E

ndings. Change. The unknown. What is it about these things that, in some, incites fear? At the same time, in others, the seeds of hope and expansion? The point with which I started today’s official ending happened longer before, but let’s start with May 2015. In the same week, I ended a lot—a marriage of 10 years, graduate school, and living in a small city in Arizona. With my one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter in tow, I moved from Tucson to Mesa, not knowing what I was going to do next or what was going to happen. What I did know is that it had to be better than what I’d just been through. As a career English teacher, it was easy for me to transfer to another school and I was especially eager to end the early days of my career and put them far behind me. Faced with this new ending, I went inward and prayed. At my local natural food store, I picked up my first issue of Natural Awakenings and made a decision. I would consciously end the enduring pain I felt. I spent the summer ending my anger, frustration, sadness, and all the other negative emotions that come along with major change—especially fear. By the end of the summer, with newfound knowledge gained from the articles I read, I started a new focus—beginning. I began eating healthier, exercising more effectively, and deepening my spiritual practices while learning about plant medicine, acupressure, qigong, healthy parenting, and more. I grew more positive about the life I could lead, with every monthly issue of Natural Awakenings in hand. Here, in May 2020, I am with you, experiencing today’s official ending. Just before this writing, I cleaned out my classroom, turned off the lights, closed the door, and said goodbye to a career that I poured every fiber of my being into for over a decade. Again, at this time, it is important to focus on not what is ending but beginning. Answering the higher calling to respond to the Natural Awakenings San Diego ad I saw in my local edition, I am now the magazine’s Marketing Consultant. Little did I know this publication that had helped transform my life—with a team that is loveable, hardworking and supportive—would play such an integral role in my fresh new start. Just as it has been with my hundreds of students over the years, I look forward to this new beginning with you, my new Natural Awakenings family. I look forward to connecting with you, our dear readers and advertisers, and forming wonderful, long lasting relationships. I am eager to discover all the exciting ways I can help foster meaningful change while leaving a positive impact on the San Diego scene. Just as a forest fire makes way for fresh growth, what is no longer needed is falling away from our lives. I call on all of us to look within and focus on what is beginning in the midst of this crisis. None of us know where we are going, but we’re on our way. With deepest gratitude,

Exercise to Boost Sperm Quality A new Harvard study of 746 young sperm donors reports that men that exercise more have better sperm quality. The men, with an average age of 26, at least a high school education and no radiation exposure or sexually transmitted diseases, were qualified to donate to a sperm bank in their area. Compared to men that seldom exercised, those that reported the most total exercise and logged the most time doing intense workouts had better sperm motility, which increases the chances for sperm to move through the female reproductive tract to reach an egg.

Take Quercetin to Reduce Blood Pressure Supplementation with quercetin, a plant pigment found in capers, cilantro, fennel, onions, red leaf lettuce, watercress, elderberries, asparagus, kale, cocoa, apples and chia seeds, can significantly reduce both diastolic and systolic blood pressure, lowering each by about three milliliters/Hg, reports a new review of research published in the Oxford Academic Journal, of 17 clinical studies that tested 896 participants. Quercetin also improved HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels when consumed for eight weeks or more.

Consume Date Vinegar to Boost Heart Health and Reduce Inflammation In a study of 76 people with mildly high total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, research published in the Journal of Herbal Medicine found that consuming 30 milliliters of vinegar made from date pulp and pits daily for four weeks significantly improved total cholesterol, LDL, triglyceride and HDL levels, as well as several biomarkers of inflammation. Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacies Break the Mold of the Typical Pharmacy by Erin Lehn

A

hmed Eldahmy, PharmD, founder of Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacies in San Diego, grew up in a household where both of his parents were pharmacists. So, when it came to choosing a future career, this passionate healthpreneur shares that becoming a pharmacist felt like a natural fit. Like many pharmacy school graduates, after receiving his degree and his license to practice pharmacy, Eldahmy sought work in the corporate world. Over the course of several years, he worked his way up the corporate ladder as a pharmacy manager for large chain stores, including Walmart and Albertsons. When CVS Health acquired Target’s pharmacy and clinic businesses, the retail giant needed an experienced pharmacy manager to help with the newly converted CVS pharmacies located within Target stores throughout the state of California. Eldahmy, a seasoned pharmacy manager by that time, was recruited for and awarded the position. For three years, Eldahmy worked in upper level management for CVS Health, earning clout among his colleagues along with a respectable income. But something didn’t feel right. “It

