competitors. Although food radiation is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, some studies link it to significant health problems. “Our consumers are increasingly interested in quality flavors with pure ingredients in their food,” says McCormick President and Chief Operating Officer Lawrence Kurzius. “Our efforts prove that we are listening to consumers and are committed to continuing to evolve.” Source: NaturalNews.com 16

Pioneering Aspen Ski Town Runs Entirely on Renewables

Aspen, Colorado, with a population of 7,000, has become the third municipality in the country, along with Burlington, Vermont, and Greensburg, Kansas, to receive all of its power from renewable sources. Its energy portfolio now consists primarily of wind power and hydroelectric, with smaller contributions from solar and geothermal. The development reflects a decadelong effort made possible in part by a significant drop in the price of renewable energy and new government regulations that internalize some of the pollution costs of fossil fuels, making energy sources like coal increasingly uncompetitive. More than one-third of American coal plants have been shut down in the past six years and new carbon rules make it possible that no new coal plants will ever be built in the U.S. Source: ThinkProgress.org

Reducing Coffee Shop Waste For many, getting a coffee to go at a favorite spot on the way to work or while dropping the kids off at school and running errands is a weekday ritual. It also warms up the body on cold mornings in northern regions this time of year. The java might taste even better if we reduce the amount of waste traditionally involved. Here are a few ways to better cherish Earth’s resources. Avoid the paper cup; carry a reusable thermos or insulated bottle instead as a matter of routine. Author and activist Beth Terry, in her book Plastic Free: How I Kicked the Habit and How You Can Too suggests both stainless steel beverage containers and mugs. She also recommends glass mason jars and points out that EcoJarz recently began making stainless steel caps and lids instead of plastic. Learn more at MyPlastic FreeLife.com. Terry further cites the unhealthy aspects of continual use of paper cups because, “Many are lined with plastic, and the plastic lids are often the equivalent of Styrofoam.” If caught without a favorite reusable container, Treehugger.com’s Katherine Martinko recommends at least giving an old paper cup one more turn. “It’s not a zero waste solution, but if you’ve already got a paper cup in your car or kitchen, you might as well extend its life. Wash and hand it over the next time you get a coffee,” she suggests. “It will still do the job.” For those that add cream, milk or sugar to coffee, consider the waste involved just in the plastic and wood stirrers provided by the shop that are tossed in the trash after serving their one-time function. “Avoid all of them,” advises Terry. “Carry a clean utensil in the car,” such as a bamboo tableware or a spork (combination spoon and fork). Cutting down or weaning off of dairy, sugar and especially sugar substitutes is another healthful move.

tise recommended to be co-treating these disorders with medical physicians, physical therapist, nutritionists and chiropractic providers. This is an area of Welch’s expertise, as is providing general dental oral health care for her entire patient base—or patient family, as she often refers to them. A dentist cannot diagnose sleep apnea, but Welch understands the importance of screening for the signs and symptoms of sleep disordered breathing (SDB), as well as educating patients about sleep architecture and in some cases, referring them to a physician for an assessment and diagnostic sleep study. Welch has recently been investigating forms of SDB that do not technically meet the definition of sleep apnea, such as upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) and respiratory effort-related arousal (RERA) events, which cause severe fatigue. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can be treated with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device. Longterm treatment with CPAP reduces both mortality and the acute blood pressure elevation that occurs with SDB. However, the machine and facial mask aren’t comfortable for everyone. “Many people continue to have issues that they are not able to solve with the CPAP or they just don’t care for that type of apparatus, and become non-compliant,” says Welch. “Then, the physician can refer the patient to me to make an oral appliance that brings the lower jaw forward. However, even oral appliances may fail certain patients, because one solution does not fit all,” notes Welch. “This is where I begin to look more closely at the root of the problem, evaluating the head, neck and musculature factors; considering oral factors, the mouth, gag reflex, shape of the tongue and especially, the jaw joint health,” says Welch. “Initially, we examine the patient by manually evaluating the muscle health of the jaw, feeling around the jaw to study the joint and looking at the jaw posture. We start a trial run with a temporary appliance before investing in a more permanent one one. After fabricating a final sleep orthotic, we continue to evaluate for comfort.” Welch also consults with other

