WHAT’S ON... January

February

PRETTY WOMAN THE MUSICAL

STRICTLY COME DANCING LIVE

ABC – THE LEXICON OF LOVE

January 23 - February 3 • Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

January 30 - 31 • M&S Bank Arena

February 15 • Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

It’d be impossible to fully recreate the magic of the Julia Roberts and Richard Gere film version, but this stage adaptation brings a new dimension to the Pretty Woman story. With Ore Oduba as hotel manager Barney Thompson, Elly Jay as Vivian, Oliver Savile as Edward and one of the original SIX queens Natalie Paris as Kit, the show has a great rock music score thanks to co-writer Bryan Adams.

The latest Strictly series was a fantastic one, with no clear frontrunner for the glitterball, and the competition’s going to be hot again as some of the stars return to show off their dancefloor moves, and all those footwork skills they picked up over the series, in a live show. Already confirmed for the tour are Angela Rippon, Layton Williams and Ellie Leach, along with judges Shirley, Anton and Craig.

ABC’s timeless album The Lexicon Of Love went straight to number one when it was released in 1982, producing four massive 80s hits - Poison Arrow, The Look Of Love, Tears Are Not Enough, and All Of My Heart. The Lexicon Of Love Orchestra tour began with a one-off at the Royal Albert Hall in 2009 and now Martin Fry and his gold lame jacket are on the road again celebrating 15 years.

WET WET WET AND GO WEST

VARNA INTERNATIONAL BALLET

JUSTIN MOORHOUSE

January 29 • Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

January 9 - 11 • Liverpool Empire Theatre

February 16 • Royal Court

One night, two pop legends – Scottish rock band Wet Wet Wet and Brit Award-winning duo Go West, aka Peter Cox and Richard Drummie, have teamed up for the first time for a co-headline UK tour which comes to Liverpool’s beautiful Philharmonic Hall. They’ve racked up 36 top 40 hits between them over the past four decades so the hardest part will be deciding which huge song to leave out.

Founded in 1947, the critically acclaimed Varna International Ballet is coming to Liverpool Empire Theatre with three different classical performances, following its spectacular debut tour. Showing Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, each performance offers stunning choreography and a breathtaking show.

Stand-up comedian and Phoenix Nights alumni Justin Moorhouse is back in the city for a one-night gig as part of his extended UK tour, Stretch and Think. Embracing middle age and parenthood, he’s written a new show which covers a whole world of topics from Madonna and Labradoodles, to whether tapas is a rip-off and why he loves football but hates football fans.

From concerts to comedy tours, Liverpool is home to a bursting selection of events over the next three months.

March LIVERPOOL BEER FESTIVAL

CAST

AN EVENING OF RADIOHEAD

February 15 - 17 • Metropolitan Cathedral

March 16 • Liverpool Guild of Students, Mountford Hall

March 30 • Liverpool Cathedral

The only CAMRA Real Ale and Cider Festival in Liverpool returns to the Lutyens Crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral over three days in February, with more than 200 real ales and ciders. In addition to much sampling of different varieties, there’ll be entertainment at the Saturday evening session from Paul O'Keefe Duo, a local guitar and drum pair who’ll be playing a cover set.

Cast is right up there among Liverpool’s favourite musical sons and frontman John Power remains as full of Scouse stage presence as ever after more than 25 years. After their anniversary tour last year, the band is back with their first new album in six years to sit alongside the classics and a fresh set of live dates including this home gig which is likely to be a special one.

In the stunning setting of Liverpool Cathedral, fans can lose themselves in a celebration of Radiohead's vast universe of music including hits and hidden gems from their 30 years and albums such as OK Computer, In Rainbows and The Bends. A full live band, along with the Mike Nowland String Quartet, will create a unique and unforgettable night of music.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE

ASWAD

February 20 - 24 • Liverpool Empire

March 26 - 30 • Playhouse Theatre

March 31 • Camp and Furnace

Matthew Bourne’s ballet productions are always visually spectacular and cleverly adapted and this one’s no exception. If you’re familiar with the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton film then this brings it to life on stage in a beautiful way, using dance to tell the story of the boy made by an inventor with scissors for hands who’s left unfinished, alone and in a strange new world when his creator dies.

