It’s all down to the genius of makeup artist and lead makeup designer Doniella Davy and her ability to translate the characters and the show’s narrative into a never-ending array of phenomenal makeup creations. Much to fans delight, Doniella has announced she will be launching her own makeup brand called Half Magic, which will aptly include a range of glittery, pigmented, and playful products.

Euphoria Beauty Is Here To Stay

Grab some gemstones and eyeliner.

Audacious colors and wearable gemstones— beauty looks once primarily seen at EDM festivals—are going mainstream, thanks to HBO’s hit series Euphoria. Lead makeup designer Donni Davy, who collaborates with actors like Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, and Barbie Ferreira to create the show’s viral 3D looks, says she hopes the style will enable “people to feel like they have permission to pair bold colors with rhinestones or glitter—and bring it into everyday wear like it’s not a big deal.”

Helping to advance the trend is a fresh crop of beauty lines, including Pley Beauty, which boasts reusable gems and floral appliqués, and Half Magic, Davy’s own new makeup line, set to launch next month. Euphoria is also influencing looks on the red carpet, the catwalk, and social media. Etro, Fendi, Valentino, and LaQuan Smith all sent models down spring ready-to-wear and couture runways with tactile beauty effects, such as a smattering of stones, fluttery eye fringe, and glittery lids. Makeup artist Nikki Wolff used gems to play up TikTok star Addison Rae’s eyes for Britain’s Fashion Awards. And singer-songwriter FKA twigs posted a photo of herself on Instagram “crying” diamanté tears.

The purchase of rhinestones increased 2,607 percent from December 2021 to February 2022, according to shopping service app Klarna.

You don’t have to go with full-on, jewel-encrusted lids to dabble in the trend. Start simple with a few coats of colored mascara, such as Eyeko Lash Alert Mascara, which comes in blue, green, and purple—or experiment with candy-colored eyeliner from Lady Gaga’s makeup line, Haus Laboratories. You can also get creative with temporary tattoos from Inked by Dani (seen on Bella Hadid), available in diamonds, stars, or dots.

Regardless of how daring you decide to be, Euphoria-inspired makeup is all about redefining what everyday beauty means. Being fearless can be fun: “Just go for it,” Davy says.

Euphoria makeup artist Doniella Davy

Announces her own makeup brand, we catch up with her on all things beauty

It’s official: Euphoria is the biggest makeup influence of the century so far, with fans worldwide devotedly recreating the iconic looks since the show first aired in the summer of 2019. Now that Season Two is well underway, Euphoria’s beauty influence has grown tenfold, with the creative makeup looks starting to infiltrate our every day lives as well as our social media feeds. We’re pushing the boundaries of traditional everyday application, adding a few gemstones to our inner corners, and switching up our eyeliner colour more freely and drawing freehand patterns on our skin in an act of self expression.

Here, she tells GLAMOUR how she finds endless inspiration, how she deals with the pressure of being a global trendsetter and what role makeup plays in her own life.

Euphoria’s makeup has become a phenomenon in its own right. How does that make you feel?

It is incredibly inspiring and emo tional for me to see the mindblowing creativity and skill that goes into all the Euphoria makeup recreations and TikTok trends. People are ridiculously talented — it’s absolutely insane!

As the makeup department head on Euphoria, I was in the unique and fortunate position of being responsible for getting these colourful, bold and sparkling looks on TV so they could enter into the mainstream and be seen by millions.

6

However, I don’t feel a sense of ownership over the massive “Euphoria makeup” trend as I was inspired by Gen Z to begin with! Having said that, I’m still in shock that something I had a creative hand in has taken off in such a way.

Did you feel pressure going into the new season to live up to the success of the last?

I had lots of panic and anxiety about making the Euphoria makeup fans proud this season. Ultimately, every choice I made had to be the right choice for the script, so it was important for me to stay humble and remember that I’m there to help tell the story. Even though the Euphoria makeup became what it did, I don’t come to set on

assignment just to serve cool looks on the cast — even though I may want to! The looks are the bi-product of the scripts themselves. Sometimes they are bold and expressive, and sometimes they need to be much more muted. I needed to constantly check myself!

