olunteer. Be the change. Make a difference. Give back to the community. Pay it forward. These are all commonly used phrases that address how each of us can make a difference in our world. I am humbled by the sheer volume of unpaid activities our readers engage in to make our world a better place, whether it’s locally or on a global scale. While it may seem obvious, there is something each of us can do to impact change that surprisingly many of us do not: Vote. Yes, I’ve heard the many reasons why some people choose not to cast their ballot. Yet, unless you’ve been living under a rock, we are in a presidential election year, and the 24-hour news cycle remains perpetually fixated on the presidential election process. The outcome of this election will shape our world for years to come. I am not here to tell you how to vote; but I am making a strong plea to register to vote, if you are not currently registered, and to cast your ballot, at least in the November election. Research the candidates and the propositions and make an educated choice. Why? I personally believe the stakes are too high not to when you consider the presidential candidates, not to mention all of the other elected officials and propositions that will be on the ballot. But it’s also part of our civic duty—and there are many people on this Earth who do not have the freedom to choose. August 1 is the deadline to register to vote for the August 30 primary election in Arizona. October 10 is the deadline for the November 8 general (presidential) election. You can find additional information about the election process and also register to vote by visiting one of the websites below. While you’re at it, sign up to be on the permanent early voting list by mail, which makes the process even easier. he Ease Into Balance Ortho-Bionomy Center will celebrate their grand opening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 16, at 13811 North 35th Drive, Suite D, in Phoenix. They are offering a $69 Grand Opening special for the month of July. Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle way to release pain without invasive procedures or drugs. Jennifer Hallden and Cozy Meyer have been practicing Ortho-Bionomy for a combined total of 18 years. Ortho-Bionomy principles are based on a simple and profound philosophy: allow the body to correct itself. The founder, British-trained osteopath Arthur Lincoln Pauls, discovered how to gently stimulate the body’s reflexes for self-correction in a way that supports a person’s own healing mechanisms. The body is stimulated using gentle movements, comfortable positioning, brief compression and subtle contact. The result is seemingly effortless pain and tension relief, natural realignment, relaxation and a deep sense of well-being. The individual is empowered to participate in their own recovery, and through the process, can begin to rediscover the ability to heal and restore comfort, ease and balance back into their body. For more information, call 602-738-0489, email CozyMeyerLMT@gmail.com or visit EaseIntoBalance.com.

Green Organics Pest Control Uses the Safest Remedies
P
ests like to find shelter indoors from the summer heat, just like we do, and Green Organics Pest Control provides regular pest control services for both residential and commercial customers. Their non-toxic treatments for scorpions, spiders, bees and ants use natural materials that have little to no effect on people, pets or our environment. Some of them are actually food-grade materials; if not labeled for pest control, they could be consumed without consequence. Nature has been doing organic pest control for millions of years through predatory animals and insects, repellent plant life and natural minerals and oils that bugs and other pests naturally avoid. Green Organics uses many of these methods in their service because it just is not necessary to use potentially harmful materials to take care of a problem easily solved by natural materials. These products are so much safer than traditional pesticides that they are exempt from registration with the rigorous standards of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Free quotes. For appointments, call 602-448-1180. For more information, visit GreenOrganicsPest.com. See ad on page 35.

Vanessa Chamberlain
RESTORING CHILDHOOD FOR 21ST CENTURY SUSTAINABILITY by Martin Miron
T
he nonprofit Cultural Wellness & Family Enrichment Center (CWFEC), a holistic community center and living model of cultural wellness, is the brainchild of Vanessa Chamberlain, who founded the organization in 2004 and is its director. It’s a place where individuals and families will, in the future, come to experience and enjoy connectedness, health, wellness and harmony in community. Today, CWFEC offers classes and educational programs that espouse the restoration of childhood, community and nature connections. She says, “We are living in a time during which there is little delineation between childhood and adulthood. Parents and educators report feeling overwhelmed when attempting to instill familial values and educational norms in a culture that doesn’t appear to support what is healthy for children. Thirty years ago, childhood was protected by the community at large, and children were free to be children. Children often engaged in three or more hours of unstructured outdoor play on average. Today’s youth instead now spends a stunning amount of time multitasking on various media devices. Arizona is facing a Youth Disconnection Crisis, yet many are unaware that the roots 20

