If we human beings are going to stick around on this earth, we need to learn to get along not just with the people who share our views, but also, and more to the point, with the people who get our goat. hoarding. I biked today for the first time in a very long while. I rode to my friend’s house to pick up some custommade facemasks. They aren’t medical grade but they’re useful and I’m happy to forward them to the medical professionals in the front lines of this global health crisis. I consider myself a visionary, but I didn’t envision the pandemic. I was prepared though, in both my personal and business life. Last month I purposely cut my printed page count down to help drive people to the magazine’s digital presence. This month and moving forward I will be promoting digital delivery. We will add a subscription option if you absolutely need a printed version. Distribution, printing and all that goes with delivering my printed publication are not eco-friendly and not going to happen when we need to stay home. I will be doing my best to post local news and sources online and on social media. I’ve been social isolating for a few years due to personal life changes and choice. I’m also very used to holing up and working from home since I’ve been an entrepreneur all my adult life. My deeper personal isolation bought me to painful peaceful bliss. I feel this same wave of painful peaceful bliss as we navigate our way through this pandemic. I wear my heart on my sleeve. My honest delivery can create havoc with family, friends and others. It also brings truth. I’m going to share my truth with you all today. During my transitional isolation time mentioned above, I gained an extra unexplained 15 pounds. I then shed 10 pounds soon after I found out that I was a grandmother. I didn’t know that my oldest daughter was pregnant. Why? Because I didn’t know where she was. My daughter was homeless, and I often roamed the streets trying to find her. This time, I not only found her, but my beautiful, healthy granddaughter too, who I am presently raising. I am grateful that my daughter is alive and off the streets. I’m grateful that my grandbaby is healthy. Becoming her caregiver hasn’t been easy. The system is faulty and full of misinformation and mistreatment, but I fought and she’s with me now. And then came coronavirus and the glaring issues with another faulty system not prepared to protect its citizens from harm. We are now dealing with the global truth of what is really happening behind the scenes. With truth, comes change and resolution. I’d vote for Governor Cuomo in a New York minute for president. I grew up in New York and his “tell it like it is” is inbred in my brain, heart and soul. We need more whistle blowers and truth slayers. I believe our world will change in ways we never imagined. I’m looking forward to evolving together with you. ONLINE SPONSOR

Take Cordyceps to Enhance Immunity

Cordyceps, a fungus that grows on caterpillars high in the Himalayas, has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a rejuvenating and performance-enhancing medicine. The latest Korean research shows it also boosts the immune system. Scientists tested 79 healthy adults for eight weeks, giving 39 of them 1,680 milligrams of cordyceps a day in capsules and the other 40 were given a placebo. The cordyceps produced a 38 percent increase in natural killer (NK) cell activity, which plays a role in immunity by detecting and killing virus-infected cells, tumor cells and abnormal cells.

Becoming a Light in the Darkness by Erin Lehn

J

ust a few weeks ago, most of us in the United States were going about our regularly scheduled lives. Although there was knowledge of a virus affecting citizens in China, the thought of a global pandemic was far from many of our minds. My, how things have changed. Much like Dorothy in the Land of Oz, it feels as though we’ve been swept up in a tornado and spit back out into a disorienting land of the unknown, where the regular rules don’t apply.

These are unprecedented times. Naturally, we’re worried for ourselves, our loved ones, our finances, our communities. Trying to understand the sheer global impact of this virus is staggering, let alone how it’s going to affect us all for years to come. We’re being asked to stay home and socially distance ourselves to stop this virus from spreading even more. We’re dealing with unwelcomed financial hardships and an uncertain future. A trip to the grocery store feels like a life-threatening experience! The world as we know it is collapsing all around us. It’s the perfect setting for panic to set in. Many in the spiritual community are positing that the virus is a medicine. What if that were true? What if this bitter medicine we’re all taking in right now leads us to live more heart-centered, authentic, connected lives? Will the virus eventually teach us to slow down, savor life, and relish in the things that truly matter? Only time will tell. While we don’t have much choice in how this pandemic story unfolds, we can choose how we’re going to react to it. During this forced sabbatical, let’s not squander our time binging on terrifying news reports. That only adds to the panic. We can stay informed without immers-

ing ourselves in bad news. If we really are being given an opportunity to reset and reevaluate how we want to engage with life, does it truly serve us to spend that time worrying, or is our time better spent envisioning a lighter, brighter future? We’re all simultaneously spinning around in this cyclone together, and the only way out is through. There is no better time than now to focus on what brings us pleasure, soothes our minds, and ushers in love and lightness into these dark times. Spending our days doing more things that uplift our spirits will help us get into a better mind space. And once we’re in that space, we’re able to offer more joy, compassion and emotional support to others that can really use it. Here are some tips to get there:

Spread Laughter

Share the best of those funny memes, films and comedy skits. Or better yet, make some funny videos yourself! We could all use more laughter right now.

Express Gratitude

Even with all that is happening around us, we have so much to be grateful for. Get in the habit of voicing your gratitude for all the blessings in your life.

