Dr. Sho Fukushima Head Coach 22nd Year at Navy • 215-211 (.506) Washington ‘71
Dr. Sho Fukushima, a tenured professor in Physical Education, has guided the Navy gymnastics program for the past 21 seasons with class, honor and dignity. The numbers -- both academically and athletically -- that have been produced during Fukushima’s tenure speak for themselves. In the classroom, Fukushima has produced 40 All-America Scholar-Athletes, and in the athletic arena, he has coached the Mids to a total of 38 NCAA Championship qualifying performances. “When I first arrived at the Naval Academy, there was no organization at all in the program,” Fukushima said. “I was determined to change everything in the program and have it fit my liking. It took nearly three years, but I was finally able to blend Midshipmen who excelled in the classroom and in the athletic arena.” Last season, Fukushima guided Navy to its fourth consecutive Star as the Mids defeated Army in Annapolis. Fukushima also mentored Andrew Faulk to one of the best individual seasons in program history. Faulk was named a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top senior male gymnast. He was the first Nissen-Emery Award finalist from Navy since 1973. Faulk, who placed 13th in the all-around at the NCAA Championships, also earned the Thompson Trophy Cup, which is presented annually to the midshipman, male or female, who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy. In 2009, he guided the Mids to one of their finest seasons since taking over the reigns, as they finished with an impressive 15-4 record and coached Navy to a N-Star victory at Army, in addition to its second-straight All-Academy Championship. The Midshipmen also earned their first trip as a team to the NCAA Qualifying Meet. The accomplishments of his athletes at Navy has also brought him much deserved individual recognition as well. In 1997-98, 1999-00, 2004-05 and 2007-08, Fukushima was named Coach of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) and was named Men’s Team Coach of the Year by USA Gymnastics. He was also named East Region Coach of the Year by the coaches’ association and, two years ago, was honored as the ECAC Coach of the Year. “The individual awards are nice, but what is special when some of my former gymnasts have returned and finally thanked me for what I was able to do for them when they were here,” he added. “That is what makes coaching special.” Fukushima, who owns a 213-209 (.505) all-time record, came to Navy in 1991 after coaching in several places around the world. He began his gymnastics career in Japan and moved onto other places, including the Montreal Olympics and the Verna World Championships. He has coached five Olympians and five USA National Team members. He has also published two books on gymnastics in Sweden and England, in addition to writing numerous articles in Europe, Japan and the United States. Fukushima graduated from Washington with a B.A. and M.S., and completed his Ph.D. at California in 1984. He earned the Pac-8 Conference ScholarAthlete-of-the-Year award in 1971, while also achieving All-America status. He was Pac-10 Coach of the Year at California three times (1984,‘87,‘89) and was also NCAA Western Region Coach of the Year in 1980.
Gessner, Ingram and Grinaski Earn All-America Scholar-Athlete Accolades Nate Gessner, Aaron Ingram and Ian Grinaski were both recognized for their efforts in the classroom last season as each was named to the College Gymnastics Association’s All-America Scholar-Athlete first team.

Craig Holt Assistant Coach 14th Year at Navy Syracuse ‘95
Craig Holt enters his 14th season as Navy assistant coach. Holt brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in the sport of gymnastics as both a former athlete and assistant coach. “Navy is a program built on maximizing individual achievement for the good of the team’s success,” Holt said. “As a team, our training is intense, consistent and scientific. This model helps us develop a strong base of physical gymnastics skill, mental preparation and a strong character.” Holt helped coach Andrew Faulk to his spectacular 2012 season, which included a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2011, Holt was named ECAC Tri-Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped guide Dylan Parrott and Andrew Faulk to the NCAA Championships. In 2009, Holt assisted in helping the Midshipmen to a memorable season, as they finished with an impressive 15-4 record and a N-Star victory at Army. In addition, the Mids won their second-straight All-Academy Championship, placed second at the ECAC Championship and advanced as a team to the NCAA Qualifying Meet for the first time in program history. His efforts in the gym have not gone unrecognized, as he was named the 2007 NCAA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year, 2006 and ’08 USAG Collegiate Division Assistant Coach of the Year, 2007 and ‘11 ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year and 2007 CGA Regional Co-Assistant Coach of the Year. During the summer of 2005, Holt coached the United States team in the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Holt guided the United States to a second-place team finish with gold medal performances in the floor exercise and pommel horse. In addition to his coaching duties, Holt also served as a judge at the Maccabiah Games. Holt came to the Academy after serving as an assistant coach for one season at William & Mary and two years at his alma mater, Syracuse. Holt’s commitment to the Navy program in and out of the gym was recognized in 2003 as he was named the ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year. “I would like all of our athletes to leave the Naval Academy knowing that they have the tools to not only meet, but exceed all that is expected of them,” he added. “They should have a strong sense of confidence and accomplishment as they begin their careers.” As a gymnast, Holt was an NCAA finalist on the rings in 1994. He is a 1995 graduate of Syracuse, where he earned a degree in physical education. Holt earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Syracuse in the summer of 2002.

