Ballot Initiative Advances Sustainable Transportation Options
P
roposition 104, on the August 25 ballot in the city of Phoenix, is a comprehensive transportation plan that will expand light rail and bus service and repair aging streets across the city. Prop 104 gives all of us more transportation choices, fights congestion as Phoenix grows and spurs economic development to create jobs. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has called it the most comprehensive transportation plan in the city’s history. He thinks it is forward-thinking, ambitious and represents the future of Phoenix. He and other city leaders support the passage of Proposition 104 to ensure a modern, robust transportation system for the Valley. It is expected that this plan will improve the quality of life for residents by expanding transportation options for seniors, people with disabilities and families with limited resources; increase accessibility to higher education with direct connection to more colleges and universities; alleviate congestion as population increases; and strengthen the city’s vibrant, urban core to attract more talent to the local workforce. Best Selling Sedona Author Tom Bird Leads Writing Weekend
I
f completing a whole book in one weekend seems like an impossible goal, beginning writers will be ecstatic to find out that it’s not, by attending a Write Your Best Seller in a Weekend Retreat, from August 27 to 30 or November 5 to 8, in Sedona. Tom Bird, author of 29 books, has been working with new authors for three decades, and they are not only writing books, but also getting them published. In 2014 alone, 24 of the books written in Bird’s retreats went on to become number one Amazon bestsellers, and he expects to top that number this year. Bird works his magic by leading his authors to tap into the books he knows are inside them, and then convinces them to maintain that focus as the books quickly pour out of them. Bird says that his retreats work especially well for those that have never written, but want to write and have no idea what they want to write about. Those with writing experience or preconceived ideas of what they want to write about also thrive. “Tom is simply the finest writing coach in the world,” claims literary giant Paul McCarthy, editor to nine number one New York Times bestselling authors, including Stephen Coonts and Clive Cussler. “Even Stephen King could learn something about writing from Tom,” says Jean Marie Stine, author and former editor-in-chief of Tarcher Books. “Thank you for showing me how to get published… over 850,000 copies sold to date,” says Jan Larkey, author of Flatter Your Figure (Simon and Schuster). Herbs for Performance, Enhancement and Recovery
O
utdoor summer activities can sometimes leave the body a bit bruised and battered. While the tendency is to take extra care of ourselves only after the damage has been done, taking a proactive approach by using herbs to prepare for exertion can cut down on post-workout pain, improve athletic performance and help recovery. Before heading outside to work out, Nature’s Rite founder Steven Frank recommends using sweet marjoram for muscle cramp relief, peppermint leaf to improve circulation and witch hazel to lubricate muscle fibers. Penelope Ody’s The Holistic Herbal Directory suggests that using these herbs can also cut down on discomfort during strenuous physical activity. Devil’s claw can be applied to provide joint relief. According to Andrew Chevallier’s Natural Health Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, applying juniper berry to flush lactic acid from muscles and white willow bark for pain relief can help to offset the effects of pushing the
body harder than usual during exercise. After the workout is complete, Ody’s Natural Health Complete Guide to Medicinal Herbs recommends the application of comfrey to increase fibroblast activity for building new muscle fibers and repairing microtears in tendons, as well as Arnica montana to break up microclots to clear the way for recovery, while easing pain. Frank says, “Each of these herbs, roots and bark can be combined in a water decoction to provide the right preparation for outdoor activities. The mixture should be sprayed or wiped on large muscle groups and joints for maximum effectiveness.” For more information, email SteveF@NaturesRiteRemedies. com or visit MyNaturesRite.com/blog. if they’re running errands, dropping off laundry or getting a drink with friends. The app contains a grid with all of the available bikes to rent downtown and where to lock them up when done. There are 500 available bikes in the Phoenix area, and 250 each in Mesa and Tempe. The rates are
$5 hourly, $30 monthly or $79 annually ($59 with student discount). Grid Bikes and sustainability go hand-in-hand because bicycles have no emissions. The bike also has a solar-powered panel on the back that can be used to store energy if the rider becomes tired and needs an extra push while cycling. If more people take interest in doing their daily commute via Grid Bikes, there could be a promising expansion of bike lanes and a more biker-friendly atmosphere in Arizona cities. Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation is a Whole Body Antibiotic Therapy by Dr. Bridget Walsh
U
ltraviolet (UV) blood irradiation (UBI) is a simple, non-toxic U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatment, also known as biophototherapy, photoluminescence, photopheresis, hemoirradiation and photodynamic therapy, that exposes blood to ultraviolet light to stimulate the immune system and destroy pathogens in the body including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, cancerous cells and parasites while rapidly clearing biological toxins. Ultraviolet blood irradiation therapy has been used since the early 1900s to treat specific diseases and infection. Dr. Neils Ryberg Finsen, the “father of UBI therapy”, was awarded a Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1903 for successfully treating people with lupus and other skin conditions using UV light. It was shown to treat diseases such as septicemia since the 1920s by American researcher Dr. Emmet Knott, and clinical studies in the 1940s showed UBI to be an effective treatment for polio virus, but was soon replaced by vaccines. UBI therapy was so well accepted that it was used in many hospitals across the U.S. for decades. Unfortunately, this treatment was largely abandoned with the discovery of penicillin, and went out of favor as huge advances in antibiotics, vaccines and corticosteroids were discovered in the 1950s. It was thought that antibiotics would cure infections, and steroids would treat allergies and autoimmune diseases, but today we know that steroids have dangerous side effects and antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, not viruses. Also, many bacterial infections have become antibioticresistant, the so-called “super bugs” created by the antibiotics themselves. These developments are piquing
new interest in UBI, and light therapy is being revisited due to increased medical costs, ineffective drugs and antibiotics and a plethora of unwanted side effects attached to modern prescription medications. Dr. William Campbell Douglas, M.D., has written, “It [UBI] is a thoroughly tested, proven therapy that uses the healing power of light to perform almost miraculous cures. This remarkable treatment works its incredible cures by stimulating the body’s own immune responses. That is why it cures so many ailments and why it has been especially effective against AIDS. Yet, 50 years ago it virtually disappeared from the halls of medicine.” The actual treatment is very simple and relatively quick, taking only half an hour. Blood is drawn with a butterfly needle and tubing and travels through a small glass chamber called a cuvette, which is then exposed twice to ultraviolet light through Knott’s
hemo-irradiator device and returned to the patient’s body using a sterile, closed-loop system. Many patients will feel significant improvement after just a few treatments, and usually only three to five treatments are sufficient. Severe and chronic conditions may need 10 or more treatments, which are greatly enhanced in combination with other oxidative therapies such as ozone and hydrogen peroxide IVs. According to the Foundation For Blood Irradiation, in research and clinical trials around the world, UBI therapy has been effective in treating viral diseases, bacterial infections, fungal infections, inflammatory conditions, autoimmune conditions, poor oxygen, poor circulation, cancer, lymphoma and more. Although largely ignored by the conventional medical community, UBI therapy has been well-documented, thoroughly tested and proven to work. Individuals may contact a naturopathic physician that has experience working with UBI to determine if this therapy is appropriate. Dr. Bridget Walsh is a naturopathic physician at Chelation Care USA, in Scottsdale. For more information, phone 480-998-9232 or visit ChelationCare.com. See ad on page 23.

