Steve Cooksey is no stranger to success.

In his two-plus decades at the helm of the Navy men's track and field program, the former All-American high jumper and four-time Patriot League Coach of the Year has guided 11 Midshipmen to a total of 18 All-America honors, with Class of 2008 graduate Paul Harris earning the most recent distinction with a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championship. Under his watch, Navy has compiled an overall dual meet record of 278-41 (.871), while earning four Patriot League team titles and a total of 146 individual league crowns. His teams have registered at least 10 combined victories 16 times and in 17 of 21 years as the Midshipmen's top mentor. Moreover, since the start of the 199899 season, he has led Navy to a stellar 167-19 (.898) record. Cooksey directed the Mids to the program's first sweep of the indoor and outdoor Patriot League titles in 2007-08. For his efforts, Cooksey garnered the league's coach-of-the-year accolades during both seasons and was named USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Indoor Coach of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor season. The Midshipmen have won three Patriot League Indoor Championships (2004, 2005, 2008) in recent years with Cooksey at the helm. Additionally, Navy won the Heptagonal outdoor competition three-straight years from 1991-93 and posted back-to-back wins in the Heptagonal indoor championship in 1992 and ‘93. The team also captured the Colonial Athletic Association outdoor crown during the 1991 season. Cooksey's success has also carried over into Navy's Star Meet competitions against archrival Army, where his teams own a 26-18 career mark against the Black Knights. Over the last 12 years, the Mids have won 18of-26 dual meet competitions against Army, including seven indoor and outdoor season sweeps. Cooksey came to Annapolis in 1984 and assisted Al Cantello with both the cross country and the track & field teams at Navy for four seasons before taking over the reins of Navy’s track program. Before coming to Navy, Cooksey spent six years as the head cross country and track & field coach at Ball State, where he began as an assistant in 1974. He was acting head cross country coach for the Cardinals in the 1978-79 season and became the head coach of the

cross country and track & field teams in 1979. During his time at Ball State, Cooksey worked with 18 NCAA qualifiers, three All-Americans and an NCAA champion. In 1998, he was named the head coach for the United States World Junior Championship team and has served as a coach on several other U.S. National teams. Most recently, Cooksey served as the head coach of the 2008 U.S. World Indoor Championship team. An associate professor in the physical education department at the Academy, Cooksey was named the recipient of the 2003 Superintendent’s Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for teaching and coaching. His road to becoming one of the top collegiate track coaches began in Terre Haute, Ind., where he was a nationally-ranked high-jumper, two-time captain and team MVP for the Indiana State track program. Cooksey enjoyed a decorated athletic career for the Sycamores, collecting an impressive list of individual accolades, including U.S. Track &Field Federation AllAmerica and NCAA All-America honors. Cooksey and his wife, Valerie, have one daughter, Brooke, and reside in Annapolis, Md.

A mainstay with the men’s track & field program, Al Cantello enters his 48th year of coaching at the Navy as the top assistant and primary distance coach. In 2010, Cantello was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross County Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He led the 2009 Navy cross country team to a Patriot League Championship and four distance runners earned All-East honors at the IC4A Indoor Championships. Cantello also remains the guiding force for the Navy men's cross country program, which he has helped mold into one of the most consistent teams nationally since being named head coach 42 years ago. Navy has currently won three-straight Patriot League Cross Country Championships (2008-10) and Cantello has been named the league coach of the year each of the past three seasons. With an all-time record of 239-69-1 (.775), Cantello has coached several standout runners during his tenure in Annapolis. Jon Clemens received All-America honors during the 1996 cross country season, while John Mentzer was named a 1997 All-American in both the 5,000m and 10,000m. Michael Ryan earned similar honors in 1999 for his 4:01.57 time in the mile, and Erik Schmidt took fifth in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March of 2003. In addition, two of Navy's distance relay teams were ranked among the nation's top 15 during the 1999 outdoor campaign. The mile relay team of Eric Adams, John McNamara, Ryan Runge and Ryan was fourth in the nation, while the distance medley relay squad of Adams, Torrance Chaplin, Karlton Holston and Ryan was nationally ranked, as well. As a result of his team’s successes, Cantello has been amply recognized, including being named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year three times (1984, '85 and '92). In 1997, the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Cantello the Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for a coach or faculty member who did the most for the physical development of the Midshipmen in physical education. Cantello also received the inaugural Tom Hamilton Teaching/ Coaching Award, as voted by his peers that same year. Additionally, this past spring Cantello, one of only two threetime winners of the javelin throw in the Penn Relays, was among the 16th group of inductees to the Penn Relays Wall Of Fame. From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, guiding Navy's men's indoor and outdoor track squads while maintaining his cross country duties. Cantello owns a stellar .797 all-time winning percentage with over 300 victories as a head coach in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. Among his coaching triumphs are 41 N-Stars, including 30 in cross country – the most by a Navy coach in one sport. A 1955 graduate of La Salle, Cantello was a two-time All-American in the javelin. He was enshrined as a charter member of La Salle's Hall of Athletes in 1961. A former world-class competitor in the javelin, Cantello once held every national and international record in the event. In 1959, he set a world record in the javelin and competed for the U.S. Olympic Team the following year in the 1960 Games in Rome. In 1964, Sport Magazine named Cantello to its all-time track & field team and voted him the world's greatest javelin competitor. Cantello and his wife, Jackie, are the parents of three adult children - Karla McMahon, Karen O'Kane and the late Albert Jr. - and seven grandchildren.

