A historic walk through Reutte
A historic walk through Reutte
original location. On the facade of the new secondary school is the sgraffito ‘Siege of Ehrenberg’. After a few metres you come to the hotel/guesthouse ‘Zum Mohren’ – Untermarkt 26. Gasthof ‘Zum Mohren’ is one of the long-established guesthouses in Reutte; even from 1646 it was a guesthouse/brewery. In 1765 the owner, Joseph Wagner, was mentioned in council minutes as ‘holding landlord at the Mohrenkopf’. In the course of time the names of the hosting families have indeed changed, yet the name of the guesthouse remained unchanged. The original guesthouse signpost can today be seen in our local history museum ‘Grünes Haus’ (Untermarkt 25). Next door is ‘Tauscher Haus’ – Untermarkt 24. The so-called ‘Tauscher Haus’ dates from the 18th century. The fresco of the ‘Immaculata’ (depiction of Mary of the Immaculate Conception) beneath the gable of the house is dated around 1780 and has been attributed to the well-known Reutte Baroque painter Johann Jakob Zeiller. The bourgeois house was named after its former owner, the businessman and mayor of Reutte, Karl Ludwig Tauscher (1827 – 1897). Since 1930 the building has been owned by the community of Reutte.
A historic walk through Reutte
Diagonally opposite is the re-designed ‘Zeiller Platz’ – a pleasing, relaxing area in the middle of Untermarkt – surrounded by the historic buildings of the former ‘Untere Salzstadel’, the ‘Zeiller Haus’ and the ‘Grabherr Haus’.
Start your circuit at our office, The Tourist Information Office for the Naturparkregion Reutte (Untermarkt 34) – we will accompany you on your stroll through our lovely local town providing information which we have taken from the book ‘Reutte – 500 year old market town: 1489 – 1989’.
To start with: the Untermarkt area While walking through the park facilities in Untermarkt you get to see a cast iron fountain which has decorative elements, dating from the year 1907. It is one of the many historic fountains which enhance the landscape of Reutte today and which was restored to mark the 500 year anniversary of the market and put back in its 30

Salt Stock in Reutte ‘Untere Salzstadel’ – Untermarkt 31: the ‘Untere Salz stadel’ was located in today’s office and residential building up until the end of the 18th century. Soon after written approval from Duke Sigismund in 1471 a salt depot made out of wood was set up in Unterreutte; in 1712 a new building was constructed out of stone. There was a charge for storing the salt containers for the owner, the parish of Breitenwang. When the salt trade stagnated, the ‘Untere Salzstadel’ was used between the years of 1778 – 1841 as a custom house (‘Dogana Stadel’) for the transport of goods to and from Füssen. Since that time, the building with its characteristic hipped roof has been privately owned.
The painting family, the Zeillers ‘Zeiller Haus’ also known as ‘Schöne Haus’ (Zeiller- Platz 2) was spared by the major fires in Reutte in 1703 and 1704. There are still fragments of frescoes visible on the south side of the building, which date from around 1600. The façade paintings on the other three sides of the building – particularly worthy of emphasis are the frescoes on the gable side – were created in 1776 and are by Baroque painter Johann Jakob Zeiller (1708 – 1783). His father and first teacher, Paul Zeiller (1658 – 1738), inherited this house from his father Christoph. Paul Zeiller, who set up the Außerfern school of painting, also taught his nephew, Franz Anton Zeiller (1716 – 1794), and had his painting workshop here. His famous son Johann Jakob was born in this house.