of it are tied to our 21st-century lifestyle.” In response, CWFEC is launching a major public awareness campaign, called Let’s Get WILD Arizona! Beginning this August, parents, educators, community leaders and advocates can attend an adult workshop series and public events to learn more about restoring childhood. A free introduction to the campaign will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., July 28, at North Mountain Visitor Center. On WILD Wednesdays, local restaurants will be donating proceeds to support Wild World Education’s A River Runs Through Arizona Spring Break Adventure, a flagship project for 15-to-17-year-olds, designed by CWFEC’s Tamara Hendrix and Chamberlain, and sponsored project of Ironwood Tree Experience. Taking place March 3-10, 2017, this naturebased educational experience promises to promote the physical, social/emotional, intellectual and spiritual health of our youth; expand youth engagement and connection; and increase intra/interpersonal and regional relationships. The spring break adventure offers a fun, hands-on educational experience that helps teens form connections between the river and all inhabitants of the Sonoran Desert. Wild World educators guide youth as they explore meaningful areas of the Salt River and Superstition Mountains. The journey provides “living” opportunities for youth to relax, play and enjoy outdoor experiences that naturally promote engaged learning. Campaign sponsors include: Ironwood Tree Experience, North Mountain Visitor Center, Save Our Mountains Foundation, Whole Foods Market, Pomegranate Café and Indigo Cultural Center. Free Let’s Get WILD intro location: 12950 N. 7th St., Phoenix. For more information, call 602-432-3707 or visit CulturalWellness.org.

Begin Within Family Wellness Relieves Back and Neck Pain by Martin Miron
B
egin Within Family Wellness, in Scottsdale, provides treatment for neck and back pain, migraines, insomnia and inner ear problems. Kyle Collins, DC, says, “Upper cervical care has an incredible success rate against neck and back pain. We have seen many patients find relief and complete resolution of their migraines allowing them to eliminate medications. Patients suffering from vertigo, dizziness, inner ear disorders and Meniere’s disease have seen great success with upper cervical care.” His motivation to take up a medical career began in 7:41 AMchildhood. “I had terrible acid reflux and gastrointestinal problems when I was younger,” says Collins. “My family took me to a chiropractor, and I got better. I thought, ‘This is exactly what I want to do for the rest of my life!’ I also felt that there were a lot of people struggling just like me, and had been told they were going to have to take medicine for the rest of their life. I knew I needed to help those people.” Collins graduated from Arizona State University and received his doctorate from the Life Chiropractic College West, in California, before continuing his education in upper cervical care. “When I was in school, I wanted to be a sports chiropractor, but the more I studied and really learned the spine, I found that the most unstable portion in the spine is the upper cervical region,” he states. “It’s the only freely movable portion of the spine and is very susceptible to misalignment. Once we misalign the upper cervical region, it begins to affect the brain
stem and other neurological structures that reside at that level.” Collins elaborates, “The brainstem controls every automatic function and response in the body, such as sleep, digestion, blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, balance and equilibrium and more. When the brain stem and the body are able to communicate with each other freely, you are able to live life to its fullest.” Begin Within utilizes the most precise form of chiropractic care, called knee chest upper cervical specific. This technique focuses on removing the interference in the upper part of the neck where the brain stem sits. Collins says, “Our purpose is to help you achieve your wellness goals with as few adjustments as possible.” Begin Within Family Wellness is located at 7120 E. Indian School Rd., in Scottsdale. For appointments, call 480-699-3086. For more information, visit BeginWithinScottsdale.com. See ad on page 5.

Kick Stress to the Curb
USING MINDFULNESS by Julie Lemerond
S
tress shows up in everyone’s life, and whether we are 8 or 80, the world is moving at an increasingly accelerated pace and we are all along for the ride. We can’t slow down the world, but we can slow down our inner world. Making inner peace our priority is just a matter of choosing to do so. One of the core concepts of mindfulness is to be present, or fully engaged, in each moment. While it may seem impossible to be fully present in each moment of each day, we can notice when we are not present and make a conscious decision to reel our mind back in to the here and now. One of the easiest ways to bring an overloaded mind that is focused on the future or past into the present is to simply take a deep breath—then take another deep breath—and notice what it feels like in the body to focus on our breath. We usually practice shallow breathing, and this exercise brings the realization of what deep breathing can do.
Once we feel the breath moving in and out, we can tune in to how our body is feeling, as well. Our heart may be fluttering with anxiousness about an upcoming event; our muscles tense, our brow furrowing or jaw clenching without our being aware of it. Our posture, too, can elevate us or drain our energy. In addition to practicing being present, we can be open and willing to make some gentle changes in our response to everything life throws at us. We have all grown accustomed