Chris Campbell, a 1989 Academy graduate, is entering his fourth season as an assistant and the primary throws coach at Navy. Campbell has made an immediate impact working with the team's contingent of throwers. In both 2008 and 2009, Navy throwers have earned FieldAthlete-of-the-Meet honors at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, most recently with team captain and Academic All-American Mark Van Orden sweeping the conference's hammer and weight throw titles to earn the distinction in 2009. Van Orden won two league titles as a senior and was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team. Campbell, himself, was a four-year letterwinner on the Midshipmen track & field team. A javelin thrower and former school record holder, he was elected team captain his senior year. Upon graduation, Campbell was assigned to the San Diego-based naval warship, USS COPELAND, which completed CARAT operations during Desert Storm and counter-narcotic operations off the coast of Central America in 1993. Campbell completed his military obligation as an Operations Officer at Naval Station Annapolis and achieved the rank of Lieutenant before resigning from the Navy in 1995. While completing his military obligation, he served as a volunteer coach at Navy while completing an M.S. in Education at Johns Hopkins University. Campbell's second coaching stop came at Ball State University, where he served as field events coach for the Cardinals program from 1996-99. During his tenure, Campbell directed student-athletes to NCAA qualifying marks in the hammer throw and high jump, four school records, and a Mid-American Conference hammer throw championship. In addition, he helped lead the 1998 Ball State women's squad to both the Indoor and Outdoor MAC team titles. Following his three-year stint at Ball State, Campbell spent six seasons at Fresno State, including two as the associate head coach. There he mentored All-Americans in the decathlon, javelin and shot put, while helping the women's team to the 2005 California-Nevada Coaches Association Team Championship, and the Bulldog men to the same title in 2000. The women's squad also captured the WAC title in 2002, its first conference championship in 10 years. Campbell also held the role of recruiting coordinator while at Fresno State, inking several blue-chip athletes, including the nation's top-ranked high school javelin thrower in 2003. Additionally, he served as Vice President of the California-Nevada Coaches Association and as Men's and Women's Development Chairperson for the Central Valley Chapter of USA Track and Field. While there, he also completed a Master of Arts in Kinesiology in 2003. Prior to Navy, Campbell served as an assistant for the combined men's and women's program at Michigan State. Working primarily with the throwers and multievent athletes, he tutored nine Spartans to 16 scoring positions at the Big Ten Championships, four NCAA regional qualifying marks, a pair of NCAA provisional marks in the women's pentathlon and heptathlon, and four school records. In addition to his coaching duties, Campbell served as assistant meet director for the 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships and directed the 30-team Spartan Invitational. During his more than a decade of collegiate coaching experience, Campbell has mentored a total of three NCAA All-Americans, seven junior national All-Americans, 30 NCAA regional and championships qualifiers, nine conference champions, and four Olympic Trials participants. Campbell has also completed USATF Coaching Education Schools through Level III and has been a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist since 1996. Campbell and his wife, Julie, reside in Annapolis.

Season Outlook

The 2010-11 Navy men’s track and field team returns three NCAA East Region qualifiers and nine IC4A All-East performers to a squad that placed third at both the Patriot League Indoor and Outdoor Championships a year ago. Longtime head coach Steve Cooksey is back for his 27th season and has his team ready for another successful campaign and will build upon a combined 9-3 dual record a year ago. “We've got a chance to move up from where we've been the last couple of years,” said Cooksey. “By being focused the entire year and doing the work; we will see it pay off later. If we can get the kids to train, we have enough to move us up from where we've been.” Navy is poised to have a very strong mid-distance unit, which will be led by senior Andrew Hanko, one of the most accomplished mid-distance runners in Navy history. The cross country team won its third straight Patriot League title during the 2010 fall season. “The cross country team has set the tone and we want to keep everyone focused on what they just did: win the Patriot League, beat Army, go beyond the regular season. They have given us a great springboard to the season.”

Rome was an NCAA East Regional Qualifier and IC4A AllEast performer in the 1,500 a year ago. He also won the 1,000 at the indoor league championship. Rome is the team’s top returner in the 1,500 and the mile. Junior Dominac Della Pelle recorded Navy’s top 1,000 time a year ago and will join Hanko and Rome as one of Navy’s fastest runners in the 1,500, mile and 3,000. Junior Jeremy Haney is also back after placing eighth in the 1,000 at the IC4A Indoor Championships last season. Senior Matthew De Villers will bring experience to Navy’s distance group in the mile, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000. “We went 1-2-3 (Hanko, Rome, Della Pelle) in the 1,500 in the Patriot League last season and they are all back. If we put all three runners in the mile this year, we expect to go well under 4:05 and Hanko would be the flag-bearer.” Sophomore Dean Black returns after an outstanding rookie campaign. Black excelled in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, winning the outdoor Star Meet against Army, the Patriot League Championship and also placed 10th at the IC4A meet, just missing All-East honors. Black was named the 2010 Patriot League Outdoor Championship Rookie of the Meet.