Amble through the traffic-calmed Untermarkt ‘Grabherr Haus’ – Zeiller-Platz 1: Also part of the former guesthouse ‘Zur goldenen Rose’ (Untermarkt 29), was the ‘Turm’ (Untermarkt 27) and ‘Zeiller Haus’. In the 15th century the entire property was in the ownership of the long-established Reutte family, the Klainhann’s. In the 2nd half of the 17th century, it was purchased by wealthy Reutte citizen and salt factor Christoph Zeiller and for a few generations it was owned by the Zeiller family. A fire in 1704 completely destroyed the inn. 32
A historic walk through Reutte
The building as it is today was completed in 1737 and was used as an inn and as accommodation. Between 1754 – 1782 it was the headquarters of the district governor of Oberinntal, an administrative district, which more or less takes in today’s districts of Reutte, Imst and Landeck. Between the years of 1806 – 1814 the ‘Königlich Bayerische Rentamt’ (the royal Bavarian financial offices) were in this building. After the end of Bavarian rule, the house was in the possession of business men: Grabherr, Senetin and Hösle. The façade painting with the richly adorned trompe-l’oeil architectural portal frame dates from around 1800. On the longitudinal façade of the building, on the middle window, a medallion with a rose and a plate of food with a wine jug, which is held by two putti, still allude to the Weinwirtshaus ‘Zur güldenen Rosen’. At the end of the longitudinal side of the ‘Grabherr Haus’ is the ‘Turm’ (the ‘tower’) – Untermarkt 27. The ‘Turm’ is probably the oldest preserved building in Reutte. The rooms on the first floor were used as accommodation for people travelling through the area. Even E mperor Friedrich III., the father of Maximilian I., was said to have stayed here in 1488 when he was travelling through.
The ‘Grünes Haus’ – historic building and museum Walk further and you come to the ‘Grünes Haus’ – Untermarkt 25. The ‘Grünes Haus’ is said to date from the 2nd half of the 16th century, as Renaissance paintings recently discovered on the 2nd floor attest. The prosperous Sisters of Strelle have been proven to be the owners around the middle of the 18th century. It was probably on their behest that Johann Jakob Zeiller created the façade paintings decorations in 1779 on a green background. Under the gable, around the middle window, is a symmetrical depiction of the ‘Holy Trinity’ on clouds. Architectural paintings, such as the light portal, columns on the corners, cornices and herma pilaster on the crowned cartouche windows adorn the building. It was probably around 1800 that the wrought iron Rococo style window boxes came about. In the years 33

impressive ‘Mittelflurhaus’. His son, the affluent landlord, Jakob Mang Ammann, moved the brewery in 1774 to one of the guesthouses in the neighbourhood, the ‘Goldenes Kreuz’ (Untermarkt 18) in an annex of the ‘Goldene Rose’.
‘Grünes Haus’
between 1821 and 1918 the townhouse was owned by the post master’s family, the Angerers (the owners of the large guesthouse ‘Zur Post’ which was located next door at the time). The district of Reutte purchased the house in 1986 from a private owner. The house was extensively restored in 1989 for the Tyrol National Exhibition, marking 500 years the elevation of Reutte to ‘market town’ status. For this outstanding regeneration, the building was awarded the international ‘Europa Nostra’ diploma. Since 1990 Reutte’s museum of local history has been accommodated in the rooms in the building. As well as the exposed Renaissance paintings and the exquisite stucco ceiling, dated around 1720/30, the museum provides an interesting insight into the development of arts and handcrafts in the Außerfern. Well worth a visit!
Guesthouses in the historic town centre Diagonally opposite is ‘Rose’ – Untermarkt 16. The former brewery/guesthouse ‘Zur goldenen Rose’ is said to have got its name around 1800 from the public house ‘Zur güldenen Rosen’, when it set up a hospitality business. According to lore, in 1724 JohannAmmann established an old Gothic building structure above the 34
On the same street at the end of Untermarkt is the ‘Goldene Hirsch’ – MühlerStraße 1. The guesthouse close to the market square ‘Zum goldenen Hirschen’, is one of the oldest guesthouses in Reutte. In 1615 Christoph Zeiller, father of Baroque painter Paul Zeiller, purchased the wine tavern for his large family. The guesthouse remained in the hands of the eminent Zeiller family for over a century and was then taken on by the Geisenhof family, who finally in 1782 were granted a ‘Bräustattrecht’. The brewing business continued until 1906, although in the interim the brewery/guesthouse had changed hands.
