We also have added two very solid plebes to the team in Austin Jones and Alex Gaines. “As for our returning players, Calvin Mark, who was a first-team all-league selection and a three-time league player-of-the-month recipient last year, looks to move up to No. 1 singles this year. Calvin has a great forehand and does a great job of dictating off the ground. He went 28-7 in singles last year and 29-5 in doubles. Jones moves right away into the No. 2 position, and posted a 2-1 record for us there at the Navy Blue Invitational. He has a very solid all-court game. He is just as comfortable playing from the baseline as he is serving and volleying. He stays very composed on the court. “Peter McDonald will play No. #3 for us, as he did so well last year. Peter can hurt an opponent with his big forehand as well as with his serving and volleying. He went 21-9 in singles last year and 28-4 in doubles with Calvin Mark. Blake Daniel dictates play with his groundstrokes off the ground. His forehand is excellent and is comfortable attacking. Blake compiled a 21-9 record at No. 4 last year and is slated to play there again this year. “Nicholas Gutsche, our team captain, went 19-11 at No. 5 last year. NIck has a tremendous backhand and has worked to get more racquet head speed on the

forehand. He has a very good attacking game, as well, and looks to play No. 5 once again. Our No. 6 flight will be a battle between Tyler Burnett and Gaines. Alex won the No. 6 flight at the Navy Blue Invitational. He has penetrating groundstrokes and a big first serve. Tyler went 12-11 last year while playing anywhere from Nos. 4-6. He has very good racquet head speed on the groundstrokes and good placement with his lefty serve. “Additionally, Matt Richmond was a starter for us two years ago. He is a steady baseliner who can wear down his opponents. He will give us excellent depth. Alex Sisk won two of his three singles matches last season. Alex is a very hard worker and has great athletic ability. “Doubles looks to be a strength for us this year. Mark and McDonald had a banner year last season in going 28-4 at the No. 1 flight. They are both great competitors who fight hard for every point. Our plebe tandem of Gaines and Jones went 2-1 at the Navy Blue Invitational at the No. 2 position. They play aggressive doubles and are looking to always stay on the offensive. Gutsche and Daniel return as the No. 3 team. They won the No. 3 flight at the Navy Blue Invitational. “The team has a had a strong run of five championships in the last six years and looks to add to that this year. We have great competitors on this team who will fight for every point. Our goals in include winning the Patriot League Title as well as winning 20 matches. I am very confident in this team.”

2012-13 NAVY MEN’S TENNIS John Officer
Head Coach 28th Season Boston College ‘79
Patriot League Champions –– 1996, ‘97, ‘99, 2007, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10, ‘12 Patriot League Coach of the Year –– 1996, ‘99, 2007, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10, ‘12 John Officer, the most decorated head coach in Patriot League men’s tennis history, enters his 28th season as the mentor for the Navy program. Officer has guided the Mids to five of the last six Patriot League titles and to a league-best eight crowns in all over the last 16 seasons. He also earned league coach-of-the-year accolades in helping Navy to the 2012 championship. The nod was the seventh of his career, which is the most laurels earned by any Patriot League men’s tennis coach. In addition to his league-high eight Patriot League titles in 20 seasons at Navy (and two Colonial Athletic Association crowns), the Mids have reached the finals of the league tournament on three other occasions during the existence of the head-to-head format to decide the league champion and placed second once when the title winner was determined by team points. Officer has led his Navy teams to an overall record of 427-282 and to winning (above .500) seasons in all but three of his 27 seasons. Over the last six years alone, the Mids have produced an overall record of 104-62 and a mark of 38-4 against league foes. The current format (established in 2003) for determining the All-Patriot League teams has resulted in 15 Mids garnering a total of 27 laurels. This includes Marcus Rebersak, Calvin Mark and Peter McDonald being recognized as first-team all-league performers during the 2012 campaign. The prior format utilized by the league from its inception through the 2002 season saw 13 of Officer’s singles players and nine of his doubles teams receive all-league accolades. Additionally, members of the Navy team have been selected as the Patriot League Player of the Year on seven occasions, including Mitchell Koch and Nate Nelms, who both received the honor twice, while Mark became the fifth Mid to be tabbed as the league’s rookie (freshman) of the year since the award was established in 2002. Navy players also have been annually recognized for their academic achievements. Nick Birger was selected as the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s tennis following the conclusion of the 2010 and ‘11 seasons, was the league’s overall male scholar-athlete of the year as a senior and was the valedictorian of the USNA’s Class of 2011. Also, Navy players have accrued 52 placements onto the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll over the years. On a national level, Navy attained its highest ranking of No. 75 during the 2000 season and has received a regional ranking 10 times. Individually, Craig Moringiello and Mitch Koch earned a top-100 national ranking in 1991 and ‘99, respectively, while the duo and Chris Thompson totaled five regional rankings in singles. Officer also has had four of his doubles tandems garner a regional ranking.