Following a third-straight cross country league championship, Navy’s distance unit is poised to once again make a strong scoring impact. The star of Navy’s distance unit is Hanko. After doubling in the 3,000 and the 5,000 at the indoor league meet, Hanko was named the Patriot League Track-Athlete of the Meet and he won the individual titles at the past two Patriot League Cross Country Championships. Hanko enters the track season in top shape and is coming off an appearance in the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championship. Hanko is Navy’s top returner in the 3,000 and 5,000 and will also score in the 1,500 and mile. “We're coming off a pretty good fall and we achieved most of our goals,” said assistant coach Al Cantello. “We have solid milers – and they can go up or down and run different events – so it gives us some range. All of our runners have range from the 1,000 to mile and 3,000. We should fair well in our league in distances and mid-

Senior and team captain David Ash will be one of the team’s top scorers in the 400, 500 and 800. Ash earned IC4A All-East and All-Patriot League Second Team honors as a member of the 4x800 relay team in 2010. He was also a member of the Patriot League-winning distance medley relay team. “Between our distance guys moving down to 800 and our long sprints guys moving up to 800, I think we have that event covered pretty well and we have some real depth in that event,” said Cooksey. “There could be six people who are 1:52 or better.” The duo of junior Alexander Jackson and sophomore Travis Fanning will serve as Navy’s top returners in the 200 and 400. Jackson scored in the 400 at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in the 400. Fanning boasts the team’s second-best times in the 200 and 400, behind Jackson. Junior Matthew Evers joins Jackson and Fanning to give Navy three returnees with sub-50.00 times in the 400. Evers currently has the best time on the team in the 500 and will also be a contributor in the 800. Junior Isaac Teichgrab is the squad’s top returnee in the shorter sprints and will lead Navy’s efforts in the 60 and the 100. A talented freshmen class will also compete immediately in the sprints. Brett Bogaard was the Iowa State Champion in the 100 and Wynton El claimed the New Mexico State Championship in the 60. Freshmen Blake Bowell and Robert Andon will also contribute to the sprints. “Overall in the short sprint, I think we are ahead of where we were last year,” said Cooksey. “I think we have enough to build on and we have some hopeful optimism of where we can go with that group. We have four or five young sprinters who we think can be very good.” Sophomore Mitch Simmonds will lead Navy in the 60m and 100m hurdles. Simmonds placed seventh in both events at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships as a freshman and should be counted on to score in both events in his sophomore year. “Simmonds is a very good hurdler,” said Cooksey. “From the way the fall is going, he is looking like a person who should place at the Patriot League. He will be one

that we are counting on week in and week out in the hurdles.” The Midshipmen return a strong contingent in the relay area. Ash, Evers, Della Pelle and junior George Stevenson are all back from a 4x800 relay team that placed third at the IC4A Indoor Championship last season to earn All-East honors. “We should do very well in the 4x800 and the 4x400,” said Cooksey. “I think we have enough talent in those two relays to run fairly well. I think we could at least place in the conference, and could be at the top of it and also qualify for the IC4As.” Additionally, Ash, Della Pelle, Stevenson and senior Aaron Foote are all back and set to defend their distance medley relay title from last season’s indoor league meet.

The throwing unit will have to move ahead without standout and 2010 graduate Mark Van Orden. Van Orden was a staple of the Navy track and field program, earning a pair of Academic All-American honors while also racking up IC4A All-East accolades in the hammer and weight throws. Junior Christopher Ricks is Navy’s top returner in the weight throw, hammer and javelin. Ricks qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the javelin a year ago and had top-four finishes in the javelin and weight throw at the Patriot League Championships. Junior Chris Boniwell will lead Navy’s efforts in the shot put and discuss. Boniwell had a strong indoor season in 2010, placing third in the shot put at the league meet and winning the event at the Wesley Brown Invitational. Boniwell also recorded Navy’s top discus toss (161’6”) in 2010. Sophomore Miles Snelgrove will be a key contributor in the javelin in the outdoor season. “I have high hopes for Miles in the javelin,” said assistant coach Chris Campbell. “He has thrown farther this fall then he did last year. “Ricks, Boniwell and Snelgrove are going to be our three big throwers in the outdoor season,” said Campbell. Seniors Patrick Norwood and Nicholas Porter will provide strong depth to the throwing unit. Each will compete in the weight, discus and hammer throws and have placed in the Patriot League Championship. “Porter and Norwood should gobble up some points in the indoor season,” said Campbell. Freshmen Zachary Duncavage and Kyle Fortney will also be contributors to the throwing squad. “Duncavage has thrown well in the weight throw and the hammer throw so far this season and Fortney has been second in the discuss so far.”

The Mids will open the indoor season with the home Navy Invitational on Dec. 4 at the Wesley A. Brown Fieldhouse. The Navy Invitational will have a large field, as 12 teams are set to compete. Navy will then be off until after Christmas and will then begin a four-week home stand in January. Navy will welcome in Princeton on Jan. 8, host a six-team meet Jan. 15, a fourteam meet Jan. 22 and then the Wesley A. Brown Invitational on Jan. 29. Navy will host six teams at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational, including North Carolina and Maryland. Navy will play take on Army in the indoor Star Meet on Feb. 5 in West Point. One of the highlights of the indoor schedule will come when Navy hosts the three-day Patriot League Indoor Championships Feb 18-20. The Mids placed third at the indoor league meet last year. “It’s great to be able to host the Patriot League Championship,” said Cooksey. “They will have their friends come watch the meet, they will be comfortable with the facility, you're not traveling. All of those things are pluses for having that event here. We have a lot of competition on our track, so getting them ready for that event with all of our meets gets them more familiar with the facility, especially with the amount of young kids that we have.” Navy will begin the outdoor season at the Pt. Loma Invite in San Diego, Calif. March 19. The Mids will then return home for three straight home meets. The Mids will host duals on March 26 and April 2, before the outdoor Star Meet on April 8. Two weeks later on April 23, the program will hold the Navy Twilight at 7 pm under the lights at Ingram Field. Navy will compete in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia from April 28-30. Lafayette will host the Patriot League Outdoor Championships from March 6-7. Navy placed third at the outdoor league meet last season. The indoor IC4A Championships will be March 5-6 in Boston and the outdoor meet will be May 13-15 in Princeton, N.J.