members of the patient’s medical treatment team. “I actively seek and work with other medical and dental specialists to make sure patients are receiving the best care for their individual situation and to move them toward whole body health,” she explains. Nutrition is another area that Welch is passionate about in her functional approach to whole body health, saying, “We’re trained to evaluate a patient’s diet on their risk for cavities. But beyond that, functional medicine recognizes nutrition is how we fuel and fix the entire body. Give the body what it needs and it heals itself. The inflammation of gum disease and jaw and throat problems, for example, can be addressed nutritionally. A supplement packet is often a part of my treatment program for a patient.” Welch is an active member in the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Christian Medical Dental Association and American Academy of Facial Esthetics. She also is a member of Florida's and Okaloosa-Walton Dental Society affiliates, because she believes it is critical to organized dentistry to support the profession at the state and national levels. She believes in sharing her knowledge with other dentists, her patients and staff, as well as the local community. In the past, Welch has given lectures to the local Dental Study Club (the third-oldest study club in Florida), with emphasis on screening for sleep breathing disorders and appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. For the past four years, Welch has presented a table clinic at the Emerald Coast Home Show, and recently participated in a community project called the Homeless Veterans Stand Down, screening 35 veterans and providing pro bona treatment for 10 of them. Welch says she is honored to be helping her patient family achieve overall wellness and health by providing the future of dental care today. Dr. Susan M. early 800 healthcare professionals, representing more than 35 countries and backgrounds ranging from osteopathic, physical therapy and chiropractic to massage therapy and Rolfing, met recently at the fourth Fascia Research Congress (FRC). Seen by many as too long in coming, the focus of the biennial meetings is the investigation of a major factor behind much of disease, pain and aging. The congress, first held at Harvard in 2007, was developed as an educational symposium for international researchers to present the latest findings on fascia—connective tissue which is primarily a collagenous web throughout the body, transports vital elements and supports all biological structures—to the medical, clinical and research communities. In particular, information is emerging regarding the structure, functions and implications of fascial tissue. Manual therapists seeking to better understand causes of pain and for ways to help their patients, are among the most enthusiastic attendees at these biennial congresses. Research findings that validate the importance of addressing connective tissue in therapeutic treatment practices is opening doors for effective approaches to relieving pain. And it is supporting methods taught by such leading therapists as John F. Barnes, PT, named by Massage magazine as one

Natural Awakenings of Northwest Florida

www.NWFNaturally.com

of the most influential persons in the therapeutic profession in the last century. One outstanding presentation at this year’s FRC was delivered by French hand and wrist surgeon Dr. Jean Claude Guimberteau. Using an endoscopic camera, Guimberteau films living connective tissue, magnifying the images from five to 200 times. The videos, and his recent book Architecture of Human Living Fascia, show images of a shiny mesh-like web made of fibrils of fascial tissue. It’s fascinating to see the glistening, net-like, fluid-filled threads sliding upon themselves, continuously changing geometrical shapes and configurations. They even split apart as they adapt to body’s movements. One of Guimberteau’s videos is a side view that shows the area above and below the skin of retracted tissue while a therapist’s fingers are making small, circular movements on the surface of the skin, simulating massage therapy. The pressure of the therapist’s fingers can be seen in the underlying tissue. In effective myofascial release (MFR) there is an emphasis on the three-dimensional nature of the fascial system, feeling the depth barrier and also learning how to feel the opening of the system while allowing sufficient time for the tissue to respond. The mesmerizing, moving images of the body’s interior demonstrate that

muscles do not exist without fascia, something Barnes has taught for years. Guimberteau says there are no layers in our bodies, as illustrations in anatomy books depict. Fascia infuses every part of us, down to the cellular level. Consequently, it has an influence on the condition of our organs, nerves, blood vessels, digestion, lymphatic and energy flow, and so on. This also helps explain why a restriction in one area of the body can have an effect on a seemingly unrelated area. For example, an abdominal scar could be contributing to neck pain by the scar tissue pulling through the torso and up to the neck. Releasing fascial restrictions through MFR therapy and stretching can also have an effect on our cellular function and biochemistry. Another intriguing area of exploration at this year’s FRC dealt with oncology (cancer) and fascia, specifically the importance of the connective tissue matrix in tumor growth and metastasis. Research presented at the congress shows that the network of connective tissue affects all aspects of our body and mind. Dr. Jaap van der Wal, of the University of Maastricht, Holland, quoted an 18th-century Doctor of Osteopathy, A.T. Still, who said, “The soul of man, with all its streams of pure living water, seems to dwell in the fascia of his body.” And Barnes has spoken of Roger Penrose, an esteemed English physicist who proposed that coherent behavior (our consciousness, as we understand it) occurs within the fascial system. We are not made of individual pieces. The fascia is a continuous web connecting and transporting life support in our bodies. Maintaining the most fluid state of the fascia’s ground substance, as it is called, may be one of the most effective forms of health maintenance. Even though Barnes has been teaching about fascia for more than 40 years and Guimberteau has been filming living fascia for 20 years, light is just now beginning to shine on the value of myofascial release therapy and MFR stretching. Janet Hardy, LMT, BCTMB, is a boardcertified myofascial release therapist, licensed in massage therapy. She owns Caring Touch, in Santa Rosa Beach. NEEDLES OVER