Dengel Haus, Strahlenburg Castle Diagonally to the left, opposite the main road, you can see one of the loveliest houses in Reutte, ‘Dengel Haus’ – Obermarkt 3. Dengel Haus was built in 1704 by the ‘business trader’ Johann Ammann in an extensive pasture area. The marble coat of armour for the comm ercial business can be seen above the entrance portal. Until 1780 stayed in the hands of the affluent Reutte business family, the Ammanns, who used the building as a business trading building and as a guesthouse, the ‘Zum schwarzen Bären’. The subsequent owners, the Strelle family from Löwenberg and Strahlenburg, also worked here as large scale manufacturers, beer brewers and landlords. The family’s prosperity can be seen in the particularly impressive façade of the property, which they commissioned around 1800. The paintings, in the contemporary Empire style of that era, border the windows and stand out tastefully from the green background. Excellently worked Rococo window baskets with lots of detail decorate the gable side of the building. The excellent decorative wrought iron work – some of the nicest of this kind in the Außerfern – are attributed to Ehrwald master-worker, Johann Franz Guem. The building was owned by the Strelle family until 1821, then it changed hands often thereafter. In 1920 Dr. Ignaz Philipp Dengel, a scholar and local 35

historian from Außerfern, inherited the house, which has been named after him to this day. When renovation was carried out, Dengel had his coat of arms apply to the bay on the north side of the house. The renovation work is referred to in a maxim by Tyrolean dialect poet, Bruder Willram. According to a testamentary decree, Professor Dengel handed ownership of the house to the community of Reutte in 1955 with the condition that it should be used for social and cultural purposes. This was fulfilled by the market town district authority with the setting up of the so-called ‘Dengel Galerie’ in the old vaults on the ground floor, where exhibitions are regularly shown.
In Obermarkt: ‘Markt-Gemeindeamt’ – the market town offices Immediately in front of ‘Dengel Haus’ is the ‘Markt- Gemeindeamt’ – Obermarkt 1. The ‘Marktgemeinde amt’ building stands on history-laden soil. In 1491 the citizens of Reutte set up a granary and a town hall in this area, which in the time followed was continually developed and extended. The ground floor of the building was used to store grain for weekly market days, as a trading area when the weather was bad, as a meeting room and even as a ‘polling area’ for the at one-time yearly held mayoral elections. On the top floor from the 18th century there was an archive room for the districts’ certificates and written documentation. There was also a conference room for the council, a chancery room for the town clerk and the mayor also had his own office. However it was only towards the end of the 19th century that the building lost its primary function as a grain store and trading area and since that time has been solely the seat of the district authority offices.
Marktgemeinde Reutte
occasion of the 500-year celebrations of the town’s market status provision a young tree was replanted on the site, in the middle of the road. The ‘Nagelsäule’ (column of nails) is standing on the south-west corner of the Marktgemeindeamt since 1917 and documents the locals’ preparedness to help out during the need created by World War One. With the donation of a sum of money for war widows and orphans, a nail could be beaten into the wooden column.
‘District authority’ and ‘District court’ building In the 15th and 16th centuries a hearing day was often held outdoors in front of the building. From his seat of judgement seat (‘Dingstuhl’) the judge of Ehrenberg set the law. Weekly and yearly markets were also held around the grain house. The image of the market square was dominated by a large linden tree, which was said to date from the time of the town’s elevation to market town status in 1489. Not least on account of its size and age, the tree had to be felled in 1947. On the 36
Adjoining this is the ‘District authority’ office – Obermarkt 7. In the 2nd half of the 18th century Joseph Carl Falger (1704 – 1777) constructed the guesthouse ‘Zur Gemse’ for genteel travellers. When journeying through in 1782, Pope Pius VI issued a blessing to the people from the balcony of the building. A memorial on the facade of today’s ‘District authority’ office is a reminder of this event. 37
A historic walk through Reutte
The District Court is opposite – Obermarkt 2. Even around 1600 today’s plain building which has a steep pitched roof, was mentioned in documents as being the ‘Ehrenheim’ residence for the moneyed nobles of Klainhanns. At that time it was one of the few stone buildings in Reutte and with its height it and the neighbouring St. Anna church, dominated the town. The building was purchased soon after 1600 by the later custodian of Ehrenberg, Burkart Layman for Liebenau. In 1606 he transferred the trusteeship of Ehrenberg Castle to ‘Ehrenheim’, a little while later the offices of the judge of the Castle were here. Between 1854 – 1938 the district authority and the courts where in the same building. Since 1938 the district court and the police station have been accommodated in the rooms of the old ‘Ehrenheim’.