Junior multi-eventer Br ian Zitterkopf will lead Navy in the heptathlon and decathlon once again this season, and he is also one of Navy’s top performers in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Zitterkopf claimed a fifth-place heptathlon finish at the Patriot League Championship in 2010 and also placed 12th in the high jump at the IC4A indoor meet. Junior Joshua Houston placed seventh in the high jump at the IC4A Outdoor Championship in 2010 to earn All-East honors. Houston’s personal-best in the high jump is 6’8¼”. “We are fairly solid in the high jump and we have a good chance of scoring in that meet at the Patriot League Championship,” said Cooksey. “We've got two solid kids for scoring purposes week in and week out with Zitterkopf and Houston.” Juniors Nathan Woodason and Paul Neidhardt are Navy’s top returning pole vaulters. Woodason enters the season as the top ranked vaulter, clearing a teambest 15’7” last season. Newcomer Ryan Kochert will also aid Navy’s efforts in the event. “We have three good pole vaulters in Neidhardt, Woodason and Kochert and they should be able to give us a scoring lift in the event,” said Cooksey. Sophomore Miles Snelgrove will once again pace Navy in the long jump. Snelgrove was outstanding against Army as a freshman last season, winning the long jump at the indoor Star Meet and placing second in the event at the outdoor dual against the Black Knights.

Q&A with David Ash What was your reaction to being voted team captain? First of all, it was an honor and a privilege to have been selected as team captain. I was extremely excited to find out that I would be leading Navy’s Track and Field team. The Navy Track Team has come back from the 2009-2010 season with fresh recruits in some of our weaker event areas, and our veteran athletes have returned this season with a level of dedication and commitment that I simply have not seen in the past three years I have been an athlete at Navy. As a team captain, I knew that I would have the leverage and the support to make crucial changes to the team’s dynamics and the team’s attitude that has been lacking in the past - changes that would ultimately lead to the team’s success and to the achievement of our team’s goals. What are your team and individual goals this season? Our number one focus this year is and always has been victory over Army, both in our indoor and outdoor seasons. Once complete, our focus shifts to winning the Patriot League Championship meet, and finally, winning the IC4A meet. My priority this season is firstand-foremost ensuring that I do the best job I can as the team’s captain by ensuring the team is prepared to Beat Army and have success in our later meets mentioned above. But as far as the clock is concerned, I would like to set another school record in the 4x800m relay, and would also like to break 1:50 in the 800m – every 800m runner’s goal, if you ask me. What is your favorite aspect about being a midshipman? I could not surround myself with a better group of people on a day-to-day basis. I have met some of the most influential people, war-heroes really, that I have ever known, all at this school. As a midshipman, I’m “in the club” with these types of people. For example, my own company officer was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his actions in saving numerous lives in Iraq as a tank commander. This man is the same person that tells me to clean my “dang” room and put my underwear in the laundry hamper. You really live and breathe this stuff, and though at times it's an inconvenient privilege, at the end of the day, there is nowhere else I would rather be. Why did you choose the Naval Academy? I chose to attend the Naval Academy for two reasons. The first is for the reason above, and the second is that I would rather fly an airplane than go on a date with a girl. The Navy/Marine Corps, in my humble and un-biased opinion, has the best pilots in the world, and I would like to someday be one of them. What are you hoping for a service assignment and what are your post-graduation plans? I’m hoping to be selected for Navy Pilot. As far as post-graduation plans: I have a dreamy goal and a “realistic” goal. My dreamy career path would land me with a job working for NASA as an astronaut. In my “realistic” career (plan B), I would like to start a small flight school, give free flights to children, and make my living as a flight instructor.

Paced by its throwers and mid-distance runners, the Navy men’s track and field team produced yet another successful season in 2009-10. Senior Mark Van Orden earned a pair of ECAC AllEast honors by placing second in the hammer throw and third in the weight throw and also named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team. Van Orden, who also earned AllAmerica academic honors in 2009, becomes the first men’s track and field athlete to earn multiple national academic honors. Junior Andrew Hanko and sophomore Cody Rome were impressive in leading the middistance crew. Hanko and Rome each earned ECAC AllEast honors and Hanko was a double-winner at both the Patriot League Indoor (3,000 and 5,000) and Outdoor (1,500 and 5,000) Championships. Hanko was named the Patriot League Championship TrackAthlete of the Meet for his performance at the outdoor league meet. Rome won the 1,000 at the indoor league meet and also placed second in the mile (indoor) and the 1,500 (outdoor). Navy placed third at both the league indoor and outdoor meets. The Midshipmen also placed 14th at the IC4A Championship, the highest of any Patriot League school.

Built facing the scenic Severn River, the Wesley A. Brown Field House is a 140,000-square-foot multi-function athletic facility that serves as the home for the Naval Academy’s men's track & field program. The facility boasts a unique combination of a 76,000square-foot retractable Magic Carpet Astroturf system and a Mondo track surface with hydraulically controlled banked curves. The 200-meter hydraulic banked track is one of only four of its kind in the United States. It also features dual pole vault/jumping runways and throwing areas. State-of-the-art weight training and sports medicine facilities, as well as equipment storage areas round out this newest crown jewel to the Navy athletics arsenal. The facility is named after Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown, USN (ret.), the first African American midshipman to graduate from the Naval Academy in 1949.

WESLEY ANTHONY BROWN Lieutenant Commander Wesley A. Brown, CEC, USN, (Ret.), was born April 3, 1927 in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., where he was Cadet Corps Regimental Commander during his senior year. Lt. Cmdr. Brown is the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. Nominated for admission by New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Brown entered the Academy in 1945 and graduated in June of 1949. Lt. Cmdr. Brown, a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retired in June 1969 after serving 20 years in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. He holds the Navy Commendation Medal, World War II and Korean War Victory, Korean Service, and American Theater and Antarctic Service Ribbons. Brown and his wife, Crystal, have four children and seven grandchildren.