just hit me one day that I’m not happy,” he says. After some serious soul searching, Eldahmy realized why. “I wanted to make a bigger difference in my patient’s lives. I craved the freedom and flexibility to do that, but in the corporate world I was operating in, it wasn’t possible. It felt like I was one small piece in a big assembly line and that wasn’t fulfilling.” Like his parents, both former pharmacy owners themselves, Eldahmy ultimately recognized the best way he could effect change was to open his own pharmacy. He began scouting locations for his dream pharmacy, and soon secured a space in the heart of the Barrio Logan neighborhood in San Diego. Not long afterwards, he turned in his two-week notice. “The day I decided to quit, my peers, my manager, everyone thought I was crazy,” he recalls. Regardless, Eldahmy took that leap of faith and affirms that he couldn’t be happier. “It’s truly the best place for me. There is nothing else I can see myself doing.” In addition to offering personalized pharmacy care services which includes cost-effective and compounded medicines, Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacies also offers preventative therapies, vitamins and minerals, personal care and household products, along with fast, free delivery services. Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacies, opened since July 2017, is such a successful business model that in addition to the Barrio Logan and La Jolla stores, they will soon be opening a third location in Chula Vista with plans to expand nationally. Eldahmy acknowledges that the key to his company’s rapid success is exactly why he opened the doors for business—to have the freedom and flexibility to offer each customer an exceptional pharmacy experience. Eldahmy can think of no better way to be in service to the community. “We get to improve people’s lives, every day. I feel so fortunate,” he shares. “I have an amazing team that works hard every day. We are all aligned around the same values.” In fact, being of value not only to the patient community, but to future graduating pharmacists is another driving factor for this pioneer in the pharmacy movement. “One of the main reasons we’re

“There’s nothing that feels better than supporting local, independently owned businesses... They’re going out of their way to make a difference. Let’s support them!” expanding and opening more stores is because of the other pharmacists. Right now, there are three pharmacy students working with us that will be graduating soon. I want to give them a place where they can continue to have those amazing opportunities to establish nurturing relationships with their patients.” According to Eldahmy, the most empowered pharmacists can make the biggest difference in people’s lives. “A lot of pharmacists come out of pharmacy school and are not happy with the options available to them. I want to change that. My goal is that everyone working at one of my pharmacies feels inspired to be the best version of themselves—hardworking, creative, intuitive, inquisitive. With us, you’re not just a pharmacy technician, you’re an entrepreneur,” he assures. “Their feeling so valued means a lot to me. We’re breaking the mold of the typical pharmacy.” And speaking of value, in addition to changing a patient’s pharmacy healthcare experience and giving pharmacists an inspiring place to work, Eldahmy’s quest to change the pharmacy world has another driving factor behind it—he values small businesses. “There’s nothing that feels better than supporting local, independently owned businesses. There are a lot of small business owners in your neighborhood, providing real value and quality services and products. I urge you to get to know them. Make lasting relationships with them. I realize there is so much power in the big brands, and that’s something that all small businesses have to work against. But, in the majority of cases, these hardworking business owners are going to be able to provide you with so much more personalized service. They’re going out of their way to make a difference. Let’s support them!” For more information, visit EldahmyWellnessRX.com.

Creating Healthy Boundaries for Relationship Success

TRIS THORP

by Erin Lehn

T

ris Thorp, empowerment breakthrough coach, acclaimed speaker, and author of the life-changing book Healing Your Heart: Rewrite Your Story with Awareness and Intention, shares that all healthy relationships have one thing in common—healthy boundaries. And, she is on a mission to help others learn how to not only create them, but lovingly enforce them. “It might sound counterintuitive, but boundaries are essential and necessary for healthy, thriving relationships,” says Thorp, who strives to embody her values while sharing the wisdom and insight she’s learned from her own experiences. “Healthy boundaries set you and the other person up for relationship success.” But why are they such vital components in relationships? “Healthy boundaries create a feeling of safety which enables us to bring our authentic selves into our relationships,” explains Thorp. “They allow those we are in relationship with to recognize reasonable ways to behave around us. They’ll know what is and what is not acceptable treatment, and what actions will be taken if boundaries are crossed.” While that might sound frank, Thorp assures us that setting boundaries can be a very heart-centered, empowering action that fosters trust and respect in all of our relationships. “Healthy boundaries

