The Mysterious Oceanco S/Y Black Pearl 106.7m The mysterious Black Pearl sailing yacht launched in September 2016 with sea trails in 2017. She was built by Dutch Oceanco and has a spectacular LOA of 106.7m/350’, making her the largest Dynara Rig in the world and one of the largest superyachts around. Few details have been officially released about this yacht making her cloak of secrecy intriguing and leaving us wanting more. Given a brief statement and a fantastic video full of interviews, this is what we have learned. The yacht was designed by Ken Freivokh & Nuvolari Lenard with Dykstra Naval Architects developing the naval architecture and interior by Nuvolari Lenard & Gerard P.Villate. Twelve guests can be accommodated in six cabins and while we do not have images, we can imagine the accommodations are stunning. Her dark blue hull is steel, superstructure aluminum and she is powered by two MTU 12V2000m 72 diesel engines. The keel is 4m and 80% is lead keeping the weight low and the top is fuel tanks. Black Pearl is registered in the Cayman Islands and is a tri-deck sailing yacht with a raised

pilothouse, extensive sundeck, sleek lines and gorgeous decking. She has a reported maximum speed of 17.5 knots while under power and without her sails. When it is time to let the winds take over she boasts a massive sail area of 2,887 sq.m. that uses black Dacron sailcloth with 50% solar cell coverage. Richard Tatlow, chief engineer, discusses her astonishing systems that maximize the use of energy using the solar cells to recharge the batteries and special propellers capable of reversing the blades to generate energy eliminating the need to run the diesel generators. Tatlow also tells us that it may be possible that Black Pearl could reach 30 knots and achieve a transatlantic voyage without fuel. Marcel Onkenhout, CEO of Oceanco, states that Black Pearl is not an experiment but a real challenge in the yacht building industry and all that has been put on the drawing board has never been done before. And finally, the charming captain, Chris Gartner, shares that his first impression of Black Pearl was disbelief. He was overcome and impressed with her beauty and performance – she is one of a kind.

Heesen Launched VanTom 50m

10

Love was in the air on February 14th, 2018, at Hessen Yachts as VanTom was delivered in international waters. She is a spectacular 50m/164’ motor superyacht. Her sea trails were conducted in the rough winter waters of the North Sea in January 2018, with waves up to one meter. Captain David Burge comments that her performance in the trails were extremely successful and that she ran very smooth. He looks forward to her maiden voyage to the Mediterranean Sea and the summer cruising season. The yacht’s designer is Frank Laupman at Omega Architects with the naval architect by Van Oossanen & Associates. The interior design is by award winning Francesco Paszkowski. Twelve guests in six cabins can be accommodated in the spacious VanTom with a crew of nine. The master suite is located on the main deck with awesome views to the outside while five guest suites are below decks. The yacht’s interior is a beautiful contemporary design and her personality reflected in elegant hand-crafted wood furniture and finishing’s. Dutch Heesen is proud that VanTom has an impressive top speed of 23.3 knots; this is .3 over the original contracted speed. She is the sixth yacht in the 50m semi-displacement class of the 5000 Aluminum Class. She is hailed to be a revolutionary offering with a highly efficient hard-chine hull and propulsion system. Being quiet and vibration-free will provide an enjoyable journey while having a range of 3,100 nautical miles, beam of 9m and a gross tonnage below the 500GT threshold. The semi-custom business model used by Heesen provided an effective and fortunate relationship with the Owner who was complementary of the relationship built on trust and respect.

CRN Latona 50m Launched Launched in a private ceremony on February 10, 2018, Latona is an elegant, five deck super motor yacht. She is gorgeous and her builder is Italian CRN of the Ferretti Group. Her inspiration is from the historic 1960’s Superconcero yacht. The project was created by CRN’s Engineering and Interiors & Design departments with the famous Zucco International. Latona is their first joint project and a raving success. CRN is known as an atelier where expert ‘tailors’ give each yacht their own unique personality. CRN shipyard is said to be a synonym of innovative craftsmanship for demanding and knowledgeable clients.

The Owner’s brief for Latona challenged the design team to create his vision of a magnificent vessel having a classic style with refined details. Her hull is steel and aluminum and she has an 8.6m beam. Her decks are wide allowing easy romantic strolls around the yacht. She has a large attractive terrace and exceptional balcony with extensive windows - as one would anticipate on a luxurious bit of heaven on earth. The garage is floodable meaning the tender accesses the water without using a davit. Latona is planning to make her world debut at the Monaco Yacht show this year.