Looking Beyond the Prescription for Lyme Disease Therapy by Dr. Paul Stallone
T
o conventionally address Lyme disease, a prescription for antibiotics is generally the first line of therapy. This prescription will vary, depending on the patient and the symptoms they are presenting. A patient with acute symptoms or a diagnosis that is fairly recent will generally start with a month-long course of antibiotics. Someone with a longer history could be on a prescription or numerous prescriptions for many months and/or multiple rounds. This approach to Lyme disease has many experts issuing warnings because there are many antibiotic-resistant bacteria created by the overuse of antibiotics that can cause deadly infections and other serious complications. While antibiotics have their uses in the medical community, they can still be harmful. Some studies found that a single course of antibiotics can cause permanent changes to our beneficial gut flora, leading to intestinal and immune system problems. Some beneficial bacteria species can take more than six months to recover and repopulate the intestines. After the conventional treatment by aggressive use of antibiotics, Lyme disease is supposedly cured. However, the bacteria causing Lyme is very clever; it learns to change its shape and hide in different tissues throughout the body. This adaption requires ever-evolving modalities to combat the infection and fully eradicate the disease. Conventional
22

treatments are straightforward and may not be able to stay ahead of this morphing bacteria, so when the infection is allowed to progress, significant damage may be caused. Almost no part of the body is safe, but common complaints include joint pain, adrenal fatigue, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive issues and mood instability. The endocrine and neurological systems tend to suffer heavily. Antibiotic use will help address the infection, but not the damage the bacteria causes to the body. Conventional treatments often rely on short-term methods to relieve the symptoms, but don’t provide lasting solutions or repair to the body. Before treating Lyme disease, a proper diagnosis should be obtained. Lyme disease is a spiral-shaped bacteria that is transmitted by a specific tick bite. Unfortunately, the tick can also transmit other bacteria, causing co-infections that may require different or additional treatments for proper treatment. Specialty lab tests should be ordered to discover these infections and determine whether they are acute or chronic in nature. However, physicians that are not well-versed in Lyme disease may not know which tests to run, delaying a diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Alternative treatments based on individual needs and symptom manifestation are proving worthy therapies to address Lyme disease. A combination of IV therapies, injections, joint treatments, homeopathic remedies, vitamins, minerals and herbal medicines are all part of treating this complex illness. The proper treatment of Lyme
disease should consist of addressing both the infection and repairing the damage done to the system by the bacteria. Anyone experiencing unexplained or persistent symptoms should seek out a qualified naturopathic physician for an evaluation. By ignoring these warning signs, considerable damage may be caused that takes years to reverse. Paul Stallone, NMD, founded the Arizona Integrative Medical Center, located at 8144 E. Cactus Rd., Ste. 820, in Scottsdale. He combines natural/ alternative/conventional treatments to best fit and benefit each individual patient’s needs. Food Democracy By the People, for the People and Toward a Stronger Nation by Melinda Hemmelgarn

