GRAND CHALLENGE UDUPI IS A SOCIAL INNOVATION COMPETITION ORGANIZED BY THE UDUPI DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION IN COLLABORATION WITH THE INNOVATION CENTRE AT MANIPAL
PURPOSE This challenge is intended to stimulate young minds to use their creativity, enthusiasm and skills in presenting innovative solutions to real-world problems. The Government machinery is well established, but in its capacity as an agent, encounters many operational, administrative, scientific and human resource challenges. The Grand Challenge is aimed at being a platform to collect vibrant, out-of-the-box ideas from our young citizens in solving some of the existing issues in the district. Based on internal discussions, the Udupi Deputy Commissioner’s Office has identified the following areas for the hackathon challenge. The problem statements defined here form the basis for the Grand Challenge. Each of the given themes has a micro, macro and policy component.
Eligibility CriteriA Degree students and faculty (from any stream - Arts, Science, Engineering, Medicine) in colleges in the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
Team Size Minimum of three members per team and up to five members including students and faculty is recommended.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT Create an innovative and comprehensive media campaign (across various media channels, publicity hoardings, street messages, social media etc) for the Swachh Udupi Mission. The mega campaign should aim at changing people’s attitudes towards cleanliness in public spaces and at their homes, waste segregation etc and enthuse them to be willing partners in carrying forward and implementing the Swachh Udupi Mission Personnel Management in the Swachh Udupi Mission – with respect to motivation, recruitment and training Creative suggestions to reduce wastage in the first place, reuse and/or recycle waste/resource Other suggestions to convert the Mission into a movement across the district
DRINKING WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT How do we promote judicious use of water amongst citizenry? What are the best modes of potable water supply for scattered rural habitations situated on islands in Udupi district? Scarcity of drinking water during summer months, results in huge costs on tanker supply. Are there any alternative methods to solve this problem? Methods to ensure maximum utilization of fresh water of rivers before they attain salinity while joining the sea; better water conservation practices at the micro level How do we encourage/improve rainwater harvesting in this region?
PRE SCHOOL & PRIMARY EDUCATION Suggestions to make the Anganvadis - effective educational centers – focusing on fun and social skill development Capacity building, training and motivation of teachers in pre-schools and primary schools – Innovative learning practices that can be followed Suggest methods to reduce school dropouts – retain children in school and help them improve their learning potential; find methods to impart both knowledge and skills; methods to identify and nurture other talents with early stage intervention Making schools safe for children
WOMEN'S HEALTH MANAGEMENT Raising menstrual health awareness amongst adolescent girls Encouraging local development and use of eco-friendly, cost-effective pads; develop local, eco-friendly disposal mechanisms
MIGRANT LABOURER CONCERNS • Survey, identification and registration of migrant labourers • Registration drive so migrants can avail programs (health insurance, subsidies) • Seasonal workers need night shelters; permanent migrants need housing • Toilet facilities for migrant workers • Schooling & nutritional health of migrant children