Based on Hanif Kureishi’s iconic and Oscar-nominated screenplay, which starred Daniel Day-Lewis, My Beautiful Laundrette is set in London during the Thatcher years and tells the story of young British Pakistani, Omar, and his relationship with an old school friend who helps renovate his uncle’s rundown laundrette. This stage version has original music composed by the Pet Shop Boys.

Britain’s most successful reggae band ASWAD have been performing since the mid-1970s, and has released an incredible total of 21 albums, with hit singles including Don't Turn Around and Shine. The threetime Grammy nominees will be heading to Liverpool in March for a one-night live gig at Camp and Furnace in the Baltic Triangle that’s not to be missed for any reggae fans.

VEGANUARY

2024 RESTAURANT GUIDE

W

6

ith an ever-increasing number of people choosing to go meat-free, Liverpool’s seen a big rise in the number of vegetarian and vegan options, whether that’s restaurants and cafes or just dedicated menus.

Veganuary was created to inspire people all over the world to try vegan cuisine, raising awareness and promoting vegan recipes, businesses and products to help make meatfree more accessible for everyone.

There’s now no shortage of fabulous plant-based dishes to choose from in and around the city, and vegan food’s not an afterthought anymore.

So, to celebrate Veganuary 2024, here are The Navigator’s pick of the best places to eat vegan in Liverpool…

THE EGG CAFE

THE CALEDONIA

BUNDOBUST

Long before veganism became so popular, The Egg Café was a go-to for those who knew in Liverpool. In the city centre, just off Renshaw Street on Newington, The Egg was the city’s first, and awardwinning vegan and vegetarian café. The cosy relaxed upstairs café, which acts as an informal gallery space for local artists, serves homecooked food - including its unmissable quiche - in generous portions.

If vegan food used to be a rarity then vegan pub grub was almost non-existent – but definitely not at The Caledonia. Just off Falkner Street in the beautiful Georgian Quarter, The Cali’s a proper traditional pub but there’s nothing old-fashioned about its menu. As well as regular live music and a community feel, it has a delicious vegan menu and a big following for its garlic parmesan fries.

Upstairs on Bold Street, Bundobust is the place to head if you fancy all-veggie Indian street food that’s also an award-winner. It’s open from lunchtime until late with a lively but dressed-down atmosphere and a whopper of a menu all served in recyclable cardboard bowls. The tarka dahl and rice bowl and bhaji butty are a top tip, and then fill up on sharing sides like the crispy okra fries.

DOWN THE HATCH

STANLEY’S BAR & GRILL

GLASS ONION

Another venue that’s stood the test of time in the centre due to its loyal fanbase, Down The Hatch is a plant-based kitchen and basement bar on Duke Street in the Ropewalks area of town. It’s open from afternoon to late evening and is especially loved for its meat-free burgers all with homemade patties, a choice of loaded fries and a lovely regularly-changing plant-based Sunday roast.

We’re happy to say that Titanic’s own Stanley’s Bar & Grill is up there with the best for vegan and vegetarian dishes. Our chefs have created a plant-based and meat-free selection on our a la carte menu including grilled kofta kebab and meatless sausage and mash, and we also have dedicated vegetarian and vegan afternoon teas with a Lanson Champagne option to make it extra special!

In south Liverpool and handy for Sefton, Calderstones and Greenbank parks, Glass Onion on Allerton Road is a great little daytime vegan and vegetarian café, perfect for breakfast, lunch or just a gorgeous freshbaked cake and coffee. It does amazing speciality hot chocolates too including Oreo, Maltesers, Biscoff, Nutella and chocolate orange, all pimped up with syrup, cream, and chocolate curls.

MARAY

BRASCO LOUNGE

SANSKRUTI

Middle Eastern small plates specialist Maray has always had a strong vegetarian and vegan element to its menu so it’s ideal if you’ve got a mix of meat and non-meat eaters. With a choice of two venues, the original on Bold Street and dockside at Royal Albert Dock, it has a dedicated vegan menu which features its famous Disco Cauliflower and a falafel sharer with hummus, tabouleh and fattoush.