to our “need it now” culture, and just as we are used to getting things in the blink of an eye, like downloading a song, we also feel like we should respond to everything life is throwing at us immediately, if not sooner. Try turning off the phone at night an hour before bed. Choose to respond to emails when it is convenient. Take a break from social media for a week and dedicate that time to reading a book instead. Do at least one thing every day that we absolutely love, like cooking a meal, taking a bath, listening to music or watching our favorite sitcom, and allow ourselves to be fully present in each moment. Make a decision every morning to go out into the world with a compassionate heart, knowing that each time we are challenged throughout our day it is just a tool for us to take the reins of our own sense of inner peace and calm. Remember that stress is always surrounding us, but it is in how we choose to deal with it that determines its effect on us. is critical—not only to the foods we feed, but to the treats we give.” Twelve years ago, Rick Woodford’s Belgian Malinois/Labrador mix, Jackson, was diagnosed with lymphoma. In order to keep him eating, Woodford shared his own food. Jackson lived an additional four years, in part due to improved nutrition. “Portion control is important,” he says. “What’s right for an 80-pound dog is way too much for a 30-pounder.” Woodford, the author of Feed Your Best Friend Better and Chow, lives near Portland, Oregon. Frosty Paws is a lower lactose version of ice cream for dogs and discriminating cats. Recipes for homemade versions can be found online. The basics are one ripe, mashed banana, 32 ounces of plain or vanilla yogurt and two tablespoons of honey, all mixed in a blender and frozen in small ice cube trays. Variations may substitute goat’s milk yogurt or add a quarter-cup of strawberries, cranberries or blueberries for antioxidants in lieu of the honey. Frozen vegetable broth, primed with added bits of cooked chopped spinach, broccoli, carrots or a small cheese cube, is a hit with dogs. Cats like theirs with tidbits of chicken, turkey or a few shreds of cheese. Using a bone-shaped ice cube tray lets humans know it’s the pet’s treat. “When I was developing frozen treat recipes, my husband came in from the yard one hot afternoon and went straight to the freezer,” says Paris Permenter about John Bigley, co-authors of The Healthy Hound Cookbook, in Cedar Park, Texas, who live with mixed breeds Irie and Tiki. “I watched him eat two helpings of the dog ice cream and then told him what it was. We often share our food with our dogs. It was nice for them to share their goodies with us!” The bottom line for the best summertime treats is to go healthy, be creative, use fresh ingredients, don’t overindulge and stay cool. Ingredients to Avoid Avoid peanut and other nut butters or any ingredient with xylitol, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, coffee and caffeine, onions, chives, garlic, nuts and salty snack foods. Chocolate is also on the no-go list; the darker the chocolate, the worse it is for pets; baking chocolate is the most dangerous. Tips for Healthier Connections with Pets by Andrea Sobotka
T
he loving pet parents of any kind of animal will attest that they have a special connection. Just by being close to us, our pets naturally make us feel good, which is proven to improve our physical and mental health. In return, our critters also feed off the natural energies we emit; so we each have a vested interest in the other being healthy, happy and well adjusted. We would be wise to pay just as much attention to the whole body, mind and spirit health of our critters as we do for ourselves. Here are six things we can do to establish a holistic daily care regimen for ourselves and our pets. Understand a pet’s breed and what level of space, activity and social interactions they are best-suited for and commit to honoring that information. Also consider their estimated lifespan. Provide daily mental and physical stimulation through breed- and ageappropriate exercise, training, play and enrichment activities. Learning, fitness and fun is not just for the young.

food manufacturers use ingredients that are deemed unfit for human consumption. Suggested reading includes Food Pets Die For, by Ann N. Martin. Take time out to meditate, practice yoga or even just sit quietly out in nature for a few minutes each day to calm and clear the mind. Invite pets to share in this practice by having them right there, setting the intention that this is for their benefit, too. They will love this connection and so will we. Consider providing pets with regular holistic and/or energy balancing treatments. If they begin to show even the slightest signs of stress or disease, sometimes this alone can stop something from getting out of hand. A balanced energy system strengthens the physical body.
Include pets in quality family/social time away from a screen. Be respectful of their space and comfort zones, especially where children, other animals and meeting new friends are concerned. Feed pets a diet that is as close to their wild counterparts’ natural diet as possible, avoiding highly processed food and treats. Their bodies are no more adapted to thrive on kibble than ours is; probably even less so. Whether homemade or store-bought, lightly cooked or raw, feed the pet organic, non-GMO (human grade) whole foods as much as possible. Mainstream pet
Our pets deserve to have the healthiest, happiest life possible, and so do we. Make the best of every day that we have with our beloved pet. Their lifespan is generally much shorter than ours, but through love, healthy living and honoring our energetic connections, the quality of that time spent can leave us with a lifetime of joyful memories of our best friends. n Farmers and processors must keep detailed records of practices. n Farmers are required to maintain a written organic management plan.
Certified Humane
Locavore Lingo What All the Food Labels Really Mean by Judith Fertig
L
ocally grown foods are more likely to have been bred for flavor and nutrition than durability and a long shelf life, says Emily Akins, outreach director for the Kansas City Food Circle, a cooperative that links residents with farmers that grow and raise organic and free-range food. An added benefit is getting to know the farmer and being able to ask the questions—and receive the answers—that are important to us. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that local food sales totaled $12 billion in 2014, up from $5 billion in 2008. They continue to grow.
Organic or Certified Organic Consumers want to know the difference between organics and certified organics. Today’s number of U.S. certified organic operations has jumped nearly 300 percent since 2002 to more than 21,700. 32

