Changing the World

Child by Child

Look around, or read the news, and it’s hard not to see that we are experiencing a crisis of connection, a decline of empathy. In a world where our differences increasingly tend to alienate us from one another, we need to build empathy so we can find our shared humanity. Empathy builds understanding, connection and inclusion. We all ache to belong and those who feel excluded from society very often retaliate with societal or domestic violence. The Roots of Empathy organization is an answer to this crisis. We start with the children - our future. Roots of Empathy’s mission is to build caring, peaceful, and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults. Roots of Empathy was founded in 1996 and has a deep and rich history in British Columbia. In fact, BC was one of the first provinces to embrace Roots of Empathy programs and co-piloted the Seeds of Empathy program, which is now delivered internationally.

What is empathy? Empathy is the ability to take the perspective of the other and to feel with them. When children learn to be empathic, they are less likely to be aggressive, to bully or to hurt others. They will challenge cruelty and injustice, creating more empathic and inclusive classrooms. Empathy builds connection between students and that connection ripples out to all of the relationship in their lives.

“Emotional literacy is a first and essential step in learning how to regulate emotions.” 4

discoverwellnessbc.ca

Roots of Empathy Roots of Empathy is delivered in elementary schools. At the heart of the program are a volunteer neighbourhood parent and baby who visit a classroom throughout the school year. A certified Roots of Empathy instructor, using an age-appropriate curriculum, guides the children to label the baby’s feelings and intentions. In this experiential learning, the baby is the “teacher” and a catalyst. The children learn to take the perspective of the baby and to feel with the baby. Emotional literacy develops as children begin to identify and label the baby’s feelings, reflect on and understand their own feelings, then the feelings of others. Emotional literacy is a first and essential step in learning how to regulate emotions. Children gain further experience in self-regulation as they observe the mother regulating the baby’s emotions. At the end of the year this change from within results in an increase in self-regulation, resilience, wellbeing and empathy. Children learn that we share the same feelings and that our feelings are the core of our humanity.

Seeds of Empathy Seeds of Empathy takes place in early learning centres, such as daycares and pre-schools, for children aged 3 – 5. Early childhood educators, rather than Roots of Empathy Instructors, deliver the program. In addition to family visits with a parent and baby, Seeds of Empathy uses quality children’s literature and an early literacy approach that is based on relationships and interactive activities. Stories help children explore their own feelings and take the perspective of others. This is crucial during the early years. Attitudes to reading are formed early through trusting relationships, which is what makes early childhood educators, who read the stories and guide the children to reflect on their feelings, such powerful role models. Seeds of Empathy prepares preschool children for the transition to kindergarten.

Why a baby? We believe that empathy is innate and flourishes or fades in the first year of life. The parent-child attachment relationship is where empathy develops. It is the first and most powerful model of empathy. If it goes awry, a child suffers from an empathy deficit, which may be transmitted generationally. All children in a classroom benefit from seeing the attachment relationship between a parent and baby in action – how the baby looks to the parent for guidance, how the parent watches for cues and responds lovingly - but for those children who may not have had a secure attachment relationship, it is an important opportunity to develop empathy – to see with their own eyes what love looks like.

The inspiration Social entrepreneur, Mary Gordon, founded Roots of Empathy in 1996. Previous to that, she founded Canada’s first and largest school-based Parenting and Family Literacy Centres in 1981. They have become public policy in Ontario, Canada, with hundreds of schools involved, and have been used as a best practice model internationally. While working at the centres, Mary realized that the common denominator in all forms of violence and cruelty, including bullying, is the absence of empathy. Roots of Empathy, and Mary Gordon, have been recognized numerous times for social innovation, and Mary consults with governments and organizations globally.

Research Since 2000, Roots of Empathy has been evaluated across three continents. These studies consistently find that Roots of Empathy children exhibit: • An increase in pro-social behavior (e.g. sharing, helping and including) • A decrease in aggression • An increase in social and emotional understanding • An increase in knowledge of parenting