With an excellent location for visiting the waterfront attractions, Brasco Lounge at Mann Island is a chain that doesn’t feel like a chain at all, it feels more like a homely gran’s living room! A large vegan menu has plenty of choices for brunch, lunch and dinner including its huge full English vegan breakfast, Goan cauliflower curry and Mexican superbowl. It has a tasty range of vegan cakes too.

This one takes a bit of finding – in the business district, a few minutes from the Town Hall, on Bixteth Street - but it’s worth the effort for freshly made vegan and veggie Indian food that gets consistently fivestar reviews. Go for authentic Punjabi, Gujarati and Rajasthani mains and stay for the chocolate heaven dessert, a brownie on a hot sizzler plate with hot vegan sauce and ice cream. 7

How important was the Black comedy circuit to you? It's very important to me because it allowed me to find my voice and be myself. When our elders couldn’t get into mainstream clubs, they had to go elsewhere. So we went to go to Hackney Empire, which is the Black comedy circuit hub. It gave me the confidence to be myself and discover my voice. But what I call mainstream comedy was important, too. It taught me the importance of structure to your material. It’s nice to have that raw voice, but sometimes structure is needed. So people can tell you’ve worked out your craft. Meeting Mo Gilligan on the circuit led to the Celebrity Gogglebox sofa and a huge hit with viewers… Honest to God, we were just being ourselves. We didn’t think, let's turn up the funny – we were literally just being ourselves. Most of the time we forgot that the cameras were there, which they always say, but it's true. And there's a lot that got cut out! We had the crew dying with laughter. And working with Mo is just the easiest thing. I wouldn't be sitting here now if it wasn’t for Mo and for Gogglebox. It wasn't just the fact of doing the show together, it was the fans' reactions to me and Mo. They really took to us as a duo, and they were like: ‘Who's that guy with Mo on the couch?’ Then when I went on tour with him, it was a rap. I felt really blessed because Mo's already Mo. But for me to launch my career off the back of that was incredible. Anyone else you need to thank for helping you get where you are today? The people who hated me! My teachers, because I used to work hard to have everyone in class laughing all the time. And my managers at Transport for London, especially one of them. Well, she loved me, but whilst we were on the workfloor she was like, ‘please just keep silent!’ You’re on a major UK tour with Babahood, what can we expect from it? abatunde Aléshé is one of the most in-demand comedians in the UK right now.

B

Who would you say were your biggest influences starting out?

He’s a star of sofa (thanks to Celebrity Gogglebox), screen (Live at The Apollo, Guessable, Comedians Giving Lectures, The Stand Up Sketch Show, and Jonathan Ross Stand Up Club to name a few), stage and podcast – his Mission Imagination series is an award-winner.

My first audience was my schoolmates in Tottenham, and then my auntie let me stay up late to watch my first stand-up special. Delirious by Eddie Murphy! I was like: what the hell is this? I just loved the feeling of laughing. You know when your stomach hurts, that feeling where it says, stop making me laugh for just five seconds? I love that. I crave that.

And not forgetting he was one of the stand-out campmates in 2022’s I’m A Celebrity, facing his fears and cheekily teasing former Health Secretary Matt Hancock about his Covid kissing scandal to last 19 days in the jungle.

So did watching TV play a big part then?

It’s already a CV any comedian would be very happy to have, and now he’s embarking on his first headline national tour, Babahood, that takes him to venues up and down the country from January to March. With a February date bringing him to Liverpool’s Playhouse Theatre, The Navigator found out more about his journey to success…

I was obsessed. I watched it all. From Cilla Black to Saturday night variety shows, if you had a bit that was laughter, I was hooked.

It focuses on me as someone who is now a dad, but who grew up without a dad. Now I’m having to navigate this whole new world and having to learn on the job. And also I’m learning as a husband, having had a single parent and never having that hands-on example of how a couple lives as a family. Getting to grips with that responsibility: that's what my tour is about. The more I started exploring the topic of fatherhood, it suddenly dawned on me that I needed to go down this route. As much as people want me to be like that explosive, energetic, funny funny funny guy, actually: I need a message as well. I'm scared to see how it goes! Babatunde brings his Babahood tour to the Playhouse on Saturday February 24.