Although a certified organic designation might be the preferred index of how foods are grown and raised, it is not always possible for certain foods in some climates. Sometimes there’s a tradeoff in buying organic foods in the carbon footprint of its transport to market. According to the Sweetwater Organic Community Farm, in Tampa, Florida, “Organic refers to a specific method of growing and processing foods, and is defined as produce grown, packaged and stored without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or irradiation.” To be considered certified organic under the Code of Federal Regulations 7 CFR Part 205, products must meet these standards: n No harmful chemicals have been applied to the land for at least three years. n Farmers and processors are inspected annually by a certifying agency.
When we buy local cheese, poultry or meat at the farmers’ market, we sometimes see a certified humane notice. One such producer is Baetje Farms, outside St. Louis, Missouri. Their highly regarded goat cheeses offer traceability via a lot number, so buyers can know exactly which milking the cheese came from. In factory farming, which often involves penning or caging animals that never go outdoors, “certified humane” means that this producer meets Humane Farm Animal Care standards: n Fed a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones. n Provided proper shelter with resting areas and sufficient space. n Animals have to ability to behave naturally. Veronica Baetje says her farm’s goats receive organic mineral supplements and locally grown alfalfa hay in addition to pasture grass every day. She adds, “They are free to choose what they prefer to do, whether skip and run up a hill, lie under the shade of a tree, soak up some sunshine or play with their herd mates.”
Wild Food At times, farmers’ markets will offer foraged foods from the wild or wild game. Sources are listed online at EatWild.com. “Few of us will go back to foraging in the wild, but we can learn to forage in our supermarkets, farmers’ markets and from local farmers to select the most nutritious and delicious foods available,” says founder Jo Robinson, in Vashon, Washington. For example, Dave and Sue Whittlesey, at High Wire Ranch, in Hotchkiss, Colorado, raise bison (buffalo) and elk that they sell both through local stores and at the Aspen Saturday Market. The wild game is 100 percent
pasture-fed, non-GMO (no genetically modified feed), gluten-free and not given hormones or any antibiotics unless the animal is sick.
Healthy Foods Lexicon
Trusted Sources The land, climate and growing season dictate the best natural farming practices for each area, often described along with their products on farm and farmers’ market websites. Wisconsin’s Dane County Farmers’ Market, in Madison, provides detailed descriptions of farm products and agricultural practices so customers can make informed choices. Sometimes, the type of farm makes a difference. “We are intentionally human scale,” says Virginia Goeke, of Sylvan Meadows Farm, in Viroqua, Wisconsin. “We choose to husband our land to promote harmony and synergy. We are creating a sustainable farm ecosystem where herbal meadows, prairies, heirloom gardens, orchards, woodlands, and rare breeds of livestock and wildlife flourish.” Sometimes, we’d just like someone else to do the food curating for us. The Kansas City Food Circle requires member farmers to take a pledge to follow certain agricultural practices. “When you buy food from our members, you can rely on the co-op’s pledge that it’s been certified naturally grown or that the farmer has USDA Organic certification,” says Akins. Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, the joint effort of 100 small-scale family farms providing fresh, organic, seasonal produce, in Leola, Pennsylvania, gives similar assurances. The USDA reports that 160,000 farmers nationwide are currently selling to their local markets via farmers’ markets, community supported agriculture organizations, restaurants, groceries and institutions, generating health, social, economic and environmental benefits for local communities. It keeps growing because we keep asking questions.
Heritage breeds—Ancestral breeds of poultry and livestock that often take longer to reach market weight, but have more flavor.
Foraged—Native foods gathered from the wild, rather than cultivated. Examples: wild mushrooms, fiddlehead ferns, mulberries, native pecans, black walnuts and native persimmons. Free range—Poultry raised outdoors where they are free to range over natural vegetation. Grass-fed—Beef or milk cows fed on grass. The benefit is leaner, betterflavored meat and more omega-3s, plus fuller flavors in milk, butter and other dairy products. Heirloom—Older, non-hybrid varieties of produce, including fruit trees, herbs and vegetables.
Local—Grown or raised within a three-hour driving radius of the consumer’s purchase site. Pastured—Livestock raised on pastures instead of factory farms. Traceability—Precise tracking by a farmer that informs the consumer of which chicken hatched a specific clutch of eggs, which farm grew a cantaloupe and which mill boiled down and bottled the sorghum syrup. Wild-caught—Fish that live and are caught in open lakes, streams or oceans. For more current agricultural, market and trade terms, visit LexiconOfSustainability.com.

