I I I 2015-16 NAVY MEN‘S TENNIS I I I Chris Garner

Head Coach Second Season Ohio State ‘07

2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year 2009, 2011 NESCAC Coach of the Year Chris Garner enters his second season as the head coach of the Navy men’s tennis team in the fall of 2015. His first season at Navy was a memorable one as he guided the Mids to an overall record of 20-11 and the Patriot League Tournament title. Six of Navy’s 11 losses on the season came to teams that held a national ranking at some point during the season: Old Dominion, UNC Wilmington, Colelge of Charleston, San Francisco and Fresno State during the regular season, with a loss to Texas coming in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Garner was selected as the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year at the end of his inaugural season at Navy. Garner arrived on The Yard fresh off of leading Amherst to the 2014 NCAA (DIII) Championship. The Lord Jeffs posted a 36-3 record during the 2013-14 season to win the program’s second NCAA team crown in four years. Additionally that year, Joey Fritz won the NCAA singles title while Fritz teamed with Justin Reindel to advance to the semifinal round in doubles. The 2014 crown capped Garner’s seven-year stint as the head coach at Amherst. He guided the Lord Jeffs to an overall record of 199-43 (.822) –– 134-16 (.893) over the last four seasons –– and to at least the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament in five of his years. Amherst won NCAA crowns in 2011 and ‘14, advanced to the NCAA finals in 2009 and ‘10, and won the third-place match in the 2013 edition of the tournament. The Lord Jeffs also reached the quarterfinal round in the 2012 edition of the event, which gave Garner a record of 24-4 in six seasons of NCAA Tournament play. Amherst also compiled a 49-7 (.875) record in NESCAC regular season matches under Garner. The Lord Jeffs entered the conference tournament seeded no lower than second in each of his last six seasons, which included them earning the No. 1 seed in 2011, ‘12 and ‘13. The program would go on to claim three NESCAC Tournament titles (2011, ‘12, ‘14), reach the finals on two additional occasions (2009, ‘13) and post a 9-4 (.692) record in NESCAC Tournament play. Nationally, Garner’s players totaled 22 ITA All-America accolades. In addition to the 2014 run of success by Fritz and Reindel, Austin Chafetz and Luis Rattenhuber won the 2012 NCAA doubles title and Mark Kahan advanced to the 2013 singles final.

On an NESCAC level, Amherst players totaled 29 all-conference certificates during the Garner era. This included Zack Lerner, who was the co-player of the year in 2009, Chafetz, who was tabbed as the conference rookie of the year that same season, and Andrew Yaraghi, who was named as the 2013 rookie of the year. Garner himself was honored by the NESCAC as the coach of the year in both 2009 and ‘11. A native of Long Island, N.Y., Garner was a standout player in his own right. He was the No. 1 ranked player in the country in the 14-and-under age group in 1983, the No. 1 ranked player in the under 16’s in 1984 and was the No. 3 player in the under 18’s from 1985-86. He competed on the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team from 1985-87 and amassed 12 National Junior titles before entering the collegiate ranks. Garner earned All-America honors at the Georgia before joining the professional tour. He attained an ATP ranking of No. 120 in 1991, advanced to the Round of 16 at the 1993 Australian Open and recorded victories over some of the top players in the world during his pro career. After his professional playing career ended in 1994, Garner served as a private tennis coach for both professional and junior players before becoming an assistant coach at Colorado for one season (2004-05). The Buffaloes ended his lone season at the school ranked 59th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and with a 9-15 record. He would then spend two years as an assistant coach at Ohio State, during which time he also completed his undergraduate degree. In his two seasons, the Buckeyes were a combined 26-0 against Big Ten competition during the regular season and conference tournament, compiled an overall record of 58-4 –– 28-2 in 2005-06; 30-2 in 2006-07 –– advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament in both seasons and ended the years ranked fifth and third, respectively, by the ITA. Garner was tabbed as the head coach at Amherst in the fall of 2007. A grandfather of his fought in the Navy during World War II and was stationed on the USS New Orleans and the USS Salt Lake City. The Garner family, which includes wife Monika, daughter Gigi and sons Luke and Finn, resides in Annapolis.

Associate Head Coach 15th Season Washington College ‘96

Volunteer Assistant Coach Sixth Season Eastern Kentucky ‘88

John Moreland is in his 15th season as the associate head coach for the Navy men’s tennis program. The Mids have compiled a 224-152 dual match record during his 14 seasons, which includes a record of 73-26 against Patriot League foes. Over the last nine seasons, Navy has posted an overall record of 159-95, a 54-11 mark versus league foes and has won six Patriot League Tournament titles. Moreland was selected as the 2009 ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year following a season in which he helped guide the Mids to an 18-8 record and the third of the team’s four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. He also led the Mid-Atlantic Section Team at the 2013, ‘14 and ‘15 USTA Boys 18s National Team Championship. After graduating from Washington College (Chestertown, Md.) in 1996, Moreland immediately began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Marietta College (Marietta, Ohio). He would return to his alma mater in 1998 as an assistant coach for both tennis programs at the school. During his two years at the school he coached two singles players and four doubles players who earned All-America honors, as well as a pair of ITA regional singles and doubles champions. Moreland would serve as the head coach of the men’s and women’s teams at St. Mary’s College for one season prior to arriving at Navy. He would coach the conference women’s rookie of the year during his lone campaign at St. Mary’s. In addition to his Bachelor’s Degree from Washington College, he also earned a Master’s Degree from the school in 2004. Moreland and his wife, Kay, reside in Annapolis with their son, John Michael, who was born in 2015.