KNIVES

Acupuncture Stimulates Youthfulness from the Inside and Out by Daralyn Chase

W

hen I am first introduced to people, they get that look on their face and say, ‘I don’t like needles.’ Some will even move away” says Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Registered Nurse Sheryl Roe. She offers Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapies that include gua sha, cupping, tui na, herbology and 5 element, tongue and pulse diagnosis, and probably best known, acupuncture. That explains the “needle” comments. “As I talk about specific problems that acupuncture can treat, some people will finally ask if it hurts,” she notes. “The answer is yes, there is a very small prick when the needle goes through the skin, but it is slight and goes away immediately. Then, when I mention acupuncture facelifts, women push the men aside and all they want to know is, ‘Does it work?’ To date, I have yet to have a woman ask me if acupuncture facelifts hurt!” Roe is nationally certified in acupuncture and herbal medicine as a member of National Certification Council of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the American Academy of Pain Management and the Florida State Oriental Medicine Association. Retiring after 25 years as a reg24

istered nurse for 25 years, Roe has been treating people successfully with acupuncture and TCM for more than 12 years as a licensed herbalist. She works with Western physicians in providing treatment for patients with a broad range of illnesses and all types of pain, sleep, eating and smoking disorders, as well as anxiety, depression, hypertension, and autoimmune disorders such as lupus and fibromyalgia. TCM is based on the goal of wellness in body, mind and spirit. Every treatment or treatment plan is intended to reach that goal. The basis for acupuncture theory is that qi (energy) travels through the body in channels called meridians, most of which go through our face or connect to one of the channels that do. The liver channel is a good example, as it runs from between our first and second toe to the middle of our bottom lip. First, it passes up through the entire body, including the neck to the top of the head and back down, passing thru the forehead, brow, along the side of the nose and then around the mouth. Frown lines can be seen in the brow and around the mouth. As the energy travels through the meridians and gets close to the surface of the skin, there is a place or multiple

Natural Awakenings of Northwest Florida

www.NWFNaturally.com

places called points where this qi energy can be tapped. The goal of the treatment is to affect the flow of qi energy based on that person’s personal or physical goals. Roe feels that we have been taught to behave and show only positive emotions or if possible, to just not have any undesirable emotions. Women in particular, she believes, hide or hold in emotions. Many channels affect several organ functions, Roe explains, and even our emotional state can be affected by the channels. For example, the emotion that affects the liver channel the most is anger, frustration, a feeling of being stuck and particularly stored and suppressed anger. After long periods of time carrying that anger around, it begins to affect other organs such as stomach and spleen, causing depression and stomach upset. The stomach channel starts in the eye and moves down through the cheek, jaw and in front of the ear, causing more of those lines. One of the many explanations of the mechanisms by which acupuncture works is that with needle insertion, the body endures a micro-trauma that in turn stimulates the injury repair system within the body. It is this natural healing process that stimulates the production of collagen at the site of the needle insertion. Regeneration of the dermis and epidermis produces new collagen and elastin proteins, and new skin tissue essentially appears younger. Roe explained that much of acupuncture’s ability to produce cosmetic improvement was discovered when acupuncturists treating other aging issues of patients would notice a change in the tightness and smoothness of the skin. “Cosmetic acupuncture has been used since the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.) and kept the empress looking youthful,” Roe says. “By inserting needles into specific points on the face, I can stimulate collagen turnover and blood flow to nourish the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. I affect not only the underlying muscles, but also the channels and the qi energy flowing in them that control emotions, as well as water metabolism, waste disposal and energy distribution, sleep and the sense of well-being.” The placing of the needles takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Many people rest