SOIL SISTERS Female Farmers Come of Age by Lisa Kivirist
M
ore women are becoming farmers, bringing with them a passion for producing organic and sustainably raised fare and transforming America’s food system. The U.S. Census of Agriculture reports that their numbers rose by more than 20 percent between 2002 and 2012, to 288,264.
Historic Roots
“Women have played an integral role in farming for centuries, but in the last 100 years they’ve started to self-organize and be recognized for their important work,” says University of California garden historian Rose Hayden-Smith, Ph.D., author of Sowing the Seeds of Victory: American Gardening Programs of World War I and editor of the UC Food Observer. “During that war, the Women’s Land Army of America, a female-led initiative, recruited nearly 34

20,000 mostly middle-class urban and suburban women to enter the agricultural sector as wage laborers at farms, dairies and canneries, often in rural areas, where farmers urgently needed help while the male labor force was off fighting.” Women also helped feed Americans during the Victory Garden era of World War II. “It’s also estimated that more than 40 percent of fruits and vegetables consumed on the American home front then were grown in school, home, community and workplace gardens,” says HaydenSmith, possibly resulting in America’s highest period of produce consumption ever. When the commercial organic industry launched in the 1990s, women organized to provide overlooked and undervalued perspectives. The wake-up call for Denise O’Brien, an organic vegetable
farmer and owner of Rolling Hills Acres, near Atlantic, Iowa, came during the farm economic crisis of the preceding decade. Although still considered “just” farm wives, “It was the women on the farms that had foreseen where things were heading, because they often kept the accounting books, though nobody took their voices seriously,” O’Brien recalls. This launched O’Brien’s agriculture activism: balancing farming, raising children and serving as a national advocate and spokeswoman for women in agriculture in an ecological and just food system. In 1997, she launched the Women, Food and Ag Network to collectively advocate for a stronger voice. “Throughout history, women in agriculture have been relegated to providing assistance, rather than making decisions,” O’Brien explains. “It’s up to us as women to collaboratively support each other while challenging the system.”
Cultivating Change
For her 50th birthday, Paula Foreman gave her life a new chapter. She launched her midlife “second act” in 2007 with Encore Farm, a name that serves as a rallying mantra for her peers. “The name is a tribute declaring that fresh starts and new beginnings can happen at any age,” explains Foreman, now an urban farmer in St. Paul, Minnesota. Embodying this business moxie, she chose to specialize, producing one thing very well: organic dried beans. Relinda Walker, of Walker Organic Farms, outside Savannah, Georgia, represents a cadre of “boomerang” farmers; women that return to the land to continue a family farm with a commitment to organics. Like many farm kids, after college, Walker left to pursue a corporate career in the city. Then the 9/11 terror attack shifted her priorities. “All roads led me to coming back home and growing food,” she says. Launched in 2005, Walker’s farm was one of southern Georgia’s first organic operations, yielding specialty varieties like rainbow carrots in vivid shades of purple, orange and red.
Future Femme Power
Young women in their 20s and 30s are adding energy, diversity, vibrancy and fresh outlooks to the female farming movement. Lindsey Morris Carpenter runs Grassroots Farm, in Monroe, Wisconsin, a diversified operation of certified organic vegetables and pastured livestock, in partnership with her mother, Gail Carpenter. “A crucial key to farming happiness is being a good neighbor,” she shares. “I call around when I see livestock and pets outside of fences; maintain my fences; share my garlic and potato seed; and always invite neighbors to parties and events, even though they may not attend. Even if others’ personal lifestyle and farming philosophies are radical opposites, we still have our physical location and appreciation of nature in common, and that’s big.” “The women farmer movement is just a toddler,” sums up O’Brien. “We’ve come a long way, but we’re not there yet, especially with representation on the national leadership platform.” It’s easy to support female growers at local farmers’ markets. Cultivating change can be rewarding—and tasty. Lisa Kivirist is the author of the new book Soil Sisters: A Toolkit for Women Farmers and a senior fellow at the University of Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture. Her family runs the energy-independent Inn Serendipity Farm and B&B, in southwestern Wisconsin.

