Award Winning

Organic Skin Care Products Made Right Here in the Cariboo

If you haven’t had a chance to try any of the essential oils or skin care products from GREEN SISTERS then you’re missing out. GREEN SISTERS was awarded Best Organic Skin Care Company in British Columbia by the Canadian Business Awards 2017. Such a huge accomplishment for Billy Feistmantl, founder and creator of GREEN SISTERS. Not only are her products organic and made with love, they are available to us in health food stores right here in the Cariboo. We wanted Billy to share a little of her story with us. What inspired you to start making organic skin care products and when did it all begin? “I’ve always had a strong connection to essential oils and products made from them. A herbalist in Austria showed me how to make creams, lotions and tinctures. I was so impressed how the plants work for us humans, because I had some health issues then and this herbalist introduced me to the secret power of plants. After we settled down in the Cariboo, I found the passion to make my first investment and I spent $ 700.00 on organic essential oils. This was in 2009. In an old herbal book I saw that native people all over the world call plants our GREEN SISTERS and I had my company name.”

What do you love most about the work you do? “What I love most is creating new products and making products. I sit in my “ laboratory “, have good music on and I invite the Spirits in. It becomes peaceful and I find myself being guided through the scents. I am very blessed to work with these gifts from Mother Earth.” Tell us about your favourite Green Sisters product. “Choosing a favourite GREEN SISTERS product is like asking a mother who her favourite child is. My products are my children. I go a long time pregnant with the ideas, then I start the first process and finally I test it on my skin. Yes, I love and use them all.” Where can we find Green Sisters products in the Cariboo? “I am very happy that I had the opportunity from the beginning to sell my products first at Higher Ground, in 100 Mile House, next was The Hobbit House in Williams Lake, then Green Tree in Quesnel, and Ave Maria in Prince George. After 7 years of working with these shops, I can say all the

ladies are my friends now and we always have a good time when we are together.” You must be thrilled about receiving the Best Organic Skin Care Company award! Where do you see Green Sisters in the future? Will you be expanding distribution? Expanding your product line? “Yes, I am thrilled, and I want to thank my daughters and my husband, as they are part of my success. As my first business rule is “never give up!”, I will definitely go ahead and create new products and try to combine Spirit and Business and expand as far as I can as my products are serving a Higher Calling.”

Citrus Twist

If winter has left you feeling a little blue, then try one of these spring essential oil blends every day for the next few weeks and welcome the new season into your home! Nothing says spring like the scent of citrus in the air. As buds start to develop into beautiful flowers and fresh fruit on fruit trees, their uplifting and happy scents are carried through the air. In fact, did you know that the scent of citrus can instantly perk you up and boost your spirits? GREEN SISTERS has a Citrus Bliss Blend that is perfect for filling your home with the magical scents of spring. Or you can blend your own using a revitalizing blend of sweet orange, grapefruit and lemon.

Fresh Laundry

3 DIY Renewing

Spring Scents with Essential Oils

Many of us find laundry a tedious chore, but there’s no denying that the smell of fresh laundry is strangely comforting. Perhaps it reminds you of your childhood when mom used to hang laundry on the clothes line on a bright spring morning, or maybe the fresh, clean scent of laundry reminds you of warmer weather. Whatever the case may be, we want you to enjoy the scent of fresh laundry whenever you want and not only when your clothes are dirty! To recreate the scent of fresh laundry in your home simply diffuse 4 drops of rosemary with 5 drops of soothing lavender and allow this fresh and comforting mist to fill your home.

Spring Renewal If you are over the short, cold days of winter then you aren’t alone. Spring has arrived and there’s no better way to invite it into your home than by enhancing the scents of the season.

Spring is a time of renewal so why not refresh stale air in your home too? Peppermint is an excellent oil for waking you up and helping you to focus and grapefruit helps to uplift your environment thanks to it’s invigorating scent.

All you need is a diffuser, a few essential oils, and time to put your feet up to take in these refreshing scents of a fresh spring morning.