and often sleep, because the feeling is very relaxing. In most cases, a person can see some results right away, but usually over the next week the person will notice their face being firmer, with fewer lines around eyes, mouth and neck, along with substantial physical and mental benefits. Roe says, “While I cannot pretend to fix the things about which women and men have a right to feel anger, acupuncture facelifts can help make the stress less apparent on the face.” Dr. Sheryl Roe practices TCM from two offices: Navarre Healing Arts Center, 7552 Navarre Pkwy, Ste. 44, in Navarre; and 8th Element Wellness Clinic, 90 Beal Pkwy., in FWB. For appointments, call 850-225-3460 or visit DrSRoe.com.

BLUEWATER CHIROPRACTIC WELLNESS CENTER

I

'm a counselor doing it a different way, and it works better and faster in the majority of cases. This is all about learning that you have what you need, built in. It just gets covered up by your thinking. And that's where your feelings come from. And the good news is that you have a good source of thinking built in. The more you listen to this voice that's calmer and wiser and smarter, the better your body feels. Clients realize they can handle life on their own. They might return when big things happen though, because this is where they can address it as quickly and directly as possible. And it's not even complicated; it just takes practice. This is for people who are tired of their old thinking and are ready for a fresh start. This is for people who want an operating system upgrade. This is for people who know it's time to see things differently, because the old way hasn't worked. Just call or email me and I'm more than happy to help you decide if we're a fit. I'm very friendly, too.

Being listened to is so close to being loved that most people cannot tell the difference. ~David Augsberg INDIGO EARTH SPA

hakra balancing, Hawaiian LomiLomi, medical massage – it’s all organic and natural. We massage according to your dosha without you even knowing, because there is intent behind every massage given each time you visit. We customize your session and hand-blend the ingredients from our apothecary for your session and for each and every spa service. You and your therapist together can custom-create and hand-blend your very own body scrubs for your service, and you get to take the extra home. We bring you back to Earth with natural organic remedies for the body, mind and soul. Whether it is massage, herbals, nutrition, meditation or skin health, a combination of therapies provides help for the body to heal itself. The intent behind the spa service to heal, and the power of herbal remedies that I combine with massage and body care will improve your well-being and renew your energy. You will want to come back. While you might book the same spa service, our sessions are not always the same. We change them according to client needs every time they come in.

We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.

r. Konell’s focus is treating the whole person, rather than illness alone. In his practice, which he calls an art, he utilizes osteopathic manipulation to facilitate diagnosing and treating disease. His intention is to open blockages in the lymphatic and musculoskeletal systems to restore natural health and well-being. Board certified in family practice, Konell has enjoyed 33 years of general and family practice treating the various ailments and health challenges of all ages. He believes that many people are over- prescribed, which can do more harm than good, because of potentially serious side effects. He emphasizes a healthy lifestyle, treating the whole person more with natural supplements. Inspired by his father, Charles Konell, also an osteopathic physician, he learned to be a compassionate caregiver and to treat his patients like family. A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, in 1983 he took over his father’s practice in Los Angeles, California, where he served as chairman of family practice at Robert F Kennedy Medical Center. Konell’s wife, Teresa Brown-Konell, a native of the Florida panhandle, is a wellness coach and biofeedback practitioner who has practiced in the Pensacola area for more than 20 years. The Healing Art of Hypnosis by Deana Chapman

M

ost people have arrived at their ideas about hypnosis via the myths and misconceptions presented by television, movies, stories or worst of all, stage hypnosis, which is used for entertainment. Subsequently, hypnosis may well be the most misunderstood therapeutic protocol in use today. Hypnosis can be used for a variety of issues, including focus and memory, overcoming addiction, increasing selfconfidence and self-esteem, perfecting sports performance, recovering from grief/loss, overcoming phobias, weight loss and fitness, quitting negative or harmful habits and more. Although often overlooked for lack of public understanding, hypnosis is a powerful tool that can be used to help change a person’s behavioral patterns, thoughts and perspective. According to a 2008 review article in the journal Nature, there is even an emerging body of evidence that hypnotherapy is clinically effective for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Several well-designed studies have shown long-term benefits for IBS patients, including reductions of abdominal pain, anxiety and depression, the researchers say. A person being medically hypnotized is simply prompted to drift into a relaxed state and led to bypass the conscious mind while listening to and visualizing healthy suggestions. Harold Pass, an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Stony Brook University Medical Center, in New York, has also described hypnosis as putting a patient in an enhanced state of relaxation. The patient is not asleep nor unconscious, and does not lose control over his or her actions, Pass says; the patient is more open to suggestions.