Where do you find inspiration?

My first source of inspiration is the script — the characters’ back stories and personalities and their emotional stats in any given scene. I always take cues from their costumes, designed by Heidi Bivens, to gain more insight into which colours I’m using and how stylised the looks should be.

I’ve also been incredibly

inspired by people’s recreations or unique takes of Season One makeup. While quarantining in my home in LA for most of 2020 I took to my own face to work on makeup ideas, which inspired some of the Season Two looks. I’m also forever inspired by 1960s makeup with its pastel tones, winged liner, and bold lower lash lines.

What’s your creative process?

I commissioned an artist I found on Instagram to make black and white portraits of the main cast, which I used as face charts to sketch out looks and to document the looks after we had established them on actors.

“We all saw climate change this summer. We all saw fires around the world. And coming back with a show in September, thinking about whether our pants are going to be highwaisted or low-waisted—it seems a bit futile to me.”

So said Olivier Rousteing before a show that that was in equal parts inspiring, infuriating and surprising.

The biggest surprise was Cher, who popped up at the finale of this 100+ look show with Rousteing on the runway. She’d been hired to pitch a new handbag, and we’d seen her on a pre-show video, but had no sense she was in the stadium. Her ensemble was very If I Could Turn Back

Time, and indeed, at 76, she looked convincingly like time was at her total command: quite amazing.

The inspiring part was rooted in Rousteing. Dressed like a samurai messiah, he told us backstage that while he

could not claim this collection was 100 per cent sustainable, he’d used fabrics made of paper, of banana, and of wicker (in the couture) to be as much so as possible. He added: “I have friends who tell me they don’t want to have kids, because what will our world be tomorrow? And at the end of the day it’s not about taste. It’s not about aesthetics.” When faced with the hardest proposition— that all fashion is essentially unsustainable for its inherent ephemerality—he convincingly riposted that his ongoing project is to radicalize his supply chain for the better. So props to him.

festival vibes for African-inspired spring/summer 2023 collection, with Cher and Ckay performances and Kylie Jenner and Stromae in the crowd.

The show began with Cher on a screen, saying: “All of us invent ourselves. Some of us just have more imagination than others.”

Dubbed the “Balmain Festival”, Rousteing unveiled his designs with clear African influences and mythological references including Apollo and Venus.

A particularly poignant moment during the finale came when black models walked down in a variety of textured dresses, some with the corseted look Rousteing favours and a song by Youssou N’Dour featuring the lyrics: “And when a child is born into this world, it has no concept, of the tone the skin is living in.”

After the show ended, the rising Nigerian star of Afrobeats, Ckay, performed on stage for thousands attending the event.

The glamour oozed at the Balmain event, with celebrities attending including US singer and actor Dove Cameron, Belgian artist Stromae and American reality TV star and close friend of Rousteing, Kylie Jenner. There were stars on the catwalk too, with famous American plus size model Ashley Graham modelling one of Rousteing’s creations.

BALENCIAGA

Paris sneaker an intentionally

distressed high-top

The Paris sneaker, an intentionally distressed high-top, became the internet’s most hated thing just hours after its debut. Complete with holes, yellowing seams, skid marks, and chunks taken out of the sole, the model struck many as a social experiment engineered to answer the age-old question: will customers buy anything, as long as there’s a designer label slapped on it?

14

Luxury fashion brand Balenciaga, which is known for its over-the-top products, has launched its limited collection of overly distressed sneakers called ‘Paris Sneaker’.

Available in red, black, and white colours, the newly-launched product has been released in high top and mule varieties and costs $625 and $495 respectively. It is to be noted that the sneakers are available for pre-order and have been made with fullydestroyed cotton and rubber and feature ripping on its entire fabric. The brand’s logo has been printed at the edge of the toe and its graffiti logo in colour contrast is there on the sole.

The company has said in the press release that the shabbylooking aesthetic of the sneakers aims to suggest that they are

meant to be worn for a lifetime.

Social media users were quick to react to the worn-out look of the footwear. A user wrote that if someone bought the $1,850 Balenciaga sneaker that looked like it was run over by a lawnmower, the person should seek help. He also asked the one buying it to reach out to him as he wanted to understand what made him buy the sneakers.