Simply diffuse 4 drops of peppermint with 3 drops of grapefruit for the perfect spring detox blend.

ASK

an expert Q:

“Is there a more natural approach to dealing with my seasonal allergies?”

Dr. Elizabeth Wilson Naturopathic Physician Quesnel Naturopathic Clinic

A:

Allergy season is here once again. We all know the symptoms: itchy watery eyes, minimally productive cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, post nasal drip, sneezing and itching. Allergic Rhinitis often occurs in a typical seasonal pattern, referred to as hay fever, whereas year-round allergic rhinitis is often triggered by indoor allergens such as dust mites or animal dander, and is more common but less dramatic. Common allergens include pollens, molds, animal dander, dust mites and cockroaches. Of course, we want to identify triggers. If you know what your allergies are, you can minimize your exposure. Environmental control for both allergens and nonspecific irritants is the first line of therapy. The bedroom and other rooms where substantial amounts of time are spent should be focused upon. If bothered by dust or dust mites, reduce exposure to dust mite irritants with mattress and pillow covers, removing stuffed animals and other plush items and washing linens in hot water every 1-2 weeks. Replace pillows if you’ve had them for more than five years, and your mattress if more than ten years old. Change your pillowcase every night, remove carpets and use a HEPA air filter in your bedroom. If bothered by pet dander, do not allow pets in the bedroom. Lastly, keep humidity below 50% to discourage mold and dust mites. The mast cell is the key culprit in creating these allergy symptoms. Mast cells are cells of the immune system that contain histamine, leukotrienes and other cytokines. When mast cells are triggered by certain mechanisms, they release their contents. When they release their contents, we experience allergy symptoms. If we can help stabilize the mast cell, it will result in fewer allergy symptoms. Mast cell stabilization and histamine degradation can be helped by including the right forms of quercetin, nettles, antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamin C. A diet rich in antioxidants can be beneficial since antioxidants strengthen cell walls, preventing the release of cytotoxic substances. A balanced mix of antioxidants works best. Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine that works by promoting the nonenzymatic breakdown of histamine.

6

discoverwellnessbc.ca

Mast cells are found in the respiratory and digestive tracts and thus there is often a dietary component related to the severity of one’s allergies. The mast cell’s wall is made of lipoproteins which come from our diet. Fats we eat are incorporated into the mast cell’s wall, and reactivity can be influenced by the fat composition of the cell membrane. High levels of arachidonic acid (AA) can increase the reactivity of the mast cell’s membrane, thus resulting in more allergy symptoms. Eating a diet predominantly of meat, refined grains and fast food increases AA levels. Clinical experience has shown that taking a naturopathic approach can reduce allergy symptoms. Naturopaths use a variety of tools to help reduce allergies. Restoring intestinal integrity will help to minimize the severity of the reactions as well as promote a balanced immune system. In addition to emunctory support, homeopathic remedies, herbal remedies, nutraceuticals like essential fatty acids, antioxidants vitamins C, A, E, D and B12/folate, bioflavonoids, probiotics, desensitization techniques, and decreasing the body's total burden by avoiding food intolerances and inflammatory or synthetic substances all help to reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms. Why should you bother to take such a comprehensive approach to your allergies when you can simply grab a Benadryl, you might wonder? Benadryl, or diphenhydramine, is an anticholinergic drug. There is emerging evidence that shows this drug class causes harm to the brain. Studies have examined the physical changes that serve as the catalyst for cognitive decline in association with anticholinergic use. Anticholinergic drug users showed lower levels of glucose metabolism, a biomarker for brain activity. Other researchers found that drugs with a weak anticholinergic effect cause cognitive changes when taken continuously for as few as 90 days. There are other options to Benadryl, which may be needed at times to control symptoms but they do not address underlying or causative factors. When you take a holistic approach, you are strengthening the terrain of the body, making the immune system stronger and less reactive. Additionally, you receive body-wide health benefits from improving your nutritional status and reducing your inflammatory load.