"Wesley Brown (above right) represents the service as well as anybody that put on the uniform. What a heroic step, what a courageous move, and what a lasting contribution he made. . . . I think it is appropriate that this field house is named after an individual who has fought a war all his life to improve the Navy and the nation." Adm. Michael G. The all-weather MONDO track located northeast of Michelson Hall and Chauvenet Hall is the site of Navy's outdoor track and field meets.

Considered to be one of the premier facilities in the United States, it is named in honor of Vice Admiral Jonas H. Ingram, who commanded the U.S. South Atlantic Fleet during World War II. He was also the Naval Academy Director of Athletics from 1925-1930. The track underwent a $1.7 million renovation in the fall of 2001, with new all-weather surfacing placed on the quarter-mile oval and jump areas. The field area boasts six shot put circles, a discus-throwing circle and a javelin throwing area in the middle of the track. The field has four long/triple jump pits and a “D” zone that allows two high jump areas to be used concurrently.

The facility is also equipped with lights and Navy regularly holds 'twilight' meets at the facility. Additionally, the facility also features a Daktronics scoreboard, which displays current times and marks during meets.

As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers.

Founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in 1933. Today, the Academy offers 18 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities. USNA MISSION STATEMENT “To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future deployment in mind and character to assume the highest responsiblities of command, citizenship and government.”

From the first athletic competition played on the gridiron in 1879 to Navy's recent triumphs, several events, people, rivalries and personalities have shaped the entire Naval Academy athletic program. Below is a look at just some of the history and traditions that make Navy one of the most storied programs in all of collegiate athletics.

ANCHORS AWEIGH "Anchors Aweigh" was written by Lt. Charles Zimmermann, Musical Director of the Naval Academy in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles of the Class of 1906, as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class instead of the usual class march Zimmermann had composed for previous classes. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game, and when the Midshipmen won the game, the song became traditional at this game. It gained national exposure in the 1920s and 1930s when it was heard on the radio and was in a number of popular movies. In 1997 a one-hour documentary on the history of Navy football, titled "Anchors Aweigh for Honor and Glory", was produced by NFL Films. The film was deemed a success by both critics and fans alike. Here are the words: Stand Navy down the field, Sails set to the sky, We'll never change our course, So Army you steer shy. Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh, Sail Navy down the field, And sink the Army, Sink the Army Grey

BILL THE GOAT The first recorded use of a goat mascot for Navy athletic teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (The Chief) was turned over to the Brigade by young officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 triumph over Army that year. Two cats, a dog, and a carrier pigeon have also enjoyed brief reigns as the Navy mascot, but goats have served without interruption since 1904. Bill XXXII and XXXIII and XXXIV are the current mascots. They are taken care of by 15 goathandlers made up of five midshipmen from the first, second and third classes. The goathandlers undergo rigorous training prior to handling Bill on the field. BLUE & GOLD This song was written in 1923 by Cmdr. Roy DeS. Horn, USN (Ret.) with music composed by J.W. Crosley. Following every home athletic competition, the team faces its fans with their hands on their heart and sings the following notes:-

The Blue Angels perform an air show along the Severn River on the northern bank of the Academy each spring during Commissioning Week.

Now, colleges from sea to sea May sing of colors true; But who has better right than we To hoist a symbol hue? For sailors brave in battle fair, Since fighting days of old, Have proved the sailor's right to wear The Navy Blue and Gold

The Navy football team gathered for the traditional singing of the Blue & Gold following its win over Air Force in 2009, its seventh-consecutive win over its rival. Below: The men’s lacrosse team sang an emotional rendition of Blue & Gold following its overtime victory over rival Johns Hopkins in 2010.

MIDSHIPMAN The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed "amidships," i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, however, the second 's' had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the sailor's trade.

In the early days of the American Navy, midshipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life. The name of students at the Naval Academy changed several times between 1870 and 1902, when Congress restored the original title of Midshipman, and it has remained unchanged since.

TECUMSEH The familiar Native American figurehead facing Bancroft Hall and Tecumseh Court has been an Annapolis resident since 1866. Originally, the figurehead of the USS Delaware was meant to portray Tamanend, the great chief of the Delawares. It developed that Tamanend was a lover of peace and did not strike the fancy of the Brigade. Looking for another name, Midshipmen referred to the figurehead as Powhatan and King Philip before finally settling on Tecumseh, the fierce Shawnee chieftain who lived from 1768-1813. The original wooden statue was replaced after some 50 years in the open weather by a durable bronze replica, presented by the Class of 1891. It is considered a good-luck "mascot" for the midshipmen, who in times past would throw pennies at it and offer left-handed salutes whenever they wanted a 'favor', such as a sports win over West Point, or spiritual help for examinations. These days it receives a fresh coat of war paint and is often decorated in various themes during football weeks and other special occasions such as Commissioning Week.

ENTERPRISE BELL From the bridge of the famed World War II aircraft carrier, it has been a part of the Naval Academy tradition since 1950. The late Admiral Harry W. Hill, then Superintendent, was instrumental in bringing the "E" Bell to Annapolis. It rings when the Academy observes Morning Colors and also during special ceremonies when Navy scores a majority of victories over Army in any one of the three sports seasons. The bell also rings during Commissioning Week for those teams that beat Army and have not participated in a previous bell-ringing during the academic year. The bell is stationed in front of Bancroft Hall.

