Larry Bock

2014 NAVY VOLLEYBALL

Third Season

Head Coach Penn State ‘71

Larry Bock, who has accrued more victories than any other volleyball coach in NCAA history, enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Mids in the fall of 2014. Bock has won 130 more matches than the coach with the next highest tally of victories, and has recorded 63 more wins than the second-place coach on the women’s side of the sport. Additionally, the winning percentage for his women’s teams is tied for eighth among all NCAA coaches who have at least 10 seasons of experience. His impact on the Navy program was felt during the 2012 season, his second on The Yard. After posting just one Patriot League victory in each of the two previous years, the Mids finished the season with a 7-7 record and placed fifth in the league. That six-win increase from one season to the next is the largest one-year improvement for victories in league history. Additionally, Navy’s placement in the league was the highest for the Mids since tying for fifth place in 2008. Navy also stopped a 15-match losing streak in league road outings by finishing the year with a 3-4 mark in league matches played away from Annapolis. Additionally, Navy recorded 11 overall wins on the season after having totaled 13 wins the two previous years. Helping the Mids to their improved record was their winning five home matches on the year after Navy had won a total of six home matches in the previous two seasons combined, as well as winning three true road matches on the season after having posted a 3-20 mark in road matches played over the course of the 2010-11 seasons. Navy’s ascension continued in 2013. The Mids posted a 9-7 record in the Patriot League to finish the year with the first winning league campaign by the Mids since the 2007 season. That ledger also gave the Mids their first back-to-back seasons with at least a .500 record since the 2004-05 seasons. Additionally, Navy’s 13 wins on the year were the most for the program since 2008. Bock arrived at Navy having compiled an overall record of 1,352-283-4 (82.6%) in 40 seasons as a collegiate volleyball head coach. That tally included a mark of 1,252-192 (86.7%) in 34 seasons as the head coach of the women’s program at Juniata and a mark of 100-91-4 (52.3%) in six years as the head coach of the Juniata men’s team. Including his two years at Navy, he has compiled an overall record of 1,369-321-4 (80.9%) and a women’s mark of 1,269-230 (84.7%). Juniata’s women’s teams won at least 30 matches in each of the last 31 seasons and surpassed 40 victories on 10 different occasions during this span. The Eagles compiled a staggering 358-14 record (96.2%) against conference foes, and last dropped a match against a conference opponent in 1983. And while Juniata competes on the NCAA’s Division III level, Bock’s teams posted a 67-23 record against NCAA Division I programs during his tenure at the school. Bock guided the Eagles to each of the 30 NCAA D-III Tournaments that have been contested. Juniata won NCAA titles in 2004 and 2006, appeared in a total of eight national championship matches and advanced to the semifinal match of the national tournament in 14 of his last 15 seasons and 25 times in all. Juniata posted a 94-36 record in the NCAA Tournament under Bock. Individually, Bock’s players garnered 65 All-America certificates, four American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player-of-the-Year awards and one National Rookie-of-the-Year laurel. Additionally, five Juniata players received College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America accolades, two were selected as the organization’s Academic All-American of the Year and two received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. On the men’s side, Juniata won a trio of Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association divisional titles under Bock, who himself was tabbed as the EIVA D-III Coach of the Year in both 1993 and ‘94.

What Others Are Saying About Larry Bock

“Navy has scored a remarkable coup. Larry is without a doubt one of the most successful and talented coaches I know. His players rave about the experience they had playing for him. He is the complete package as a coach; he can recruit, train a team and can relate well with the players. He is exceptional during matches and is passionate about the sport. I am a big fan and admirer.” –– Doug Beal, head coach of the 1984 and 2008 U.S. Olympic Men’s Volleyball Team; Current CEO of USA Volleyball “Larry’s record speaks for itself. With all the great coaches in our profession, the fact that he has accumulated more victories than anyone speaks volumes of his coaching abilities.” –– Mary Wise, head coach, Florida women’s volleyball “His 34 years of experience, over 1,300 career wins and two NCAA titles speak for themselves. Larry Bock has a gift for motivating and empowering his athletes. As a player, I wanted to work hard for him because of the example he set. He consistently creates challenging and rewarding environments for his players to develop as athletes and people. Navy is privileged to work with Larry, a coach with a great combination of intellect, integrity, and professionalism.” –– Melissa Myers, head coach, Illinois State; former Juniata player “Larry Bock is one of the nation’s finest people and one of nation’s elite coaches. This move will enhance everything the Navy volleyball program is about and gives Coach Bock another avenue to share his gifts with these volleyball athletes and the entire Navy Athletic Department. I wish all the successes that the Navy volleyball program can achieve with Coach Bock guiding these women.” –– Don Flora, head coach, Texas Tech women’s volleyball “Larry’s record speaks for itself. He is recognized as one of the all-time great coaches in all NCAA divisions. It is amazing the level of success his Juniata teams have always had under him. But what stands out most for myself with Larry is the class and graciousness he has about himself. He sets the perfect example and his players follow that. He is the same person with opposing coaches after wins as he is after losses. Larry has many great years of coaching at an elite level left in him and the success he had at Juniata will follow him to Navy.” –– Julie Jenkins, head coach, Trinity University women’s volleyball “The U.S. Naval Academy women’s volleyball program has one of the bestkept secrets of volleyball in their midst. Larry Bock has the volleyball coaching experience and background most programs only hope they can attract. His ability to get the most out of his student-athletes will find certain footing in their collegiate careers and beyond. Volleyball with Larry is a journey for team excellence and as the years pass those who take that journey also find the blueprints for individual excellence as well.” –– Mark Pavlik, head coach, Penn State men’s volleyball

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had more than 93 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 92 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2013-14 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: I The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball APR. I 81 Patriot League teams recorded perfect graduation success rates and 92 earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in APR. I More than 93 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR. I League squads also won NCAA first-round or regional contests in football (Fordham), men’s soccer (Navy), women’s soccer (Boston University), women’s lacrosse (Loyola), softball (Boston University) and baseball (Bucknell). I Navy won the overall Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the second time in three years, while Army took first place on the men’s side and Boston University claimed the women’s title in its inaugural season. I Fifteen student-athletes earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football), Bucknell’s Joe Meyer (Men’s Soccer) and Navy’s Elizabeth Hoerner (Women’s Soccer). I Thirty-five student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. I There were 2,450 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14, including 128 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0. I American women’s basketball standout Alexis Dobbs and Navy women’s soccer star Elizabeth Hoerner and women’s rowing student-athlete Katherine Ashton each earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Dobbs and Hoerner were later named the Patriot League’s nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. I Fordham football and Loyola men and women’s lacrosse each finished in the top 10 of national polls, while Navy men’s soccer and American volleyball and field hockey each placed in the top 25 of their sport’s final national rankings. I Navy’s Jay Stell placed third in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, matching the best-ever finish for a Patriot League male and earning first-team All-America honors. I Navy’s Tom Duvall came in the top 10 in the 500 freestyle at the NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship to earn All-America honors, and was one of four Patriot Leaguers to compete in an individual event at either the NCAA Men or Women’s Championship.
