e v o L ... SalvationSacks Do you have a secret love of purses? It’s okay, several of us do too and we found the greenest line for guilt-free indulgence. Margaret Prodanov of Paciﬁc Beach is the owner of SalvationSacks, a local San Diego company offering unique handbags made from vintage, salvaged, and recycled materials. Her tagline is “goods from the past redesigned for the future” which is the inspiration for her designs. Many of her bags feature recycled belts as the handle or strap, and incorporate beautiful fabrics that Morse By Juliana might once have been a skirt or perhaps vintage upholstery. No two are exactly the same. The two on the left belong to our publisher, Naomi Williamson, and she treats them like the little pieces of art that they are. To become the owner of a SalvationSacks purse you will have to shell out over $100, but you have to keep in mind that these bags are not made in a sweatshop or mass assembly line. Each bag is one of a kind and a lot of time (sometimes up to 5 hours per bag) goes into the creation of each piece. Things We Love Lotus Cafe and Juice Bar This place has won our hearts. The owners, Johanna and Carl, are just the sweetest and most conscious people imaginable and the natural food restaurant they created is a gem. Located in the Lumberyard shopping center in Encinitas, right on the Coast Highway 101, the Lotus Cafe features a predominantly vegetarian menu with a few chicken and fish options for non-vegetarian patrons. Vegans and the growing number of people who are finding themselves gluten intolerant will also be happy with the menu. We love their homemade soups and salads (all their dressings are made from scratch). The atmosphere has a peaceful and somewhat spiritual vibe, and beautiful paintings of lotus flowers adorn the walls. The flooring in the dining area is made of fossilized bamboo, the chairs are recycled, and the stained glass pane is repurposed from an old building in Oregon. The next time you are in Encinitas, treat your body (and soul) by stopping in. Be sure to try a vegan cupcake (chocolate or carrot with vegan “cream cheese” frosting). Yum. Location: From I-15 N., take the Highway 76 exit. Drive east approximately 20 miles then turn left onto a northeast fork marked “South Grade.” Continue 6.5 miles to a “T” intersection. Turn left here onto S-6 and drive approximately 3 miles to the Palomar Observatory Campground entrance on the right. Follow the campground loop to a small signed turnout near camp spaces 19 and 20. Difficulty: Moderate Distance: 3.8 miles roundtrip Dog Friendly: No Hours: Daily, May to November Entrance Fees: Cleveland National Forest Adventure Pass (One-day $5 or Annual $30). A National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Pass is also acceptable to park. Purchase directly from U.S. Forest Service or at nearby locations. More info at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/ Just a few steps onto the Palomar Mountain Observatory Trail you’ll find woodland splendor and quietude. Dense oak and conifer forest envelops you in beauty and peace on this well-defined, meandering trail. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. At about half a mile, a picturesque overlook of Mendenhall Valley framed by pines awaits you. This postcard view changes with the seasons: the soft greens of new spring growth, golden summer meadows dotted with small water bodies that reflect blue sky, vivid fall colors, or the crisp white of winter snow. In spring, you’re likely to see lots of blooms. Fleabane, goldenrod, and yellow monkey flower brighten spots where dappled sunlight filters through the stretching limbs of mature oaks and pines. Seasonal watershed gurgles alongside the climbing trail, and beneath plank bridges. Benches are placed sporadically along the path that leads through shaded forest and grassy meadows to an abrupt endpoint at CA S6. Here, you can make your way through the parking lot and visit the observatory (open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), or head back the way you came. Be sure to bring along extra water, give yourself plenty of time to absorb nature’s serenity, and perhaps even stop for a rest among the lichen- and moss-speckled boulders. The Palomar Mountain Observatory Trail climbs from 4500 to 5500 feet above sea level in 1.9 miles. Although the trail itself is not difficult, activity in this thinner mountain air can be physically taxing, so don’t overdo it. Watch for possible rattlesnakes and poison oak. Mountain weather can change swiftly, so dress in layers. Restrooms are located near the parking area.