Royal Huisman Aquarius 56m Launched bunk room. This room will be filled with laughter as happy guests settle in to begin a marvelous sailing adventure. It has twin beds that convert to a queen size and includes a set of Pullmans. A fully equipped gym ensures everyone will stay fit and also provides a Pullman. A large deck saloon, media room and stowage for toys are expertly arranged into the layout of the yacht. A 6.2 jet drive tender and Aero sailing boat will provide hours of fun. Aquarius has two Rondal masts where an interesting mizzen mast rests on a circular skylight above the Owner’s suite. Her white sails are magnificent and when viewing against the blue sky and water, you are drawn into her beauty. The interior design is approached using simple elegance and feature raised and fielded white painted paneling trimmed with fine varnished timber. Her dark hull is slender with long overhangs. Aquarius is absolutely stunning with quality and finish unmatched.

11

The spirit of individuality and realizing a dream - this is what Royal Huisman of The Netherlands promises its astute clientele. And they were remarkably successful in delivering Aquarius, a classic ketch 56m/184’ luxury sailing yacht. The Owner’s are an American couple who desired a yacht that was comfortable for cruising with their family and friends. Also included in their brief was a vessel well suited for Bucket regatta racing. While Aquarius looks beautiful while cruising through calm waters, she is fierce when her sails are full and the sun and waves splash upon her sailors’ faces. The naval architecture was by Dykstra Naval Architects and interior design by Mark Whiteley Design. Aquarius accommodates eight guests and eleven crew members. The Owner’s will enjoy a splitlevel master suite that comes with a private deckhouse and cockpit. There are three ensuite guest cabins where one is designated as the

It’s hard to find the right superlatives in my already superlative soaked vocabulary to describe Ngoni, the extraordinary new build by Royal Huisman Shipyard. This is simply a stunning yacht that will have people talking for decades. Perhaps its pedigree comes from a very clear design directive given by the yacht’s owner. “Build me a beast,” he said. “Don’t build me a sheep in wolfs clothing. This has to be an innovative and edgy weapon; fast and furious.” It looks to me that that is exactly what he got. It’s most certainly a weapon and a striking one at that. Ngoni is a 58-meter (198-foot) high-performance sloop designed by Dubois Naval Architects and featuring an innovative interior by Rick Baker, Ltd. There are two things that immediately jump out; the almost sinister looking plumb bow and the relatively narrow beam. Combined they make the boat look like some kind of Gucci missile. The other thing you immediately notice is the reverse sheer that runs from the bow aft toward the cockpit where it changes into a concave sheer to allow better visibility from the cockpit. The yacht tapers to an elegant stern complete with boarding platform. To give the yacht the weapon-like look that the owner insisted upon, the hull is painted in a bespoke metallic topcoat named “Claire de Lune” (moonlight). The paint was developed by the owner’s team and it was applied with an electrostatic coating technique that uses charged particles to bond the paint to the surface. The effect is quite extraordinary.

17

One of the owners other requirements was for the yacht to be very high performance and that starts with a generous sail plan. Indeed Ngoni has a massive sail plan. The square top mainsail alone is the size of four and a half tennis courts with the Blade Jib bigger than three tennis courts. It’s a very sleek combination that can be set and operated with the push of a button. The 20-meter long boom was custom designed and engineered so that the mainsail can be stowed inside to boom without any fuss. The square head mainsail and the gaff batten automatically attach and detach when the sail is raised and lowered. The jib is furled and unfurled with a hydraulic furling unit and the sheets are led under the deck to captive winches. The towering five spreader carbon fiber mast is one of the world’s three largest one-piece spars ever built. It was manufactured by Rondal, a sister company to Royal Huisman Shipyard, and is an incredible 66-meters (216.5-feet) high. In addition to the mainsail and blade the boat can also fly a staysail, a Code Sail which is for close upwind and reaching work, and a very large Gennaker. The Gennaker is an impressive 2,240 square meters in area which translates into more than 24,000 square feet. To offset the powerful sail plan Ngoni has a large hydraulically operated lifting keel. With the keel lowered the yacht has a draft of 8.10 meters (26.2 feet) which would precluded it from entering many harbors, yet with the keel raised the draft is reduced to 5.30 meters (17.4 feet). Staggeringly the fin and bulb together weigh 96 tons.

