Cara Fitzgerald Hometown: Indianapolis, IN How Long Have You Been with MWR: I started in January 2017 as an intern before accepting a position with NSE in April. Fun Facts: I trained my dog to turn the lights on and off in the house. Favorite Outdoor Activity: Kayaking Most Memorable Trip: Canoeing for five days in the Boundary Waters on the border of Minnesota and Canada. Advice for Someone New to Outdoor Activities: Find your sources, so you know what you need to know before you go. Why did I become a guide? I love the outdoors and teaching others to enjoy the outdoors as well.

Most Memorable Trip: Mt. Saint Helens 2016
Hometown: Other than some time living in Alaska, the mountains and waters of the PNW have always been home to me.
Advice for Someone New to Outdoor Activities: Try something new and enjoy the experience! Plan and prepare for the worst. Enjoy the moment. The Northwest is one of the greatest places in the world.
How Long Have You Been with MWR: I started with MWR a little over a year ago and it’s an honor to serve these families. Being a military spouse for the last 16 years and raising my girls in the midst of
RECREATION PROGRAMS
Fun Facts: Before working as a guide, I worked as an Engineer and Captain on ships, mainly in the Puget Sound. I’m also a Wilderness Ranger for the USFS in the summer. Favorite Outdoor Activity: Going into the back country and snowboarding with my family, or spending long summer days paddling and scuba diving around the San Juan Islands. Most Memorable Trip: A brown bear came out of the woods behind me while fishing on the Russian River in AK. There I was, holding a nine month old baby girl, debating if I should jump into the deep part of the river or stand my ground. Fortunately, he didn’t bother with us - the big guy just wanted our fish. Glad he grabbed someone else’s stringer, because we had a good catch that day! Advice for Someone New to Outdoor Activities: Go for it! No good story ever started with “we were sitting on the couch, flipping through the commercials again”. Make sure to educate yourself about the risks and go with a group, if you feel in over your head, but don’t be afraid to jump in. It will be worth it! There is so much to be explored and experienced if you just take that first step.
Summer Dahozy Hometown: Mukilteo, WA How Long Have You Been with MWR: 5 years. Fun Facts: I’ve summited the three tallest mountains in Washington State: Mount Rainier, Mount Adams and Mount Baker. Favorite Outdoor Activity: I love all outdoor activities! In the summertime, I do my summer mountain climbs, but I also try to spend as much time on the water as possible, whether that is river fishing, floating, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. In the winter, I love to go snowshoeing. Advice for Someone New to Outdoor Activities: Growing up in the PNW, I have learned a few things: Always bring a headlamp regardless of your “planned” return time. It gets dark in the trees earlier than the scheduled sunset and, if you have one, it lets you be spontaneous and stay for the sunset view if you want to! Bring a rain jacket no matter the forecast - I always have a rain jacket stuffed in the bottom of my backpack for those “just in case” rain showers that will quickly roll through the Cascade Mountains. Check the weather and the trail conditions prior to leaving the house. Lastly, don’t forget your trail permit! Most trails in Washington State require a permit and can easily be bought once a year and displayed in your car.
How Long Have You Been with MWR: 22 years Fun Facts: Teaches Oceanography at Tacoma Community College. Favorite Outdoor Activity: Kayaking
Brent Roth Hometown: Salem, OR How Long Have You Been with MWR: 10 months. Fun Facts: I am an ACA instructor for Paddle Raft and Swiftwater Rescue. I am also a pirate. Favorite Outdoor Activity: Whitewater Rafting Most Memorable Trip: Hmmm, this is a tough one. The best trip would be rafting the Grand Canyon for 18 days. The worst trip would be the 24-day rafting trip on the Rio Maranon in Peru. Both very memorable in their own way. Advice for Someone New to Outdoor Activities: Just get out and do something! There is so much the PNW has to offer, you just have to quit making excuses and get outside.
Most Memorable Trip: Any kayaking trip where I encountered whales. Advice for Someone New to Outdoor Activities: Take advantage of the outdoor programs offered by MWR! Learn about the area, the equipment you need and how to use it, and how to safely enjoy the many outdoor recreation opportunities in the Pacific Northwest.
Steve Cain Hometown: Monticello, IN How long have you worked for MWR: I began in December 2015 as a volunteer guide, then advanced to a paid guide in February of 2016. Fun Facts: I’m a retired police officer with 35 years under my utility belt. I make a mean margarita!
Michael McCuddin Why Did You Become a Guide? I had just completed whitewater guide training, and was looking for a rafting company to guide for. Around the same time, MWR started their rafting program at NBK. I needed someone to raft with, and they needed a guide. Hometown: I moved here from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and live in Port Orchard.
Favorite Outdoor Activity: Anything with snow! I really enjoy teaching snow skills to folks, especially when I can take them on their first snow trip. I love seeing their face light up at how BEAUTIFUL the scenery is in winter, and how much fun snowshoeing really is! Most Memorable Trip: I’ve done LOTS of multi-day backpacking trips over the years, including the remote Bailey Range and a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. The most memorable trip took place in September of last year. Four friends and I hiked 84 miles
on a very rugged and remote portion of the newly designated Bigfoot Trail in northern California. Spoiler Alert! The most memorable is yet to come! As I’m taking five months to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail! Covering 2,650 miles, as I hike from Mexico to Canada! Advice for Someone New to Outdoor Activities: First, get your face out of your phone! Don’t be the 99% of people who, if they get outdoors, never go further than a quarter mile from the parking lot. There is unimaginable beauty out there, just waiting for you to see it in real time. My advice is: do the initial research, ask questions from someone who gets out there, don’t purchase your outdoor gear (borrow or rent first), take some classes, and go with an experienced guide first. Then, go out and do it yourself! Challenge yourself to become good at what you do. Why did I become a guide? I have a passion for the outdoors, and it truly pleases me to share that passion and help others get outside. I would like to show you some of the astounding things I have seen. I think that most folks would like to get outdoors and experience it, but are intimidated by not knowing where to start. I can help you in that respect. YOU. Yes, I’m talking to the person reading this right now. Nature holds all the answers you’re looking for. Go outside and ask her some questions; open your heart and listen to the response. Then, come and walk with me; let me open your eyes!
have led hundreds of hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, whitewater rafting, ocean kayaking, climbing, and biking trips!

Fun Facts: I retired from the submarine service and traded in my sea legs for my outdoor legs. After surfing the coasts of Southern California, I relocated to the Bangor area. It was here that I took up new hobbies, like hiking, backpacking, and snowshoeing. I quickly mastered back country skills and went on to lead many outdoor adventures.