In Quesnel and Williams Lake Roots of Empathy has been offering programs in BC since 1999 and for over 10 years in Williams Lake and Quesnel. In 2016-2017, there were 10 Roots of Empathy programs in Williams Lake, Kindergarten to Grade 6, and a Seeds of Empathy program at Little Moccasins Learning Centre. There were 8 Roots of Empathy programs in Quesnel in Kindergarten and Grade 1. Sheryl-Lynn Lewis is a Roots of Empathy Instructor and the local coordinator (key point person or KPP) for School District #27 Cariboo-Chilcotin. She sees the impact of the program in the community. “Our Roots of Empathy families have told me how special they feel when the students recognize them at the grocery store and tell their parents "This is our baby". The feeling of connection within the community grows. And it's wonderful to share your love of the baby with so many other eager young faces.” And “A parent of a grade 4 student old me a story: "We got a new puppy. My husband was rough housing with the puppy and our son told him not to shake the puppy because it might damage the puppy's brain." Robyn Anderson is a Roots of Empathy Instructor and the local coordinator (KPP) for School District #28 Quesnel. Over 1,100 children in the region have received the program over the past 10 years. “I'm proud to be a part of this incredible program. The excitement from the children when they see 'their' baby progress through milestones is so fantastic to witness. But then to be able to support the children in understanding how to transfer that excitement to themselves so that they can be proud of their own hard work, accomplishments, and determination just adds to the experience for me. I love that I can be a part of children's learning about emotions, relationships, and positive interactions with others.”

ASK

an expert Q: “I suffer from PMS every month and have for many years. Is there anything TCM can do to help? I have been told that this is normal and to just live with it. ?” Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a fantastic and effective modality for women suffering from PMS. TCM is an ancient modality that has been used for over 5000 years with great success. The TCM approach is to find the root cause and rebalance the energy systems, called meridians, to promote the body to heal itself. Meridians are pathways in the body that are all connected like rivers. If there are blockages in a river, it cannot flow properly. Rebalancing the meridians changes the flow of the “rivers,” or meridians. Our bodies are amazing in that, yes, they can heal when given the right support. I am a Touch for Health (TFH) practitioner using Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as muscle testing to balance the body. Muscle testing is used in TFH as biofeedback to ask the body where it needs rebalancing. Muscle testing is very gentle and a fun way to talk to your body. Our body begins with whispers or symptoms that we usually ignore, and if the whispers are left unchecked, they become louder. In TCM, the liver meridian has a major role to play in menstruation. The liver stores blood, controls blood flow and lymph movement, and detoxifies our body. Liver meridian is a wood element and fuels our fire connecting to our reproductive system. Too much or too little fire energy affects how our body runs. Imagine running your car at full throttle all day: eventually, it would take its toll. Things would begin to function improperly. This is very common in society today. We as practitioners refer to this as fight or flight. When the body gets stuck in this fight or flight mode, it can’t sustain this forever. The body also directs all its energy to survival when in this panic state instead of balancing hormones, digestion, immune function and other necessary body functions. In our fast-paced world, the liver is very overworked. Qi is our life force energy and when it becomes stagnant or stuck, it affects our healing abilities. PMS such as cramping, insomnia, heavy bleeding, tender breasts and irritability are all signs from our body that our hormones are out of balance. Cramping is a result of stuck energy because our body doesn’t have the energy, or Qi, and works harder to move the blood,

creating the cramping. The liver meridian is in charge of Qi and how it flows. That is why it is so important to smooth blood flow. Heavy bleeding and clotting also are signs of a stagnant flow. The liver can become overloaded with toxins and unable to perform its detoxification responsibilities, resulting in these uncomfortable PMS symptoms. Signs and symptoms vary from each person, which is why it is very important to tell your practitioner what is going on in your body. The major causes of stagnant Qi are stress, poor diet and toxins, including cigarettes, alcohol, pollution, toxic foods, toxic emotions, trauma, unresolved anger and lack of exercise. Applying acupressure to specific points on the meridians identified through muscle testing stimulate proper blood flow and lymph movement, which is where toxins can build up. Balancing unblocks energy and creates the flow needed by the body to rebalance Qi. This not only affects the liver meridian: it affects all meridians. The TCM meridian system treats the whole body, improving all areas: body, mind and spirit. Emotionally, a balanced liver will have strong mental focus and firm decision-making and will circulate blood and remove toxins efficiently. Menstrual cycles can become more comfortable and function improves, including maintaining regular periods, ovulation and fertility. Vision, nails and skin are also improved. Wood element is fuel for our fire, our life energy. Healing the liver helps our life force energy! In addition to acupressure, get regular exercise, avoid fatty foods and strive to reduce stress in order to help heal your liver meridian. Meditation, mindfulness practice, yoga and walking in the woods are other great ideas to help balance your body. Additionally, check into alternatives to synthetic medications such as herbs and supplements, including milk thistle, dandelion, turmeric and magnesium. Magnesium is a particularly practical supplement and has over 300 uses in the body, including muscle relaxation and mental relaxation. Hormone balancing supplements you might consider are ashwagandha, Vitex (chasteberry), adrenal support, omega 3, black cohosh, yam and dong quai. It’s important to speak with your healthcare professional before taking supplements and herbs. Talking about issues that bother us and not holding them in also prevents “stuck” energy. Becoming healthy can be a journey that teaches us about ourselves. Enjoy the journey, be curious and ask questions. Choose your health today!

