A&D Addition (Fall 2022)
This project was a group project with Architecture students: Kimberlyn Beltz and Adrianna Penaloza The program is an addition to the Architecture and Design center on Thomas Jefferson University’s campus. The focus of this project was sustainability and technical systems. The design allows an expansion of Architecural eduactaion facilities, while maintaining existing circulation paths on the campus. Reactivating a courtyard space that previously was only used for circulation.
Matrix Framework Dance School (Spring 2022) The design for the dance school is based on the structural grid system from the existing structure, which serves as the facade for the ground level. The grid dictated form, and is exposed in exterior spaces. the grid strays from the original, by being tigter in more intimate private spaces, and more open in public ones. The grid then dictates the floor plan. The design also had sustainable practices in mind by utalizing the entire orignal structure and by implementing green spaces on the roof.
Step-Up Library Complex (Fall 2021)
The Program of this project was selected as a studio after extensive research and analysis on the neigborhood of West Kensington, and we found that there is a lack of library spaces in the neighborhood, adequate food options, and a large demographic of uneducated in the region. With that and there being a GED school adjacent to the property, the program became a library focused on GED education with a food court and a childcare facility for GED students. the design focused on fitting in with the neighborhood materiality and stepping the builing to bridge the height from one neighboring lot to the other. The design also pushed quiet and private spaces to the rear and the public ones to the front.
Sargassam Sea Research Station (Spring 2022) This project was a group project with Architecure student Mary Perkins, and Interior Design Students Aine Lavery and Alicia Fierro. The Project is located in the middle of the Sargassam Sea in the southern Atlantic Ocean. The program is a research facility, which we decided as a group would be focused specifically on Microplastics. This was due to finding thru research the importance of the Sargassam Seaweed to this ecosystem and how it is being threatened by microplastics. The Design focused on making a floating Facility that brings elements of life on land to researchers. We created the Complex exterior form from inspriation of seaweed interlocking itself. The Progarmatical layout created a seperation of life and work, with research being on the submerged floors, while living spaces being above the surface.
Cabin Competition (Fall 2020)
Studio Retreat - located in Chappaqua NY and designed by: Andrew Kotchen, Mathew Burman, Stephan Thimme, and J. Tyler Marshall Jefferson 2020 Fall C_ABE Cabin Competition - Nicholas Vincent This was created to replace a decaying structure from the 1960s. the cabin is 300 square feet and the overall intention was to create a space that allowed the client to co-exist with nature. the small space has windows that wrap the western facade, and frame the the scenery. The exterior of the modern retreat is clad with Dark Ipe siding, a durable South American hardwood, while the interior features Walnut. The wood types were chosen so as to create a link between the surrounding trees and the new addition. The windows have hefty vertical and horizontal mullions, which are an abstract representation of tree branches. The concept of this project is simple geometric design combined with precise details to support its natural charm. Located on the rear of the owners property, the studio is enveloped by forestry, and provides a “disconnect” from busy day-to-day life in the city. for my representation of this iconic cabin, I choose to place it in Nockamixon state park. This was choosen because I wanted a site that instead of offering montainous landscapes like the existing, I wanted to give it a lakeside landscape with a slight hilly topography. the interaction with the lake I felt is imortant for a cabin like this because in the existing it interaction with nature is very constant and consistant, while with the location I represented its more about the interaction of human interaction with the surroundings, as well as the interaction of the landscape itself
D9 West philly peace park Analysis & Design ( Fall 2023)
This studio was focused on Afrofuturism, with the site being the West Philly Peace Park. Above is the analysis of the site itself with my Triangulation analysis, which was used to layout the site. The Triangulation was focused on access, circulation, and existing structures. Featured left is my Map of Controversey on the West Philadelphia Neighborhood. The Map had a similar theme with the focus on access (Public transit & car), and existing Park structures and gardens. These 2 Analases were used to dictate the programs of the design, aswell as layout. The design of all the structures was rooted in wind analysis of an Afrofuturist case study (Lycee Schorage), which was used to create the forms of all building and structures
Dox Thrash Community Center (Fall 2020)
This Project revolved around the revitalization of the Dox Thrash house in the Sharswood neighborhood of Philadelphia. The design utalized the existing facade of the Thrash house, and created a promanade behind it that had catwalks run above the ground level connecting the facade to the community center. The Center located adjacent to the Cecil B. Moore Library utalizes the existing courtyard in front of the library to form the promanade. The front facade of the community center then matches the recessed facade of the library. The catwalks above the promanade are then used for circulation aswell as for guests to get close to the Facade of the Dox Thrash house and view it form varying heights and angles. The facade of the Dox Thrash house is treated as a piece of art, rather than serve as the direct entry to the community center located behind it.
Invisible Cities Model ( Fall 2019)
This Project is a physical model of the invisible cities story on the fictional city of Sophronina. The Site is model was created from interpreting the painting “The Dessert” by Paul Cézanne into a bas Relief and then into a physical wooden interpretation of the bas relief. The model follows the story’s depiction of a city where permanent looking structures are dismanteled and non permenant looking structures are permenant. The heavy concrete materials are elevated and supported by the wooden components, which are the permenant part of the structure.
D6 techtonic and abstract model (Spring 2022) This project is a physical repreentation of the project 63rd house by studio gang, which is a proposed repurpose of a chicago post office. This was a case study for the Matrix Framework Dance Studio project. For this project I created a Tectonic model of the existing post office building. This Techtonic model and the grid of the building was used to create an abstration of it and how it infuenced thew plan of the proposed project by Studio Gang. The spaces are represented by the flexibility of the material used. more priaved and seculded spaces are represented by contrete and the more open spaces are boxes of wood, while the open public spaces are left with the grid being present throughout.
Pedal Performance Pavilion D4 ( Spring 2021)
This project is a performance pavilion located in Fairmount Park in Strawberry Mansion Philadelphia. The design utalizes the ground and scupts it to become seating. the pavilion is cantelevered from a central point, being the stage area. The Pavilion is inspired by the pedals of a flower and has 3 differing portions that overlap eachother to cover the entire ampitheatre space. The roof pedals are curved and suspended by tension cables running from above the stage area and curve upwards for sound amplification from the stage.
Walker Guest House Model (Spring 2020) This project is a case study on the Walker Guest House located in Sanibel Island Florida and designed by Paul Rudolph. This Model is to understand the interworkings and intricacies of the Grid system and mechanical components of the house’s moving shutters. This project was done in partnership with Architecture student Luis Burgos. The house ultalizes a basic 3 x 3 bay grid syetem, with 8 of the 12 exterior facade bays being operable to open the building up for more light or to be closed for more privacy. Each operable bay is able to move with a counter weight system with balls that hold the shutter in place.
Walker Guest House Mondo-Materalis (Spring 2020)
This project is based on the model of the Walker Guest house and the model i created with Luis Burgos. This solo Project is my interpretation of the shutters of the house, being customizable to being open or closed based on the users preference. the model has 6 Sliding pieces that each have 3 different customizations to them, with the middle one being blank on each of them. The shadows created are supposed to emmulate this choice of the user. The slides have differing colors and textures/patterns to alter the views that each side of the house has to offer users of the spaces in the house.
