The Princess’ Rock Band/ Prinsessans rockband by Per Gustavsson

The Princess goes Blues Brothers! In the sixth book about the popular Princess she meets Princess Vera who has just built a dance floor but has trouble finding musicians who are willing to play there. The Princess decides to get her old band back together. The band once split up because the Dragon, the band drummer, became so fired up when he played that he used to set both the audience and their instruments on fire. But now she tracks down her former band mates – familiar characters from the previous books – and reunites the band. They turn out to be a big success and Princess Vera is happy because, as usual, our Princess finds a way to keep the Dragon firing away without either setting the dance floor on fire or causing forest fires.

The idea to write about princesses came when Per’s daughter Kajsa declared that princesses only marry and have children - but of course princesses do much, much more. The Princess website: www.prinsessor.nu

Picture book My Wild Life/ Mitt vilda liv by Amanda Eriksson One morning in the middle of July my mother put me on a train to visit Grandpa up north. It takes five hours to get there! So terribly long. But it’s worth it. Because Grandpa’s house is no ordinary house. It’s a cot. Grandpa has built it all by himself. At night it’s pitch black. And very, very quiet. It’s so quiet that it shrieks in your ears. Sometimes it’s so quiet and so black that you don’t think you exist anymore. But this summer I really felt that I existed. A suggestive and adequately nerve-tickling picture book about all the exciting things one can experience in the real wilderness. Release date: March 2011. 32 pages.

Beetles, Baboons and other Egyptian Gods/ Skalbaggar, babianer och andra egyptiska gudar by Malin Lilja (text) and Thomas Fröhling (illustration) In many old cultures there were gods for different purposes and the gods had the same feelings and the same characteristics as people, although with supernatural powers of course. There were gods for every possible need; one that you could pray to if there was no water, one if somebody got sick and one if you wanted to become wiser. The Egyptian gods could transform into any animal they wanted to, which was quite useful. If a god wanted to seem kind it transformed into a cuddly cat, but it might as well become a dangerous crocodile or a bloodthirsty lion. Then you needed to watch out! Get to know the sun god Ra, bloodthirsty Hathor, wise Imhotep and many more.

Malin Lilja shares her apartment in Stockholm with her daughter and two fat male cats and works as an editor of children’s books. She has also written a popular Easy Reader book about mummies.

Picture book Sandy, Larry Lost and Other Monsters around Town/ Sandy, Villy Vilse och andra monster på stan by Andreas Palmaer and Per Gustavsson

Creepy things only happen at night. When you’re alone in the dark, right? Wrong! In the first book about monsters (Ghosts and Monsters/Sopnedgasten) we found monsters hiding in every nook and corner of the home. But they can be found out on the streets as well! This book is about the scary monsters that hide at the bottom of the sandbox, inside the football, in the elevator and on top of the escalator. And monsters like Larry Lost, whose specialty is to make you lose your way, and Ronnie Rumble who will make the sunniest day wash away. This is an entertaining and moderately scary book for 3-6 year olds.

To learn to read is like discovering life on every planet in the universe. Each book is a new world to explore. We want to avoid big obstacles in the text but still make the adventure worthwhile for the little explorer. The child and her/his capacity is in focus. To inspire the child to keep reading and embrace every new challenge until the whole universe is within reach.

Graphic Novel 12+ De tusende/One in Thousand by Petter Lidbeck (text) and Max Elmberg Sjöholm (illustrations) “The first year doctors from the mainland came to examine us. As if we carried a secret they wanted to lay their hands on. They wore protective clothing, respirators, thick gloves and safety equipment. It was before they knew that survivors are the biggest carriers of contagion. A couple of days later they came back without the protective clothing but with black blisters. Today they are smoke and ashes.” The author weaves an apocalyptic story where the narrator is one of the survivors. He and his best friend Mercer help each other to remember what it was like on the mainland, when everything was still normal. Before the plague. Most people die fast but one out of a thousand survives. The survivors are condemned to a life of isolation and slavery on an island where they get to do the dirty work of transporting the ill people from the mainland and to bury the bodies once they are dead. Among the survivors is Gecko. He is fed up with the situation. Why are we punished is the question he can’t stop asking. At times he even feeds the oven with sick people, they are soon to die anyhow, he thinks. Mercer and the captain don’t like the ideas Gecko spreads out, they know that the people on the mainland are depending on them for their survival. The captain has a daughter, still on the mainland, and to see her healthy, waving from the other side keeps his hope up. But one day she climbs onto the boat. The three young men are all drawn to her and the situation is carried to extremes.

Petter Lidbeck was born in Helsingborg in 1964. He now lives in Stockholm and is an author of children’s books and a journalist. Petter Lidbeck has written numerous picture books and chapter books for all ages.