Get Creative

Creative projects give your mind something fun to focus on versus being in a constant state of fear.

Watch Happy Media

Instead of watching pandemic films on Netflix, why not hop over to the comedy section—or better yet, indulge in old SNL skits on YouTube.

Stay Present

Now is where your power lies. When anxiety strikes, ask yourself ‘what’s real, right now.’

Spring Clean

Nothing feels better than a freshly scrubbed home. It’s a great way to occupy a worried mind.

Cultivate Joy

Spend as much time as possible each day doing whatever brings a smile to your face. What this virus is demonstrating loudly is that we are all connected. What we do, no matter where we are in the world, can have a major effect on those we encounter. Let’s start making those connections more meaningful. Let’s find more ways to spread love and laughter. With all of our lights shining bright, we’ll break through this darkness together.

Think Beautiful Thoughts Renowned shaman Taita Juanito, founder of Finca Ambiwasi retreat center in Colombia, suggests that during these times we spend more time in prayer and meditation instead of worrying. “Be sure to see all the blessings you have and to live in harmony. To be grateful you are breathing, alive and know you are a part of nature…Be sure to think beautiful thoughts. To speak beautiful words. And to act in beautiful ways. The greatest prayer any of us can offer to life is how we treat ourselves, others and the earth. Your daily walk is your greatest prayer.”

Coping with Coronavirus Internal Peace & Calm in Three Easy Steps

A

by Elizabeth Hancock

s the world struggles to cope with coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading faster and wider every day, it’s clear that people are beginning to show the strain of unrelenting stress. Children are being taken out of schools, stock markets are crashing, elderly parents are being quarantined, travel bans have been imposed, and nearly everyone has been instructed to work from home. How do we cope in these uncertain times? Finding ourselves in a constant fight, flight or freeze mode as a coping strategy for rising global tensions is not a wise choice for survival. As humans we can consciously choose how we respond to any given external stimuli by being proactive and intentional with our time and energy. Here are three things you can do right now to reinstate a sense of internal peace and calm:

1

Limit news and media updates. Limiting your exposure to the relentless media updates will help you take a step back from the growing mass hysteria and fear. A half hour to an hour maximum of TV, radio, news articles, YouTube, or social media updates should be more than enough to keep you suitably informed.

2 3

Move your body. Stress gets locked in the body and can wreak havoc on sensitive hormonal systems, as well as digestion. Try to move your body daily to release stifled energy, stretch muscles, and create a greater mind/body connection. Meditate. There is no better time than now to maintain your meditation practice to cultivate greater mental clarity and higher awareness functioning. This is crucial for long-term well-being and health. As humans we have the ability to rise above confusion, anxiety and fear through greater mindfulness and higher awareness. Let us consciously choose to take control of our bodies and minds and respond to this growing crisis with clarity. Elizabeth Hancock is a certified professional Life and Spiritual Coach (CPC, CSC) at BeyondYou.Coach, with more than 25 years meditation experience, kundalini awakening, and intuitive insight. PLANET RESCUE Grassroots Strategies Combat Climate Crisis by Julie Marshall

L

ike most kids, Azalea Morgan loves polar bears. “They’re fluffy and cute,” the 8-year-old says, and after watching a documentary on how climate change is affecting these Arctic apex predators, she badly wanted to help. Her mom, Molly Morgan, suggested she do something big, because the problem of global warming is monumental. For nearly three weeks last September, Azalea pedaled her bike alongside her mom and 9-year-old sister, Ember, setting out from their hometown of Andover, New Hampshire, en route to New York City to attend the United Nations (UN) Climate Action Summit, where Greta Thunberg and other global youth leaders marched for change. The trip was a fundraiser to put solar panels on their school and for future projects under KidsCare4PolarBears, a Facebook page that documents their ongoing efforts. While not everyone has the time or inclination to ride 250 miles and camp— some of it in the rain—or as Thunberg did, sail across the Atlantic in a zeroemissions yacht, there are steps individuals can take to combat climate change on 10

a grassroots level, experts say, because the crisis is undeniable, as seen most recently in the catastrophic bushfires across Australia. There are peaceful protests taking place worldwide scheduled throughout 2020 at FridaysForFuture.org and other organizations, but a growing number of individuals that want to do more are using their imaginations and creative endeavors, inspiring others to take unique action. Students at a school in Spain wrote and performed a play and illustrated a book to raise climate change awareness, while a teen from California used her artistic skills to raise thousands of dollars for wildlife. On March 28, people around the world participated in the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour by collectively turning off lights at 8:30 p.m. while holding eco-events, and others are joining in the global tree-planting campaign of The Nature Conservancy (TNC). Reversing course may seem insurmountable, but individuals have a lot of power, says Dan Shepard, UN global