St. Anna church and former Franciscan monastery After this, the re-designed church square which has a fountain dating from the year 1874, proceeds to the Franciscan monastery which includes St. Anna parish church. On 15th March 1628 Tyrol local ruler, Archduke Leopold V and his wife Claudia of Medici laid the foundation stone in Reutte for the Franciscan monastery. The already existing chapel/church dedicated to Holy Mother Anna was connected to the monastery, which the Franciscans had already moved into in 1631. St. Anna parish and monastery church: The design of the building of today’s church dates from the time after the fire in 1703. During the catastrophic fire of 1846, the church’s Baroque fittings were destroyed. During the last major refurbishment work carried out on the church between 1964 and 1967, the neo-classical fittings dating from the 19th century were removed. Today the prosaic church interior is embellished by few, but all the more precious works of art – spared from both fires, the late Gothic sculptural group of the ‘Virgin and Child with St. Anne’, created by the eminent Allgäu sculptor Jörg Lederer around 1510 / 15, remain. The sumptuous carving work is set in an elevated position on the front wall of the presbytery, surrounded by a recently made aureole. Above the right side altar 38
A historic walk through Reutte
hangs a painting depicting ‘St. Anthony of Padua as intercessor for prisoners and the infirm’. It was created by Paul Zeiller from Reutte and is dated 1707. It is also particularly worth mentioning that the ‘Crucifixion group with Maria and Johannes’ on the left side altar dated 1725, is attributed to the eminent Baroque sculptor Anton Sturm (1690 – 1757). (Further details can be found in the church in the church guide.) Along the monastery walls, three old chestnut trees remain a reminder of Reutte’s town improvement committee’s work at the turn of the century.
Lumper Haus On the other side of the street, ‘Lumper Haus’ – Obermarkt 25 is really worth a look. Built around 1500, the small picture of a crossbowman on the north façade is a reminder of the royal huntsmen. The building fell victim to a large catastrophic fire in 1703 and was rebuilt in 1710. The medallion with the depiction of a suitor above the entrance to the building alludes to the wedding of Christian Carl Lumper, son of a lawyer from upper Lechtal, and Maria Anna Jäger, daughter of a Reutte businessman and councillor, in 1782. The fathers of the bridal pair purchased the building for their children to mark the occasion. Since that time the property has remained in the unbroken tenure of the Lumper family.
Continuing through the Obermarkt As you stroll through the Obermarkt, you come to the oldest historic fountain dating from 1820, which is in front of the Sparkasse building, and then you come to the guesthouse ‘Zum Schwarzen Adler’ – Obermarkt 75. On the square right in front of the guesthouse ‘Zum Schwarzen Adler’ there was a ‘dance house’ up until 1494. It was used to hold dances, as a meeting area for discussions on community matters and as a court. Until 1766 at the site of the ‘bürgerliche Guetstadel’ (also called the ‘Pallhaus’), there was a storage area which was used for goods transported through Reutte. The guesthouse ‘Zum Schwarzen Adler’ dates from the 18th century and is especially impressive thanks to its 39

façade painting work which was carried out around 1800 by Josef Anton Köpfle (1757 – 1843), a pupil of Johann Jakob Zeiller. Under the gable a depiction of Christ’s resurrection can be seen. Classical trompe l’oeil architecture – such as columns and pilasters, Empire vases, leaf and fabric festoons – surround the portal and the windows. The artistically arranged basket bars above the entrance to the building are also worth noting.
Kög – the oldest part of Reutte Head out on a little trip from the guesthouse ‘Zum Schwarzen Adler’, bear right and go to the oldest part of Reutte, ‘Kög’. After a short walk you will come to Florianskapelle chapel. Documents attest that Florians kapelle chapel in its current form was built around 1760. The fresco of St. Florian on the façade gable and the ceiling painting inside the church date from 1951 and were created by Innsbruck painter Franz Seelos. Reutte painter Franz Anton Zeiller created the altar image ‘St. Florian protecting the market town of Reutte’ around 1774. Also part of the features in the recently restored chapel is a statue of a ‘Mater dolorosa’ and the figure of the so-called ‘Wiesheiland’ (Christ on the flagellation column). Upon your return to Obermarkt you will come to the ‘Krone’ – Obermarkt 46. This large mid hall house dating from the 17th century is now the guesthouse, ‘Zur goldenen Krone’, which previously was part of its own brewery. Between 28th and 29th July 1777 Emperor Joseph II stayed the night here, when the Krone landlord was Paul Deutsch. passed away in the village of Breitenwang in an ‘impoverished farmer’s lodge’, has recently been convincingly refuted. Since it can be proven that in Breitenwang since 1094 there was a Guelfic farm, is presumed that the Emperor died in his son-in-law’s farm, owned by the Guelfic family of Heinrich der Stolze. (A memorial plaque on the house in Dorfstraße 3 shows the presumed location.)
