2018-19 NAVY men's golf PAT OWEN | HEAD COACH • • • • • •

1993-95-97-98-04-08-09-12-18 Patriot League Coach of the Year 1996 NCAA District II Coach of the Year 7 NCAA Tournament Appearances 7 Patriot League Team Titles 7 Patriot League Individual Champions 2009 Labron Harris Sr. Award Winner

One of the most respected coaches in the sport today, nine-time Patriot League Coach of the Year Pat Owen is in his 29th season as the head coach of the Navy golf program. In 2009, Owen was named the winner of the Labron Harris Sr. Award presented by E-Z-GO in cooperation with The PGA of America and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Harris Award is presented to the college or high school coach and PGA Professional whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the continued growth of the game and who represents the finest qualities the game has to offer. “Pat Owen is not only an outstanding PGA Professional, but also a truly great leader, mentor and role model to the Naval Academy’s Midshipmen ... golfer and non-golfer alike,” said Col. Dick Johns, USA (Ret.), Executive Director of the Middle Atlantic Section PGA. “Knowing that he is so deserving of this recognition, the entire Middle Atlantic PGA ‘family’ is extremely proud of Pat!” Owen follows in the footsteps of past Labron Harris Award recipients Jay Hardwick (Virginia Tech), Devon Brouse (Purdue), the late Rod Myers (Duke), Herb Page (Kent State) and Jim Brown (Ohio State). In February of 2010, Owen was invited to appear before the Maryland General Assembly where he was presented proclamations from Speaker of the House of Delegates Mike Busch along with Retired Marine Corps Colonel Senator John Astle, lauding him for his efforts in earning the national award and serving as both a teacher and role model to the thousands of Midshipmen who pass through the Academy. During his tenure at the Academy, Owen has garnered Patriot League Coachof-the-Year honors nine times (1993, ‘95, ‘97, ‘98, ‘04, ‘08, ‘09, ‘12 and ‘18), including in the spring of 2018 when he guided the Midshipmen to their seventh Patriot League Tournament title since 1998. In addition to his Patriot League laurels, he earned NCAA District II Coach-of-the-Year recognition in 1996. Owen has led the Midshipmen to seven NCAA Regional appearances, including their 2018 NCAA Championship berth at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. In the spring of 1998, he guided the Mids to a fifth-place finish at the Eastern Championship and their first NCAA Regional appearance. Anchored by one of the most successful golfers in the program’s history in All-American Aaron Wright, Navy finished 19th at the East Regional held at Melrose Golf Course in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Just three years after Wright’s graduation from the Academy, Owen landed

a recruit who would go on to be one of the top young amateur players in the country and lead the Mids to a pair of NCAA Regional appearances. Billy Hurley, a member of the 2005 Walker Cup team, came to the Academy during the 200001 academic year and quickly made a name for himself. But it wasn’t until the summer of 2003 that he gained national attention, where he battled to the No. 2 seed in the U.S. Amateur. A four-time All-Patriot League selection and the 2004 Patriot League MVP, Hurley became the first golfer to receive the Academy’s Thompson Trophy Cup, presented to that midshipman who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy. The recipient of the 2004 Byron Nelson Award, he was one of the first two players to be named to the 2004 Palmer Cup and became the first player to represent a service academy in the annual Ryder Cup-style competition. In addition, he was voted to serve as captain by his peers. Hurley was named an Academic All-American, in addition to being named the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the year following his senior campaign. Hurley earned his tour card for the 2012 PGA Tour by finishing 25th on the 2011 Nationwide Tour money list. He won his first PGA Tournament on June 26, 2016, at the Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, Md. Eight Navy players have won the Patriot League individual crown since 1997, including Charlie Musto (‘21) who paced the field with his 2-under par, 214 at the Saucon Valley Golf Club in the Lehigh Valley last spring. Additionally, Navy has had five players earn Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Year accolades in the last 12 years. Charlie Musto (‘21) is just the second golfer overall and first from Navy to earn Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season when he claimed the 2018 crown by six strokes. David Hall (‘14) put together a near flawless performance at the 2011 championship which earned him a second-place finish and Patriot League Rookie of the Year recognition. Prior to being named head coach at Navy in 1991, Owen served as an assistant coach for the Midshipmen for four years. Outside of his golfing duties, Owen has served as a board member of the Annapolis Touchdown Club since 2004 and accepted the position of treasurer in 2008. The club promotes youth sports in the greater Annapolis area and helps to provide opportunities for young people to compete in athletics. Owen is a 1981 graduate of Johns Hopkins, where he served as captain of the golf team his senior year. After turning pro, Owen earned national recognition with the highest score on the PGA of America’s Business School exam. In addition to his coaching duties, Owen is the golf pro at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. Owen and his wife, Karen, are the parents of a son, Patrick, and daughter, Noelle, and reside in Annapolis.