~ PACE, or Property Assessed Clean Energy, is a new concept for ﬁnancing solar systems that will allow homeowners in San Diego to install solar systems at no upfront cost. SDG&E Will Now Have to Cut Checks to Homeowners With Solar Panels

~ A new law called the California Solar Surplus Act of 2009 (AB 920) requires utility companies to cut solar homeowners a check for excess power they generate that is fed into the grid. Prior to this, the excess energy was basically a gift to the utility company at the end of the year with no compensation paid to the owner of the solar system. The average residential system in San Diego is around 4.5kW which translates to a current cost of about $25,500 before any rebates and tax credits are applied. Currently there is a federal tax credit of 30% of the gross cost of your system and you can also get about 13% of the total cost as cash back through the California Solar Initiative. The latter is set up on levels and you can see the most current incentives at www.csi-trigger.com. The California Solar Initiative is administered by the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE), a local non-proﬁt organization dedicated to a clean energy future. Your solar installer can tell you about the most current information about rebates and incentives you qualify for, as well as take care of ﬁling the necessary documents for you.

So how much does it really cost? We asked many solar contractors and experts in the ﬁeld to give us an idea of what the cost would be for an average photovoltaic system. Here is what we found: The cost of “going solar” has dramatically decreased over the past several years. The average cost is currently $5.50-$5.85 per watt BEFORE any

How long will it take for the system to pay for itself? This answer is complicated because there are many factors to consider but it is generally between 5 to 10 years. For example, if electricity rates continue to rise, the payback time will be shorter. This answer also depends on how you ﬁnanced the system and what incentives and rebates you were able to take advantage of. Since the systems have such a long life (they

No one really knows for sure how long the systems will last in the long run because the technology has only really been in use since the ‘70s. They will likely last longer than the rest of your life.

Solar Installations with No Upfront Cost There is a lot of buzz right now about an exciting new concept called PACE, or Property Assessed Clean Energy that will make solar systems affordable to so many more homeowners. This revolutionary concept basically involves having the upfront cost of installing a solar system or other energy efficiency retrofit paid for by the city through a special financing plan that allows the owner to pay for the system over time through their property tax bills. Two programs are planned to be launched this summer in San Diego through PACE and administered by the CCSE. The City of San Diego will offer a program called the San Diego Clean Generation Program and there will also be a statewide program that various cities in San Diego County can opt into. According to Jeremy Hutman, PACE programs manager for

CCSE, these programs are designed to eliminate the large upfront cost, which is a stumbling block for many homeowners interested in solar, and allow homeowners to be cash positive from the beginning (since the solar system will likely decrease your energy bill by more than you are paying back on the loan). Going Solar is Easy Just Follow These Three Steps:

1. The ﬁrst step is to make your home

as energy efficient as possible. You can do an energy audit yourself or have a professional carry out a more thorough one. A benefit of using a professional for your energy audit is that they can use comprehensive testing methods that are not feasible for the average homeowner (such as infrared thermography). Many solar companies either have or can recommend energy audit professionals that can help you determine how much energy your home consumes and find ways to make your home more energy efficient. This can actually lower the cost of a system because as your home becomes more energy efficient, you will need fewer solar panels to supply your energy needs.

2. Get free estimates from three or

four solar companies (see the list of San Diego solar companies at the end of this article). The company will send a representative to assess your site and energy needs so they can recommend an appropriate system for you. Prices can vary between contractors. They should be licensed and insured and don’t be afraid to ask for references. Your solar installer will be able to provide you with ﬁnancing and leasing options, as well as information about current incentives and rebates you are entitled to.

3. Choose a solar company to install

your panels, have the system installed, ﬂip the switch, and know that you have made the future a little brighter!

I consider myself an eco-conscious

consumer. I try, whenever possible, to use my purchasing power to make the world a better place. Unfortunately, I am ﬁnding that it is getting harder and harder to sift out truly green products from fake green products.