anna Anderson started Pinnacle Farms in 2011 with seven acres she purchased as a Phoenix homesite abandoned after the 2008 recession that was originally part of a citrus orchard in the 1930s. Now she grows peaches and the farm arm has grown to 47 acres total. “I have planted over 800 trees on the property, mostly stone fruit, but also citrus, and there is an acre of land for the heritage grains project nursery,” says Anderson. “I also lease a 40-acre parcel in Waddell where I grow heritage grains and vegetables on a larger scale. I became certified organic in 2015 after years of following the organic principles, but not wanting to add to the expense or my paperwork burden.” “There is something really special about the daily walks through the farm to inspect the progress and plan the following week. Just last week, I harvested some beautiful rare Navajo Red Watermelons and it’s so gratifying to know you have participated in preserving the diversity of the food system by helping to provide the seed for people and discussion as to why it should be preserved. “As the orchard grows, it is becoming my favored place, not only for the shade, but because of all the work invested and how successful being a peach farmer has been so far! FARMERS’ MARKETS from their childhood over and over is biting into a juicy yard peach! “There is a serious learning curve to being an orchardist or vegetable farmer. Without a farming background, I didn’t have family to turn to when faced with learning how to do something. Many of the long-term farmers have a recipe for success handed down to them over the years, and that experience makes them immediately successful. My success comes by trial and error, and the path is long and fraught with failures at times, too. “My biggest reward comes from the appreciation and fascination that people have when I say I am a farmer. As we all know, the patriarchal vision of farming is what we have been accustomed to, but the truth is women have been in farming for a very long time, just overshadowed by their husbands or family.”

Organic Food is About More Than Pesticides by Dr. Katka Novakova
T
he benefits of organic produce as a way to avoid toxic pesticides, herbicides and fungicides that are applied to food crops are well known, as well as which conventional fruits and vegetables carry the most toxic residues, such as peaches, apples, pears, winter squash, green beans, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, spinach and potatoes, to name a few. Although studies have shown that organic food contains up to 50 percent more nutrients than its nonorganic counterpart, there are even more reasons to choose organic. Cold pasteurization is the irradiation of food with very high doses of X-rays and gamma rays in order to destroy microorganisms, delay ripening of fruits and vegetables and extend shelf life. Researchers at the University of Illinois, the Medical College of Virginia, San Diego State College and Ralston Purina have found animals fed irradiated foods suffered premature death, internal bleeding, cancer, reproductive and genetic problems and

