Dr. Sho Fukushima Head Coach 24th Year at Navy • 240-245 (.495) Washington ‘71

Dr. Sho Fukushima, a tenured professor in Physical Education, has guided the Navy gymnastics program for the past 23 seasons with class, honor and dignity. The numbers -- both academically and athletically -- that have been produced during Fukushima’s tenure speak for themselves.

In 1997-98, 1999-00, 2004-05 and 2007-08, Fukushima was named Coach of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) and was named Men’s Team Coach of the Year by USA Gymnastics. He was also named East Region Coach of the Year by the coaches’ association and, two years ago, was honored as the ECAC Coach of the Year.

In the classroom, Fukushima has produced 55 All-America Scholar-Athletes, and in the athletic arena, he has coached the Mids to a total of 39 NCAA Championship qualifying performances.

“The individual awards are nice, but what is special when some of my former gymnasts have returned and finally thanked me for what I was able to do for them when they were here,” he added. “That is what makes coaching special.”

“When I first arrived at the Naval Academy, there was no organization at all in the program,” Fukushima said. “I was determined to change everything in the program and have it fit my liking. It took nearly three years, but I was finally able to blend Midshipmen who excelled in the classroom and in the athletic arena.”

Fukushima, who owns a 240-245 (.495) all-time record, came to Navy in 1991 after coaching in several places around the world.

Last season, the Mids continued to succeed both in competition and in the classroom, as a program-record eight gymnasts competed in the NCAA qualification meet and nine earned All-American Scholar-Athlete honors from the College Gymnastics Association. As a program, Navy recorded a team GPA of 3.304, the highest since the CGA began ranking the teams in 1991. Navy was fourth in the nation in combined GPA. During the regular season, Fukushima and the Mids got back to their winning ways versus the Black Knights of Army with a 422.3 to 420.1 home victory in February.

He began his gymnastics career in Japan and moved onto other places, including the Montreal Olympics and the Verna World Championships. He has coached five Olympians and five USA National Team members. He has also published two books on gymnastics in Sweden and England, in addition to writing numerous articles in Europe, Japan and the United States. Fukushima graduated from Washington with a B.A. and M.S., and completed his Ph.D. at California in 1984. He earned the Pac-8 Conference ScholarAthlete-of-the-Year award in 1971, while also achieving All-America status. He was Pac-10 Coach of the Year at California three times (1984,`87,`89) and was also NCAA Western Region Coach of the Year in 1980.

During the 2013 season, Fukushima provided tutelage to junior Chris Junghans, who qualified for and competed in the NCAA Championships. Junghans finished 12th overall, just 0.4 points out of 10th place. Fukushima’s Midshipmen also garnered accolades for their academic work as six gymnasts were named as All-American Scholor-Athletes. As a team, the 2013 Mids had the fifth highest GPA in the nation.

Nine Midshipmen Earn 2014 All-America Scholar-Athlete Accolades

In 2012, Fukushima guided Navy to its fourth consecutive Star as the Mids defeated Army in Annapolis. Fukushima also mentored Andrew Faulk to one of the best individual seasons in program history. Faulk was named a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top senior male gymnast. He was the first Nissen-Emery Award finalist from Navy since 1973. Faulk, who placed 13th in the all-around at the NCAA Championships, also earned the Thompson Trophy Cup, which is presented annually to the midshipman, male or female, who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy.

As a team, Navy ranked fourth in the nation in with a team grade point average of 3.304, while nine Midshipmen were honored as AllAmerica Scholar-Athletes. Rising seniors Joshua Steves and Ian Grinaski, rising juniors Josh Gong, Connor Westrick, David Frick, Eric Morrison, Eric Poletti and Andrew Potts and rising sophomore Wyatt Lapointe garnered All-America Scholar-Athlete accolades for posting GPAs above 3.2. Steves (honors mathematics), Grinaski (astrophysics), Gong (physics), Westrick (systems engineering), Frick (mathematics), Poletti (mathematics) and LaPointe (history) all garnered first-team status by posting GPAs of 3.6 or higher.

During the 2009 season, he guided the Mids to one of their finest seasons since taking over the reigns, as they finished with an impressive 15-4 record and coached Navy to a N-Star victory at Army, in addition to its secondstraight All-Academy Championship. The Midshipmen also earned their first trip as a team to the NCAA Qualifying Meet.

Potts (quantitative economics) and Morrison (cyber operations) earned second-team All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for their GPAs between 3.2 and 3.49, respectively.

The accomplishments of his athletes at Navy has also brought him much deserved individual recognition as well.

Assistant Coach 16th Year at Navy Syracuse ‘95

His efforts in the gym have not gone unrecognized, as he was named the 2007 NCAA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year, 2006 and ’08 USAG Collegiate Division Assistant Coach of the Year, 2007 and ‘11 ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year and 2007 CGA Regional Co-Assistant Coach of the Year.