In order to achieve the kind of performance insisted upon by the owner there was great attention paid to the aerodynamics of all aspects of the yacht starting at the bow where there is no conventional pulpit. Instead the lifelines dead end on the deck just forward of the hydraulic jib furler. The anchor system deploys from a hatch system in the hull forward under the water which means that there is no clutter on the bow. The expansive teak foredeck is vast and completely flat interrupted only by two large winches which have been, along with all the deck hardware, bead-blasted to give them a uniform titanium look. This is just one of many examples that the crew like to call ‘attention to detail, in every detail’ aboard Ngoni. Embedded in the foredeck are giant flush hatches that conceal a large tender, a crane, spa pool, sail locker and cooled waste locker. Just aft of the mast is the sculpted, low profile superstructure of the deckhouse built from double curved molded glass. It’s a striking black and has four skylights which are not visible from the outside looking in, but which provide an abundance of natural light for those below. The enclosed cabin gives way to a hard top that covers an outdoor seating area allowing the owner and guests to dine al fresco if they like. At the back end of the cabin is another seating area that faces aft and if for some incomprehensible reason the guests are not happy with the view, the push of a button brings up a 75-inch television from within the cockpit counter. Aft of the outdoor seating area are the two steering stations which have been ergonomically designed to serve as eyecatching works of art as much as they are there for the practical purpose of steering the boat. In front of each wheel is a touch screen display that allows the helmsman to adjust the sails as well as carry out many other finger-tip precise tasks. Behind the wheel is a place where guests can relax and enjoy themselves out of the way of the sailing crew, and the exterior picture is capped off by a grand, curving staircase which descends elegantly down to the surface of the water.

24

There are two ways to enter below. There is a separate entrance near the aft beach deck that has direct access to the owners stateroom, or you can enter through glass doors in the enclosed deckhouse. The glass was chosen to make the transition from outside to below decks as seamless as possible and it is as the doors slide open to give you the first hint of the exciting materials, colors and finishes that are found throughout the yacht’s interior. To starboard there is a bar and dining area while to port there is an informal seating area with coffee tables and if so desired, a pop-up television.

The owners’ stateroom and guest accommodations are accessed via an elegant curving staircase that descends from the deckhouse to the guest lobby area. There is a superbly appointed twin guest cabin with spacious bathroom to port, and a double guest cabin featuring a Japanese bath to starboard. Both feature high quality exotic veneers, marbles and resin finishes. Large, rectangular ports offer superb natural lighting. The owners’ suite is all the way aft and is a full-beam stateroom with bespoke built-in furniture. There are twin doors to enter an enormous bathroom. There is also a spacious study with its own bathroom and a large gym area with an opening port in the topsides so that the owner can exercise with the fresh sea breeze adding to the vitality of the experience. This area is flooded with natural light and has a full set of weights, numerous pieces of cardiac equipment and even a punching bag. It’s clear that a good deal of thought and investment went into providing the crew with high-quality amenities and the ability for them to have their own privacy. There is accommodation

for up to nine crew in six crew cabins. Each cabin is beautifully appointed and have full ensuite bathroom and shower facilities. Aft of the sleeping quarters there is a bright, spacious and professionally equipped galley to starboard which opens to the crew mess on the port side. Just aft of the crew mess is a large laundry. Stairs from the adjacent deckhouse pantry give direct access to the service areas. It also provides access to the engine room although to call it an engine room seems to greatly diminish the space age space where the inner workings of the yacht are housed. The engine room is every yacht’s beating heart, most certainly for the engineer, but not always for guests who generally prefer to experience a tranquil environment aboard and would rather not listen to the rumble of the generators. Royal Huisman turned their usual surgical precision into an artform by designing and engineering Ngoni’s machinery space to exceptional standards. If this ‘art form’ cannot be seen by the casual observer, it most definitely cannot be heard by the owner or guests and that’s the way it is supposed to be. A yacht is always a sum of its parts, but Ngoni has so many exquisite parts that the sum in this case seems to be double its parts. Every inch of the yacht has been carefully thought out with meticulous attention paid to each and every detail. The yacht is indeed a piece of modern art yet it’s one that can transport the owners and their guests to far flung corners of the world. Imagine dropping anchor off the coast of Greenland. The pure majesty of ice and water and mountains and bird and sea life surround you. You can enjoy the view from on deck where the air is crisp and cold, or you can watch from below where the sumptuous warmth leaves an inner glow, a feeling that will last a lifetime. The design directive from the owner was to build him a beast. I think he got more than a beast. He got a beauty, one that is indeed innovative and edgy, fast and furious. 31

The owner’s core requirements of the interior design team were simple in the extreme, yet offered a clear indication of what he wanted with plenty of room for creative interpretation. “Don’t design a traditional yacht interior,” he said. He went on to elaborate, “The scheme should have flowing curves interspersed with organic detailing and unique materials. The interior should have a masculine feel.” What resulted was a unique, vibrant, stylish and somewhat sensual interior that flows from one space to the next. Rick Baker, whose company was charged with creating the interior, described it this way. “The use of vivid resins, combined with sculpted metal surfaces was to give an overall fluid feel throughout, however each area was to retain its own design identity.’