More and more companies are jumping onto the green bandwagon and changing the labeling and marketing (but not much else) of their products to have an earth-friendly image. For example, a company might change the packaging of a product containing harmful chemicals to include a green leaf or green grass to give the feeling of nature, but they might not have improved the formula at all or made any attempt to lower the environmental impact of the product. Product names are also being changed to include words such as “Eco,”

“Nature’s,” and “Organics.” It doesn’t help that in some industries such as body care, safety testing and labeling standards are largely unregulated, and compliance with the National Organics Program (NOP) is currently voluntary, not mandatory. That means that companies can use words like “natural” and “organic” to promote personal care products that might only have a drop or two of anything that resembles an herb or natural ingredient, in a soup of synthetic ingredients and petrochemicals. In today’s world, more and more people are becoming aware and concerned about how the products and services they use impact the environment. We want things that are genuinely better for our families and our planet (“greener” in other words). According to a recent AARP study, more than 40 million of the 79 million baby boom-

It is believed that the term “greenwashing” was ﬁrst coined by a New York environmentalist named Jay Westerveld in his 1986 essay examining the hotel industry’s practice of placing green placards in each room, promoting the reuse of guest towels, seemingly to “save the environment.”

His opinion was that the actual objective of this “green campaign” of the hoteliers was, in fact, increased proﬁt since little or no effort toward other waste reduction or recycling was being implemented in most cases, if the practice did not result in cost-cutting.

Restoring the Integrity of the Organic Label Despite the rampant greenwashing that is out there, there are many companies dedicated to doing the right thing. Right here in San Diego, Dr. Bronner’s, the nation’s top-selling natural brand of liquid and bar soap, is working hard to clear up the confusion and put a level of integrity back into product labeling. Together with the Organic Consumer’s Association’s “Coming Clean Campaign,” they are calling out companies that are using fraudulent labeling that is misleading consumers. Lawsuits have been ﬁled with the goal of restoring and protecting the integrity of the organic label and industry. They are pushing for USDA enforcement of organic labeling standards in the personal care industry that mirror that of organic food standards. David Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner Magic Soaps, has said, “One way or another, the era of ripping of organic consumers in personal care will soon come to an end.” This is particularly important because studies have found that consumers who become interested in organics generally start by ﬁrst switching to organic body care products. It is not surprising then that a 2009 study conducted by TerraChoice (www.sinsofgreenwashing.org) found that the beauty and personal care products category ranked among the highest for green claims and greenwashing. Greenwashing can lead consumers with good intentions to make purchases that do not deliver on environmental promises. Each time this happens, the potential environmental beneﬁts of his or her purchase is wasted. The competitive pressure from companies using greenwashing also takes a market share away from companies offering products that have legitimate beneﬁts, thereby slowing the spread of real environmental innovation in the marketplace. The consumer might also start to feel duped or confused and become cynical about all environmental claims, giving up on their efforts to choose greener products. This is the worst thing that can happen.

How to Spot Greenwashing Beware of green colored labels or pictures of grass, ﬂowers or green leaves. Just because a product has

a green label or an “earthy” look, doesn’t necessarily mean that that product is eco-friendly in any way. Don’t be duped by the word “natural.” The terms “natural,” “organic,” and “eco-friendly” are powerful greenwashing terms that appeal to people on a deep level because when consumers see these words, they tend to think “safe,” “good,” and “green.” When these terms are used on labels or in marketing without elaboration, they are essentially meaningless as they are entirely subjective. Don’t be fooled by fake green seals. When you see a seal, certiﬁcation, or environmental label on a product, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Some labels like the USDA Organic label and “Green Seal” are credible but many others are unregulated and anyone can use them regardless of whether or not the product is truly

green. Some companies even create their own certiﬁcation seals! Green labels essentially mean nothing if they are not monitored by an independent third party.