o more fully understand the concept of democracy, we can look to some past U.S. presidents. Abraham Lincoln defined it as “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Thomas Jefferson said, “An informed citizenry is at the heart of a dynamic democracy.” Harry S. Truman further recognized that “secrecy and a free, democratic government don’t mix.” By extension, “food democracy” describes a fair and transparent food system in which people have informed choices and control in determining what and how they eat. It’s what happens when we view people as citizens, rather than consumers, and treat food as a human right, reports the Oakland, California-based Pesticide Action Network (PAN). Kelly Moltzen, a registered dietitian in Bronx, New York, and member of the Franciscan Earth Corps, defines it as having the freedom to make choices about the integrity of our food 24

from farm to plate, so that we can support the health and well-being of ourselves, the Earth and all organisms that inhabit the ecosystem.
Food Sovereignty Feeds Independence
A PAN report on food democracy describes food sovereignty as the international equivalent of the U.S. movement to re-localize control over our food and farming. It’s rooted in regenerating historically autonomous food systems with, for and by the people. John Peck, Ph.D., executive director of Family Farm Defenders, in Madison, Wisconsin, explains that the term “food sovereignty” was coined about two decades ago by the globally active La Via Campesina, comprised of family farmers, farm workers, fishing folks, hunters, gatherers and indigenous communities around the world. “At its most basic,” Peck says, “Food sovereignty is about reclaiming local democratic control over our

In their report, Deepening Food Democracy, the Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), in Minneapolis, describes how U.S. food and farming has increasingly become concentrated, consolidated and controlled by the few. Local food enthusiasts want to take back their food system from industrial, corporate masters that lobby for legislation which denies citizens the right to know how their food is produced or if it contains genetically modified ingredients (GMO). The growing local food movement is as much about returning power to communities, food workers, farmers and farm workers as it is about producing and distributing healthy, sustainably grown food, reports IATP. Anthony Flaccavento, an organic farmer in the Appalachian region of southwestern Virginia, has been working on national food and sustainable farming initiatives for nearly 30 years. In a recent Food Sleuth Radio interview, he described the resulting tremendous, multiple positive impacts of strong local economies, noting that a strong local food system is usually at their center. “Once you have vibrant, diverse local economies,” says Flaccavento, “you have better health, lower crime and incarceration rates—and more civic participation.” Basically, a more democratic food system could help
In a food democracy, everyone is a stakeholder. Not only do people have equal access to food, but they’re informed, active, engaged and participating. ~Rose Hayden-Smith, author, Sowing the Seeds of Victory fix many of the maladies ailing our nation today. The steady growth of farmers’ markets, farm to school programs and food policy councils prove that Americans are hungry both for clean food and an enhanced sense of community. While Flaccavento appreciates conscious consumers that support local food providers, he emphasizes, “Just acting locally isn’t enough. We need to re-engage with bigger social and political debates, as well.”
Growing Vegetables and Democracy
After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Jenga Mwendo knew she had to leave her high-powered job in New York City and return to her hometown in the devastated Lower Ninth Ward. “My parents raised me to contribute,” Mwendo explains. “My first name means ‘to build’ and my last name means ‘always progressing’.” In 2009, Mwendo founded the Backyard Gardeners Network (BGN), a local nonprofit organization that restores and strengthens what had once been a thriving, closely knit, self-reliant community, rich with backyard gardens and citizen engagement. Residents went to work, recognizing the potential of community gardens to revitalize their neighborhood and bring affordable healthful food to residents, many of them suffering from obesity, heart disease and diabetes. The BGN both revitalized a community garden and converted a blighted lot into a Guerrilla Garden, where people of all ages gather to grow food, share stories, embrace their cultural heritage and learn how to become responsible citizens. natural awakenings

“We bring people together and make decisions collectively,” says Mwendo. “The garden is for our community, by our community.” Understanding the value of involving children and teens, she adds, “Kids know they will be loved here. This is a nurturing environment.” Like Mwendo, Stephen Ritz, a top 10 finalist in the Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher Prize, is reaching youth through food. Based in New York City’s South Bronx, one of the country’s poorest school districts, he and his students are growing vegetables in school, thereby improving children’s diets, health, school performance and future potential. “We are contributing to food democracy by making sure every child we touch, regardless of income, zip code and skin color, faith or nation of origin, has access to fresh, healthy, nutritious food that they help grow,” says Ritz. So far, his Green Bronx Machine community has raised 30,000 pounds of vegetables. “We’re growing justice,” Ritz announced in his March 2015 TED Talk. “My favorite crop is organically grown citizens—graduates, voters and students who are eating [better] and living healthier lives!”