At times we have an intense desire to blend into our surroundings and absorb the positive energy of a favorite place and time. A sanctuary formulates in our minds - a place where we find peace and serenity. Our fears are calmed and souls replenished to ready us to enthusiastically conquer another day. As a superyacht owner, this image of renewal is often found in deep blue waters where we become one with a vast landscape of wonder. We breathe in the salty smells of the sea and listen to soothing sounds of ocean waves. Our sense of wellbeing overflows. The stunning and open concept of Azimut Grande 35 Metri captures the essence of living in style and elegance while keeping in harmony with the massive sphere of water, wind, and sky. Azimut Grande 35 Metri is an astonishing 114’ft/35m superyacht. The builder is Azimut Yachts based in Avigliana, in the regal and charming province of Turin in Italy. It is a brand of the Azimut Benetti Group that is known and respected throughout the industry. Paolo Vitelli, a courageous and determined young university student, began chartering sailing boats in 1969 that eventually grew and is a powerhouse in the industry. Today, Azimut Yachts is renowned worldwide for building yachts and superyachts. Azimut Grande 35 Metri is a member of the exclusive Grande Collection and being hailed its flagship. Italian traditions of style and superior craftsmanship are incorporated into each of Azimut’s yachts, yet Azimut Grande 35 Metri has succeeded in finding ways to improve the performance and arrangement of space creating a truly grand superyacht. One of many important achievements is attributed to the carbon fiber superstructure light-weight design, allowing its reduced structural weight to be offset and realized with bigger volumes. This yacht is delivered with the highest quality in this category and brings innovative ideas to realization. Exterior

49

Whether walking across the deck of Azimut Grande 35 Metri or admiring her from afar, her exterior is impressive and her styling and concept is attributed to the brilliance of Stefano Righini. He has a long and established relationship working with Azimut Yachts and developed creative solutions to expand social spaces and incorporate a large beach club. The yacht’s overall look is handsome with sharp features and sleek lines with a wide body and raised pilot house. A distinguishing element of this yacht is its large windows in the bow and saloon allowing unprecedented views to the outside. The yacht, with its white exterior and dark windows, cut through the waters in full command while looking dashingly spectacular.

Interior The interior design is by Achille Salvagni who created a cool, soft, and custom styling that is designed to complement and contrast with the bold exterior. He achieved this using custom and unique furnishings from floor to ceiling. His signature chairs and lamps with smooth surfaces enhance the airy atmosphere. The lighting is set into the white ceilings. The theme carried throughout Azimut Grande 35 Metri seamlessly integrates the natural light that spills into each room with its curved walls, furnishings, and dĂŠcor of contrasting dark and light elements. The approach was questioned by the team at first, but they were eventually won over and the final layout has received terrific approval from the yachting community. Main Deck

54

The master suite is located on the main deck. There is a full height port window that folds down and out to create a fascinating private balcony. Teak decking slides from underneath the cabin floor and stainless steel guardrails fall into position securing the space. It is the largest extending terrace on the market and unprecedented on a yacht this size. The balcony provides views just for you while reflecting on your good fortune. An attractively designed desk and chair are placed in front of a window and has a beautiful ocean view. The en-suite bathroom has lovely marble sinks and striking dark mahogany cabinets. You imagine yourself humming as you prepare in the luxurious room for an adventurous day in