40

Natural Awakenings of Northwest Florida

www.NWFNaturally.com

“The suggestions are solely for the purpose of achieving his or her agenda. This is much like guided visualization that is often used to perfect sports performance or achieve a goal, such as having more confidence or overcoming a phobia. While in a relaxed state, your mind becomes more open to suggestions and susceptible to believing in the endless possibilities. Using this powerful tool can help us to become what we see in our minds,” says Pass. Contrary to what stage and movie hypnosis may imply, people under the influence of hypnosis have total control over their thoughts and their actions. John Hopkins Hospital references state, “Some mentally healthy people are unable to go under hypnosis, while others are very susceptible to this form of therapy. However, hypnotism will not work if the person does not want to be hypnotized, and the subject of hypnosis can interrupt it at any time. Hypnotism requires trust and imagination.” Hypnosis is a real psychological phenomenon that takes place in the brain, so it far surpasses simply talking about issues. In a 2007 study of 200 breast cancer patients that needed surgery, about half underwent a 15-minute hypnosis session before their surgery; the other half talked with a psychologist about their thoughts and feelings before the surgery. Patients that underwent hypnosis required less sedative during the surgery, and perhaps because they were more relaxed, their surgeries lasted 10 fewer minutes on average. They experienced less pain, nausea, fatigue and emotional upset following the surgery. The researchers calculated the hospital could save about $770 per cancer patient by employing hypnosis before surgery. Practitioners of hypnosis therapy claim that talking about problems and solutions offers around a 30 percent success rate in 50 sessions, whereas hypnosis typically has double the success rate in just a few sessions. One of fectors that help increase the potential for success is for the client and the hypnotist to spend a significant amount of time in preconsultation. This helps the therapist to understand the client’s goals and desires, motivations and ideals. It also helps the patient focus on objectives, visualize the desired objective and become comfortable with the therapy.

YOUR MOUTH TELLS A STORY

Functional Dentistry Connects Oral Health to Sleep Apnea and Heart Disease by Linda Sechrist

T

he focus of functional medicine— whole person health care—easily expands to include dentists trained in oral systemic health. Currently embraced by a small percentage of today’s farsighted dentists and doctors, this relatively new field of prevention and wellness views the mouth as a key portal when considering the status of the whole body. Similar to the way doctors of Oriental medicine assess the heart’s pulse to help diagnose health issues throughout the body, these systemic health dentists consider the gums, tongue, teeth and throat to be key signals of overall health. American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH) Executive Director Bobbie Delsasso was a periodontal hygienist for more than 30 years before becoming a consultant and public speaker on the larger perspective. “I taught patients about the importance of good nutrition and alerted them to consult their physician regarding what their mouth health might indicate about their body’s health,” she says. While the academy educates dental professionals to understand the internal workings of nutrition and what the mouth reveals about overall well-being, “Less than 6 percent of physicians even learn adequate basics of nutrition in medical schools,” she notes.

Cardiovascular Health Links

Beyond nutrition, academy curricula for dentists now include such titles as Arteriology and Vascular Inflammation – The Oral/Systemic Connection, based on a 42

course designed for medical professionals by physician Bradley Bale and Amy Doneen, an advanced registered nurse practitioner, co-founders of the Bale/ Doneen Method for the prevention of heart attack, stroke and diabetes. Mike Milligan, a doctor of dental medicine, founder of Eastland Dental Center, in Bloomington, Illinois, and AAOSH president, explains that heart attack and stroke are triggered by an inflammatory process which can be initiated or exacerbated by periodontal disease and abscessed teeth. Thomas Nabors, a doctor of dental surgery and an authority in molecular analysis and genetic risk assessment for periodontal diseases, provides clinical proof that supports the growing association between medicine and dentistry. “Since our inaugural AAOSH conference [in 2010], Bradley, Amy and Tom have continued to provide the current science and clinical backdrop to the oral/ systemic connection to cardiovascular wellness,” says Milligan.

