the modern hippie SARA JAMESON OWNER
the perennial princess SHERRY BEAUDRY co-owner & garden designer Sherry Beaudry is a woman who is truly passionate about two things, horses and horticulture. Which of the two sit in first place? Well, it’s a close race. This equine enthusiast has been riding horses since 1972 and still continues to ride regularly to this day. Beaudry’s second passion is perennials. The self-proclaimed “Perennial Princess” is an avid horticulturalist having a diploma and a degree in horticulture from Sheridan College and the University of Guelph respectively. Her vast knowledge of plants and keen eye for design optimize her effectiveness in the landscaping industry. Beaudry shares this knowledge via her company, The Beaudry Group, based out of Dundas, Ontario. The Beaudry Group was founded by Sherry’s husband in 1976 and is one of the largest landscaping names in Southern Ontario to this day. She began her career by managing a grounds maintenance crew and will tell you that she is well practiced in keeping stubborn and hotheaded guys in check. While she admits there are definitely biases against women in the landscape industry, Beaudry also assures would-be female landscapers that with hard work, talent and determination, you will succeed. “As long as you swear… you’ll fit in just fine” she jokes. `On her time off, you will almost always find Beaudry with her horses. She’s working with one of her favourites these days: ‘I Forgot The Pie’. Sherry went out one afternoon to buy her husband a pie at his request. She got side tracked and came home a few hours later with a horse. She was very excited to share this news with her husband. “Nice horse”, he said, “but where’s my pie?” Beaudry has been working hard to prepare ‘I Forgot The Pie’ for the variety of horse shows he will compete in this year. Beaudry’s husband has not asked for pie in a very long time.

Anne Martin knows all about breaking into a trade that has been dominated by men since the beginning of time. Born in Folkestone, England to a teacher and an engineer, Martin dreamed of becoming an innkeeper as a little girl. Thankfully for Canadians, that didn’t work out. A grown up Martin has many talents up her sleeve. While living in England, she became versed in the fine art of cheese making as well as coffee roasting. As if that weren’t enough, Martin is also a trained chef. “Learning about wine seemed like a natural progression in my self-directed food knowledge

journey”, she says. Returning to Canada in the mid 90’s, she noticed there wasn’t much going on in the way of wine professionally so she persevered and became one of the first female sommeliers in Toronto. NL Mag thought we’d take advantage of our chance to pick Martin’s brain. Old man winter is hot on fall’s trail and at this time of year our diets tend to change. Light salads are replaced with heavier more starch filled foods; a plethora of squash, sweet potato, hearty stews and soups, lamb, roast beef, turkey…. our bodies seem to crave food and wine with more substantial