Think about whether something is truly recyclable. The recycling symbol used with no other information or qualifications also does not mean a thing. Consider that a plastic bag that is labeled ”recyclable” isn’t earth-friendly if trash bags are ordinarily not separated out from other trash at the landfill for recycling and are not accepted at most recycling centers as a recyclable plastic. This claim is deceptive because it asserts an environmental benefit where no significant or meaningful benefit exists.

• The Hidden Trade-Off: This is the most common form of greenwashing and accounts for 57% percent of cases. An example would be marketing a product as “Energyefﬁcient” when the larger negative factor is that it contains a lot of hazardous materials.

Consider the big picture. Disposable products (such as razors, toothbrushes, water bottles) that are made from recycled materials are an improvement, but it would be much greener to avoid these one-time use, disposable products altogether. It is environmentally preferable to choose products that have a long life and can be reused. A reusable stainless steel water bottle is a better choice than a disposable plastic one, and razors and toothbrushes that have replaceable heads are a better choice than disposable ones.

• Lack of Proof: This accounts for about 26% of cases and it is when a company makes an environmental claim that can’t be easily verified through data or a third party. For example: a shampoo that a company claims to be “organic,” but with no verifiable certification.

For example, claiming that a product is “all-natural.” Since arsenic, uranium, and formaldehyde are all naturally occuring, and poisonous, “all natural” isn’t necessarily “green.” • Irrelevant Claims: This accounts for about 4% of greenwashing cases and involves a claim that sounds good but is essentially pointless. For example, claiming a product is CFC-free, even though CFCs were banned 20 years ago. • The Lesser of Two Evils: This accounts for about 1% of cases and involves claims that are not only irrelevant but have questionable ecological significance to begin with. Example: “Organic” cigarettes or “environmentally friendly” pesticides. • Sin of Fibbing: This category accounts for less than one percent of reported cases of greenwashing and involves claims that are downright false. Example: Products falsely claiming to be certified by an internationally recognized environmental standard like Energy Star or Green Seal.

Don’t Give Up! The most important thing is to not give up on trying to ﬁnd green products! This would be the worst consequence of greenwashing. Although one would be hard pressed to ﬁnd a product that is perfectly “green,” (because to create and then distribute anything, resources must be consumed), we can make choices that are genuinely “greener.” There are shades of green – from barely green to deep green. A good site to verify greenwashing suspicions is the Greenwashing Index run by the University of Oregon at www.greenwashingindex. com. It allows cases of greenwashing to be rated on a scale that goes from “Authentic” to “Suspect” to “Bogus.” Their goal is to help consumers become more savvy about evaluating marketing claims of advertisers and to hold businesses accountable.

So don’t give up. Just look a little deeper. Don’t be fooled by fancy ads, packaging, and product names. he Organic Consumers Association is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the nation’s organic consumers. OCA represents over 850,000 members, supporters, subscribers, and volunteers. In recent years, OCA has been active in pressing the USDA and producers of organic goods to ensure that goods labeled and advertised as “Organic” comply with strict, reliable, and consistent standards. OCA’s “Coming Clean” campaign has sought to educate consumers about the deceptive labeling as “Organic” of personal care products. Reducing your general consumption is the greenest option of all. It is also important to consider who made the product in question and look at the company as a whole. Do they have one small “green” line or product among a mainstay of conventional products (if so, your greenwashing detector should go on high alert) or is their main focus on sustainability? I prefer to support companies like Dr. Bronner’s (they produce the nation’s top-selling natural brand of liquid and bar soap) that have been doing the right thing on so many levels for years. Companies like these that are dedicated to doing the right thing and have a high level of integrity create consumer trust. eco-fashion: Sustainable fashion involves clothing that is made from materials that reduce harm to the environment, and support the health of the consumers, as well as the people who make and distribute them. In general, they are Fair Trade and made to last, using sustainable and organic raw materials. They are also colored without the use of harmful chemicals (such as bleach).