2013 NAVY GYMNASTICS SEASON PREVIEW With a total of 12 newcomers and no seniors on the roster, the Navy gymnastics team will look to forge a new identity in 2013. The young Midshipmen return five letterwinners from last season’s team, including just one upperclassman in junior Chris Junghans. “Chris is determined to lead this team,” said Navy head coach Dr. Sho Fukushima. “First, it is by example. His all-around performance in the six events should lead the rest of the team with not only more difficult skills, but also with a more technically sound routine.” Junghans saw action in every meet last season. He competed in the all-around eight times and posted a season-high score of 82.0 at the USAG Championships, good for third place. The native of Dunkirk, Md., also joined teammate Andrew Faulk at the NCAA Qualifier where he placed sixth in the all-around. While Junghans, the team captain, is the only upperclassman, he’ll be joined by a host of sophomores who gained valuable experience last season. Thomas Goodell, Alex Hoersten, Jeff Sauers and Eric Viscardi all contributed to the success of the team last season in various roles and will be counted on in even more ways in 2013.

“Eric and Jeff should challenge Chris on the floor exercise,” said Fukushima. “Eric is very good on the rings and vault and should lead our team in both events.” Viscardi competed primarily in the rings and vault as a freshman, but saw action in the floor exercise in each of the last three meets of the season. His best meet of the 2012 campaign came against Temple where he registered season-high scores in the rings (13.5) and vault (14.3). He ended his freshman campaign with a season-best 13.4 on the floor exercise at the ECAC Championships. Sauers saw action in nearly every meet in the floor exercise and vault. His best floor exercise score (14.2) came at the West Point Open, while his best vaulting total came against William & Mary (14.1). Goodell competed on the rings in every meet in which he saw action in 2012. He also competed on the parallel bars and horizontal bar in all but one meet. His top score on the horizontal bar was a 13.6 against William and Mary. “Thomas and Josh Steves should vie for the team’s top spot on the horizontal bar,” said Fukushima.

2013 NAVY GYMNASTICS SEASON PREVIEW Steves joins Trevor Carson, Ian Grinaski and Alex Hoersten as returning sophomores that saw action as rookies last season.
Va. The Mids and Tribe competed on consecutive weekends last season with each team winning at its home venue.
Navy’s 12-member freshman class includes Zac Ceroli, Michael Dorsey, David Frick, Josh Gong, Connor Gonzales, Mitchell Larios, Cameron Morgenweck, Eric Morrison, Jacob Moses, Eric Poletti, Andrew Potts and Connor Westrick.
Navy will make the first of two trips to Army on Feb. 1-2 for the West Point Open. Navy will return to West Point on Feb. 23 for the annual Star Meet. The Midshipmen will be looking to retain the Star as they have captured each of the last four duals with Army.
“We have many great young gymnasts that will fill gaps in our team lineup in all six events,” said Fukushima.
In addition to the West Point Open and Star meet, the Black Knights make two more appearances on the Mids’ schedule. Navy will join both Army and Air Force on Feb. 16 for the All-Academy Championships, which will be held in Atlanta, Ga. The Mids fell just short of claiming the All-Academy title last season, missing the top spot by only two points.
Poletti is expected to contribute in the all-around, while Westrick and Morrison will see action on the pommel horse. Larios figures to be a factor in the vault and Potts on the parallel bars. “It’s difficult to predict at this time how our other younger gymnasts will contribute this season,” said Fukushima. “We hope our growing pains will be minor as our young gymnasts grow.” Navy will kick off the 2013 season with the annual Navy Open on Jan. 19 at Macdonough Hall. The Mids will welcome William & Mary, Temple, Penn State and Springfield to this year’s event. The annual home invitational kicked off the season for the Mids last year as well where they placed second. The following weekend, Navy will host William & Mary in the first of three dual meets between the programs. The two teams will meet on Jan. 27 and March 9 in Annapolis and on March 16 in Williamsburg,
On March 23, Navy will head to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on both Army and Temple. The championship portion of the Mids’ season will begin March 29-30 with the USAG Championships in Williamsburg, Va. The following weekend, Navy will be in Springfield, Mass., for the ECAC Championships. The 2013 NCAA National Qualifying Meet will take place on April 18, with team and individual finals following on April 19 and 20, respectively. This year’s NCAA Qualifying Meet and Championships will take place on the campus of Penn State in University Park, Pa.