Herbal Teas To Help You Stay

Healthy this Winter

- article courtesy of The Herbal Academy

Keeping our bodies healthy and strong during winter can be a challenge! Thankfully, there are many wonderful herbs we can use to provide the support we need. Prepared as tasty teas, these herbs can help support wellness right in your tea cup! Brewing up a cup of tea to enjoy is a wonderful form of selfcare, encouraging us to slow down and rest a bit while waiting as the herbs steep, giving their goodness to the water. Make herbal tea a part of your life and stay healthy this winter!

Stay Healthy This Winter with the Help of Herbs Common herbs used during the winter season include herbal allies such as ginger, cinnamon, hawthorn, rose hips, Echinacea, elderberry and flower, tulsi basil, Astragalus, and Calendula. Each of these herbs offer their own unique array of useful properties. Herbs can help to bolster the immune system; provide essential vitamin C and other nutrients; support digestion and good circulation; and also soothe the nerves and while encouraging a healthy response to stress. All of these actions are important for supporting wellness at any time of the year but especially during the winter!

Support the Immune System The basics of good health are most important to preventing illness during the winter. Good hand washing, healthy diet, exercise, plenty of sleep, and stress management—all with striving to fill our lives with meaning and joy—go a long way towards nourishing a deep vitality. However, we can get a helping hand from herbs by incorporating them as part of a healthy lifestyle. Certain herbs are known by herbalists to have immunomodulating and immunostimulating actions. These herbs are used during the winter months to help “enhance the body’s natural defense system to assist in infectious conditions or other situation which tax the immune system” (Tilgner, 1999, p. 23). Some examples include Astragalus, Echinacea, elderberry, ginger, Calendula, garlic, hyssop, licorice, holy basil, and medicinal mushrooms. Berry and Flower Spice Tea was created with immunomodulating and immunostimulating herbs. Drunk frequently, this tea can help you to stay healthy this winter.

Berry and Flower Spice Tea

This recipe makes one big mug of tasty herbal tea. Ingredients 1 teaspoon dried elderberry berries 1 teaspoon dried holy basil leaves 1 teaspoon dried Calendula flowers 1 teaspoon dried rose petals 1 teaspoon cinnamon chips or 1 cinnamon stick ½ teaspoon dried ginger root or ½” chopped fresh ginger root 12 oz boiling hot water Directions • Place all the herbs in a heatproof container and cover with boiling hot water. • Let steep for 15 to 30 minutes. • Strain and serve with honey if desired

Help Ease Stress and Encourage Healthy Sleep Stress has a profound effect on the immune system and can be a “significant contributor to immune dysfunction” (Romm, 2001, p. 195). Lack of sleep, which often goes along with increased stress, also has a negative effect on the immune system, and in fact research has found that there is “surprisingly strong evidence that sleep enhances immune defense” (Besedovsky et al., 2012). Herbs can be very helpful for inducing a sense of calm in the body, mind, and spirit. Even just the simple act of making and drinking a cup of warm tea is relaxing. Nervine herbs often have nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and B vitamins that help to feed the nervous system. Examples of nervine herbs include chamomile, linden, milky oats, skullcap, rose, passionflower, lemon balm, and valerian. Enjoy drinking a nice warm cup of tea rich in nervines before bed to help relieve the stress of the day and encourage deep sleep. Adaptogens are also used by herbalist to assist in promoting a healthy response to stress, including stress on the immune system. Herbalists David Winston and Steven Maimes explain that “adaptogens have a focused effect on immunity and the immune system. They help to counter chronic immune cell depletion, and they improve the body’s defenses” (Winston & Maimes, 2007, p. 74). Look to herbs such as schisandra, licorice,

ashwagandha, cordyceps, holy basil, and eleuthero which are wonderful examples of adaptogenic herbs. Enjoy teas made with adaptogens and nervines on a regular basis to stay healthy this winter and help curb the negative effects of stress.