Saving Seeds, Saving Democracy
Jim Gerritsen operates Wood Prairie Farm with his family in Bridgewater, Maine. He’s dedicated to using organic farming methods to protect the en-
vironment and food quality, provide ample harvests and foster good jobs for the next generation of young farmers. As president of the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association, Gerritsen led a lawsuit against Monsanto in 2011, challenging the validity of seed patents. In a Food Sleuth Radio interview, he explains, “Patented seeds cannot be saved and replanted. To take that right away from farmers was a terrible mistake on the part of the Supreme Court.” Seed ownership belongs to the people; our seed resource is part of our common heritage. “Genetic engineering was an invention to take away from the commons the ownership of seeds,” he continues. “Regaining control of the seed supply is one of the most pressing battles we have in agriculture.” Gerritsen encourages everyone to plant an organic garden using organic seeds and to advocate GMO labeling. “Let’s let transparency reign, which is a hallmark of a democratic system,” he proclaims. now backing the food protocols I’ve shared the last 10 years, I have a lot more attention from doctors and have certified many in our Conquering Any Disease Food Healing system. Dr. Claudia was deeply inspired by the Qi Revolution food component. She grew tired of prescribing Lipitor to every patient with high cholesterol, especially when studies now show high cholesterol is not even a key indicator for risk. Since meeting us last year, she’s helped countless patients with our food protocols for heart disease and is teaching a class with me to present her latest testimonials. Both Qigong and Food Healing are beneficial to reaching our highest potential.
Qigong Healing and Universal Oneness Interview with Jeff Primack, Founder of the Qi Revolution Conference
KRW: What about the Qi Revolution conference is most exciting for people?
by Kathy Rivera Kathy Rivera Wallace: I attended your Qi Revolution conference before and was blown away seeing so many different types of people practicing Qigong together. What makes learning Qigong in big groups more powerful, and what do you think has allowed you to reach such a large audience? Jeff Primack: Where two or more are gathered, a unified Qi field exists. Qigong breaks through people’s doubt with a tangible magnetic force. When a few thousand people practice Qigong in a convention center ballroom, the group energy from all the focused people makes the Qi far stronger than what we can achieve alone. The most spiritually profound practices are breathing exercises that deliver a type of ‘euphoric high’ from the oxygen and energy absorption. Part of our success in sharing Qigong comes from the use of videoanimation and specialized music allowing people to FEEL AND CONNECT TO QI POWERFULLY, which is the most important factor. Feeling energy pulsing through your body is a clear benefit, and men are especially drawn to the tangibility of Qigong. Feeling a ‘magnetic arc of energy’ flowing overhead and pulsing through the arms is heavenly divine.
KRW: I found the Qi so life changing. Can you outline the overall essence of Qigong for newcomers? JP: The first goal of Qigong is to absorb EXTERNAL QI IN THE AIR we breathe and live inside of. Breathing techniques and graceful movements harness and absorb this energy directly. Your PERSONAL ENERGY IS INTERNAL QI, and this builds up quickly with practice and eventually “Overflows the Dan Tien”. The most profound secret of Qigong is to raise energy up the spine to the pineal and pituitary glands. I’ve spent my life studying with different Qigong masters from all over the world and it’s fascinating to see, unlike professional athletes, that the oldest Qigong practitioners have the strongest abilities. KRW: You’re currently teaching a Food-Healing class with a physician, Claudia Gabrielle, MD. How does the medical community respond to your teachings on using food to reverse specific diseases? JP: To be honest, when I first began teaching Food-Healing in 2005, there was less interest from physicians than now. Due to more scientific studies
JP: Feeling your body coming alive and supercharged with energy is pretty exciting. Discovering your own higher potential is like an epiphany. Learning to use Food-Healing to maximize your state of wellbeing stands out, but most of all I’d say the 9-Breath circle is the tops. We are all holding hands doing a powerful Qigong breathing technique and the combined group energy is indescribable. Hands are electric and a feeling of oneness is experienced. See ad on page 7. Interviewer Kathy Rivera Wallace is a TV talk show host who regularly interviews leading wellness experts. Jeff Primack is a Qigong teacher who studied with many Qi masters from all over the world and has taught 50,000+ people at live Qi Revolution conferences across the U.S. (Part 2 of this interview appears next month) “Qi Revolution” comes to Tucson Convention Center September 5–8. Jeff Primack and a trained group of 20 Qigong teachers will teach 4-days of Qigong for only $149! This is the largest Qigong event in Arizona. he Mental Health Coalition Verde Valley was formed in September 2013 to build community support and awareness for individuals and families living with mental illness by organizing education programs, advocating for improvements in the criminal justice system related to individuals with mental health issues, and learning about and supporting community organizations that provide services. In 2014, the Coalition published a 32-page guide to mental health resources in Sedona and the Verde Valley. From May 11-16, 2015, the Coalition reached over 500 members of the community through 13 free events including films, presentations, and community conversations. Among the highlights were the showing of Canvas by film maker Joe Greco, the story of a family (his family) where the mom is living with schizophrenia. Another film shown, Running from Crazy, is the Mariel Hemingway story of trying to break the cycle of suicides in her family. Other topics addressed children and mental health issues, recovery options, holistic healing methods, what it’s like to live with mental illness, and spirituality and resilience as a dimension of wellness. On Saturday, May 16, members of the community gathered at Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village in Sedona to honor those lost to mental illness and for a community portrait, “The Faces of Compassion.”