In addition to Officer’s seven Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year awards, other honors for Officer include him being selected as the 1986 CAA Coach of the Year, as the USPTA Mid-Atlantic and National Coach of the Year in 1991, as the ITA Regional Coach of the Year in 1991 and ‘99, and as the Naval Academy Athletic Association’s Spring Season Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2007. A native of Hanover, N.H., Officer graduated from Boston College in 1979 (history) before earning a Master’s Degree (education) from Boston University. He served as the head coach of tennis team at B.U. for two years before arriving on The Yard. Along with his coaching duties at Navy, Officer also is a Professor of Physical Education at the school. Outside of Navy, Officer has completed a 10-part series of tennis instructional videos, and recently authored the book, Discovering Your Passion: The Path of the Spiritual-Warrior. 2012-13 NAVY MEN’S TENNIS John Moreland
Jim Laitta
2009 ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year
1996 ACC Women’s Coach of the Year
Assistant Coach 12th Season Washington College ‘96
John Moreland is in his 12th season as the lead assistant coach for the Navy men’s tennis program. The Mids have compiled a 169-119 dual match record during his 11 seasons, which includes a record of 57-19 against Patriot League foes. Over the last six seasons, Navy has posted an overall record of 104-62, a 38-4 mark versus league foes and has won five Patriot League Tournament titles. Moreland was selected as the 2009 ITA Northeast Region Coach of the Year following a season in which he helped guide the Mids to an 18-8 record and the third of the team’s four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. After graduating from Washington College (Chestertown, Md.) in 1996, Moreland immediately began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach at Marietta College (Marietta, Ohio). He would return to his alma mater in 1998 as an assistant coach for both tennis programs at the school. During his two years at the school he coached two singles players and four doubles players who earned All-America honors, as well as a pair of ITA regional singles and doubles champions. Moreland would serve as the head coach of the men’s and women’s teams at St. Mary’s College for one season prior to arriving at Navy. He would coach the conference women’s rookie of the year during his lone campaign at St. Mary’s. In addition to his Bachelor’s Degree from Washington College, he also earned a Master’s Degree from the school in 2004. Moreland married his wife, Kay, during the summer of 2011.
Volunteer Assistant Coach Third Season Eastern Kentucky ‘88
The 2012-13 season will be Jim Laitta’s third as a volunteer assistant coach with the program. Laitta most recently served as an assistant coach at Ohio State during the 200910 season. The Buckeyes compiled a 35-2 record on the year and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to the eventual national champions, USC. Prior to his one-year stint in Columbus, Ohio, Laitta spent 19 seasons as a head coach with the Maryland tennis programs. While coaching the men’s team for all 19 years in College Park, he also served as the head coach of the school’s women’s team for his first 11 years at the school. When he arrived in College Park, neither tennis program received any scholarship funding. The women’s team became fully funded in his eighth season while the men’s program reached that level toward the end of his time at the school. Despite those limitations, Laitta led the women’s team to a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances (1996, ‘98, ‘99) and saw the men’s program earn a national ranking in each of his final three seasons. Individually, he was tabbed as the ACC Women’s Coach of the Year in 1996. A 1988 graduate of Eastern Kentucky, Laitta began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Mississippi State women’s team during the 1988-89 season. Mississippi State’s doubles tandem of Claire Pollard and Jackie Holden won the NCAA national championship that season. He then was elevated to head coach for the 1989-90 campaign before departing for Maryland after the conclusion of the season.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 84 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973. • 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores.

The U.S. Naval Academy dedicated and opened the Tose Family Tennis Center and the entire Thornton D. and Elizabeth S. Hooper Brigade Sports Complex during the fall of 2007. The tennis portion of the facility, named after Maurice (‘78) and Terri Tose and their family, features six indoor and six outdoor tennis courts, with the indoor hard courts encompassing some 49,000 square feet. The outdoor courts include the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium, named after Rick (‘61) and Donna Fluegel and Bill (‘61) and Sandra Moore, while one indoor court has been dedicated in the name of James (‘58) and Rosemary Adkins. “Our new indoor tennis facility will be a tremendous addition for our team training, as well as a draw for future recruits,” said Navy head coach John Officer. “The facility is first class and already has to be considered one of the finest in the country.” Located across the Severn River and adjacent to the Naval Academy Golf Course, the 150,000-square foot facility was privately funded and built at a cost of $18.5 million. In addition to the tennis wing of the complex, it also includes hockey and rugby venues, an indoor hitting, chipping and putting facility for the golf team and club members, a fitness center, a restaurant, the pro shop for the golf course, athletic training rooms, numerous locker rooms for all of the Navy and visiting teams, office space for the various coaches and meeting rooms for each of the programs. p Bill (‘61) and Sandra Moore with Chet Gladchuk, Director of Athletics, at the outdoor court dedication on Sept. 25, 2009.

The Naval Academy Athletic Association dedicated the Dyer Tennis Clubhouse in ceremonies held in November of 2000. The facility is named to honor the late Vice Admiral George Dyer (Academy Class of 1919) by his daughter and her husband, Jo and Weston Burnett. Mr. Burnett is also an Academy graduate (‘43) and retired with the rank of Commander. The Burnett’s are longtime supporters of the Navy tennis program. “This is a suitable facility for not only an excellent tennis team, but also a proper way to honor Vice Admiral George Dyer,” said Mr. Burnett. “He was well known throughout Annapolis for his charitable works, and this will only add to his legacy.” The building includes coaches offices, a racquet stringing room, locker rooms for both coaches and players, a lounge, a public address system and a viewing deck overlooking the courts. “We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Burnetts to the Navy tennis program,” said then-Director of Athletics, Jack Lengyel. “The Dyer Tennis Clubhouse will only help to enhance and strengthen an already highly successful program.” “We are very grateful to the Dyer family for their contribution to the Navy tennis program,” said Navy head coach John Officer. “The Dyer Tennis Clubhouse is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation. It is a wonderful building the team will be able to enjoy for many years to come.”