The

Chili Chaga Dynamic Duo...in beer?

New brew on tap... while it lasts!

Many of us have been informed about the health benefits of red chili peppers and chaga mushroom however, since Barkerville Brewing Co. in Quesnel is combining chili, chaga and beer, we thought we’d give you a little refresher. Did we say “chili, chaga and beer”? We sure did! Are these health benefits still intact once undergoing the beer brewing process? Well, we can’t say for sure but hey...tinctures use alcohol to extract key nutrients do they not? And fermentation unlocks nutrients does it not? Everything in moderation.

The Chili

These hot peppers have been used as food and medicine for thousands of years. Habanero, chipotle, jalapeno and cayenne are just a few popular varieties. Capsaicin is the phytonutrient responsible for the chili’s phenomenal health properties.

Meditative Art

The

in Coloring

Let’s face it, mindfulness meditation can be hard. Our lives are fast paced, busy and full of distraction. So I understand when my clients tell me that they “just can’t find time” to be mindful or sit down and meditate. When we spend most of our time on the go, sitting still and just being seems out of the question. Cultivating mindfulness can feel like work. In comes mindful coloring. Mindful coloring is the art of tapping into your inner child; sitting down and coloring an (usually) intricate, soothing picture. Taking the time to select your perfect color, being mindful of each stroke, usually thinking of nothing more than, “what would make this look awesome?” I recommend mindful coloring to everyone, but particularly to people who find that more traditional forms of mindfulness are just too hard. How is this mindfulness? Coloring really is about being in the moment. I have been told by many people how they just suddenly find that an hour or two have passed, lost in perfecting their coloring skills. As I see it, it is this present moment awareness, this shutting out of everything except what is right in front of you, that best represents mindfulness. The goal and purpose of a mindfulness practice is to not live in the future and not dwell on the past. In coloring, we can find a release, a focal point, which takes up just enough of our attention that we rarely think of anything else, but not so much that it is an exhausting practice. This is the crux of a mindful approach; being here now, wherever that here may be. Tapping into the inner child, into that sheer joy of beautifying something and being engrossed in it, is a winning prescription for health and mental balance. Try it! This page is yours to colour!

gardening made simple by Jean Atkinson Richbar Golf and Gardens

Whether you are downsizing your vegetable garden or are a busy first time gardener, why not try growing vegetables in patio pots? It is amazing what you can grow on your deck, plus it can look attractive with some edible flowers such as viola planted alongside your vegetables or herbs. Large pots (minimum 14-16” width and depth) are a must for growing tomatoes and cucumbers. For these thirsty, heavy-feeding plants, soil volume is crucial. If the container is too small, it will be constantly drying out and you will be constantly watering. You can grow herbs such as chives, thyme and oregano in shallower containers such as window boxes. Don’t forget that you should use a commercial potting soil in containers, not your own garden soil, as it is too heavy, inhibits root growth and slows the uptake of nutrients. A gardener’s best friend is a frost protection cloth. It is a lightweight fabric that can be reused for many years. It has many functions in the garden. The cloth is laid loosely over the plants and secured at the edges. The cloth is going to help raise the soil temperature while it allows light and water to penetrate. Raising the ground temperature gives the Cariboo gardener a jump on our short growing season. Raised beds will also help the soil warm up faster and will provide better drainage for the plants.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. enjoy playing in the dirt and let nature take it’s course..

Ahhhh…. gardening. It has so many benefits, which I’m sure you are all familiar with. Growing your own vegetables provides your family with healthy nutritious food. Weeding, mowing, digging and raking are full-out exercises and no gym membership is required. Digging in the earth, smelling the flowers, sitting back and admiring your little piece of paradise are just a few of the stress relievers provided by gardening.

speaks to you and restores your energy in this most wonderful of pastimes.