Stepping Up for Biodiversity

“I wanted to inspire other kids,” Ember says of her bicycle trek for polar bears. “I love animals and they deserve to not die.” According to a 2019 UN Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, more than 1 million species are threatened with extinction, and one of the main reasons is climate change, say experts, including Nikhil Advani, director of Climate Communities and Wildlife at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Protecting large predators is one key to enriching biodiversity, Advani says. “The top of the food chain has a significant impact on prey species and the ecosystem.” But predators are suffering because of humans that are feeling the impacts of climate change, Advani says. Long droughts have forced many Kenyan pastoralists to enter protected parks and compete with wildlife for water and grazing land, resulting in lion deaths as retaliation for killing livestock. In the Himalayas, as the Earth warms, snow leopard habitat is being encroached for pastureland. In Zimbabwe, farmers have turned to chopping down trees for wood as an alternative economic opportunity. “Everybody is stressed and competing for resources,” Advani says. “It is a very severe result of climate change.” Advani and researchers are working in tandem with local societies in 30 countries across Africa, Central America and Asia to fund novel projects under the Wildlife Adaptation Innovation Fund. For instance, they are piloting a rainwater harvesting project to help farmers get through the dry seasons and are constructing concrete and mudbrick nests to help albatross breed better in Tasmania. These special projects are based on available levels of donations that are sometimes crowd-sourced. Raising funds for innovative projects, as well as increasing awareness of

what’s happening, is an important grassroots strategy, says Elan Strait, WWF director of U.S. climate campaigns. It can be as simple as sharing updates, tagging social media influencers and instigating a rallying cry. WWF has its own program called Panda Ambassadors in which conservation activists of all ages can get tips and tools to promote specific projects they feel most passionate about. “I love to see what young people are doing, because if we collectively use our voice to amplify the facts about climate change, we can work to find solutions,” Strait says. “And we need facts to get out there because, at least in the U.S., some people think climate change is still a controversy and are afraid to talk about it, but we should have that conversation with friends and family so we can find solutions.”

Youth Rising to the Challenge

Getting involved in grassroots-level strategies is empowering not only for kids, but for adults that need their resiliency and inspiration, says Janet Stringer,

manager of donor relations at Polar Bears International, in Bozeman, Montana. “In my work, I hear from so many people who are feeling deep despair about the climate crisis. I draw hope from the children who write to us, sharing stories and pictures about their dreams for a future that includes polar bears,” says Stringer. “I think we owe it to the next generation to work as hard as we can to come together and make the necessary changes to ensure that polar bears—and all wildlife—are not a species we learn about in the pages of a book, but a wild species that we can see with our own eyes, reminding us of how special our planet is and why it deserves our respect.” One of her favorite examples comes from students at the Daina-Isard school, in Olesa de Montserrat, Spain, and their climate-driven projects with teacher Connie Darilek, who asked the Aquarium of Barcelona to help them grow plankton, an organism threatened by warming seas. “They gave us plankton and jellyfish, and it was really amazing for the students to learn the [Arctic] food chain

and how serious it would be losing the polar bear on top,” Darilek says. Students recently published the book Nanuc, a story about a polar bear that they also illustrated, now in its second printing. Josie Martin, 13, of Solana Beach, California, has raised $8,700 for conservation of rhinos, elephants, pangolins, gorillas and polar bears by giving watercolor paintings to those that donate to charities through her PayPal Giving page at Chuffed.org/project/peace-lovehope-for-rhinos. “Each year, I think I’m getting a little bit better at creating art which sends a strong message,” she says. “The message I try to express is that some of our best-known wild animals might in my lifetime no longer be on the planet. I think the difference I make through art is that I am helping to raise awareness for important animal conservation work.”

Every Action Counts

There’s no one solution to climate change, says Catherine Macdonald, TNC director of natural climate solutions for

North America. “We really have to try, all of us. It’s important that everyone feel they can contribute, because everything does make a difference, and no action is too small.” For those that are not art-inclined, one of the best things people can do is to plant trees, Macdonald says, whether it’s replanting forests or increasing their numbers in urban areas. According to a 2018 study by TNC published in Science Advances, nature-driven land management could sequester 21 percent of America’s annual greenhouse gas pollution—the equivalent of emissions from all cars and trucks on the roads today. Planting trees emerged in the study as the most significant among 21 strategies to mitigate global warming. One good way to get started is join the TNC Plant a Billion Trees program, Macdonald says; details are at Tinyurl.com/ TNCPlantABillionTrees. “Climate change is definitely a growing concern that we are facing, and

as more people understand there is a problem and what the solutions are, the more influence we can have on the big decision-makers, whether that’s government or corporations that make our products,” she says. “And being aware informs voters to advance climate action.” While Josie, Ember, Azalea and the students at Daina-Isard aren’t old enough to vote, their message is strong. “I’m worried about the impact climate change will have on our future,” Josie says. “I think people should protest peacefully for the things they believe in and that more people should exercise their right to vote for leaders who care about the youth in our world and the generations to come. I also think people should try to spend a little bit of their time taking action for what they want to see changed in our world.” Julie Marshall is a Colorado-based writer and author of Making Burros Fly: Cleveland Amory, Animal Rescue Pioneer.