the bay. The large plush king sized bed is covered with white bedding and sits on a circular rug. It is placed away from the wall and anchored by a low-height headboard that wraps around the head of the bed and holds shaded lamps over end tables. Behind the bed a row of curved cabinets are full height providing an abundance of storage. The pale neutral walls, ceilings, and flooring are trimmed with light toned furniture and accents of dark wood mahogany. The result is a space that is welcoming, bright, and pleasant. Main Saloon As you enter the main saloon a gentle sea breeze welcomes you as it blows through the open balcony. The space embraces the warmth of the outdoors with streams of light and the sweet melody of seabirds. A delicious gin and tonic is waiting for you next to your favorite novel. The inviting circular sofa is trimmed at the bottom with a punch of bright blue while soft turquoise pillows pull the colors of the sea into the room. It is a gorgeous contemporary room with mahogany topped cabinets with bronze trim set against the wall. The sofa is placed center of a plush round neutral colored rug. The dining table seats ten with a breathtaking view through large windows. You anticipate hosting many dinner parties with your chef’s most celebrated dishes for you and your guests to enjoy. Polished brass accents and art add a touch of class to the space. The curved edges of the furniture, walls, and ceiling soften the large fresh room. Artfully placed dark panels reflect the natural light and contrast nicely with the light surfaces.

Flybridge Entertaining and mastery of style and comfort must have been the designers’ inspiration for the flybridge. A circular bar and elegant bench-length table with comfortable shade seating calls for the ultimate social gathering and al fresco dining event. The light woods, white furniture, and stainless steel metal accents reflect the stunning colors of the blue sea and green landscapes from shoreline. Four plush aft chairs provide a spot in the sun for lively conversation with friends. Foredeck When standing on the foredeck with the warmth of the sun on your face you admire the yachts elegance and design. The generous 330 square foot area is staged with a large white sofa and table. Two sun pads sit forward and are separated by a walkway stepping down to the spa pool. You know that many hours of fun in the sun will be enjoyed in this space. The aweinspiring views create the perfect venue to have an evening cocktail and visit with friends while cruising into a sunset. A display of vibrant colors of orange and red splashed across the horizon bring us a step closer to finding the inner peace and selfreflection we often desire and only find overlooking the ocean. Lower Deck

59

The lower deck will serve your family and guests with their own luxurious space to rest. The deck is smartly arranged with two VIP double bed suites and two guest suites with twin beds. The elegant pallet of neutral tones and dark wood surfaces are also used in the suites’ decor. A large central lobby provides access to the guest suites. A winding staircase connects all three decks on the yacht and has a beautiful curved wall that follows the stairs. The dreamy steps are backlit onyx and create a floating sensation. The steps are white lacquer and mother of pearl. In a separate area, four crew cabins are located on this deck and accommodate up to six members along with a crew mess. A side garage is used for an 18’ tender and a two seat personal watercraft, a noteworthy feature for a yacht this size. The transom door flips down and makes a wonderful lounging area. A bar is revealed when the door is down and available to serve strawberry smoothies, refreshing water, and your favorite cocktails while sunning or after jumping in for a swim.

Superior Construction Technology & Design The hull length, with the platform, is 114’/35m. Superior in design, the carbon fiber superstructure boasts a D2P hull with wave piercer. The piercer may pose a challenge when maneuvering in close quarters but it resists swiveling at low speeds helping to stay on course. It also reduces the buoyance of the bow making a smoother cruising experience while underway. Incredible success is achieved with the increased volumes throughout the yacht without the cost of increased weight. Special attention was given during design to reducing noise and vibration. The epoxy resin is also incorporated into the material list due to its excellent mechanical characteristics. The beam max is a comfortable width of 24.7’/7.5m. The draft and displacement, both at full load, is approximately 1.91m and 154t respectively and fitted with twin 2,400hp MTUs. The maximum speed is an impressive 26 knots and she cruises at a comfortable 21 knots. The fuel capacity is 18,000l and water capacity 3,000l, making it possible to enjoy long range cruises. Accolades & Admiration Azimut Grande 35 Metri is an award winning superyacht that is built on wonders of innovations for her design and technical performance. Amazingly the design concepts continue to push the known boundaries of style, arrangement, and physical capabilities to produce fantastic superyachts. She was honored with the custom yacht award by Motorboat&Yachting at the gala event set in the Rosewood Hotel in London on January 10, of this year. The panel noted the yacht’s wave piercing hull, spacious side garage, and the stunning balcony in the master suite as reasons for their selection. Azimut Grande 35 Metri was also judged the Best International Motorboat Over 30 Meters by the Christofle Yacht Style panel at the Phuket Rendez-Vous. This event also took place in January and marked the magazine’s 10th anniversary. These awards follow winning the Motor Boat Awards and Best Interior Design 80-125 feet from Yacht France. Also in January, another honor was bestowed on her at a ceremony held at the spectacular ski resort in the Austrian Alps, Kitzbühel. Giovanna Vitelli, board member of Azimut Benetti SpA, graciously accepted the prestigious Best New Production Yacht Design award at the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards 2018. The panel cited many reasons for the deserved recognition including unique design, more volume, instant balcony, stern beach club, huge Flybridge and optional Sundeck on a third level, carbon fiber superstructure, and wave piercer. Azimut Grande 35 Metri is an extraordinary luxury superyacht.