Craig Holt enters his 16th season as Navy assistant coach. Holt brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in the sport of gymnastics as both a former athlete and assistant coach. “Navy is a program built on maximizing individual achievement for the good of the team’s success,” Holt said. “As a team, our training is intense, consistent and scientific. This model helps us develop a strong base of physical gymnastics skill, mental preparation and a strong character.”

During the summer of 2005, Holt coached the United States team in the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Holt guided the United States to a second-place team finish with gold medal performances in the floor exercise and pommel horse. In addition to his coaching duties, Holt also served as a judge at the Maccabiah Games.

Last season, Holt helped guide an eight-man crew of Midshipmen into action at the NCAA Championship Qualifying Meet at the University of Michigan. Eight participants marked a new program record.

Holt came to the Academy after serving as an assistant coach for one season at William & Mary and two years at his alma mater, Syracuse.

In 2013, Holt aided junior Chris Junghans qualify and compete in the NCAA Championships. Junghans finished 12th overall in the all-around competition and just missed placing in the top 10 by 0.4 points.

Holt’s commitment to the Navy program in and out of the gym was recognized in 2003 as he was named the ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year.

Prior to Junghans, Holt helped coach Andrew Faulk to his spectacular 2012 season, which included a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2011, Holt was named ECAC Tri-Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped guide Dylan Parrott and Andrew Faulk to the NCAA Championships.

“I would like all of our athletes to leave the Naval Academy knowing that they have the tools to not only meet, but exceed all that is expected of them,” he added. “They should have a strong sense of confidence and accomplishment as they begin their careers.”

In 2009, Holt assisted in helping the Midshipmen to a memorable season, as they finished with an impressive 15-4 record and a N-Star victory at Army. In addition, the Mids won their second-straight All-Academy Championship, placed second at the ECAC Championship and advanced as a team to the NCAA Qualifying Meet for the first time in program history.

As a gymnast, Holt was an NCAA finalist on the rings in 1994. He is a 1995 graduate of Syracuse, where he earned a degree in physical education. Holt earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Syracuse in the summer of 2002.

SEASON PREVIEW

Bringing back a veteran squad, the 2015 version of the Navy gymnastics team will look to continue its maturation and improve on solid 2014 results.

The third staple in Navy’s weekly lineup is Viscardi. Similar to his fellow seniors, he has produced high scores in a variety of disciplines. In 2014, Viscardi was one of three Mids to earn spots in the NCAA Qualifying Meet for his work in the floor exercise. Five times during the regular season, Viscardi finished in the top four at meets in the event. He also recorded 11 scores on the vault and 10 on the rings during the year. His 14.35 showing on the rings at the All-Academy Championship was a career-high.

“The unity of the team may be the key for Navy gymnastics in 2015,” said Navy head coach Dr. Sho Fukushima. “We will need contributions from the plebes and more importantly, we will need our returning gymnasts to upgrade their performance level to the next notch.” “The tone for the 2015 season will begin with the senior class of Thomas Goodell, Joshua Steves and Eric Viscardi. How well they lead the rest of their shipmates to recreate last year’s success and also into the ECAC Championships and NCAA Qualifying Meet will be important. These seniors all have special events that they will lead Navy in competitions this season; Goodell in rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar, Steves in vault and rings and Viscardi in floor exercise, rings and vault.”

“In addition to the three seniors, which newcomers will step up and fill the big shoes left by 2014 graduate Chris Junghans, may be the key to success or failure for the team this season,” remarked Fukushima. The Midshipmen welcome four freshmen to the squad for the 2015 season; A.J. Beal, Noah Beeman, Vadim Ivanov and Andy Jones. All four have had significant success in regional action, as well as on the national platform at the Junior Olympic Nationals.

Goodell was a leading performer on the rings for Navy in 2014. He earned a spot in the NCAA Qualifying Meet as a result of five scores of 14.5 or better on the apparatus during the season. After posting a career-high 14.9 at William & Mary in early March he came back at the end of the month and scored a 14.75 result in the finals of the ECAC Championships, good for third place. Goodell also competed in horizontal bar events in every meet for Navy, as well as four times in the parallel bar discipline during 2014.

“Noah Beeman may challenge the difficult assignment on floor exercise, pommel horse and horizontal bar,” said Fukushima. “A.J. Beal may squeeze in the lineup in floor exercise, pommel horse and possibly horizontal bar, while Vadim Ivanov may surprise us on a few events.” “However, the core of Navy’s power has to come from its junior and sophomore classes,” acknowledged Fukushima. “With an additional year to improve their gymnastics skill difficulties and mastery level, these midshipmen; juniors Connor Gonzales, Mitchell Larios, Eric Morrison, Eric Poletti, Andrew Potts and Connor Westrick, and sophomore Jonny Tang will loom large.” Larios returns for his junior season after competing in a team-high three events at the 2014 NCAA Qualifying Meet. The Texas native exhibited great versatility and skill for the Mids last year as he competed in the floor exercise, vault and parallel bars with strong results. Larios made the individual finals in two events at both the

Another senior leader on the rings for the Midshipmen is Steves. Posting 10 scores on the rings as a junior, the Houston native recorded the highest scoring routine of the year for Navy with the program’s first-ever 15-plus result on the rings at the All-Academy Championships; Steves notched a 15.2 score. With five results of 14.5 or better during the year, he competed in the NCAA Qualifying Meet and was Navy’s highest finisher with a 15th place showing of 14.45. Steves also recorded nine scores on the vault with a 14.85 at the USAG Team Championships as a career-high.