Songs of Freedom We All Long for Liberty by Enrique Smeke he yearning for freedom is like a seed that dwells deep in our hearts—freedom from scarcity, from conflicting relationships, from addictions, from health issues. This yearning for freedom binds the centuries. In the Americas, this clamor can be heard in the words of the national anthems of many countries. The Colombian national anthem mentions the “invisible light of sublime freedom.” The Uruguayan anthem says, “Freedom, that clamor that saved our country.” The Mexican anthem asks that “the echoes resound with voices of unity and freedom.” The Argentine anthem exclaims, “Listen, mortals, to the sacred cry: Freedom,” and the American anthem reminds us that this is “the land of the free.” Mary Baker Eddy proclaims in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “Citizens of the world, accept the ‘glorious liberty of the children of God,’ and be free!” Let the seed in your heart sprout. Water it with gratitude. Accept the liberty to be free as your God-given nature. Yearn to see each other as God’s child, to feel God’s ever-present love and to grow freer and freer from all limitations—and watch as the seed’s tender shoots manifest themselves in improved health, progress and joy in families, friends and the world. Let freedom always be included in your anthem song.

The Challenge of Understanding Fibromyalgia by Dr. Boris Schwartz
A
ccording to the Mayo Clinic, fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way the brain processes pain signals. Fibromyalgia is a complex disease, and many treatments have been offered, but results are still mediocre from the conventional medicine perspective and many different options to help patients with their issues are available from a natural medicine perspective. Options for treatment from the medical perspective include pharmaceuticals, such as Lyrica, Neurontin, Cymbalta and others. For some patients, drug therapies may provide some relief. Natural medicine offers multiple approaches to patients suffering from fibromyalgia, and each person is treated differently. Options range from medical foods to Traditional Chinese Medicine and natural injection therapies. Some examples of treatment include encouraging the parasympathetic nervous system activity to predominate (relaxing the patient), putting them on an amino acid regimen affecting