Look for these terms when shopping:

Bamboo-is a natural and renewable resource that can be made into beautiful (and silky-soft) fabrics. It grows very quickly and does not need fertilizers or pesticides. Tencel-is a strong fabric made from 100% biodegradable cellulose, extracted from wood pulp using a nontoxic process. It is buttery-soft and quite luxurious. Organic Cotton-is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers, and is free of formaldehyde finishes. In contrast, conventional cotton is grown using one pound of toxic chemicals per three pounds of cotton (these chemicals ultimately end up in our water system and food chain). Hemp-is a very durable, breatheable, and naturally UV resistant fiber. The feel is similar to linen, but softer. The plant grows easily, without the use of pesticides or other chemicals. Recycled, Repurposed, or Reused-High-quality clothing can be made from recycled textiles and even recycled plastic bottles, saving on landfill space and the amount of raw materials used. Fair Trade-means that the people who make the clothing are paid a fair price and have decent working conditions. 74

Community Supported Agriculture

CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is farming that is supported by the local residents. The farm will sell “shares” or boxes of their goods, usually fresh-picked, organic produce, and sometimes diary and meat, to participants. The purchaser pays the farm directly and will pick up their goods at the farm or a nearby location. They can choose how much and how often they receive their boxes to suit their needs. The prices are very competitive to the grocery stores and many times will “out-deal” the local markets depending on the available supply. CSAs are a wonderful way to support your local farm and to receive the freshest possible goods. It is also a way to buy from a clean, safe, and trusted source. With the worries of pesticides and food-borne illnesses, many people choose the CSA to avoid those issues. Becoming a member is also a great way to stay connected with your community and grow a good relationship with and a new appreciation for the local farmers. Going to a farmers market and meeting the person who planted, grew and harvested the food you will eat is a special experience. “VOC”

stands for Volatile Organic Compound. That “new car smell” and “new carpet smell” are caused by the outgassing of VOCs from the synthetic chemicals used to manufacture those products. VOCs are found in many types of products including paint, furniture, synthetic mattresses, commercially drycleaned clothing, etc. Many VOCs are known or suspected of having direct toxic effects on humans. One type of VOC is Formaldehyde, a potent carcinogen commonly used in pressed wood products like particle board. What does

‘Organic’ mean?

‘Organic’ is a labeling term for products that have been grown or produced naturally, without the use of synthetic (or petroleum derived) chemicals such as pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizers. The certiﬁed label also lets consumers know that the product was not grown with genetically modiﬁed organisms (GMOs) or sewage sludge, and has not been irradiated.

Animals raised organically must eat 100% organic feed that does not contain any

animal byproducts, and they must not be given antibiotics and growth hormones. They must have access to the outdoors (although the deﬁnition of “outdoor access” for chickens is ambiguous because they can have extremely limited access to the outdoors and still meet the criteria).

Organic production uses practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural

systems. There is respect for the health of interdependent communities of plants, animals, people, and the soil. With healthier soils, nutrient content is higher and many people notice that organically grown foods taste better than their conventionally grown counterparts.

By choosing products and food that are organic, you will be helping to keep pes-

ticides and chemicals out of our air, water, and food. You will also be giving your ﬁnancial support to farmers who are using responsible agricultural methods. Natural Food Stores Tiers of Organic Labeling: The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed a ﬁxed set of standards that must be met by anyone using the “organic” label in the United States (whether or not the product is from the US or imported). Here are the meanings of some common labels you might encounter while shopping:

-USDA 100% Organic:

These products are certiﬁed by the US Department of Agriculture as containing 100% organic ingredients and can display the USDA Organic Logo and/or the certiﬁers logo.

-USDA Organic:

These products are certiﬁed by the US Department of Agriculture as containing at least 95% organic ingredients. The remaining 5% must come from non-organic ingredients that have been approved by the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). These products can also display the USDA organic logo and/or the certiﬁers logo.