create positive experiences and deeper connections with the people in our lives. Getting clear about your boundaries and sharing them in a healthy, positive and firm way avoids hurt feelings in all types of relationships.” Thorp admits that many of us often believe that others should automatically know our boundaries—even if we’ve never communicated them. “That’s why making the choice to get clear about what our boundaries are and stating them clearly, and with love, is essential,” she says. “It’s especially important that boundary conversations come from the heart. Boundaries expressed with love are so beneficial for the success of any relationship.” Thorp shares that while it is a process to discover what our boundaries are, it’s one of the most worthwhile and rewarding steps we can take. “In order to create thriving relationships, we must be willing to have hard conversations. And, we need to be clear with ourselves before

those conversations happen. Half the time we don’t even know what we need but we expect others to know and meet those needs. Before setting up boundaries, we need to first identify what they are.” We can begin, explains Thorp, by first determining what makes us feel happy, valued and appreciated by others. “All of these are guideposts toward the way we want to feel when in relationship. We also need to determine how we don’t want to feel and what we won’t allow in our relationships. “Is it that I won’t tolerate you sneaking behind my back? Leaving me out? Not giving me room to talk? Infidelity? Let them know what really won’t work for you, but do it in a heartfelt way. And, you must follow through on the consequence. This is critical; if we don’t follow through, we teach people that it’s okay to walk all over our boundaries.” Thorp realizes that enforcing boundaries can be challenging. “Many of us haven’t been successful in the past with communicating consequences. It’s helpful to self-reflect on past boundary violations to see what happened. Ask ‘what have I learned from this?’ If fear prevented you from having a clear conversation in the past around expressing your boundaries, find out what was driving that fear. Honest reflection can prevent it from happening in the future.” And while nobody who

creates boundaries with another person wants to see them violated, unfortunately, violations still can happen. “The key to consequences is following through on enforcing them,” she affirms. “We can’t control how another person will respond. We only have control over our thoughts, words and actions. However, if a person is willing to shift their behavior in favor of harmony, that’s the best outcome. But remember, you can’t control the other person. You can, however, forgive yourself for any part you played in their choices. And you always have a choice in how you handle boundaries from now on.” Tris Thorp has a vast array of offerings aimed at empowering others to heal their lives, release emotional baggage and discover their core values while developing more clarity, harmony and abundance in their lives through her bestselling books, online courses, workshops and (currently online) workshops, retreats and her widely acclaimed one-on-one Integrative Breakthrough Coaching Program. As part of her offerings, Thorp created a set of Healthy Boundary tools including her Healthy Boundaries Starter Kit, available for free (for a limited time only) at TrisThorp.com. Those seeking to master the art of effective boundary conversations from the heart can dive even deeper in Thorp’s 90-minute Setting Healthy Boundaries Online Master Class. During this enlightening class, Thorp takes participants on a comprehensive, thought-provoking journey of self-discovery to learn everything they need to know about identifying, setting and enforcing boundaries, in addition to practicing forgiveness. Thorp assures us that we all can become masters in the art of healthy boundaries for healthier relationships. “By standing in our truth, coming from a place of grace and with healthy boundaries in place, we can better navigate relationship challenges in a way that unfolds potential,” she affirms. If you’re ready to learn to create healthy boundaries, visit TrisThorp.com to register for your free starter kit today.

Seaweed Lowers Cows’ Methane Emissions

If Australia can grow enough of the puffy, pink Asparagopsis taxiformis seaweed for every cow in Australia, the country could cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent. That’s the conclusion the University of the Sunshine Coast (Australia) seaweed research group leader Associate Professor Nick Paul. The cows burp out methane, but, “When added to cow feed at less than two percent of the dry matter, this particular seaweed completely knocks out methane production. It contains chemicals that reduce the microbes in the cows’ stomachs that cause them to burp when they eat grass,” he says. Cows are known to eat seaweed. “This seaweed has caused a lot of global interest, and people around the world are working to make sure the cows are healthy, the beef and the milk are good quality,” Paul notes. “But the one missing step, the big thing that is going to make sure this works at a global scale, is to make sure we can produce the seaweed sustainably.”