ECAC Championships and USAG Championships. His 14.15 score on the parallel bars in the individual finals of the ECACs ranked him first overall.

quartet of Josh Gong, David Frick, Michael Dorsey and Zac Ceroli will be joined by sophomores John-Charles Arion and Wyatt Lapointe.

Morrison, Potts and Westrick finished the 2014 campaign as Navy’s top three scorers in pommel horse action. The trio habitually found itself amongst the top 10 in the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League throughout the year. Morrison led the way and earned a spot in the NCAA Qualifying Meet. Of his 12 scores recorded on the pommel horse during the season, he notched five of 14.0 or better, including a career-high 14.5 versus Army in the Star Meet.

Navy kicks off its season on January 16 with the two-day West Point Open. Hosted by Army, the Mids will be in team competition on Friday night before the top scoring individuals battle for event honors on Saturday night. The following Saturday, January 24, the Mids will host their annual Navy Open at Macdonough Hall. William & Mary, Temple and Springfield are all scheduled to compete at the open.

Potts joined Morrison as Navy pommel horse participants at the 2014 NCAA Qualifying Meet. Potts consistently recorded solid scores for the Mids throughout the season on the pommel horse as he scored between 13.75 and 14.25 in nine of 14 outings. The second event that he competed in at the NCAA Qualifier was the horizontal bar. Potts posted 12 scores, of which seven were a 13.6 or better.

Navy’s lone head-to-head home meet in 2015 will be on Sunday, Feb. 1 as the Mids welcome the Tribe of William & Mary. The back end of the home-and-home between the two programs will occur a month later on Sunday, March 8 in Williamsburg, Va.

Westrick is the third pommel horse constant on Navy’s roster. Similar to Morrison he also raised his level of performance versus the rival Black Knights as he earned a career-high 15.0 on the pommel horse in February. Westrick was also a leader for the Mids in parallel bar action as he finished amongst the top three Navy scorers in five different meets.

A trip to Houston for the All-Academy Championships on Saturday, February 7, will split a stretch of four dual meets in seven weeks for Navy. The Mids will look to improve on its second place finish from 2014, in which Air Force came in first and Army finished third. Dual action will pick right back up the following weekend when the Mids travel to West Point to defend its 2014 Star Meet victory on Saturday, Feb. 14. After their return trip to William & Mary on March 8, the Mids’ final regular season dual meet is scheduled for Saturday, March 14 in Springfield, Mass. versus the Springfield College Pride.

Poletti demonstrated all-around versatility for the Mids as a sophomore in 2014 as he recorded scores in four separate events and consistently in floor exercise, rings and horizontal bar. He notched career-highs at William & Mary in early March with a 13.75 in floor exercise, 14.15 on the rings and 14.1 on the horizontal bar. The final junior with high expectations from Fukushima is Gonzales. After seeing time in just one meet for Navy as a freshman in 2013, he worked his way into important roles during events such as the All-Academy Championship and the Star Meet versus Army in 2014. A specialist on the rings, Gonzales scored a careerhigh 14.0 against the Black Knights before duplicating that result versus William & Mary the following week.

The championship portion of the Mids’ schedule begins with the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships. Hosted by Air Force, Navy will take part in the team event on Friday, March 20 before the individual champions are decided on Saturday. The same format applies to the action the next weekend in West Point for the ECAC Championships. The team and all-around titles will be determined on Friday, March 27, while the individual titles will be up for grabs on Saturday, March 28.

The direct replacement for Junghans in all-around contests is Tang. After competing alongside the 2014 captain, Tang will step into the role as Navy’s leading threat in the all-around this season. During his freshman campaign, Tang scored between 79.1 and 83.6 in all nine of the meets in which he suited up for. In February at the Star Meet, he finished top-six overall in five of the disciplines and notched a career-high with 83.6 points. Tang concluded his debut season by competing in the floor exercise and horizontal bar events at the NCAA Qualifying Meet.

The final event for the Mids in 2015 will be the NCAA Championships. The three days of championship action begins on Thursday, April 9 with the Qualifying Meet. The team, all-around and individual finals will on April 10 and 11, respectively. The 2015 NCAA Qualifying Meet and Championships will take place in Norman, Oklahoma on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.

A group of six Mids will provide depth at the beginning of the season and potentially look to break into the starting lineup as the season progresses. The junior