Vitters 44m

SVEA

69

70

71

72

For those who are fans of the America’s Cup, the recent revitalization of J-Class yachts—boats that are built to be both luxurious and high-performing—is certainly something to be excited about. Leading the way in this revitalization is Vitters’ beautiful rendition Svea. Svea is a ship that, according to Vitters, has been over 80 years in the making. The designs for the ship were first produced in the 1930s by the legenardy Swedish designer Tore Holm, and though these designs seemed to have been lost for decades, their recent discovery presented ship builders with the unique opportunity to blend the best of the old with the best of the new. There are a variety of different things that seem to place Svea in a class of her own. Not only is she able to combine timetested aesthetics with modern technology, but she is also the longest J-Class boat to ever make it to open waters. Though, at 43.6 meters long, she may be a bit larger than some of her competitors, the designers exerted a tremendous amount of effort in order to assure that she will still be able to move as swiftly as anyone else. An epic design process When yacht designer John Lammerts Van Bueren first discovered Tore Holm’s old designs for his 1930s ‘super J’ model, he knew that these designs were something he was going to have to put to good use. Stumbling upon plans such as these was something that was clearly a rare opportunity that he needed to make the most of.

73

After teaming up with Andre Hoek, one of the most widely praised yacht designers in the entire world, the process of designing the Svea was officially underway. Designing a super J yacht is something that requires a tremendous amount of precision, skill, and attention to detail—because the ship is distinctively larger than others in its class, the designers had to make sure to balance all of the benefits of its size (such as speed and power) while making sure that the yacht was something that could still move with agility and finesse.

74

75

With a proven track-record in the world of naval architecture, Hoek Design embraced this project and committed itself to the absolute pursuit of perfection. Though 80 years had passed, the older plans were still quite detailed and capable of lasting the tests of time. The lines plans were used as they were originally designed which gave the initial draft of the ship’s design a very classic look. But, considering the tremendous amount of progress that has been made in the shipbuilding industry over the years, Vitters and Hoek also sought to modernize the design and make changes where necessary. Notable changes that were made by the design team include the redrawing of the hull lines, minor freeboard adjustments, the use of high-tensile aluminum, and various changes needed to assure that the Svea was completely compliant with class regulations. Blending the best of the old with the best of the new, the design team was ready to move forward and engage in what has proven to be a uniquely exciting project unlike almost anything else. Architecturally sound There is a reason that Hoek Design has earned the stellar reputation as a design team it currently enjoys around the world. Hoek Design is known for their strong attention to detail, commitment to excellence, and their ability to focus on multiple different objectives (performance, capacity, luxury, etc.) at once. Teaming up with a world-class shipbuilder such as Vitters is something that clearly made perfect sense—with all sides of the shipbuilding process fully accounted for, Svea is something that yachting enthusiasts have been waiting to see for quite some time. The overall length of the hull is measured at a precise 43.60 meters and the overall length of the waterline is an appropriate 26.55 meters. Additionally, the beam is measured at 6.63 meters, making this ship proportionately ideal. The gross tonnage of Svea is 120 tons—an impressive figure for a ship built for speed—and the ballast is also measure at an impressive 95 tons.

76

The main engine is a Scania DI-13 081 M which is able to produce 331kw of power at 1800 RPM. The manual steering gear is designed by Edson and the hydraulic steering gear is designed by Claasen. Keeping each of these facts and figures in mind, it becomes quite clear that this ship is ready to establish itself atop of its class and offer tremendously satisfactory performance. The design team worked painstakingly long hours in order to assure absolute perfection and once you are able to witness Svea moving across open waters, it becomes immediately apparent that these efforts have paid off.