Tell us about your first-ever gig... I was 17, it was in the library at Croydon Clocktower on 26th November 2003 and I did OK, I didn’t bomb! But you can tell, number one, that all my material was hacked. And, number two, you can tell I was 100% fresh. I did jokes about Africans seeing a volcano for the first time and thinking it was a giant bowl of pepper soup.

THINGS TO DO THIS

VALENTINE’S DAY W

e might be just a little biased, but at Titanic, we believe Liverpool is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

And now we’ve agreed on that, naturally, it’s also one of the best places to be on Valentine’s Day.

10

If you’re looking for somewhere to spend the day or evening with someone special, or even find the perfect spot for a proposal, here are The Navigator’s most romantic picks for where to celebrate love in Liverpool…

WHEEL OF LIVERPOOL

ROYAL ALBERT DOCK

HOT WATER COMEDY CLUB

If you’ve got a good head for heights then there’s no better way to see Liverpool’s incredible waterfront and the entire cityscape than from one of the gondolas on the Wheel of Liverpool. Next to M&S Bank Arena, the wheel towers 60ft high and climatecontrolled pods mean they’re fine in chilly February weather. There’s even an option to upgrade to a luxury VIP one with fizz and chocs.

Liverpool’s waterfront really is a stunner, and one of the highlights has to be the famous Grade I Royal Albert Dock which is such an intrinsic part of our maritime history. Now a world-class visitor attraction, it’s a lovely place to while away an afternoon or evening wandering around all the independent shops, restaurants and bars along the colonnades, taking loved-up selfies on the way.

Sharing a sense of humour and being able to make each other laugh is always listed among the top traits people look for in a partner, so it makes absolute sense to celebrate at a comedy club. Hot Water Comedy Club has two Valentine’s Triple Headline Specials at its new Blackstock Market venue on the night of February 14, at 7pm and 9.30pm, so take your funny Valentine.

SEFTON PARK PALM HOUSE

MAYA BLUE WELLNESS

CATCH A CLASSIC AT THE CINEMA

Away from the buzz of the city centre, south Liverpool has its own historic gem in Sefton Park. The Palm House is a Victorian glasshouse, dating back to the late 1800s, which was saved from dereliction and is now one of the city’s most beautiful landmarks. Combine a hand-in-hand stroll through the park with a look inside the Palm House and its fabulous collection of plants from around the world.

There are romantic spots all around Titanic, from our colonnades overlooking the waters of Stanley Dock to Rum Bar where you can enjoy a glass of fizz. But for a blissful Valentine's experience, escape to our subterranean spa Maya Blue Wellness and enjoy a luxury pampering together underneath the redbrick arches.

Chances are one of your first dates could well have been at the cinema – isn’t everyone’s? So recapture those early meet-ups with a night out watching a love story on the big screen. Picturehouse at FACT, just off Bold Street in the city centre, has a stellar line-up of mainstream and indie films all year round and it can be relied on to ramp up the romance and screen a classic for the 14th.

CROSBY BEACH

GRAVITY MAX

TATE LIVERPOOL

The beach is for all year round, not just sunny summer days, and if you’re all wrapped up and with someone special then even the crispest (or even soggiest) of days on the sands can be very romantic. Head to Crosby beach and take a walk through Antony Gormley’s famous Iron Men statues then adjourn to nearby Crosby Coffee for a mug of its freshly brewed in-house roasts.

If you’re one of those couples who loves to share high-adrenaline sports then this one is definitely a contender for your Valentine’s Day. Gravity Max opened in 2023 and it’s already one of Liverpool’s most popular entertainment venues thanks to so many things to do all under one roof. Challenge your partner to e-karting, AR bowling or maybe a round of urban golf – winner buys after-game drinks!