New Bird Species Found on Remote Island

Although thousands of species have been identified and finding new taxa like birds, is rare, a study published in the journal Science describes five new songbird species and five new subspecies found on a single small island near Sulawesi, Indonesia, during a six-week expedition. Scientists targeted the area because of its geological history and complexity, and the historical notes of other explorers. Two factors that contributed to the description of the large number of species in a small geographic area included knowledge of geographical land connections that helped pinpoint isolated islands likely to harbor substantial endemism and accounts of historic collectors such as British naturalist Alfred Wallace. The findings suggest that human understanding of biogeographically complex regions remains incomplete.

King of Bhutan Requests Selfless Gift

The King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, turned 40 years old on February 21. Rather than ask for gifts, he asked his people to either plant a tree, adopt a stray animal or clean up their neighborhood in his honor. The Himalayan nation is consistently ranked one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world. In May 2016, Wangchuck and his wife celebrated the birth of their firstborn son by asking each of the nation’s households to plant a sapling, resulting in more than 108,000 trees planted. May 2020

Practical Magic

Soul Nourishment The Kitchen As Sacred Space by Marlaina Donato

I

n our busy lives, grabbing food on the run or eating while standing at the kitchen counter is often the norm. Designating the kitchen as a practical sanctuary and seeing the sacredness of food not only makes it more conducive to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but also gives our spirits much-needed satiety. “If we don’t touch the transcendent—emotionally and spiritually—physical nourishment won’t fill us up,” says Ronna Kabatznick, Ph.D., former psychological consultant to Weight Watchers International and the author of The Zen of Eating: Ancient Answers to Modern Weight Problems. “Seeing the kitchen as sacred is something that represents gratitude, beauty and blessings.” Delia Baron, co-author of Better Together Kitchen: Beautiful Recipes to Share With People You Love and the host of seasonal food workshops with partner Ronnit Hoppe in Melbourne, Australia, concurs, “The kitchen is often the heartbeat of the home and the best place to gather, feast, chat and create beautiful memories and rituals. The kitchen is also a place to connect to our food source.” 12

Fun and Felicity

Preparing meals the old-fashioned way can slow us down and foster mindfulness, but Kabatznick emphasizes that cooking is irrelevant. “Look at the kitchen in terms of possibilities: ‘What can I create in this space?’ You don’t have to turn into Julia Child,” she says, adding, “You could be eating Chinese takeout or a prune; it’s all about mindset and simple rituals like saying a blessing, appreciating what we eat as a great gift.” Kabatznick encourages everyone to eat with dignity, and this includes using the good dishes, putting fresh flowers on the table and eating with awareness. Seeing the kitchen as the inspired nucleus of the home, it’s natural to add favorite items like art prints, colorful jars, sentimental treasures, dried flowers and other seasonal delights to nourish daily contentment. Conjuring an element of joy adorns the mundane. “Put on some music to put you in either a peaceful or joyful mood,” says Molly Larkin, author, healing practitioner and blogger at Ancient Wisdom for Balanced Living (MollyLarkin.com), in Corrales, New Mexico. “Turn off the TV and give everyone in the family a job.

Meal prep can be enjoyable and even relaxing in a calm environment. For Baron, organization is key. She advises, “Having all the ingredients you need and working in a clean space also helps make the experience rewarding.” The smallest of kitchens can be abundant and organized with the help of a little innovation. A simple bookcase can offer additional shelf space for dry goods, bowls of produce or favorite cups. A small end table can hold a favorite tea pot and a jar of gourmet dark chocolate. A beautiful basket can hold go-to spice jars, and a pretty pitcher near the stove can accommodate a multitude of cooking utensils. “If you can’t fit it all out of sight in a cabinet, get some glass jars, fill them with grains, flours and legumes and line them up on the countertop. It will be neat, and you can see what you have,” suggests Larkin. In the end, a well-nourished body and spirit fosters a beautiful life and inspires the same in others. An advocate for supporting the hungry in all communities, Kabatznick underscores local efforts and seeing the big picture of our relationship with food: “Taking out the garbage and cleaning up is also a sacred act if we bring that attitude into it. Food connects us to the Earth, the moon and the stars. From the seed to the truck driver—everything and everyone involved—the process of food is miraculous.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books and a composer. Laugh throughout the meal preparation. Dance as you cook. Do the same thing if you live alone.” Preparing food, whether a healthy smoothie or a gourmet weekend dinner for two, is a way to express love for ourselves and others. Baron loves the presence of plants, lovely ceramics and interesting platters and dishes, and notes, “Families can definitely shop, chop, cook and mealplan together to make the kitchen a fun place to be. Doing these things together is very bonding and sends the message that looking after yourself is important.”