Another trolled the brand by posting a photo of the sneakers and wrote, “These are the brandnew Balenciaga Paris sneakers that are being sold for $1850.” He added, “Mad people have been ahead of trend for years.”

Dosanjh is a huge fan of different types of sneakers and is known for his footwear collection. The sneakers will be available on

the brand’s website. So far, these shoes have been available in European markets. The US and Middle East stores will get the collection on 16 May while Japan is expected to have it on 23 May.

How Bella Hadid’s Spray-on Dress Was Made

The story behind the spray-on dress started with a can of silly string and a man named Dr. Manel Torres. “I thought I could create a mist,” he said in a 2013 TED Talk. “That was the eureka moment.” Torres, who studied fashion design, had the idea to spray on a T-shirt (think of a spider web, he said) but he didn’t have the knowledge to create such a product. He went to Imperial College in London, known for their innovations, with his thoughts. They liked his idea, and gave him resources: a lab and materials to play. After two years, and lots of trial and error, he started to get results.

In 2003, Torres created Fabrican — a liquid fiber, bound together with polymers, bio polymers and greener solvents, that evaporates when the spray reaches a surface, in this case, Hadid’s body. According to Torres, the fabric feels like suede and can be manipulated like any other. Hence the woman who cut a slit into Hadid’s dress. But that texture can change depending on what fibers are used (can be natural or synthetic fibers) and how it is applied.

Enter the Coperni designers — Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillan, known for their innovative designs like a glass bag — who created a design of their own. That design was realized using the Fabrican and 3-D technology, and built, in front of a fashion crowd and Kylie Jenner, on Hadid’s body. It moved like a second skin, fitting her body seamlessly. In fashion, this technology can be used to make a whole dress, à la Hadid, or even to repair old pieces of damaged clothing. Their plan is to take this technology to the medical industry, being able to make casts or spray-on sterile bandages from aerosol cans.

“Fashion designers need new materials and fabrics to create products to address evolving lifestyles and consumer demands,” wrote the show notes. “In the 21st century we should make it the first time that science and design really march together in close step, illustrating in this way their interdependence.”

Bella Hadid posted a photo of the dress and wrote: “Only together we can make this magic. I am still speechless. She later posted another one that said: “No rehearsal, no nothing, just passion.” No rehearsal?

Mei Pang

Mei Pang has been in the con tent creation space for a few years, starting off on YouTube where she went viral in 2018 with her cut crea se makeup tutorial. From her YouTube channel, which has over 219,000 subscribers, she develo ped a loyal following that has now expanded to Instagram, where she has over 800,000 followers, and Tiktok, where she has over 1.6 million followers. Her photos also frequent Pinterest, where they gain many users’ attention with her unconventional looks.

She was the bald, tatted beauty that stood out not only from her looks, but also her height. Mei had forgone hee ls due to an injury, which made her 5’4” stature stand out even more amongst her colleagues who wore stilettos.

Upon first glance, Mei’s looks are show-stopping. When asked what the inspiration behind her bold beauty looks, shaved head, and symmetrical tattoos is, she had a multi-part answer that dug into all the details: Starting with her hair, the short answer is that she “just wanted to stop paying for shampoo, honestly.” The longer, more in-depth answer tou ches upon her identity and the attachment she

had to her hair: “I used to have hair all the way down to my hips, and I held so much identity in my hair, like my beauty was based on how good my hair looked that day. I realized that I put so much time, money, and effort into my hair, and that’s how I felt pretty as a kid. So I decided to cut it off. And I shaved it all off one ni ght. It’s been five years now, which is insane to say.”

With her tattoos, her story is one that will resonate with tattoo-havers. Mei always knew she wanted tattoos, and once she got her first ONE she couldn’t stop herself from getting more. Her first tattoo was on her stomach and was inspired by celebrity icon Rihanna. When asked why she decided to keep all her tattoos symmetrical, she mentioned her second tattoos and what followed after:

“I got my second tattoo on my arm, but when I walked out of the shop I just felt unbalanced. Like, something was hidden. So I got a tattoo on the other side, and 80 tattoos later we’re here and fully symmetrical.”