their perception of pain (several protocols exist), rebuilding the patients from the inside out utilizing Chinese medicine or injection therapies for pain and inflammation, and/or using special essential fatty acids (EFA) for pain. But if we believe that fibromyalgia is a brain issue (which it could be), the anti-inflammatory effect of EFA does not work well by itself. Injection therapy provides relief because sometimes myofascial pain will cause discomfort in an area distant from the real pain originator. Adrenal fatigue may or may not play a role in fibromyalgia. Pain by itself will cause fatigue, and stopping the pain will stop the fatigue. Adrenal support may or may not offer benefits. There are other causes of the chronic pain labeled as fibromyalgia. In lax joint syndrome, ligaments and tissues are stretched beyond physiological limits, causing issues. People with lax joint issues or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV may also experience pain that could be diagnosed as fibromyalgia, but their treatment should be different. There is no known treatment though allopathic medicine can address some symptoms. Naturopathic medicine can help patients suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal issues. Several studies are under way to figure out what could be beneficial for these patients with different forms of pain from fibromyalgia to chronic pain. Remember that the goal of therapy is to restore normal body function, the ability to rest and to be free from pain. Dr. Boris Schwartz is a naturopathic physician and the owner of Original Health Institute, in Phoenix. For more information, call 602-788-4333 or visit OriginalHealth Institute.com. The Significance of the Precautionary Principle by Diann Peart
I
n 1998, the Science and Environmental Health Network, made up of scientists, government representatives, labor activists and environmental leaders, met in Racine, Wisconsin, to develop a commonsense approach to environmental concerns and life in general. They called this approach “the precautionary principle” and defined it as follows: “When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken, even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically.”
– SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION –
Because cause and effect are often difficult to establish scientifically and take lots of time and funding to do the research, we are still risking both human health and ecosystem functionality. When it comes to environmental issues and chemical regulations in the U.S., most decision making is like our judicial system, which says an activity is safe (innocent) until proven harmful (guilty). Within that perspective, there is little incentive for agencies or corporations to follow the precautionary principle; consider threats like oil fracking, organophosphate pesticides, GMOs and many household cleaning products. It feels overwhelming to realize that there are more than 80,000 different chemical compounds currently being made and used globally. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) receives approval applications for 2,000 more compounds annually, without the needed budget increases to follow through effectively. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that in 2003 fewer than 50 percent of all chemicals submitted for approval to the EPA revealed even basic toxicity data, and more than 80 percent of those were approved within three weeks. In 2010, EWG researchers detected nearly 300 chemicals in the cord blood of 20 American newborns. Most of these chemicals entered our homes in products that were thought to be safe: soaps, cosmetics, cleaners, air fresheners and myriad others that don’t tell us exactly what’s inside. It has been estimated that the average American home contains from three to 10 gallons of toxic chemicals. It’s time to make a commitment to the precautionary principle in our homes: if we feel that there might be harm in a product, substance or activity, investigate it. Read labels and Google the information. Diann Peart is co-founder of Truce, which produces toxin-free cleaning products for home, personal and pet use. For more information, visit TruceClean.com. Putting a Price Tag on Sustainability in Home Sales by Jan Green
T
hose that have ever bought or sold a home using a loan for financing know what an appraisal report is—it’s a written opinion of value given by a professional hired by a mortgage company through an appraisal management company. As with any opinion, there can be more than one, so two different appraisers may determine a different estimate of value for the same home. There can be many seemingly unrelated factors that determine the value of a home, including structural condition, location, recent sales, upgrades and type of upgrades, added features, maintenance of the home, size of the lot and landscaping. An appraiser usually doesn’t give a specific dollar figure for upgrades in a home that may be of a higher standard than a neighboring home that sold recently. Some appraisers might have a range in mind but still not assign a specific number for a given upgrade. That is why it is always a good idea to provide a list of upgrades that have been added to a home by the current owner, including the date of installation, cost of the upgrades and features added. Armed with such a list, an appraiser can add value based on that specific information. This list can also include replacing major appliances, including air conditioners and hot water heaters. If energy-efficient items have been added that may not be visible during a review of the interior of a home, add those to the list, too. After all, an appraiser does not climb into attics during a review for an appraisal, and won’t

know if a replacement is more energy-efficient unless it is pointed out. An appraiser must also be familiar with an area (geographical competence). To find out if an appraiser is geographically competent, ask them before they arrive at the home if they’ve worked in the area before. Learn how long they’ve been an appraiser and if they are familiar with the surrounding area, especially if the home is in a master planned community. If a home has energy-efficient features, they must also be competent and trained to provide value for these features by understanding their attributes and benefits. To know if an appraiser is trained in energy-efficient homes to assess upgrades, visit AppraisalInstitute.org site under the Education/Green Building Resource tab for a state-by-state list of appraisers that have taken the required courses to be included as being Green Qualified. Insects Can be Kept at Bay Using These Tips by Scott Preller
B
ugs can be helpful to our environment, but can cause us a great deal of concern, as well. Some serve very little to no benefit, like roaches or crickets, while others can actually help decrease other pests around the home, like spiders and scorpions. Although there can be some drawbacks to those, there are others that are beneficial with very minimal downsides, such as tarantulas and praying mantis. Some things to think about in addressing a pest situation are the landscaping, where things are stored inside and outside of the home (like cardboard boxes versus plastic totes) and personal habits, because those can all can have an impact on what and how many bugs are seen around the house. Summertime is definitely an increased bug activity time, but there are things we can do to reduce the pest impact, such as placing potted plants up on stands to eliminate hiding places for bugs; helping water evaporate more quickly; and allowing predators such as lizards and birds access to places where bugs may try to hide. If gardening and composting, keeping the compost as far away from the house as possible helps immensely, as does having a composter that is raised off the ground, or having one that is easily maintained by just rolling or turning the barrel. Inside the home, there are several easy things to consider in helping reduce pests. For starters, look at the doors. Checking the weatherstripping and thresholds can make a big impact, especially at the bottom of the door.
Lie on the floor with the lights inside off and the screen door open, if there is one, during the daytime and see if there’s light coming in. If there is, fix it. When light is coming in during the day, it means it’s also going out at night when the lights are on, which invites critters in. Similarly, if there are drains in the house that aren’t being utilized on a regular basis, that’s a great place for life forms to enter from the sewer or septic system. Plugging the drain doesn’t always solve the
problem, because most sinks or tubs have overflow drains that go to the same place as the main drain. Water acts as a natural barrier to keep pests and sewer and septic smells out. Scott Preller is the owner of Green Organics Pest Control, in Phoenix. For more information, visit GreenOrganicsPest. com. See ad on page 40.