Calming Linden Tea

This recipe makes one big mug of tasty herbal tea, perfect to enjoy before bed or anytime a little calm is needed. Ingredients 2 teaspoons dried linden leaf and flower 1 teaspoon dried spearmint 1 teaspoon dried Calendula flowers 1 pinch catnip leaf 1 pinch lavender blossoms 12 ounces boiling hot water Directions • Place all the herbs in a heatproof container and cover with boiling hot water. • Let steep for 15 to 30 minutes. • Strain and serve with honey if desired

Spicy Tea Blends to Support Digestion & Circulation Maintaining good digestive health can help you stay healthy this winter. It may surprise you find out that the much of our immune system is actually located in the gut. “The gastrointestinal system plays a central role in immune system homeostasis… and almost 70% of the entire immune system” is found within the GI tract (Vighi et al., 2008). Good digestion is essential for the assimilation of nutrients into the body and healthy circulation helps to distribute those nutrients to cells while increasing energy and warmth. Ginger is a well-known herb often used for supporting digestion and increasing circulation. “Ginger is a warming herb with a fiery nature. By stimulating circulation and energy, it enhances the ‘fire’ in the body that supports digestion, heart health, immunity, and reproductive system vigor and balance” (Ginger, n.d., para. 2). Herbs that have warming, carminative, and digestive properties can be brewed up into delicious teas to help support healthy digestion and circulation thereby promoting overall wellness during the wintertime. Look to yummy blends that feature herbs such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, turmeric, rosemary, mints, thyme, anise, and black pepper. Rich in aromatic oils, many of these herbs also assist the body in fighting infections and easing inflammation.

Minty Ginger Tea

Makes one quart of spicy warming tea to enjoy! Ingredients 2” to 3” fresh ginger root, roughly chopped 1 tablespoon peppermint or spearmint leaves 1 tablespoon chamomile flowers 1 quart plus ¼ cup water Directions • Place the water and ginger root in a pot. • Bring to a simmer over medium high heat. • Reduce the heat and cover. Let simmer for 20 to 30 minutes • Remove from the heat and add the mint. Replace the cover and steep for another 10 to 15 minutes. • Add the chamomile and steep for 4 to 8 minutes. The chamomile will become bitter with longer steeping times. While the bitter flavor can be healthful some people don’t enjoy it, so steep for less time if needed. • Strain the herbs from the tea and add honey to taste.

Tasty Nutrient Rich Tea Blends Many herbs have high vitamin and mineral content offering a wonderful nutrient boost that supports overall vitality. Water does an wonderful job of extracting these nutrients making the tea cup a wonderful place to get excellent nourishment. Incorporating nutrient rich herbs into your lifestyle will help give your body the nutrients it needs to stay healthy this winter. Examples of nutrient rich, nourishing herbs include nettles, rose hips, red clover, alfalfa, oatstraw, chamomile, mints, and many more!

High Calcium & Vitamin C Infusion

Adapted from Rosemary Gladstar Ingredients 3 teaspoons dried rose hips 2 teaspoons dried lemon balm leaf 2 teaspoons dried oatstraw 1 teaspoon dried nettle leaf 1 teaspoon dried raspberry leaf ½ teaspoon cinnamon chips 1 quart boiling hot water Directions • Place the herbs in a jar and cover with the boiling hot water. • Cover and let steep for up to one hour. • Strain and enjoy with honey if desired.

As you can see, it’s easy to enjoy the advantages of hot, tasty teas during the winter. These delicious brews keep us warm while also adding the wonderful benefits of herbs into our lives. Enjoy inviting herbs into your tea cup and stay healthy this winter while making the most out of this season of cold and dark! For more herbal tea recipes to visit www.theherbalacademy.com

Miso Ramen with

Bone Broth

www.staceydeering.com Serves 2 4 cups bone broth (chicken or beef) 2 ‘cakes’ of Lotus Foods, ramen noodles 1 heaping tablespoon miso paste a few dashes of fish sauce 2 teaspoons grated ginger 1 tablespoon tamari, gluten-free 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil Chinese broccoli, about 6 pieces 2 soft boiled eggs 1 chili pepper, thinly sliced Thai basil, 6 leaves, thinly sliced Green onions/scallions, thinly sliced Directions: For boiling your eggs, I like a 6 minute soft boiled egg for this soup. If you are taking your eggs right from the fridge remember they will need a little longer to cook. Peel the eggs and carefully cut in half. Heat the broth in a saucepan over low heat until hot, not boiling. Add the ginger, fish sauce, tamari, sesame oil and lastly miso paste. Stir to combine. Allow to simmer while preparing other ingredients. Place the dry ramen noodles in a bowl and pour boiling water over the noodles. I let them sit for 5 minutes while preparing the soup. Drain when ready to place in the hot broth. Add your greens and simmer for a few minutes to cook the greens. Ladle the broth into two large soup bowls. Add the ramen noodles, top with the egg, green onions, chili and basil.