As for her beauty looks, she takes inspiration from her environment and surroundings. Mei mentioned various sources of inspiration such as her friends, other creators in the beauty space, and “wackier points in the world,” which led her to once do a makeup look based on a couch she saw being thrown out on the side of the street.

On Not Conforming to Beauty Standards and the Journey to Finding Peace

Mei’s philosophy, according to her management website, is that “she does not aspire to fit any predetermined labels, and really focuses on what makes her happy.” When asked about this philosophy, she opened up about her own journey to finding happiness and peace within herself:

“I would say my journey to finding peace and happiness has definitely been a lot of trial and error. I am a selfdescribed internet kid, and I grew up on MySpace and Tumblr. Being exposed to different sub-facets of that side of the internet led me to see so many different aesthetics that I wanted to try out. And I did everything. So through that experience I realized that I can just pick out the parts that made me the happiest, and that’s how I came to look like this. I always described myself as a simple girl that just has a couple stickers on her and that’s it. But I strive for comfort. That’s my main thing. Like if I don’t feel comfortable or cozy, then I’m not my best self. So yes, there was definitely trial and error to find this peace.”

Having an Artistic Platform and Representing Asians in the Fashion and Beauty Space

When asked how it feels to represent Asians in the fashion and beauty space, Mei did not hold back with her answer, touching upon the lack of representation and the changing industry:

“It’s an absolute honor, to be completely honest with you. And obviously, I hope to see more people that are like me or just Asian people in this space. Because growing up I remember people would say, ‘Oh, you look like Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan,’ and I’m like, I wish I looked like Lucy Liu, are you kidding me!? But obviously, I don’t look anything like her. That speaks to how little representation

there was in the space, that you can only think of just one or two people on your hand, just Lucy Liu, Jackie Chan, and Bruce Lee, and that’s it. So it’s been an absolute pleasure to put myself out there and to show people that, you know, you can look like this whilst, like, living in suburban Canada. And you can have a cat and have a shaved head; you can just live your life and be happy, and be at home. And I hope people, like, take inspiration from it. Maybe like, if you want to shave your head, you can definitely shave your head, but just to show people that there are so many different versions of Asian out there. So it’s definitely been really lovely. It’s been a blessing.”

¿What about savage fent?

“It was nerve wracking of

course, because I’ve never done runway or been in such a high-production, high-stakes situation. And in the back of my mind, I was like, do they know that? I’m 5’4”? Do they know I have busted knees, and I can’t wear high heels? It was just like these things that back

I remember people would say, ‘Oh, you look like Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan,’ and I’m like, I wish I looked like Lucy Liu, are you kidding me!? But obviously, I don’t look anything like her.

my mind. But at the same time, my management team told me that’s why they want you, because you’re unique. You’re different. And I took those words and just went into it with the confidence as any 6-foot model would

have. And it doesn’t feel real. Honestly when I say, ‘Oh, I walked the show,’ it still feels like a fever dream: the whole team, the production, and just Rihanna. And the models that were in my little section of the show, they were so kind and warm, and it just didn’t feel like a competition. We were all there and just so excited.”

How to Live Your Authentic Self

“I have said this on my platform so many times, but it sticks with me. It’s something that my dad has said to me growing up: ‘Try everything once. If it sticks, it sticks. If it doesn’t, at least you tried,’ and it really rings true. Especially with how I look, you don’t get to look like this without trying a couple of things. Just yeah, trying everything once again, trial and error, and finding that comfort and happiness. Like, well, you might get tattoos that your parents hated. Or like every single tattoo that I’ve gotten, right? I have hid the fact that I shaved my head and I had tattoos from my dad until I was 21, and I started getting tattoos when I was18, because I knew that he would hate them. But when my parents saw that I was so happy, and I was living my fullest truth and that I can still be financially stable — because of course, with Asian parents, that’s the number-one thing. When they see that I’m happier and see that I’m comfortable, they cannot say anything bad. So they’re happy for me. I have a good support system around me, and I have found such a chosen happy family. “