Jeffrey Smith Warns Against GMOs by Linda Sechrist
J
effrey Smith is the founder and executive director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, author of Seeds of Deception and director of the documentary Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives. Smith and his organization’s Campaign for Healthier Eating in America are spearheading consumer rejection of genetically modified foods (GM/ GMO) in order to force them off the market.
What basics should everyone know about GMOs? Genetic engineering is different from traditional crossbreeding. In engineering six major GMO crops—soy, corn, cotton, canola, sugar beets and alfalfa—a gene from a virus or bacteria was forced into the DNA of the plants. Derivatives such as soy lecithin, soy protein, highfructose corn syrup and sugar (unless
How did GMO foods invade grocery shelves? Many U.S. consumers mistakenly believe that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves GMO crops only after careful study. Instead, the agency claimed it wasn’t aware of any significant difference from other food crops and declared safety testing unnecessary. In reality, according to FDA documents later made public in a lawsuit, the consensus among FDA scientists was that GMOs were different and dangerous and needed rigorous, long-term testing to prevent allergies, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems. When the George W. Bush administration ordered the agency to promote biotechnology as a way to increase U.S. food exports, the FDA responded by creating a new position of Deputy Commissioner of Policy for Michael R. Taylor, a former Monsanto attorney. He later became a Monsanto vice president and is now back at the FDA as the U.S. food safety czar.
Why is Roundup, Monsanto’s weed killer for GMO crops, so toxic? Monsanto portrays Roundup as a benevolent herbicide. This is a lie. Glyphosate, its active patented ingredient, alters biochemical pathways in the body. Scientists such as Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff have linked glyphosate to numerous diseases and disorders, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, gluten sensitivity, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, autism and reproductive disorders. In March, the World Health Organization declared it a probable carcinogen.
How can we avoid unlabeled GMO foods? Eat organic foods, which are not allowed to contain GM ingredients, or products that are labeled non-GMO, or those that don’t contain derivatives of the current nine GMO food crops, which now include some zucchini, 42

yellow squash and papaya grown in Hawaii or China. Any packaged grocery product not labeled “Non-GMO” or “Organic” is likely to contain at least one GMO; this includes meat and dairy products, from animals that have eaten GM feed. NonGMOShoppingGuide. com is a reliable resource that lists about 30,000 non-GMO products. A non-GMO diet is recommended by thousands of doctors, as well as the American Academy of Environmental Medicine.
What more can “we the people” do to eradicate GMOs? We are in control, not government agencies. I believe that promoting a stronger message—that GMOs are dangerous and should be avoided— would better serve consumers and the food-labeling movement. High-profile campaigns will continue educating consumers about the dangers of GMOs and the necessity of rejecting them in favor of healthier non-GMO choices, especially for children that are most at risk. The desired result is that food companies will feel the loss of profits and remove GMOs as a liability. The tipping point in the U.S. is almost here. In 2013, the president of Whole Foods announced that when a product becomes verified as non-GMO, sales leap by 15 to 30 percent. Thousands of natural product brands were immediately enrolled for verification. Now conventional brands such as Post Foods’ Grape Nuts, Target’s Simply Balanced brand, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and Chipotle’s restaurant menu are GMO-free. General Mills stopped using GMO beet sugar in Cheerios. When the rest of the food industry sees these non-GMO-labeled products increase in sales in conventional supermarkets, they will be forced to eliminate GMOs as well, to protect their market share. Visit ResponsibleTechnology.org and GeneticRouletteMovie.com to educate everyone about the dangers of GMOs. Connect with writer Linda Sechrist at ItsAllAboutWe.com.

An Effective Solution for
Tooth Grinding by Dr. David G. Lewis
B
ruxism, a term used to describe clenching and grinding of the teeth, is very commonly seen among dental patients. Signs of bruxing include wear patterns, gum recession, defects or notches along the gumline, which
is often sensitive, and sometimes face, jaw, head or neck pain. It is not uncommon for patients with advanced signs and symptoms to be totally unaware of their tooth grinding habit. A large percentage of patients treated for temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) are actually suffering from sore muscles caused by bruxing rather than problems in the joints themselves. The most common and effective treatment for bruxism involves placement of grinding appliances, often called splints, mouth guards or night guards, by dentists to separate the teeth and discourage the grinding habit. By far the most effective treatment for clenching/grinding is the use of a relatively new appliance called the NTI Tension Suppression System, a small, hard, non-BPA plastic device that fits snugly over the lower front teeth. Patients commonly report relief of head/neck/face pain, reduced soreness and sensitivity in teeth, ease of use compared with other devices and a more relaxed feeling after a night’s sleep when wearing their NTI. Construction of an NTI appliance requires two simple visits about two weeks apart; impressions are taken and sent to a professional laboratory for fabrication, and then the appliance is placed and adjusted on the second visit. Advantages of the NTI include patient comfort and compliance due to its small size and unique design, which takes advantage of a reflex that prevents pushing too hard on the front teeth, relative ease of fabrication