The 2015-16 season will be Jim Laitta’s sixth as a volunteer assistant coach with the program. Laitta served as an assistant coach at Ohio State during the 2009-10 season prior to his arrival at Navy. The Buckeyes compiled a 35-2 record on the year and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to the eventual national champions, USC. Prior to his one-year stint in Columbus, Ohio, Laitta spent 19 seasons as a head coach with the Maryland tennis programs. While coaching the men’s team for all 19 years in College Park, he also served as the head coach of the school’s women’s team for his first 11 years at the school. When he arrived in College Park, neither tennis program received any scholarship funding. The women’s team became fully funded in his eighth season while the men’s program reached that level toward the end of his time at the school. Despite those limitations, Laitta led the women’s team to a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances (1996, ‘98, ‘99) and saw the men’s program earn a national ranking in each of his final three seasons. Individually, he was tabbed as the ACC Women’s Coach of the Year in 1996. A 1988 graduate of Eastern Kentucky, Laitta began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Mississippi State women’s team during the 1988-89 season. Mississippi State’s doubles tandem of Claire Pollard and Jackie Holden won the NCAA national championship that season. He then was elevated to head coach for the 1989-90 campaign before departing for Maryland after the conclusion of the season.

The U.S. Naval Academy dedicated and opened the Tose Family Tennis Center and the entire Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex during the fall of 2007. The tennis portion of the facility, named after Maurice (‘78) and Terri Tose and their family, features six indoor and six outdoor tennis courts, with the indoor hard courts encompassing some 49,000 square feet. The outdoor courts include the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium, named after Rick (‘61) and Donna Fluegel and Bill (‘61) and Sandra Moore, while one indoor court has been dedicated in the name of James (‘58) and Rosemary Adkins. “Our new indoor tennis facility will be a tremendous addition for our team training, as well as a draw for future recruits,” said Navy head coach John Officer. “The facility is first class and already has to be considered one of the finest in the country.” Located across the Severn River and adjacent to the Naval Academy Golf Course, the 150,000-square foot facility was privately funded and built at a cost of $18.5 million. In addition to the tennis wing of the complex, it also includes hockey and rugby venues, an indoor hitting, chipping and putting facility for the golf team and club members, a fitness center, a restaurant, the pro shop for the golf course, athletic training rooms, numerous locker rooms for all of the Navy and visiting teams, office space for the various coaches and meeting rooms for each of the programs. p Bill (‘61) and Sandra Moore with Chet Gladchuk, Director of Athletics, at the outdoor court dedication on Sept. 25, 2009.

The Naval Academy Athletic Association dedicated the Dyer Tennis Clubhouse in ceremonies held in November of 2000. The facility is named to honor the late Vice Admiral George Dyer (Academy Class of 1919) by his daughter and her husband, Jo and Weston Burnett. Mr. Burnett is also an Academy graduate (‘43) and retired with the rank of Commander. The Burnett’s are longtime supporters of the Navy tennis program. “This is a suitable facility for not only an excellent tennis team, but also a proper way to honor Vice Admiral George Dyer,” said Mr. Burnett. “He was well known throughout Annapolis for his charitable works, and this will only add to his legacy.” The building includes coaches offices, a racquet stringing room, locker rooms for both coaches and players, a lounge, a public address system and a viewing deck overlooking the courts. “We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Burnetts to the Navy tennis program,” said then-Director of Athletics, Jack Lengyel. “The Dyer Tennis Clubhouse will only help to enhance and strengthen an already highly successful program.” “We are very grateful to the Dyer family for their contribution to the Navy tennis program,” said longtime Navy head coach John Officer. “The Dyer Tennis Clubhouse is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation. It is a wonderful building the team will be able to enjoy for many years to come.” Navy also boasts six outdoor courts adjacent to the 8th Wing of Bancroft Hall.

The U.S. Naval Academy formally dedicated one of its tennis courts as Joe Hunt Court during a ceremony held on Sept. 27, 2015, as part of the final day of competition at the inaugural Joe Hunt Invitational. Hunt is considered one of the top athletes in USNA history. After winning the intercollegiate (NCAA) national title in doubles as a freshman at USC (1938), Hunt transferred to the Naval Academy where he would win the 1942 intercollegiate national singles championship during his senior year. Additionally, Hunt competed for the U.S. at the 1939 Davis Cup and was presented with a game ball following his efforts in helping the Mids win the 1940 Army-Navy football game. Hunt’s prowess on the tennis court continued after he graduated and was on active duty as a pilot in the Navy. He used leave time from the service to enter the 1943 USTA National Championship, the precursor to the U.S. Open. Previously a quarterfinalist (1937, ‘38) and semifinalist (1939, ‘40) at the tournament, Hunt won the championship that year to become both the No. 1 ranked player in the U.S. and the fifth-ranked player in the world. He remains the lone player in the sport’s history to have won U.S. boys (ages 15 and under), juniors (18 and under), collegiate and national / U.S. Open titles in singles. Lt. Hunt lost his life in a training accident off the Florida coast in 1945, months before the end of World War II and weeks prior to his 26th birthday. He was posthumously inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1966. A plaque dedicated to Hunt was unveiled at the entrance to the tennis court located just inside Gate 1 at the USNA. In addition to listing Hunt’s accolades and designating the court as Joe Hunt Court, it also includes the following testimonial to him: “This court is dedicated to the memory and service of the most accomplished tennis player in U.S. Naval Academy history.”