Now in his 10th year as Director of Athletics, Chet Gladchuk has overseen a renaissance of the Naval Academy athletic program. His administrative leadership has helped lead the program to one of the most successful periods in school history. The 2009-10 season was a successful one for the Midshipmen as Navy won 63 percent of its contests, defeated Army in the star competition for the 13th consecutive year and won the overall series against Army for the 17th time in the last 18 years. Navy produced 14 All-Americans, 13 conference athletes of the year, seven conference coaches of the year and seven conference championships. Navy also excelled in the classroom in 200910, ranking No. 2 in the country in graduation rate for student-athletes (among Football Bowl Subdivision schools) and all 24 of Navy’s NCAA sponsored varsity sports rank above the national average in the Academic Progress report, including five teams with perfect scores. Navy had eight Academic AllAmericans and five Patriot League Scholar Athletes of the Year, while 176 student-athletes were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Beth Reed (women’s soccer and basketball) and Mark Van Orden (Track & Field) won NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, while Kayla Sax (women’s cross country and track & field) won Gates, Cambridge and Trident scholarships. Seven of the top 15 Naval Academy graduates in the class of 2010 were involved with varsity athletics, while 40 of the top 100 graduates were involved with either varsity or club sports. One of the more successful programs this past season was the football team, which won a school-record tying 10 games against four losses, won the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy for a school-record seventh-consecutive year and participated in a bowl game for a record seventh-straight year. The Mids ran their winning streak at South Bend to two with a 23-21 upset of the 19thranked Irish and dominated Missouri, 35-13, in the Texas Bowl. Other teams who flourished in 2009-10 included the water polo team finishing the season ranked 15th in the Collegiate Water Polo Association top 20, the rifle team finished eighth at the NCAA Championship, the wrestling team placed 46th at the NCAA Championship, the intercollegiate sailing team matched its finish from a year ago at the ICSA Coed Dinghy Nationals with a seventh-place finish and placed sixth at the ICSA Team Race Nationals, the men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Championship for a fourth-straight year, the women’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and finished the year ranked 19th in the country and the lightweight crew team finished second at the IRA National Championship. Gladchuk’s efforts have been recognized on a national level as well, as the Division IA Athletic Directors Association named him the 2005 Bobby Dodd Athletic Director of the Year. The award is presented in recognition of an athletic director’s support and commitment toward the successful advancement of the department, most specifically in the sport of football. Additionally, he was recognized by the Secretary of the Navy for his contributions and service to the Navy and the Naval Academy with the Superior Public Service Award to the Department of the Navy. Gladchuk has been able to parlay Navy’s athletic success into an exclusive television deal with CBS College Sports Network that has increased Navy’s television exposure both in the United States and internationally. CBS College Sports Network, the first 24-hour college sports network, televises every Navy home and select neutral site football games (excluding Notre Dame and Army which are televised nationally by CBS), as well as other Midshipmen men's and women's athletic events, original programming and documentaries

centered on the storied Navy athletic program. The long-term, multi-media agreement includes internet streaming, broadband and video-on-demand rights and high definition rights. A major part of the agreement was that all home football games would be played on Saturday for the convenience of the Navy alumni. Navy sports are seen all over the world with the international distribution of Navy programming, especially to the troops serving abroad. Navy’s contract with CBS College Sports Network runs through 2018. Gladchuk has also added radio giants WBAL (1090 AM) in Baltimore and WFED (1500 AM, 1050 AM, 820 AM) in Washington D.C./Northern Virginia to Navy’s radio network. WBAL Radio, which is also the home of the Ravens, is Maryland's dominant and most powerful radio station. Since 1925, generations of Marylanders have turned to WBAL Radio for news, weather, thought-provoking discussions and sports. As Maryland's only 50,000-watt AM station, WBAL's signal travels substantially further than any other station in the state. WFED Radio, which is also the home of the Washington Nationals, is a 50,000-watt station that will air a minimum of 10 regular-season football games. WFED is your source for federal news covering both the Federal Government and those who do business with the government. Since being introduced as the Academy's 28th Director of Athletics on Sept. 4, 2001, Gladchuk has pressed forward on numerous fronts with energy and vision. From the hiring of Paul Johnson and Ken Niumatalolo as head football coaches to the renovation of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Gladchuk has made improvements in several key areas that will prove more success on the athletic fields for years to come. Recent head coaching hires such as Bill Roberts in men’s swimming, John Morrison in women’s swimming, Paul Kostacopoulos in baseball, Keith Puryear in women’s tennis, the all-time winningest women’s lacrosse coach in NCAA history, Cindy Timchal, and the all-time winningest soccer coach in NCAA history on any level, Dave Brandt, have advanced those programs into the national limelight. During Gladchuk’s tenure at the Naval Academy, he has seen the Midshipmen win 64 conference titles, produce 128 All-Americans and 44 Academic All-Americans. Gladchuk has also worked tirelessly to bring back school spirit, working in conjunction with school officials to encourage midshipmen to attend events for all sports. He has embraced the local community and alumni base, and is an oftenrequested speaker, visiting areas all over the country as he shares the vision of the Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Athletic Association. Gladchuk’s biggest impact on the Naval Academy has been the $42 million renovation of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium where under his leadership the stadium was completely refurbished over a four-year time frame. The addition of 6,500 permanent seats on the sidelines and in the end zones, 32 luxury boxes, dropping the field eight feet and moving the sidelines closer, two video scoreboards, a memorial plaza, upgraded restroom and concession areas, a perimeter walking path, new lighting, a new sound system, landscaping the grounds and storm water management highlight the list of renovations. Gladchuk has worked closely with the city, county, state and neighborhood associations to ensure proper communication and sensitivity to issues that benefit both the NAAA and community at large. The NAAA was awarded the Green Star award by Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer for commitment to the environment during the ongoing renovation of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Gladchuk and the NAAA have also teamed up with the Naval Academy