Mindful Breathing Adds Years to Lifespan by Dominika Gaines
M
indful breathing can reduce symptoms such as fatigue, asthma, digestive issues and chronic pain in the low back, neck and shoulders. Mindful breathing is empowered by inspiration, which has two definitions: the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative; and the drawing in of breath; inhalation. We are likely all familiar with the frightening, panicked sensation of having to hold our breath for too long. The body depends on oxygen to survive; without oxygen, the brain will stop functioning. Given the importance of oxygen, the body has several strategies for breathing and taking in oxygen, some of which are more efficient and healthful than others. Unfortunately, chronic stressors of any sort (being hurried, too many obligations, muscle and joint or nerve pain) can lead the body to live in a panicked state, resulting in shallow breathing. Constant shallow breathing means that the diaphragm, which expands the ribs on inhalation and then presses the air out of the lungs on exhalation, is not working to its full capacity. Likewise, the intercostal muscles that lay like little fingers between each pair of ribs are also not working as effectively. Because the diaphragm and intercostals are not
46

making room for the lungs to expand, the entire rib cage needs to lift, which means that the muscles around the shoulders and neck are likely being held in a constant state of contraction. All that tension, if never fully released, sends a panic signal to the central nervous system. Because the brain’s primary job is to stay alive, it will send pain signals to alert us that something is wrong. To reduce that pain without medication and increase the body’s health, become inspired and pay more attention to the quality and depth of the breath. At Kinesphere for example, the mindful breathing classes are called Breath of Rejuvenation. They are conducted in a safe, nurturing environment guided by movement educators, where clients learn to breathe more deeply and fully, helping to return their body to a state of health and happiness. Classes meet at 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 10:30 a.m. Saturdays. Dominika Gaines is the owner and director of Kinesphere Center for Movement Education, in Phoenix. How Consumers Can
HELP THE BEES by Dr. Harlan Sparer
I
nsects are pests and companies make lots of money exterminating them. Some agricultural and chemical companies have come to the rescue to increase crop yields by providing neonicotinoid seed coatings to seeds in order to kill pests that also eat food. There is an extremely dangerous side effect to this. It can kill bees. Here’s how it works. There is a nerve transmitter in the central nervous system in insects called acetylcholine. All receptors in the insect sensitive to this stop functioning normally after a delayed reaction with a small dose. In bees, this leads to confusion in direction finding the hive and in decreased and incompetent grooming. The neonicotinoids cause them to become infected by bacteria or eaten by mites. This only happens after several days, allowing the insecticide to be carried back to the hive and spread to all of the other individuals in the hive. This phenomenon is known as colony collapse disorder. Hundreds of billions of bees have
died from neonicotinoid poisoning. The U.S. Department of Agriculture noted a shocking 42 percent loss of domesticated honeybees last year. Neonicotinoids are affecting another pollinator, the monarch butterfly. Their direction-finding sense is altered, preventing them from migrating and reproducing. Other beneficial and neutral insects are also affected. Neonicotinoids are now found on virtually every plant as a seed coating in commercially grown flowers, vegetables and fruits. These neonicotinoid “enhanced” vegetables and flowers are unwittingly purchased for personal use in big box stores and nurseries by consumers. We need to stop buying these ubiquitous products and switch to organic seeds, seedlings and plants to insure that we are not part of this mass killing of our vital pollinators. We are part of the problem if we are planting these seeds or eating food that is grown from these seeds. While they apparently cause no direct danger to people, the indirect danger is alarming
and appalling. One-third of our food is pollinated by bees, and losing them would mean the loss of some of our favorite fruits and vegetables. Many people, organizations and government entities use neonicotinoids in the U.S., even though they are banned in many countries. Be on the lookout for the following substances as ingredients: Acetamiprid, Clothianidin, Dinotefuran, Imidacloprid, Nitenpyram, Thiocloprid and Thiamethoxam. Charles Pellegrino wrote a prescient fiction novel in 1998 titled Dust, in which he explored what would happen if all those “insect pests” died. The results would be catastrophic. In short, insects are vital to our food supply as intermediaries, pollinators and food for other life forms. Without them, the ecological balance would be tilted radically out of balance, causing unforeseen damage where it is unsuspected. Personally, we can remove our support for these substances by not consuming them. The more people are aware of this issue, the more likely it is we can continue to enjoy the benefits of pollinators like bees, even if it interferes with big business.