Respiratory Health Links

Other vital advances in oral systemic health involve treating airway concerns such as snoring and sleep apnea. “Snoring is typically caused by muscles and tissues relaxing in the throat and mouth, resulting

Natural Awakenings of Northwest Florida

www.NWFNaturally.com

in decreased space in the airway passage and vibration of tissues. Eventually, individuals can develop sleep apnea, which can also result in hypertension and other problems,” advises Milligan. In sleep apnea, the sleeper’s breathing pauses often or produces hypopnea, slowed or shallow breathing for 10 or more seconds at a time. Fewer than five episodes per hour is normal, with five to 15 considered mild apnea, 15 to 30 moderate and more than 30 severe. Although 20 percent of Americans may have sleep apnea—typically associated with insomnia, tiredness and less oxygen in the body—95 percent of affected individuals go undiagnosed. To help, Milligan suggests that before going to bed we lower the thermostat in the bedroom and avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, watching television or working on a computer. Improved breathing helps assuage snoring, sleep apnea, asthma, hay fever and nasal congestion. Milligan cites Patrick McKeown’s work, explained in his book The Oxygen Advantage. An authority on the Buteyko Breathing Method, McKeown explains how improved breathing dramatically improves oxygenation, releases more energy and supports lifelong health and well-being. Muscle retraining using orofacial myofunctional therapy can help pre vent sleep apnea and also abate temporomandibular

joint disorders. This new field is concerned with orofacial functional patterns and postures when teeth are apart, their status 95 percent of each day and night. It also retrains muscles to keep the tongue at the roof of the mouth and the lips together to prevent breathing through the mouth, correct swallowing function and eliminate poor oral habits such as thumb sucking. Three mechanical treatments for sleep apnea include mandibular advancement oral devices used to move the lower jaw forward, a continuous positive airway pressure machine to aid airway functioning, or surgery, which is the last resort. “The real opportunity for catching and preventing this is with children 5 to 10 years old, when their jaws are developing,” says Milligan. He further cites links discovered between the mouth and brain. “Oral spirochetes, which normally live in the mouth, have been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Dr. Judith Miklossy, from the International Association for Alzheimer’s, spoke at an AAOSH conference about the link between oral bacteria and dementia, and Garth Ehrlich, Ph.D., professor of microbiology, immunology and otolaryngology at Drexel University College of Medicine, addressed rheumatoid arthritis and certain types of cancers. All of these links are more than enough reasons why good oral hygiene is essential to good health,” says Milligan. Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. Ancient Grains for Modern Palates Gluten-Free and Eco-Friendly Grains Gain Favor by Judith Fertig

A

ncient grains are making a comeback. Grown since Neolithic times about 10,000 years ago, varieties of barley, corn, millet and rice have helped assuage the hunger of many communities. Today, yellow millet, dark red wholegrain sorghum, brown quinoa and exotic black rice can help alleviate food shortages. According to Harry Balzer, an expert surveyor of food and diet trends with The NPD Group, concerns about grains and gluten have prompted about a third of Americans to try to cut back on both since 2012. About 1 percent of the population has celiac disease, estimates the Celiac Disease Foundation, but many more prefer not to eat gluten. Many ancient grains are naturally glutenfree, including amaranth, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, rice and teff. “Some think that a grain-free way of eating is healthier and also better 44

for the planet,” says food writer Maria Speck, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, author of Ancient Grains for Modern Meals and Simply Ancient Grains. “But that may be too simplistic, a characteristic of many diet trends.”

Better for Our Health

Whole grains fill us up and provide fiber, both necessary for maintaining optimum digestion and weight, says Kathleen Barnes, a widely published natural health expert in Brevard, North Carolina. Eating more whole grains has been previously associated with a lower risk of major diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, based on studies by the University of Minnesota and Lund University, in Sweden. Qi Sun, assistant professor in the Harvard School of Public Health department of nutrition, agrees that whole grains are one of the major healthful foods for prevention of major

chronic diseases. He’s the lead author of a new Harvard study of data associating consumption of whole grains with a 9 percent reduction in overall mortality and up to 15 percent fewer cardiovascular fatalities during two 25-yearlong research initiatives that followed 74,000 woman and 43,000 men. The researchers cited substituting whole grains for refined grains and red meat as likely contributors to longer life. “Whole grains are nutritional powerhouses, packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, beneficial fiber and even some protein,” observes Speck. With a German father and a Greek mother, she grew up in two cultures where grains are a part of everyday meals. “We eat them because they taste good.”