Foundation to raise over $75 million in private giving for facilities such as the Brigade Sports Complex (hockey and tennis), Max Bishop Stadium (baseball), varsity squash courts, various team locker rooms and a number of practice facilities. Other highlights of Gladchuk’s tenure at the Naval Academy include the recent renegotiation of the Army-Navy contract which resulted in over $46 million to the two schools over the next eight years, scheduling Maryland, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Army at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to promote Navy football in the community, negotiating the extension of the Navy-Notre Dame football game television contract with CBS through 2018 and negotiating bowl deals with the Houston, Emerald, Poinsettia, Meineke Car Care, EagleBank, Texas and Armed Forces Bowls. Gladchuk is heavily involved with NCAA and Patriot League committees. He recently was selected to serve on the NCAA Leadership Council, which is one of the highest NCAA appointments an athletic director can realize. The council will help set the Division I legislative agenda and advises the NCAA regarding major legislative issues being considered. The primary responsibility of the council is to identify those issues on the horizon that can impact Division I and intercollegiate athletics as a whole and will spend much of its time planning for the future of Division I and will help set the course for the future. Gladchuk is also on the NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors) Executive Committee and has served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee in the Patriot League and a member of the NCAA Olympic Sport Liaison Committee. Gladchuk came to the Naval Academy from the University of Houston, where he had been the Director of Athletics since July 18, 1997. Recognized as one of the nation’s top leaders in intercollegiate athletics management, he guided the Cougars to 19 Conference USA Championships, while making significant strides in the academic success of their student-athletes, gender equity and fiscal management. Before Houston, Gladchuk was the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation for seven years at his alma mater, Boston College. Under Gladchuk, Boston College emerged as one of the NCAA’s elite programs of the 1990s winning numerous Big East and NCAA Championships. The school’s graduation rate for all studentathletes was over 90 percent and the Eagles won the College Football Association’s Academic Achievement Award for the highest graduation rates among all Division I schools in three of his last five years at Boston College. Gladchuk led the Alumni Stadium expansion effort, which resulted in a $35 million improvement to the football stadium. Prior to rejoining Boston College, Gladchuk served as AD at Tulane University from 1987-90. During his tenure, he directed the reinstatement of the Green Wave basketball program to Division I status. In addition, he oversaw the construction of new facilities for the athletics administration as well as baseball, track and field and tennis teams after a $25 million athletics campaign was successfully completed. From 1985-87, he served as Associate AD at Syracuse University, heading operations, NCAA compliance, financial aid and facility operations. Gladchuk lettered in football at Boston College and graduated with honors in business management in 1973. He earned a master’s in sports administration from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1974, where he began his career in intercollegiate athletics, including serving for seven years as Director of General Physical Education, Assistant and Associate Athletic Director for the university. He also has served as Director of Athletics and head football coach for the New Hampton (Prep) School in New Hampshire prior to leaving for UMass. He and his wife, Kathy, have four children: John, a graduate of Loyola Marymount; Katie, a graduate of Boston College; Christie, a graduate of Trinity and Julie, a graduate of the University of North Carolina.

FIRST-RATE FACULTY & STAFF The Naval Academy's philosophy of education stresses attention to individual students by highly qualified faculty members who are strongly committed to teaching. Classes are small, with an average size of fewer than 18 students and a student-faculty ratio of 8:1. All courses at the Naval Academy are taught and graded by faculty members, not by graduate assistants.

Women’s soccer’s Shelley Moeller (‘10) was a Third-Team Academic All-America honoree in 2009. Moeller was also a member of the Navy’s women’s lacrosse team.

Our 600-member faculty is an integrated group of officers and civilians in nearly equal numbers. Officers bring fresh ideas and experiences from operational units and staffs of the Navy and Marine Corps. The academy's civilian faculty members give continuity to the educational program and form a core of professional scholarship and teaching experience. Working together closely, these military and civilian faculty member form one of the strongest and most dedicated teaching faculties of any college or university in the United States.

MAJORS Students at the Naval Academy can select one of 53 different majors within 22 fields of study. The 22 fields of study are grouped into three different divisions: Division of Engineering and Weapons (aerospace engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, general engineering, mechanical engineering, Naval architecture, ocean engineering), Division of Math and Science (chemistry, computer science, general science, information technology, mathematics, oceanography, physics) and the Division of Humanities and Social Science (Arabic, Chinese, economics, English, history, political science, quantitative economics). In addition to graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science, students can attain a minor in one of seven different languages.

Beth Reed (‘10) was a First-Team Academic All-America selection for women’s soccer. Reed also played for the Navy women’s basketball team.

Students who excel at the Naval Academy have many opportunities to challenge and advance themselves through several special programs -- Trident Scholars, Honors Programs, and Voluntary Graduate Education Program (VGEP). Track and field athletes Kayla Sax and Tyrell Arment were part of the 10-member Trident Scholar program’s Class of 2010. SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS In addition to furthering their education at schools across the country, students at the Naval Academy annually are in competition for several prestigious scholarships. Since Navy's first Rhodes Scholar, E. Van Meter ('28), a total of 45 Naval Academy graduates have received the Rhodes Scholarship, including 12 since 2001. Among Navy's most recent recipients is former baseball player Trevor Thompson ('05). 24 grads have won George C. Marshall Scholarships, including 14 since 2000. Standout swimmer Kelly Zahalka ('09) was a recipient of both the Harry S. Truman and Gen. George C. Marshall Scholarships, which paved the way for her to study for two years in the United Kingdom.

