Head Coach First Season • Maine ‘97 Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC, was appointed the Naval Academy's 28th head sprint football coach in July 2010. Maury, who was a four-year letterwinner as a tight end at Maine from 1993-96, brings an impressive list of credentials to the Academy. "I'm ecstatic to be here," Maury said. "After meeting with all of our players, I'm really fired up for the season ahead. The student-athletes play for the love of the game and each has a great attitude. We've got a great staff in place and I'm eager to get going." While at Maine, Maury served as one of the tri-captains on the 1996 Yankee Conference New England Division Champion team for coach Jack Cosgrove. He began his career for the Black Bears under current University of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. Upon graduation from Maine in the spring of 1997, Maury went to work for two years as a contractor for the Navy in Washington, D.C., prior to joining the Marine Corps in 1999. Following completion of basic training, Maury attended flight school in Pensacola, Fla., and Corpus Christi, Texas for a total of two years before his first active duty tour as a KC-130 pilot sent him to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. He then went on to VMGR-452, a Reserve KC-130 Squadron located at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, N.Y. The Pennsylvania native was deployed to Iraq on three occasions, most recently in 2005 and has accrued 2400 flight hours throughout his career. Maury inherits a Navy sprint football team that enters the 2010 campaign with a program-record 23-game winning streak, dating back to 2006. The Midshipmen own a 57-3 overall record, including a 37-2 mark in conference play, over the last nine seasons. Maury replaced Maj. Jake Jenkins, USMC, whose three-year appointment ended after the 2009 season. Jenkins posted a perfect 20-0 record in his three seasons leading the program. "We've had quite a run here lately," said Maury. "The excitement around the program is tremendous."

2010 Season Outlook
One of the hallmarks of a successful program is consistency, and with a record 34 Collegiate Sprint Football League titles and a 23-game winning streak to start the season, the Navy sprint football team truly exemplifies that characteristic. With first-year head coach Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC, at the helm and the return of 36 letterwinners from last season, the Mids will look to claim their fourth consecutive league title in 2010. Plenty of firepower returns this season to a Navy offense that outscored its opponents by a margin of 219-50 in 2009. A stout Navy defense that allowed an average of just 7.1 points-per-game last season also returns several key starters.
Sophomore John-Rex Spivey and freshman David Lorio have shown the ability to perform as well and will serve as solid backups to Terronez.
Running Backs An area of certain strength for the Mids this season is the offensive backfield. With several, experienced tailbacks, Navy’s ground game holds the key to its offensive attack this season.
“The backfield, by far, is our strongest position,” Maury said. “We have a very good, young group of backs.”
Senior Marty Meehan, junior Jordan Foley and sophomores Denzel Reina and Will Harris bring different elements to the game and all will figure into the mix in 2010.
Meehan averaged 8.9 yards on 20 carries last season, while the multipurpose Foley racked up 185 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, 139 return yards and caught two passes for 46 yards in 2009.