An art gallery date sounds straight from the script of a rom-com but it’s easy to make it a cute reality in Liverpool because we have so many galleries to choose from. Combine with a trip to the waterfront and go to Tate Liverpool in its new temporary home at Mann Island to take in the exhibitions and then share your thoughts over a bite to eat or coffee at the popular Tate café. 11

A NEW SHOW APARTMENT AT STANLEY DOCK’S LANDMARK TOBACCO WAREHOUSE CELEBRATES LOCAL HERITAGE AND CONTEMPORARY STYLE Located opposite the Titanic Hotel, the new waterfront neighbourhood of 550 New York warehouse-style homes is at the heart of Liverpool Docks’ waterfront regeneration. 14

TITANIC HOTEL GUESTS GAZING OUT ACROSS THE STILL WATERS OF STANLEY DOCK CAN’T FAIL TO BE AWESTRUCK BY ANOTHER LANDMARK BUILDING, THE MAGNIFICENT TOBACCO WAREHOUSE. One of the most important buildings on Liverpool’s historic docks, its extraordinary architecture and quayside spot puts it at the heart of the city’s £14 billion regeneration boom, in which the historic docklands have a key role. When it was built at the turn of the 20th century, as a tobacco warehouse and store for goods shipped from across the globe, Tobacco Warehouse became the largest brick building in the world, at an aweinspiring 14 storeys and with a floor area of more than 1.6 million sq. ft. Now meticulously restored and boldly reimagined, the iconic Grade II Listed building is being transformed into Liverpool’s hottest address, in a scheme of 550 warehouse-style duplex apartments and penthouses.

free festival of contemporary visual art, taking up a six month residency last summer in the dock side commercial space. Next door, the Ten Streets creative district is set to see historic industrial buildings transformed into eateries, bars and venues (joining existing residents like the Ten Streets Social and Invisible Wind Factory), and on the ever-evolving Liverpool skyline, the £500m Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock is taking shape. There’s always a stir, then, when a new show apartment is unveiled at Tobacco Warehouse, and the latest – interior designed by home-grown talent Natalie Holden, Founder of Natalie Holden Interiors – has even had a global showcase: it was handpicked by BBC producers as the backdrop for some of last year’s Eurovision contestants’ interviews.

The homes’ interiors are a carefully balanced blend of Victorian industrial hallmarks such as bare-faced brickwork, huge multi-paned windows and cast-iron floor to ceiling columns with inspirational open-plan layouts and sleek luxurious contemporary kitchens and bathrooms.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom 1,650 sq. ft. duplex, which offers striking views across the Stanley Dock to the Grade II* Listed Titanic Hotel, features an openplan kitchen and dining area framed theatrically by floor-to-ceiling black pillars on its upper floor. Down the elegant stairway, lined by a metal-spindled balustrade, a dramatic double-height space allows for living and entertaining on a grand scale; a huge bank of metal-framed windows allows light to pour in.

Tobacco Warehouse’s residents have been witness to the exciting regeneration of this Merseyside hot spot and the wider city beyond, making it one of Europe’s most dynamic and exciting places to live, a true centre of cultural life, with Liverpool Biennial, the UK’s largest

When it came to dreaming up the interiors scheme, Holden was inspired by both the building’s jawdropping Victorian architecture, its rich colours, textures and detailing, and her own childhood in the city.

“As a Liverpool local, I have driven past Tobacco Warehouse countless times, and dreamed of having the chance to design a home within it,” she says. “My team and I have paired industrial design inspiration with eclectic, contemporary furnishings and accessories, with a colour palette reflective of the building’s materials and surroundings. We’ve used a mix of heritage and earthy matt tones with finishes such as rust, ochre and teal. Luxurious materials adorn the spaces, including travertine, wood, bold velvets and textured bouclé.” Holden has styled the upper floor to have two seating areas, with dark wood and leather vintagestyle furniture, and has introduced towering modular shelving downstairs to display books, paintings and ceramics. Abstract art on the walls and huge house plants provide pops of colour and organic elements. This multi-layered apartment has appealed to both home-hunters at Tobacco Warehouse and existing residents, who have sought Holden’s advice on how to style their own properties. It’s a testament to her success in showcasing an inviting and comfortable space for living, working, relaxing and socialising in this destination waterfront address. The show apartment is for sale for £430,000, excluding furniture with a range of further apartments available from £265,000.