nutritional deficiencies. Another cause for concern is the genetic modification of foods. While many countries world-wide have banned the use of GMO foods, the American public has been unwittingly consuming them for more than 10 years because of the absence of mandatory labeling. There is a lack of long-term research to determine the potential danger in consuming the abundance of genetically altered foods on the market. For instance, most corn, soy, canola, cotton, potatoes and rice has been genetically modified. Upon examining labels, we will notice that these GMO foods and
their derivatives, such as cottonseed oil, lecithin, soy protein, soy oil, soy sauce, tofu, high-fructose corn syrup, food starch, bran, dextrose, maltodextrine, manitol, sorbitol and alcohol form the majority of many prepared and processed foods. There are ways to protect ourselves. Irradiated foods, for example, must have a special symbol on the label known as the radura. Because GMO food, however, is still not subject to labeling by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the only way to be sure our food is safe is to buy organic produce from certified growers or local farmers that we trust. By buying organic, we are not only getting irradiation-, GMO-, pesticide- and herbicide-free produce, we are also supporting organic farming/ agriculture and the healthy ecosystem of our planet. Products that are labeled as Certified Organic have been documented to avoid all these detrimental pitfalls and are currently the gold standard for clean, unadulterated food. QIGONG FOR VETERANS Why Do They Love Getting High? by Todd Nichols Todd Nichols has actively shared Qigong and Power Breathing at veterans’ facilities for five years with outstanding results. Anger and alcoholism are the norm for veterans, and Todd is breaking through by getting them high naturally. Additionally, Todd shares Qigong at several drug rehab centers and even with Baker Act patients. His insights as a Heroic Qigong teacher are profound.
N
o mistake in life has troubled me more than not serving in the military. After missing that opportunity, I am sharing Qigong at the Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals. The biggest challenge in teaching veterans Qigong is to gain their trust. An individual who never wore their uniform cannot understand what they endured. Veterans immediately want to know if you’re one of them. In the beginning this was unnerving. VAs are tough facilities. I’ll never forget my first time teaching and being let in the locked door and it quickly shutting behind me. One veteran in a wheel chair was trying to escape. Chairs were full of sand so they couldn’t be thrown. Doctors and social workers were coming in during my class and interrupting. Many veterans were medicated and dealing with
obvious challenges. Some appeared physically fine, but their mind waged an emotional war inside. One large man was sitting in a state of shock and sat staring straight ahead making a low pitched sound. Direct exposure to mental health struggles of veterans has enlightened me. Most Americans are unaware that 22 U.S. veterans commit suicide each day. I hope my experiences help tutor other Qigong instructors. “One of the best things to happen to me was to be sentenced to a 6-month drug rehab center where Mr. Todd literally was breathing new life into us.” - Timothy Stewart, U.S. Veteran. When veterans do Qigong breathing in a group, trust issues and whether I’m a veteran or not becomes less important. Old mind patterns are temporarily bypassed as the FEELING OF QI is so strong that it gives a natural high. Many veterans report this has been in-
Recovering heroin addicts need a powerful approach and I quickly realized I needed to wow them immediately with Qigong! To make a memorable, quick and powerful statement, my grand slam is the Breath-Empowerment and the 9-Breath Method exercises as this group of people is challenging to gain trust. They are guarded and apprehensive. I draw them in and challenge them to take huge breaths, swallow it and hold it in their belly. A crammed room becomes momentarily silent, smiles and then scattered giggles. I love to see students’ resistance turn to wonder. They tell me, “Wow, I feel electricity, and my body is warm and tingling”. Without the breathing tools, many would give up before benefiting from the immense healing rewards. Teaching Qigong at the VA was not very respected in the beginning. Now it has grown from a single class to two classes each week. The doctors, nurses and social workers now respect the group and do not disturb our class! Qigong at Westcare has been received so well that it has grown from one to three classes every week. It is now a part of their curriculum. There is no doubt in my mind that the need for more instructors in this field of Qigong is a must.

Using Diet to Prevent Skin Cancer by Dr. Paul Stallone

ust as food gives us life, it can also take it away. Diabetes, cancer, joint pain, obesity, heart disease and allergies can be encouraged by eating the wrong foods. A better diet can be customized for amazing potential. The summer months remind us of the dangers of skin cancer. While some sun exposure is essential for head-to-toe good health, too much can lead to DNA damage. The sun’s ultraviolet radiation can harm skin cells, which then release oxygen molecules known as free radicals. These free radicals can hurt our genetic material in a way that skin cancer is formed. Free radicals wreak absolute havoc on one’s body and are responsible for much more than skin cancer.

Consuming several servings of cruciferous (broccoli and kale) and dark leafy (spinach and collard greens) vegetables each day, along with citrus, can provide antioxidants that include polyphenols, carotenoids and other bioactive substances that may decrease the risk for melanoma. Organic fruits and vegetables are best whenever possible. When skin is damaged by the sun, new blood vessels grow in a process called angiogenesis, and cancer cells can hijack them to sustain themselves. Anti-angiogenesis foods can assist in starving cancer cells, stopping them from growing and spreading. Omega-3 fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel and trout are a great source for anti-angiogenesis benefits. A 2009 study published study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found people that ate just one serving of these fish every five days developed 28 percent fewer actinic keratoses, a scaly precancerous skin growth. These fish should be wild caught, as farmed fish can contain dyes, chemicals, antibiotics and PCB, a carcinogen for humans and animals. Fresh herbs can add not only flavor to many dishes, but also antioxidants. Each has different properties, so eating a variety can enable more antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits. Herbs provide immune support, better wound recovery, improved brain function and nausea relief. Creating a home herb garden ensures a read-