“Foley is such a versatile guy,” said Maury. “We can put him at receiver, too. He’s kind of a jack-of-all-trades.”
Reina was the Mids’ second-leading rusher with 347 yards last season.
The fullbacks leading the way also possess the ability to control the ground game for the Mids. Sophomores D.J. Hooper and Tyshan Larry lead the group which also expects significant contributions from freshman David Williams.
Receivers A talented corps of receivers, that features members from each class, will provide Terronez with dependable targets all season long. “Receiver is another stacked position for us,” Maury said. “It’s a good mix of guys from every class.”
Seniors JoJo Catrini and Steve Friedrick, juniors Erik Erlandson and Drew Presnell, sophomore Darrin McElroy and freshmen Mike Buck and Tracy Daniels will all get ample opportunities to make plays at the wide receiver position this season. The leading returner is Catrini, who led Navy in catches last season with 15 for 270 yards.
Kaleb Kaetterhenry returns for his senior season as the Mids’ tight end. He caught three passes for 42 yards and had one touchdown a season ago.
“The young guys have really stepped up so far,” said Maury. “The more reps they get, they better they will be.”
Senior Brandon Beckler and sophomore Drew Owens will also figure into the Mids’ rotation up front.
Defensive Line Seniors leaders Luke Pye, Jeremy Harbaugh and Emery Persinger will anchor the defensive line; the trio combined for 65 tackles a season ago. But again, similar to other positions on the team, a solid group of underclassmen make the defensive line one of the team’s strengths.
“The young guys are really stepping up,” Maury said. “We have three seniors on the defensive line, but behind them, we’ve got a couple freshmen and sophomores that are doing a terrific job.”
One underclassman that has impressed the coaching staff is Lewistown, Pa., native Julian Jerzerick.
“Jerz is impressive for a sophomore,” said Maury. “He just seems to never tire, his motor is constantly running.”
Linebackers Navy’s starting linebackers are also a solid group in seniors Viet Vo and Cartwright Hall and sophomore Will Parker. Vo was second on the team in tackles last season with 38, including 4.5 tackles-for-loss. Hall had 25 stops last season while Parker stared all seven games as a freshman.
“Playing middle linebacker,Will is our defensive play caller,” Maury said. “That’s pretty good for a sophomore. He’s a very intelligent individual.”
Defensive Backs Co-captain Mike Nolan leads a defensive backfield that will play a significant role in the overall success of the Mids’ defense this season. Nolan joins Zzmarr Stone, Stephen Meidus and James Han; all started at least four games last season.
“Mike is certainly our leader back there,” said Maury. “He is a straightup football player and is impressive to watch. He has a great nose for the ball.” Nolan and Stone each had three interceptions last season.
“Zzmarr is a pretty big for a corner back and he’s a shutdown corner,” Maury said.
Junior Vince DeBenedetti saw action in six games last year and will be back in the mix this season as well. “Our DBs could do great things this year,” said Maury.
Special Teams Freshman kicker Adrian Montecinos will handle field goals and extra points and while just a freshman, he has shown the ability to step up immediately. Montecinos replaces David Reifenberg, who left as the program’s all-time leader in extra points and field goals.`
“Adrian has just been Mr. Consistency,” Maury said. “All of his kicks have been splitting the uprights.”
Will Parker will handle punting duties while Michael DeLong will be the team’s kickoff specialist.