-Made With Organic Ingredients:

Food products labeled as “made with organic ingredients” must be made with at least 70% organic ingredients, three of which must be listed on the back of the package and again the remaining 30% of the non-organic ingredients must be approved by the NOSB. These products may display the certiﬁer’s logo but not the USDA organic logo.

-No Spray:

This term is used to indicate that no pesticides were sprayed on the crops themselves. However, this term is usually not 3rd party certified so you have to take the word of the grower. Chemical fertilizers and herbicides may have been sprayed on the soil before the crops were planted. The grower is using all organic methods, but has not done so for the required 3 years straight to receive organic certification. May or may not be certified transitional.

-Natural:

This label doesn’t really mean much except on meat and poultry, where the USDA says that the meat must not contain artificial ingredients such as dyes, preservatives, flavorings, antibiotics, and hormones. There is no certification or verification process for the use of this label, however, which means that it is largely unregulated. Before a product can be labeled “organic,” a government approved certifier must inspect the farm where the food or plants are grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Here are two commonly used organic certifiers:

Oregon Tilth Certiﬁed Organic (OTCO) California Certiﬁed Organic Farmers (CCOF)

Enforcement of these standards appears to be less rigorous on personal care products than on food products. Many personal care products claiming to be organic also contain synthetic and petroleum derived ingredients that have not been reviewed by the National Organics Standards Board.

he naturopathic doctor (N.D.) has completed four years of a graduate level, federally accredited medical program specializing in alternative and complementary medicine, and has passed a national licensing board exam. In the state of California, naturopathic doctors are licensed by the State of California Bureau of Naturopathic Medicine. Since 2005, licensed naturopathic doctors have been recognized as primary-care doctors.

LOTUS CAFE

otus Café is now my new favorite restaurant in the San Diego area. The ambiance inside is peaceful and serene, and their comforting food will leave you feeling healthier than when you came in. The owners, Johanna and her husband Carl, opened this delightful place in the Lumberyard shopping center in Encinitas in September of 2009. Both are dedicated yoga practitioners and have been vegetarians for 16 years. The name, Lotus Café, came to Carl after a morning meditation and the theme is carried throughout their restaurant with beautiful artwork and a soft spiritual vibe. Every aspect of Lotus Café was thought through with love and positive intentions from the fossilized bamboo flooring in the dining area and the recycled redwood tables outside, to the hand carved statue of Ganesha that greets people at the entrance.

lots of vegan and gluten-free choices. They do offer some poultry and fish (sustainably sourced) options for non-vegetarian patrons. The food is fresh, natural, and their prices are very reasonable. The selection of salads, sandwiches, pasta, and entrees are priced anywhere from $4.75 to $9.95. They also offer a fresh juice bar (squeezed to order), shakes, wheatgrass, acai bowls, and smoothies. Soups and vegan desserts, like chocolate and carrot cupcakes, are made fresh from scratch each morning. The curried cauliflower and chickpea soup is delicious, as is the lotus salad (a vibrant mix of organic baby leaf lettuce adorned with radish, jicama, sprouts, and other goodies). You get to choose a homemade dressing with the salads and the Tahini (sweet and delicious) and Tofu Dill (tangy) dressings are amazingly good.

The next time you are driving up the 101 through Encinitas, treat your mind, body, and spirit to a visit to this charming little café. It will likely become one of your favorites.

Bike With an average temperature of 71 degrees Fahrenheit, San Diego has one of the best climates for year-round bicycle commuting. In addition to being a green form of transportation, biking is also a really great form of exercise. For help finding safe bike routes around San Diego, visit www.ridelink.org where you will find a regional bike map and other resources that make it easier to get around on two wheels. Public Transportation No matter where you want to head in San Diego, there is a good chance that you can get there solely through the use of public transportation. If you have never taken public transportation before, you may have no idea how to begin planning a route. Luckily, there is an amazing resource online at www.511sd.com that will plan it all for you!