Kayla Sax (‘10) was a recipient of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, becoming the ninth honoree from the Naval Academy.

Women's track and cross country runner Kayla Sax ('10) became just the ninth student from the Naval Academy to be awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which will enable her to contribute to research focused on alternative energy sources at the University of Cambridge in the coming year. Both soccer's Beth Reed ('10) and track 's Mark Van Orden ('10) were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and will be pursuing graduate degrees before resuming their respective naval careers on a full-time basis.

Football’s John Dowd (‘12) was a Second-Team Academic All-America honoree in 2009-10.

Evan Barnes (‘08) is one of four Navy student-athletes to have been honored as First-Team Lowe’s Senior All-America as part of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Track and field’s Mark Van Orden (‘10) was a

recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and will pursue a graduate degree beginning the 2010-11 academic year.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Naval Academy student-athletes have totaled 75 Academic All-America certificates over the years, with 42 of those awards coming since the start of the 1999-2000 academic year. USNA student-athletes have garnered eight awards during the 2009-10 academic year. The 2009-10 honorees included women’s soccer first-team selection Beth Reed (‘10), second-team football honoree John Dowd (‘12), women’s soccer third-teamer Shelly Moeller (‘10), first team rifle selections Liz Leckie (‘10) and Kenan Wang (‘11), men’s swimming first-team honoree Alex Buck (‘11), third-team men’s lacrosse selection Joe Lennon (‘10) and men’s track & field first-teamer Mark Van Orden (‘10). In addition to earning first-team status, Reed also became the first Naval Academy Academic All-American to receive the top award for her respective sport, as she was named the Division I Women’s Soccer Academic All-American of the Year – the highest academic honor bestowed upon any Division I women’s soccer student-athlete. GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE For the fifth year in a row, the United States Naval Academy is at the head of the class for graduating NCAA student-athletes on the Division IA level. Navy graduated 100 percent of its student-athletes in 10 of the 20 NCAA sports reported on and averaged an overall rate of 98 percent for student-athletes in all sports – the second-highest mark nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision schools.

LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD Navy has been well represented in the nomination process for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, started in 2001 by Dick Enberg in response to the growing trend of men's basketball players leaving school early for the NBA. The award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: classroom, community, character and competition. Navy has produced four first-team honorees in their respective sports over the last four years, highlighted by 2008 grad Evan Barnes, who was men’s soccer’s inaugural award winner in 2007. He, women’s basketball player Kate Hobbs ('07), women's soccer's Lizzie Barnes ('08) and men’s lacrosse’s Andy Tormey (‘09) each were named to the Lowe's Senior All-America First Team.

Kelly Zahalka (‘09) was a recipient of both the Harry S. Truman and Gen. George C. Marshall scholarships.

The men and women at the United States Naval Academy have committed themselves to the service of our country. During their four years in Annapolis, they also take part in service for the community.

From outreach opportunities such as autograph sessions following athletic events to working with underpriveleged youth, the student-athletes at Navy give back to the area they call home during their college years. The following are a few examples of community service opportunities performed by the men and women of Navy athletics during the 2009-10 academic year.

BASEBALL The baseball team adopted a local child with a brain tumor through the Friends of Jaclyn Organization. The child became a fixture at Navy’s home baseball games and the team has taken an active role in his and his family’s lives. The team presented them with an autographed baseball by the team, visited their house, attended his concert and sister’s swimming meet, spoken with him numerous times – especially after doctor’s appointments – and have helped him with his homework assignments. MEN’S BASKETBALL The men’s basketball team served as the host to a Navy Youth Center birthday party on the main court in Halsey Field House. FOOTBALL Quarterback Ricky Dobbs visited the Naval Academy Primary School and spoke to the firstgrade classroom, explaining the importance of doing the best in their studies and following their dreams. Dobbs had the students try on his football helmet and signed autographs for each of the children before going to visit both of the fourth-grade classrooms.

While in Houston for the Texas Bowl, the football team and the cheerleaders visited the children at the DePelchin Children’s Center. DePelchin was founded in 1892 by Kezia Payne DePelchin to shelter orphaned children. It was originally named the Faith Home, because Mrs. DePelchin had faith in the wonderful business leaders of Houston to support her cause. Although she died within a year, the community leaders, touched by her passion and mission, became united in their determination to carry on her work. Today, services are provided in over 60 locations in six counties in the southeastern part of Texas.

The Naval Academy is located in historic Annapolis, the capital of the State of Maryland. Annapolis was founded in 1640 as Anne Arundel Town and later became the first peacetime capital city of the United States of America in 1783. Annapolis, named to honor Queen Anne of England, was granted a royal charter as a city in 1708. Annapolis can also lay claim to having been a capital of the United States. From November 1783 to August 1784, the Continental Congress met in the State House. It was here that they accepted George Washington’s resignation as commander-in-chief and ratified the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War.

The colonial heritage of Annapolis is still evident as the city boasts more buildings from the 1700s than any other city in the country. The heart of downtown Annapolis has also been designated a National Historic District. Many fine examples of colonial architecture, including the State House, Hammond-Harwood House, Chase-Lloyd House and the William Paca House and Gardens, are open to visitors. In August, 2009, Annapolis was named a Top Ten finalist for the International Award for Livable Communities, a competition focused on creating livable communities through sound environmental practices.

Annapolis is located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. The Chesapeake provides natural environs, sightseeing, sailing, fishing and more, helping Annapolis become the sailing capital of the world. The water-lover will also revel in the fact that Maryland has nearly 4,000 miles of shoreline – more than any other state. Within 30 minutes of Annapolis lies both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, providing entertainment and sightseeing opportunities for residents and tourists alike.