Quarterback Senior co-captain Tyler Terronez started all seven games and was an honorable mention All-CSFL selection last season.Terronez went 61-of151 with nine TDs and just two interceptions in 2009, and the experienced quarterback has appeared in 14 games entering the 2010 campaign.
Offensive Line Returning starters Cody Nissen, Sean Fergerson and All-CSFL guard Matt Williams provide the needed stability up front for the Mids. All three players started at least four games last season and their experience will benefit newcomers Ryan Keys and Joshua Escobar, who have already made an impact.

WHAT IS SPRINT FOOTBALL? What is sprint football? Well … it’s quite simple. It’s the same as regular football. Helmet, shoulder pads, cleats, oblong-shaped ball, 100-yard field, field goal posts, sidelines, end zones … and the list goes on. You name it and it’s in the game. The only difference is that the players who compete in sprint must weigh no more than 172 pounds 48 hours prior to kickoff. But don’t be fooled by the size, because these guys can play.

The History
The evolution of 150-pound football was started in the early 1930s by a Penn president to assure the small student-athlete an opportunity to compete in football on the intercollegiate level. Founded as the Eastern 150-Pound Football League in 1934, the original league had seven members: Cornell, Lafayette, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Rutgers, Villanova and Yale. Throughout the years, a number of teams have either joined or resigned their presence in the league. In 1946, Navy fielded its first squad, with Army following suit in 1957.This year, Mansfield will play a full-fledged schedule against Navy, Army, Cornell, Penn and Princeton. During the next 25 years, athletes became bigger forcing the weight limit to increase from 150 pounds to 154 pounds, and later to 159 pounds. At that time, the league was called the Eastern Lightweight Football League. Prior to the 1996 season, the ELFL increased the weight limit again, this time to 165 pounds just two days before the first game of the season. In 2004, the league made another change to the weight requirement when it upped the maximum weight to 166 pounds. Again in 2005, the weight maximum increased to 172 pounds. The 1998 season marked the elimination of the term “Lightweight” and replaced with the word “Sprint,” a word that expresses the quickness, speed and caliber of play in the league, while serving as a marketing tool to attract new teams. That year the league was renamed the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL). Five teams comprise the current CSFL and include:Army, Cornell, Navy, Pennsylvania and Princeton. The league has also produced some heavyweight alums, including Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who was a former standout as he played for Princeton in 1954. The league is not just limited to government officials but standout coaching legends as well. George Allen, who began his coaching career in 1947 as an assistant on the now-disbanded Michigan 150-pound team, went on to become head coach of the Washington Redskins.
The Players
At weigh-ins, which are done two days in advance of kickoff, players must report under the maximum allowed weight of 172 pounds. Sprint is very similar to wrestling in that the players constantly watch their diets. In addition to all the football drills that take place during practice, athletes will run several times throughout practice and in their free time to keep the weight in check. However, after weigh-ins, players can eat what they want as most reach 175 pounds by game day. The average weight for the athletes during the season ranges between 155 to 175 pounds. During the off-season, players’ weights fluctuate with some going as high as 185 pounds. However, as summer practice approaches, players go through their own training programs to make weight safely and get ready for the new season. Height doesn’t matter in the league. Most of the players are generally between 5’6” and 6’0” tall, but there are always exceptions to the rule as some are as tall as 6’3”. The league is a perfect opportunity for players to continue compet-
ing in the sport they love. Most of the players in the league were told throughout their high school careers that they were too small to play at the intercollegiate level. However, this sport gives them the chance to fulfill their dreams. Because of the players’ size, proper technique and execution are taught rather than just bulking up. Due to this element, sprint teams regularly beat Division III junior varsity teams that have 300 pounders scattered throughout the roster.
Naval Academy Tradition
There are few schools that can match the tradition of sprint football at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Midshipmen have won 26 outright and 33 total league championships, both of which are the most in CSFL history. In their 63 years of competing in the sport, the Midshipmen have totaled an impressive 310-62-9 record for an .825 winning percentage. In addition to those impressive numbers, Navy has also outscored its opponents by an all-time score of 10,372 to 3,602, an average of 17.8 points per game. In a rivalry as intense as the ‘big boy’ counterparts, Navy and Army have battled in sprint football 68 times, with the Midshipmen coming away victorious 37 times with one tie. Navy has rattled off a seriesrecord 10-straight wins against its service academy rival, with two of the largest margins of victory in series history during this run. “This lighter side of Army-Navy is no joke,” Sports Illustrated writer John Walters said in his article about the sport in a November 2003 issue of Sports Illustrated on Campus. Former Navy head coach Maj. Joseph R. Clearfield, USMC, concurs. “It’s just unbelievable how hard these guys (Navy and Army) play. This was how football was meant to be played, with 11 guys flying around with reckless abandon.”

As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers.
Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in 1933. Today, the Academy offers 18 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities.
USNA MISSION STATEMENT “To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future deployment in mind and character to assume the highest responsiblities of command, citizenship and government.