Ready to win in all conditions When the news first broke about Vitter’s ongoing construction of Svea, some skeptics were led to believe that this project was simply being undertaken for what was—quite literally—old time’s sake. But this ship is built for much more than the revitalization of some historic designs. It is a ship that is built to win and built to do so without sacrificing any of the luxuries that have made modern racing yachts so distinct. Svea made her racing debut in the spring of 2017. After gaining experience in her first race, she was able to pull out a remarkable win by her second race—the America’s Cup J-Class regatta. This major victory at one of the most prestigious races in the world was one that demonstrated to the yachting community that combining the best of the old with the best of the new is a principle that can truly pay off. Every detail involved in the construction of this beautiful yacht was done with the pursuit of victory in mind. She is wellequipped to handle all possible conditions she may face. Whether she is confronted with warmth or the cold, whether she is confronted with upwinds or downwinds, or whether she is confronted with rain or shine, it has become abundantly clear that Vitters proud project is ready to perform.

83

As a new racing season is rapidly approaching, those who hold this yacht in high esteem certainly have a lot to look forward to. Svea is actively preparing to defend her title as the winner of the America’s Cup, and though the competition is sure to be fierce, the dedicated crew beneath her sails strive to settle for nothing less than first place.

World-class luxury This yacht is one that is built to perform. But, keeping up with the spirit of the yachting community, the entire team—Vitters, Hoek Design, and interior architect Pieter Beeldsnijder of deVosedeVries Design—wanted to make sure the ship would also be as luxurious as possible. Without making any sacrifice to the performance of the ship, the design team was able to smoothly include 3 luxurious cabins for the owner and guests in addition to 4 quality cabins for the crew. The windows were outfitted by Nissink Glass and the hardware of deck was provided by Harken, combining to create an absolutely beautiful exterior appearance. As you walk the deck of the ship the attention to luxurious detail becomes immediately apparent. The combination of polished woods, a comfortable lounging area, and a steering wheel with a classic design make the aesthetics of this ship truly timeless. Furthermore, as you walk beneath the deck, the attention to detail continues. The area beneath the deck is surprisingly spacious, well-lit, and conducive to social gatherings. When Svea is not racing, she is still able to provide much of what any owner could possibly demand in a yacht. Svea, may be one of the most perfectly designed racing yachts of her class. At 43.6 meters long—the longest J-Class yacht in the world—she is demonstrably capable of outperforming her competition while simultaneously moving with agility and grace. The combination of her (literally) timeless design, her commitment to luxury, and her unique history make Svea a yacht that enthusiasts everywhere are sure to continue hearing about for years to come. Vitters, Hoek Design, deVosedeVries Design, the owners, and everyone else involved in the construction of this truly timeless masterpiece certainly have a lot to be proud of.

LETANI

Feadship Letani Proves to be an Absolute Masterpiece One of the things it seems makes the yachting industry so brilliantly unique is the commitment of many shipbuilders to be continuously pursuing perfection. The world’s greatest design teams are the ones who are willing to take chances, pay attention to the smallest details, and continue thinking of new ways to improve. From the moments you lay eyes upon her, you can immediately tell that Letani is a yacht that hopes to make a statement. Her innovative design scheme and her artistic devotion to aesthetics make her an absolute masterpiece that any yacht owner ought to be proud to show off the world. Letani is not a yacht you would ever want to leave sitting in the harbor for very long. She is a beautiful work of art that yearns to be seen by all who respect the elegant craft that created her. She was built to see the world and, it seems, the world could not possibly be more blessed to have her as a guest. Because Letani was constructed with an intention to explore the Far East, the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, The Indian Ocean, and elsewhere, her features are made to adapt to all sorts of different climates. Though she may only be 35 meters long, the design team sought to include elements of both luxury and minimalism. Both her indoor and outdoor spaces are elegantly furnished and intelligently put to good use. As you stand upon her upper deck, your favorite drink in hand, the sun will begin to set, and you will realize you are home. Intelligent, adaptive design Letani is a yacht that was designed by the well-reputed Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects and though she was certainly designed to explore the world, she exhibits numerous characteristics that are distinctively Dutch. The exterior design has a recognizably post-modern flavor that challenges oldfashioned shipbuilding techniques in favor of something distinctively different. Yet, even though the uniqueness of her style is abundantly apparent, she demonstrates the commitment to form and detail that many Dutch shipbuilders have been known for around the world. Despite the design team’s respectable obsession with aesthetics and her apparent geometric distinctiveness, Letani is still capable of reaching a top speed of 20 knots. The main (2) engines are MTU 16V2000M93, which are excellent engines for relatively long-distance journeys. Letani is capable of travelling up to 3,200 nautical miles—a range demonstrating the ability to potentially cross the Atlantic Ocean.