Black and green teas are full of polyphenol antioxidants that may inhibit the proteins necessary for skin cancer to develop and help scavenge free radicals throughout the body. Tea is a healthier choice for a caffeine boost than coffee because it isn’t as acidic. A glass of wine contains components such as catechins and resveratrol that may inhibit the growth of some human cancer cells. Eating to prevent disease and slow aging is a great way to think about food. Food gives us life, and something that important should be given much thought and consideration. Every single thing we eat will either fight or feed disease. Some people might need a little more support than what food can supply. Having a knowledgeable physician customize a preventative treatment plan can allow for the appropriate recommendations. Foods and supplements are not universal or one-size-fits-all remedies. A trained physician can recommend specific foods for individual needs and perform treatments like IV therapies and homeopathics, and conduct testing to pinpoint food sensitivities. This physician could also assist with an alternative treatment for cancer. Many skin cancers respond very well to naturopathic treatment. During any stage of cancer, nutrition and guidance are extremely important. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, but with the right tools and nutrition, it can be prevented and treated. Paul Stallone, NMD, founded the Arizona Integrative Medical Center, located at 8144 E. Cactus Rd., Ste. 820, in Scottsdale. He combines natural/ alternative/conventional treatments to best fit and benefit each individual patient’s needs. For more information, call 480-214-3922 or visit DrStallone. com. CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF SPIRIT GUIDES by BakeR Gendron
G
uides, angels, fairies, spirit guides and/or animal helpers are “real” to some people. If they disappear, it is most likely our own fault. To maintain their beneficial presence, we must make time to sit in quiet; regularly check in with them; ask them to come along when we’re having fun, not just call on them when we’re in trouble; make time for our guides like we would a good friend; and practice working with our guides like we would practice a sport. We must practice, practice, practice and connect, connect, connect, along with creating time to spend with our guides. Like a relationship with a good friend, which they are, we must nurture that relationship. The more we connect with them, the more we
will learn from them and the easier it will be to connect. If we can carve out time for a Starbucks coffee or watch the latest series on Netflix, we can make time to work with our guides and find 10 minutes or more a day to just sit in quiet and invite them in. We can create a sacred space like a small altar with candles, crystals, rocks, feathers, icons and any items that help us create the mood to sit quietly and connect. It might just be a special chair in the corner by a sunny window. This is where we sit when our intention is to connect with spirits, guides, animal totems, fairies or angels. It is our own private vortex where the energy feels right. Our guides are friends, so we should treat them as such; calling on
them in good times and bad. We can send gratitude for the light they bring to our life; ask them to intervene, play the muse, walk with us, laugh and create. They don’t always generate big, flashy fireworks, loud voices or a knock on the head. Their presence is usually more like a chill up our spine, hair-raising goose bumps on our arms, a quiet voice whispering, “Why don’t you try that path?”, or a friend calling at exactly the moment we thought of them. We need to check our ego at the door, open up and listen. The ego is usually coming from a position of fear, so it will create doubt when we hear, sense or see something that seems off or strange. We might get a very clear message, but our ego decides it couldn’t possibly be right, so it shuts us down. If we truly want to work with our guides, we must remember that it’s a relationship to be nurtured— show up, spend time together, honor the sacredness and listen. Get Fast Relief From Difficult Skin Conditions DermaClear Stops Itching Pain and Embarrassment
H
arness the timeless healing power of calcium montmorillonite/ calcium bentonite clay to relieve the discomfort of shingles, psoriasis, eczema, itchy allergic rash, poison ivy, jock itch, insect bites and stings, first-degree burns and scalds and more. All-natural Natural Awakenings DermaClear stops itching within seconds. Shingles sufferers say they are able to sleep for the first time in days or weeks. DermaClear eliminates crusty, white psoriasis and starts restoring the skin within just a few days of daily use. DermaClear draws out and dries up discharges in rashes, soothes, cools, speeds healing, reduces scarring and helps prevent neuropathy (nerve pain).
Secret Ingredient is How it Works
Natural Awakenings DermaClear contains a proprietary blend of homeopathic remedies to combat trauma, rash, pain, itching, scarring and nerve damage in a carrier base of calcium bentonite clay, used all over the world for centuries. Cooling and soothing, the clay penetrates pores and other open areas of the skin and pulls out toxins and inflammation. The homeopathic ingredients address the root causes, speed up the healing and help bring even deeper toxins to the surface for the clay to pull out.
For Best Results
Apply concentrated DermaClear to affected areas once a day or as needed. It can be thinned with water for a lighter, invisible consistency. Do not cover or bandage the area; clothing may be worn when dry. Conditions usually improve in just a few days and the soothing, cooling effect is felt immediately. There is no expiration date, just add water and stir to refresh.
Natural Awakenings DermaClear is the perfect resource to try after people have turned to conventional medical treatments that failed, – but because DermaClear is so inexpensive, free of side effects and drug interactions and easy to apply, why not try it first?