But maybe the Zen-like ahhhhh is more of an AUGHHHHHH when your thoughts turn to gardening. I hear this common cry when speaking with both new gardeners and well- seasoned ones. The new gardeners want to do it all, as seen on HGTV, but get overwhelmed in the process. The master gardeners feel like gardening has just become a chore, a ball and chain, so to speak. I hope the following advice

The cloth also protects the plants underneath from any insects that have ideas of laying their eggs in the soil or munching on your plants. It also provides about 3-4 degrees of frost protection, which might just be the one thing that finishes off not only plants but also gardeners. Get into the habit of checking the weather during April and May; remember, you are a farmer now. Once the plants under the cloth begin to flower, the cloth can be removed so insect pollinators can do their job. Fold up your cloth and store away for next spring. If you take anything away from this, I would like it to be: keep it simple. It’s truly the most important thing I learned

while studying landscape/horticulture, and it can be applied to all aspects of gardening, from vegetables to trees. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Rather than having a multitude of small patio pots or hanging baskets everywhere, pare it down to a few large pots or baskets. These will require less watering and will look far better health-wise and aesthetically. A well-maintained small landscape looks more impressive than an overgrown, rambling one. De-cluttering is not only for the inside of your home. If your yard has become a real chore and has gotten away on you, it’s time to scale back or hire a professional to get you back on track and look after it for you. We reduced our own lawn under our fruit trees by removing the turf and creating a large border of mulch. This stopped the cursing and dodging of branches while trying to mow in an awkward area. A low maintenance edge was created between the lawn and native trees. The three inches of mulch reduces the weeds and retains moisture in the ground. If you are planning a new garden or revising an established one, it is important to take some measurements down and note the site’s exposure of sun or shade. It is easy to get carried away at a nursery and buy one of everything that catches your eye. When you plant one of everything your eye will not know where to focus. A simple planting plan is much more calming and will be easier to look after.

Try going barefoot next time you’re in the garden. It could improve your health! Reconnection with the Earth’s electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being. Earthing (or grounding) refers to the discovery of benefits— including better sleep and reduced pain—from walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems that transfer the Earth’s electrons from the ground into the body.

Journal of Environmental and Public Health: Earthing: Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth’s Surface Electrons

I think the most common mistake most gardeners make is not taking time to read the plant tag. This has a wealth of information on it. Pay attention to the height and width of the plant, plus what its water and light requirements are. Have patience: these shrubs and trees will reach their potential if the right conditions are in place. After a third growing season, shrubs should be spreading out, so if you hate to see bare spots in the landscape, fill them in with a few annuals for the short term. To reduce the amount of maintenance (such as pruning) in the landscape, look for dwarf varieties of shrubs. These have been bred to have the same attributes such as foliage and flowers, but do not grow as vigorously as the original plant. An example of this is Limelight Hydrangea and Little Lime Hydrangea. Limelight is one of my favorites because its flower plumes turn from a chartreuse green to white as the season progresses. However, it does take up a lot of room in the garden and needs to be trimmed back in the fall. Little Lime is a more compact form but still produces gorgeous flowers. We easily find the time each day to watch TV and check Facebook, clicking and scrolling the hours away. If only we could channel that energy into getting outside and tending to our gardens on a regular basis, we would reconnect with the earth and reap the benefits that gardens have to offer.

ergy EnOat Balls Ingredients 1 cup rolled oats (quick cooking) 1/2 cup milled flax seed 1/3 cup of honey 1/2 cup of almond butter or natural peanut butter 1 tbsp. vanilla 1/2 cup coconut (shredded and un-sweetend) 1/3 cup chocolate chips or carob chips

Energy balls are an excellent grab and go snack that have become popular due to their simple preparation and advantage of being packed with tons of every day essential nutrients.   Depending on what ingredients are in them, these bad boys can be just what someone needs to snack on after a workout, or to tie you over until lunch. Pssssssst – and you don’t have to bake them.

Instructions Place all ingredients into a bowl or food processor and mix well. Wet hands, or use rubber gloves and roll into balls (using approximately 3/4 tbsp per). Place into a container and store in your fridge or freezer for your convenience. Makes about 20, so double that recipe if you’d like!