99

Letani has a fuel capacity of 25,400 liters and a fresh water capacity of 5,800 liters. Both of these figures are rather impressive considering she is only 35 meters in length. Other figures to take note of include the beam height of 7.9 meters and the (loaded) draught of 1.8 meters. When examining Letani’s overall design scheme, it is obvious that neither engineering nor artistic excellence needed to be sacrificed in the course of her creation.

Stepping aboard a true work of art Feadship is a shipbuilder that can trace its origins all the way back to 1840’s Holland. The company has maintained its excellent reputation around the world because with every new project they are assigned, they seem to relentlessly commit themselves to making the final product absolutely perfect. Design, engineering, and construction were all considered holistically together. Ultimately, each of the individual components of the ship seem to benefit from the synergy produced by the others. From the moment you first lay eyes upon Letani, the relentless commitments of the design team become immediately apparent. Her form, her thoughtful use of materials, and the uninterrupted flow of design between different parts of the ship are just a few of the reasons her exterior is so remarkable. Even though is she is 35 meters in length, she still projects a sort of artistic authority that is usually only reserved for ships of much greater sizes. Once you step aboard, the unapologetic commitment to excellence continues. The interior design was done by Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design and the furniture was done by Liaigre. The primary goal of the interior design process was to create a warm and comfortable environment. The team wanted to include everything that was necessary without including anything that would be considered excessive. As Feadship has become known for, the use of decorative glass is notably present throughout the entirety of the ship. Combined with the bright colors chosen by the interior design team, Letani makes use of natural light in every way she possible can. As you walk through the ship, greeted by warm sea breezes and a flood of sunlight, you will feel blanketed in the soft glow of nirvana. As you walk down each deck, the ample use of stained woods, beautiful artwork, and minimalist design elements create a perfectly balanced aesthetic. Contrary to some yachts with this apparent level of distinctness, there is nothing about Letani that seems unnatural, tacky, or coerced. Getting to witness her beauty firsthand creates a sort of Zen-like sense of harmony. Indoor and outdoor spaces The main deck of Letani was designed to be as usable and useful as possible. Consequently, the indoor portion of the main deck is divided into three distinctive zones. The first of these zones is a well-furnished, bistro-style dining room. The middle zone functions as a library, movie room, and general gathering space. In the zone that is the furthest forward, you will find the owner’s stateroom and an exceptionally spacious bathroom. The designs for each of these zones feature some distinct themes of their own, but at the same time, they flow together quite naturally. The main deck has the comfortability of a wellfurnished and well-decorated apartment, yet, the design team made sure to not neglect the spirit of the open sea.

102

The outdoor space is what really makes for an authentic yachting experience. The decks are constructed bright, well-stained woods. Incorporating brightly colored furniture also helps to make the ship seem bigger and cleaner. The decks are carefully layered to maximize sun exposure and open space.

103

104

105

106

107

108

These decks feature direct access to open water, plenty of space to enjoy the rays of the sun, ample dining and seating areas, and numerous other features. It seems there is truly nothing greater than spending the day out at sea with family and friends, enjoying the sun, and appreciating everything that makes life wonderful. As you wander down to the lower deck, you will continue to be impressed by what the design team was able to do with relatively limited space. The guest suites (aft) feature L-shaped beds which make the main parts of their rooms more available for other uses. The suite is also designed to be easily reconfigured. There is enough room for six adult guests and six crew members—a surprising capacity for a ship of this size. Moving into the future Though relatively new to the open sea, Letani is a yacht that is already beginning to establish a well-deserved reputation everywhere she goes. The owners intend to use this yacht as often as they can, and with an adventurous spirit, it seems Letani has the opportunity to become a name known around the world. What makes the creation of Letani so distinctively impressive is the design team’s ability to simultaneously incorporate modern aesthetics with the traditional features of a yacht that have been proven to withstand the relentless scrutiny of time. This is a

yacht that, undeniably, will still be an impressive work of art 50, even 100, years into the future. Everywhere you look aboard Letani, the careful commitment to balancing luxury and minimalism is abundantantly apparent. There is nowhere on the ship where it seems the aesthetic appeal is excessive or overdone; yet, at the same time, it seems there is nowhere on the ship where the owners could ever be left wanting for more. Between the interior and the exterior, performance and appearance, the modern and the post-modern aesthetic, it seems harmony is the word that best describes the essence of Letani. Though there is little telling what the future has in store, what remains clear is that Letani has made a statement about taking chances and making bold decisions. This yacht was built to lead, not to follow.