MIKE BURKE | ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Entering his 11th season as a member of the Navy men’s golf coaching staff and his seventh as Associate Head Coach is Mike Burke. Burke was promoted prior to the beginning of the spring competition season in 2013. A native of Cape May Court House, N.J., Burke arrived in Annapolis in the spring of 2007 as a member of the Academy’s Golf Professional Staff. A PGA Class “A” Professional since 2007, he joined the Mids’ coaching staff in the spring of 2008 where he has served as a volunteer assistant

for Pat Owen. Since his arrival, Navy has won the Patriot League Championship (2008, ‘12, ‘18) three times and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, while the Mids have also placed second three times (2009, ‘11, ‘13) during that time frame. Sixteen different Midshipmen have garnered All-Patriot League honors,

2

including Erich Schoen, who earned Patriot League Player-of-the-Year accolades after taking the individual tournament crown in Burke’s first season (2008), Chris House, who took the title in 2013 and earned an automatic berth to play in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, and Charlie Musto (‘21), who is just the second golfer overall and first from Navy to earn Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season when he claimed the 2018 crown by six strokes. Additionally, Navy has produced the league’s rookie of the year four times under his tutelage (2008 Ben Hayes, 2009 Peter Reilly, 2011 David Hall, 2018 Charlie Musto). Prior to his arrival at the Academy, Burke served internships at the Brentwood (Calif.) Country Club, the Seaview Marriott (N.J.), the Air Force Academy (Colo.) and Bandon Dunes (Ore.). A proven master of the links, Burke passed the PGA Playing Ability Test on his first attempt. Burke is a 2006 graduate of Clemson University, earning his bachelors degree in Professional Golf Management.

2018-19 NAVY men's golf PATRIOT LEAGUE H Navy swept the men’s and women’s President’s Cup Titles, the 11th time the feat has been accomplished since 1990-91 and the first since Bucknell achieved the honor in 2010-11.

H Navy and Loyola Maryland both qualified for the 2018 NCAA Women’s

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army West Point, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2017-18 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

H 99 Patriot League teams (47.0 percent of League teams) earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with a Patriot League record 90 squads earning perfect scores.

H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, and tied for the national lead with the Ivy League for the highest percentage of teams earning the honor at 47.0 percent.

H The League’s 95 percent graduation success rate (GSR) is the second-

best mark in the nation, finishing in the top-two in each year since the rating has been released in 2013. All 10 member schools were at 90 percent or higher, each exceeding the record-high national GSR of 87 percent. In addition the League’s 84 percent Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) places it as the national leader for the fifth-consecutive year.

H Nine student-athletes earned Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-

America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Megan Hagerty (Women’s Soccer) and Stephen Born (Baseball), Army West Point’s Kenneth Brinson (Football) and Matt Ball (Baseball). Second team honorees include Navy’s Sydney Fortson (Women’s Soccer) and third team recipients include Bucknell’s Kendall Ham (Women’s Soccer), Navy’s Patricia Mattingly (Volleyball), Bucknell’s Jeff Gottesman (Baseball), Lehigh’s Conor Gaffney (Men’s Lacrosse).

H 30 Patriot League student-athletes received Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.

H There were a Patriot League record 3,011 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2017-18.

H Navy’s Stephen Born (Baseball) and Shawn Anderson (Men’s Basketball)

Lacrosse Championships, marking the first time the League received two bids to the tournament. The Mids and Greyhounds both won their firstround matchups, with Navy advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to defending national champion No. 1 Maryland.

H Also winning NCAA Tournament contests in 2017-18 were Colgate

men’s soccer, Boston University field hockey, Army West Point baseball, combining with Navy and Loyola Maryland women’s lacrosse for seven tournament victories.

H 24 Patriot Leaguers were All-America selections, with first-team status for Lehigh’s Dom Bragalone (Football), Boston University’s Ally Hammel (Field Hockey), Loyola Maryland’s Pat Spencer and Foster Huggins (Men’s Lacrosse) and Navy’s Jenna Collins (Women’s Lacrosse).
