MEDIA POLICIES

MEDIA OPPORTUNITY Head coach Mike Smith is available upon request. Other coaches and individual athletes may be requested as well. Special requests for availability may be made to the athletics communications office.

PHOTOGRAPHERS If photographers and/or videographers wish to shoot the athletes, prior notification of at least one day before the event must be given. Contact Adrianna Candelaria in the athletics communication office to do so.

INTERVIEW POLICY All athlete interviews must be coordinated through the Athletics Communications office at least one day in advance. No interviews or photo shoots will be conducted on days prior to races. Out-of-town media should contact the athletics communications office to make arrangements for phone interviews.

POST-RACE Each NAU athlete will be made available for interviews upon request after his/her race is completed. Please note, the athletes frequently perform a “cool down” run shortly after a scheduled race. In order to avoid waiting for an interview after the cool down, reach out to Adrianna Candelaria as soon as possible with specific athlete requests following the competition.

SMITH INTERVIEWS Mike Smith and his staff are generally available for interviews during standard workweek hours. Contact Adrianna Candelaria in the athletics communications office at ayc43@nau.edu to coordinate all interviews with coach Mike Smith.

MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME Arizona does not move its clock ahead in the spring or back in the fall. As a result, Flagstaff time coincides with the Pacific time zone through Nov. 6. The rest of the season, NAU is compatible with the Mountain time zone.

PRACTICE Daily cross country workouts are open to both the public and the media unless otherwise noted. Media planning to attend cross country workouts should notify the athletics communications office in advance to confirm start times and to arrange interviews.

LUMBERJACKS ONLINE Releases, statistics, rosters and breaking news are available at the athletics web site, located at www.nauathletics.com. NAU CROSS COUNTRY

2020

SEASON-IN-REVIEW

Entering the 2020 campaign, the Northern Arizona University men’s cross country team was on the hunt to regain their national championhip title, and earn their fifth consecutive Big Sky championship, while the women’s team was attempting to defend its 2019 conference title. However, in an unprecidented year, the fall cross country season was cancelled as a result of the gloabal pandemic. In a positive turn of events, a proposal from the conference head coaches was approved by Big Sky athletic directors and university presidents, allowing each team in the conference to compete in up to two meets during the fall season. Under these terms, and a blanket of strict safety protocols, the NAU men elected to travel to Oklahoma in October to preview the national championship course, going on to win the OSU Invitational meet as a team, with All-American senior Luis Grijlava placing first overall as well. The remainder of the regular season involved two February meets in Las Vegas, Nev.: The Silver State Collegiate Challenge, in which the men finished second and the women finsihed third, and the Battle Born Collegiate Challenge, in which the men won, led by individual champion, All-American sophomore Abdihamid Nur, while the women’s team placed third. The end of February marked the begining of championship season, with the exception of regional meets. The Lumberjack women successfully defended their conference title, and junior Taryn O’Neill became the Big Sky women’s individual champion, becoming the the first woman since 2018 to record a time under 17 minutes, and the first Lumberjack that has run a sub-17 at conference since 2010 as well. Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Nur was crowned the individual champion, but the Lumberjack men fell short, earning second place overall. NCAA Championships, held in March, saw the NAU men reclaim the throne, winning their fourth national title in five years, with a score of only 60 points, the lowest team champion score since 2005; the men also placed four runners within the top-10, which has not been accomplished by a national championship team since 2003. As for the NAU women, they placed 11th overall after starting the season ranked No. 26 in the USTFCCCA Poll.

#NAUSTRONG GEORGE KYTE CLASSIC HISTORY

The George Kyte Classic is named for the late Dr. George Kyte, Professor Emeritus of history at Northern Arizona; Dr. Kyte was a longtime supporter of Lumberjack Athletics, especially track & field and cross country. The event was ran with Dr. Kyte in attendance until 2004. This season would have marked Northern Arizona’s 41st annual hosting of the George Kyte Classic at Flagstaff’s Buffalo Park, but unfortunately, due to the global pandemic it was cancelled.