Better for Local Farmers

Sourcing and eating more organic and GMO-free whole grains (absent modified genetics) can help support local farmers, Speck maintains. Choose barley from Four Star Farms, in Massachusetts; heirloom grits from Anson Mills, in South Carolina; quinoa from White Mountain Farm, in Colorado; or heirloom Japanese rice from Koda Farms, in California.

Better for the Planet

Ancient grains require fewer natural resources to plant, grow and harvest. According to the Water Footprint Network, a pound of beef, millet and rice require 1,851, 568 and 300 gallons of water, respectively, to produce. Substituting grains in diets is a sustainable alternative to meat, and they grow on grasslands that now inefficiently support livestock. According to University of Cambridge Professor of Engineering David MacKay, it takes about 25 times more energy to produce one calorie of beef than one calorie of natural grain. Ancient grains can add variety and flavor to meals and a wealth of them are as close as the gluten-free aisle of a neighborhood grocery or health food store. Judith Fertig blogs at AlfrescoFood AndLifestyle.blogspot.com from Overland Park, KS.

t’s best to cook up a batch of ancient grains ahead on the weekend for use during a busy week. To inject more color and flavor, add a pinch of saffron to turn the cooking water golden, or cook the grains in pomegranate juice. Cooked grain keeps in the refrigerator for up to seven days, ready to enhance salads, soups, yogurt or desserts.

Amaranth. The seed head of pigweed, amaranth can be baked into a custard or added to a soup. Grown by the Aztecs, iron- and protein-rich amaranth can be popped raw in a skillet like popcorn, and then added as garnish to soups and salads. Buckwheat. The seeds of a plant related to rhubarb and grown in northern climates, buckwheat can be ground

into flour for savory French crepes or simmered whole in soup. Quinoa. Grown at high altitudes, quinoa has become a popular addition to salads or yogurt, as well as its own side dish. Millet. A tiny, drought-tolerant grain, millet can be added to bread dough for texture or cooked as a healthy breakfast with toasted almonds and cardamom.

An Eclectic Emporium

Teff. From Ethiopia, the flour of this tiny grain is fermented and used to make the flatbread known as injera. Try a teff waffle with caramelized pineapple.

Buckwheat and Beet Soup 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1½ cups chopped red onion (1 medium) ¾ tsp fine sea salt 2 tsp minced garlic (2 cloves) ¼ tsp dried thyme ¾ tsp dried savory or ½ tsp more dried thyme ¾ cup raw buckwheat groats (not kasha) 4 cups low-sodium vegetable broth ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 cups raw shredded beets, preferably red (1 large or 2 small) 1 to 2 tsp honey 1 cup purified water (approximately) 2 tsp sherry vinegar, or more as needed

Yields: 4 servings

Stir in the buckwheat groats and cook, stirring occasionally and monitoring, until the grains take on some color, about 2 minutes. Add the broth (beware of splatter), the remaining ½ tsp salt and the pepper and bring to a boil, scraping the bottom of the pan. Decrease the heat to maintain a simmer, cover and cook until the buckwheat is tender, about 15 minutes.

Horseradish Yogurt ¾ cup whole milk or 2% Greek yogurt 3 Tbsp retail horseradish, with liquid ¼ tsp fine sea salt ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper To make the soup, heat a large heavy saucepan over medium heat. Swirl in the oil and wait until it shimmers.

While it simmers, prepare the horseradish yogurt topping: Combine the horseradish, salt and pepper in a small bowl and beat until smooth using a fork. Season with more salt and pepper to taste.

Add the onion and ¼ tsp of the salt. Stir

the honey and then add about 1 cup of water to reach a preferred consistency.

Add the vinegar and taste for seasoning. Depending on the beets’ sweetness, maybe add another teaspoon of honey and a bit more vinegar to balance it, and perhaps a tad more salt and pepper. The seasoning is forgiving because the topping will bring the flavors together. Ladle the soup into four bowls, garnish with a dollop of the yogurt topping and serve at once.