From the first athletic competition played on the gridiron in 1879 to Navy's recent triumphs, several events, people, rivalries and personalities have shaped the entire Naval Academy athletic program. Below is a look at just some of the history and traditions that make Navy one of the most storied programs in all of collegiate athletics.
ANCHORS AWEIGH "Anchors Aweigh" was written by Lt. Charles Zimmermann, Musical Director of the Naval Academy in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles of the Class of 1906, as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class instead of the usual class march Zimmermann had composed for previous classes. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game, and when the Midshipmen won the game, the song became traditional at this game. It gained national exposure in the 1920s and 1930s when it was heard on the radio and was in a number of popular movies. In 1997 a one-hour documentary on the history of Navy football, titled "Anchors Aweigh for Honor and Glory", was produced by NFL Films. The film was deemed a success by both critics and fans alike. Here are the words: Stand Navy down the field, Sails set to the sky, We'll never change our course, So Army you steer shy. Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh, Sail Navy down the field, And sink the Army, Sink the Army Grey
BILL THE GOAT The first recorded use of a goat mascot for Navy athletic teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (The Chief) was turned over to the Brigade by young officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 triumph over Army that year. Two cats, a dog, and a carrier pigeon have also enjoyed brief reigns as the Navy mascot, but goats have served without interruption since 1904. Bill XXXII and XXXIII and XXXIV are the current mascots. They are taken care of by 15 goathandlers made up of five midshipmen from the first, second and third classes. The goathandlers undergo rigorous training prior to handling Bill on the field. BLUE & GOLD This song was written in 1923 by Cmdr. Roy DeS. Horn, USN (Ret.) with music composed by J.W. Crosley. Following every home athletic competition, the team faces its fans with their hands on their heart and sings the following notes:-

The Blue Angels perform an air show along the Severn River on the northern bank of the Academy each spring during Commissioning Week.
Now, colleges from sea to sea May sing of colors true; But who has better right than we To hoist a symbol hue? For sailors brave in battle fair, Since fighting days of old, Have proved the sailor's right to wear The Navy Blue and Gold
The Navy football team gathered for the traditional singing of the Blue & Gold following its win over Air Force in 2009, its seventh-consecutive win over its rival. Below: The men’s lacrosse team sang an emotional rendition of Blue & Gold following its overtime victory over rival Johns Hopkins in 2010.
MIDSHIPMAN The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed "amidships," i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, however, the second 's' had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the sailor's trade.
In the early days of the American Navy, midshipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed several times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress restored the original title of Midshipman, and it has remained unchanged since.
TECUMSEH The familiar Native American figurehead facing Bancroft Hall and Tecumseh Court has been an Annapolis resident since 1866. Originally, the figurehead of the USS Delaware was meant to portray Tamanend, the great chief of the Delawares. It developed that Tamanend was a lover of peace and did not strike the fancy of the Brigade. Looking for another name, Midshipmen referred to the figurehead as Powhatan and King Philip before finally settling on Tecumseh, the fierce Shawnee chieftain who lived from 1768-1813. The original wooden statue was replaced after some 50 years in the open weather by a durable bronze replica, presented by the Class of 1891. It is considered a good-luck "mascot" for the midshipmen, who in times past would throw pennies at it and offer left-handed salutes whenever they wanted a 'favor', such as a sports win over West Point, or spiritual help for examinations. These days it receives a fresh coat of war paint and is often decorated in various themes during football weeks and other special occasions such as Commissioning Week.

ENTERPRISE BELL From the bridge of the famed World War II aircraft carrier, it has been a part of the Naval Academy tradition since 1950. The late Admiral Harry W. Hill, then Superintendent, was instrumental in bringing the "E" Bell to Annapolis. It rings when the Academy observes Morning Colors and also during special ceremonies when Navy scores a majority of victories over Army in any one of the three sports seasons. The bell also rings during Commissioning Week for those teams that beat Army and have not participated in a previous bell-ringing during the academic year. The bell is stationed in front of Bancroft Hall.

At the Naval Academy, beating Army is important. Plebes yell “Beat Army!” in Bancroft Hall, “Beat Army!” is on every weight in the Naval Academy weight rooms, and alums and fans alike scream “Beat Army!” at the end of Blue & Gold, the Naval Academy’s alma mater.

Navy has dominated Army in all sports, posting a winning record against the Black Knights in 36 of the last 39 years and winning the N-Star series 14-consecutive years. Navy has claimed the overall series win in 17 of the last 18 seasons.
23 of Navy’s 32 varsity sports have the potential to take part in the Army-Navy rivalry each year.
The annual showdown between the two rivals in each sport is deemed the Star Game with the players from the winning team receiving a Star for their lettersweaters. For those sports that face Army multiple times in a season, the Star Game isdesignated prior to the start of the year.
