Bears Holley by the Sea receives $65,000 bear grant Staff reports news@navarrepress.com The Holley by the Sea Homeowners Association has secured $65,000 in grant money to combat black bears in the neighborhood. This“BearWise”grant program was funded by the Florida Legislature and Florida Fish and the Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The program will award $515,000 in grants across the state. The grant funding will allow 3,700 residents to modify their trash cans to keep black bears out of the garbage. Bears often find food in garbage cans, which can encourage them to stay in neighborhoods. The “BearWise” grants can require that a county already have ordinances that require securing of garbage against bears to be eligible. Santa Rosa County has such an ordinance. Santa Rosa was also approved for a similar grant last year, but refused it. That $150,000 of “BearWise” funding would have allowed residents of the county to purchase bear-proof garbage cans at reduced cost. The Board of County Commissioners opted not to accept this funding due to concerns over who would be responsible for replacing cans as well as limitation on which residents would be eligible. The County Commission recently sent a letter to FWC that alluded to encouraging any means to control bear populations. Santa Rosa County leads the state in the number of reported bear and human interactions, according to FWC.

Stroads: “The futons of transportation investments” By Jamie Gentry jamie@navarrepress.com In September, the Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners approved roughly $80,000-$150,000 to pay consulting firm Matrix Design Group to create a District 4 Master Plan for the Navarre, Holley and Navarre Beach area. As development of that plan gets underway the Navarre Press is taking a look at planning the future of Navarre. Among thousands of articles, tutorials and forums on how to make a community stronger and more profitable for all, the nonprofit website Strong Towns has a piece that seems to point a finger directly at Navarre.