Cardamom-Infused Black Rice Porridge with Blueberries and Pistachios Yields: 4 to 6 servings Black Rice ¾ cup black rice 2 whole green cardamom pods 1½ cups boiling purified water

Photo by Erin Kunkel © 2015

Remove the pot from the heat, cover and allow to sit for 5 minutes until the vegetables soften.

Porridge 1 cup half-and-half, plus more as needed 3 Tbsp maple syrup, or more as needed ¾ tsp ground cardamom 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries 4 to 6 Tbsp pomegranate seeds, for garnish 3 Tbsp lightly toasted chopped plain pistachios, for garnish Start the rice the night before: Add the rice and cardamom pods to a large, heavy saucepan. Pour over the boiling water, cover and let sit at room temperature or overnight (or chill, covered, for up to 2 days).

Uncover, decrease the heat to retain a lively simmer, and cook, stirring once occasionally, until the rice is tender with a slight chew, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the cardamom pods, if preferred. Add the blueberries and simmer gently until they are warmed through, 1 to 2 minutes more. To finish, add ¼ to ½ cup more halfand-half to reach a desired consistency. Taste for sweetness and adjust with more maple syrup if needed. Divide between 4 to 6 breakfast bowls. Top each bowl with 1 tablespoon of pomegranate seeds and 1 teaspoon of chopped pistachios. Serve warm. All recipes adapted from Simply Ancient Grains or Ancient Grains for Modern Meals, by Maria Speck, courtesy of Ten Speed Press.

The Hidden Deficiency Having the proper amount of iodine in our system at all times is critical to overall health, yet the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that iodine deficiency is increasing drastically in light of an increasingly anemic national diet of unpronounceable additives and secret, unlabeled ingredients. This deficit now affects nearly three-quarters of the population.

Causes of Iodine Deficiency

Radiation

Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation

Low-Sodium Diets

Overuse of zero-nutrient salt substitutes in foods leads to iodine depletion

Iodized Table Salt

Iodized salt may slowly lose its iodine content by exposure to air

Bromine

A toxic chemical found in baked goods overrides iodine's ability to aid thyroid

Iodine-Depleted Soil Poor farming techniques have led to declined levels of iodine in soil

A Growing Epidemic Symptoms range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and skin and hair problems. This lack of essential iodine can also cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers; and in children, intellectual disability, deafness, attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University and the French National Academy of Medicine.

What to Do The easy solution is taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage to rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the whole body.

SAVE UP TO 35% ON A/C BILLS EACH MONTH... OH, AND YOUR HEALTH TOO!

T

he air conditioning and heating (HVAC) system in residential A/C units consumes about 45% of all electrical uses within our homes. So, in general, if your power bill is $300 per month in the summer, you’re A/C is responsible for about $135 of the bill. Not only is the HVAC system the largest consumer of energy in the home, but it wastes more than any other device – including lights and all other appliances. In 2007, over 113 million homes consumed nearly 1.4 trillion kWh of electrical energy and due to inefficiencies , the total waste equaled about 212-billion kWh -- or enough energy to power 17-million new homes. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that the problem is unseen. In other words, we are simply unaware of the waste within our HVAC systems. We continue to pour millions of dollars out an open window needlessly. Technology has now provided an answer.

This problem can be greatly mitigated by having a clean A/C coil (the part of the system where heat is removed from the air). The conventional method of coil cleaning is to have the coil removed and acid washed periodically. This is a colossal waste of time and money. With the use of Everclean Green’s Force Field system, the HVAC is Self-Cleaning. The performance of a HVAC system can improve by as much as 35%, saving up to 2000 kWh per year per system by installing Everclean Green. With this system you

can throw away those restrictive, costly and annoying filters. These filters are unnecessary and the need to clean the coil is eliminated, the HVAC system can now operate at peak performance all year, translating into cooler air for less money$$. A clean system is an efficient system. Oh, and not only do you save money but the Everclean Green system also effectively eliminates airborne particles, toxins, dust, mold, viruses, and bacteria growing and circulating through the system for heather indoor air. This system is now available for existing and new HVAC units in the Panhandle. Stop paying huge electric bills and sweating today. Ask your local A/C contractor about this innovative product today or go to www.evercleangreen.com to find a local authorized contractor for an Everclean Green system.

Saving you money and your environment at the same time Self Cleaning A/C and Heating Systems (New and Existing systems)
