Natural DESIGN with a Difference
“CELEBRATING 350 YEARS OF HISTORY”
N
atural Green Creative Spaces has worked in partnership with Newmarket Race Course and The Jockey Club to rejuvenate one of the high profile areas at the Rowley Mile course. This is part of a programme of planned works to improve and upgrade the historic site, which this year celebrates its 350 years’ anniversary. Initially, Natural Green Creative Spaces were asked to look at the whole of the Rowley Mile site from a visitor perspective and provide recommendations as to how this might be improved. In the event, Natural Green Creative Spaces reviewed twelve separate areas. The Rowley Mile site was surveyed and individual concepts and designs were presented and debated with the Newmarket team as to impact, likely cost, flexibility and heritage. Key areas were prioritised for more detailed design, further visualisations and detailed costings. Planting schemes were proposed, procured and assistance provided to the gardening team, where needed.

“Over time, this area, which is very busy on race days, had become very dark and outdated architecturally. Our choice was either to knock down and start again - at a cost of several million pounds - or to look to rejuvenate the area and existing structures, but with the objective of ensuring another good few more years of life.We are absolutely delighted with the finished result and Natural Green Creative Spaces work.” Amy Starkey, Regional Director Eastern Region, Jockey Club Racecourses.

GUINEAS COURTYARD “Newmarket’s profile as the ‘Home of Horseracing’ demanded that Natural Green develop designs for key areas of the site that were both respectful of its heritage but also created a fresh, attractive and high quality feel for the visitor” Charlie Cox, CEO/ Creative Director Natural Green Creative Spaces.

Before Rejuvenation: 2015
Reviewing the project objectively, the rejuvenation of the Guineas Courtyard has brought a number of positive results for Newmarket Racecourse: • Excellent return on investment, extending the life of the structures considerably and already the spend is dramatically improving the customer experience. • The creation of a light, airy, modern space - respectful of the history of the site, in a high profile visitor and media area. • The finish is complete, consistent and coherent - not piecemeal and fragmented. • The works were completed within budget and on time. All works had to be finished by the first meeting of the year and within the financial constraints. • Natural Green’s engagement was start to finish, from the creation and development of the designs, the costing of each of the many elements, the visual presentation of options and alternatives and, ultimately, the project management of the delivery. This approach meant clear accountability and responsibility for Natural Green, allowing the Newmarket Team to ensure that business as usual remained on track. • The end result depicted the visuals presented at the outset. Often architects’ impressions contrast from the reality of what is actually expressed. As you can see, Natural Green Creative Spaces delivered what was promised.

“I am absolutely delighted by the way in which we have worked in partnership with the whole team at Newmarket. They have been professional, challenging and incredibly supportive, but we have all had the same objective: to rejuvenate an area that demanded to be upgraded to the highest quality space. We’re looking forward to repeating this success at both Newmarket and at other Jockey Club sites”. Charlie Cox, Chairman, Natural Green Creative Spaces