Dean parish church of Breitenwang
Kaiser-Lothar-Straße takes us to Breitenwang
At the end of Kaiser-Lothar-Straße, to your left, is the dean parish church of Breitenwang. Recent investigations have shown that there was a road station here on the Roman road, Via Claudia August, built in 46AD. It is assumed that a Christian church also must have been here since the Late Roman period.
At the end of Obermarkt, bear left into Kaiser-Lothar- Straße and after a few minutes you will come to the town of Breitenwang, where Emperor Lothar III dies on 4th December 1137 on his way back from his military campaign in Italy, in the presence of Heinrich der Stolze. The belief that the emperor by happenstance

The following artistic pieces on the rich Baroque style design inside the church are worth looking at: the ceiling fresco in the presbytery which depicts the

‘handing over of keys to St. Peter’ dating from 1755 by Johann Jakob Zeiller. His brother-in-law, painter from Reutte, Balthasar Riepp (1703 – 1763), created the small painting above the main altarpiece which depicts the ‘conversion of St. Paul’. The main altarpiece with the ‘St. Peter’s abnegation of Christ’was painted by Johann Christoph Haas around 1789 / 90. The two side altar images date from 1809, depicting the ‘Martyrdom of St. Sebastian’ and the ‘Holy Family’, were painted by Lechtal painter Karl Selb (1760 – 1819), a pupil of Johann Jakob Zeiller. Wolfram Köberl from Innsbruck painted the nave frescoes, modelled on Baroque style, in 1975. Shown are both patron saints of the church Peter and Paul, and how they guide people on their way to God. (Also see the description provided in the church) ‘Ascension church’, earlier ‘Totenkapelle’ chapel of the dead: The church steeple on the so-called ‘Chapel of Ascension’ dates from around 1680 and was enlarged in 1724. The hourglass, cross and candlesticks on the cable crest indicate the purpose of the church as being a chapel of rest and of ascension. Of significance are the stucco danse macabre depictions inside the chapel, which were created by stuccoer Thomas Seitz between 1724 and 1726. The decorative frescos, probably dating from around 1725, are by Paul Zeiller and Joseph Obermiller. Also part of the building are the sculpture finishes dating around 1730 by sculptor Anton Sturm, who worked especially for the St. Mang Benedictine Monastery in Füssen around 1725 / 30. Cemetery: On the south wall of the dean parish church in the area of the earlier cemetery, two gravestones for the Klainhanns family bearing their family coat of arms and dating from the 16th century can be seen. At the end of the eastern cemetery arcades are the graves of Christoph Zeiller and his wife Barbara, nee. Höß, who died in 1628. Jesus as the Friend of the Children is depicted in the middle of the memorial plaque, the kneeling founder parental couple and their numerous children can be seen in the slim base panel. The patron saint of the dead and two tablets with their birth and death dates flank both sides of the centre 42

piece. On the superimposed segmental arch is the family coat of arms of the Zeiller and Höß families. Also worth looking at in the cemetery is the grave cross – particularly worthy of emphasis is a double- sided Rococo wrought iron cross dated around 1760 (the Köpfle grave).
To Rochuskapelle chapel and back to Reutte From the dean parish church in Breitenwang, the route then proceeds along Planseestraße to the Rochuskapelle, which is dedicated to the two plague saints Rochus and Sebastian. On account of the 43

atrocinium it may be assumed that the chapel was p set up during the time of the plague (1611 and 1635). There is however no documentary evidence about the exact time of creation. Possibly the date visible above the entrance – 1526 – is associated with the building. Between 1953 – 1954 a small church was remodelled to create a war memorial chapel. The graffito with the depiction of the crucifixion on the exterior facade and the fresco on the chancel arch inside are by Professor Max Spielmann from Innsbruck. Benches next to Rochuskapelle invite you to pause for thought. Continue walking along Planseestraße and you will get back to Reutte town centre again with its cafés and shops.
