2014 NAVY MEN’S TRACK & FIELD Stephen Cooksey

Head Coach • 30th Year at Navy (26th as Head Coach) • Indiana State (‘72) Overall Record at Navy: 314-46 (.872) • Career Record: 328-72 (.819)

A veteran head coach with over 300 career wins, Stephen Cooksey will begin his 26th year at the helm of the Navy men’s track and field program in 2013-14. In his two-plus decades at the helm of the Navy men’s track and field program, the former AllAmerican high jumper and five-time Patriot League Coach of the Year has guided 12 Midshipmen to a total of 20 All-America honors, with Zack Duncavage earning the most recent distinction with an 11-place finish in the discus at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championship. Under his watch, Navy has compiled an overall dual meet record of 314-46 (.872), while earning six Patriot League team titles and a total of 168 individual league crowns. His teams have registered at least 10 combined victories 18 times and in 19 of 24 years as the Midshipmen’s top mentor. Moreover, since the start of the 1998-99 season, he has led Navy to a stellar 199-24 (.892) record. Cooksey directed the Mids to the program’s first sweep of the indoor and outdoor Patriot League titles in 2007-08. For his efforts, Cooksey garnered the league’s coach-of-the-year accolades during both seasons and was named USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Indoor Coach of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor season. The Midshipmen have won four Patriot League Indoor Championships (2004, 2005, 2008, 2011) in recent years with Cooksey at the helm. Additionally, Navy won the Heptagonal outdoor competition three-straight years from 1991-93 and posted back-to-back wins in the Heptagonal indoor championship in 1992 and `93. The team also captured the Colonial Athletic Association outdoor crown during the 1991 season. Cooksey’s success has also carried over into Navy’s Star Meet competitions against archrival Army, where his teams own a 28-20 career mark against the Black Knights. Over the last 14 years, the Mids have won 20-of-30 dual meet competitions against Army, including eight indoor and outdoor season sweeps. Navy swept Army in the indoor and outdoor Star Meets during the 2011-12 season. Navy defeated the Black Knights, 98-83, in Annapolis during the indoor season and bested the Black Knights, 102.5-100.5 during the outdoor season. Navy was also the team runner-up during both the indoor and outdoor seasons at the Patriot League Championship. Cooksey guided freshman Mark Vetere to both the indoor and outdoor Patriot League title in the event and he earned rookie-of-the-meet honors at both championship meets. Vetere was also a two-time IC4A All-East honoree and qualified for the NCAA’s East Regional Championship. In total in 2012, Navy sent five athletes to the NCAA’s East Regional Championship, with Duncavage, who would go on to place 16th at the NCAA Championship, faring the best with a seventh-place finish. Cooksey was named the Patriot League Indoor Coach of the Year during the

2014 NAVY MEN’S TRACK & FIELD 2010-11 season after leading Navy to the indoor team title. The Mids trailed Army by 32 team points with four events remaining (pole vault, 3,000, distance medley relay, 4x400 relay) in the championship. The Mids won the pole vault and the 3,000 and picked up huge points, outscoring Army 30-0 in the two events to enter the final two relays down just 2 points. Navy then won the DMR and Army placed second to set up the final event, the 4x400, which Navy won to take the team crown in a dramatic finish. Cooksey came to Annapolis in 1984 and assisted Al Cantello with both the cross country and the track & field teams at Navy for four seasons before taking over the reins of Navy’s track program. Before coming to Navy, Cooksey spent six years as the head cross country and track & field coach at Ball State, where he began as an assistant in 1974. He was acting head cross country coach for the Cardinals in the 1978-79 season and became the head coach of the cross country and track & field teams in 1979. During his time at Ball State, Cooksey worked with 18 NCAA qualifiers, three All-Americans and an NCAA champion. In 1998, he was named the head coach for the United States World Junior Championship team and has served as a coach on several other U.S. National teams. Most recently, Cooksey served as the head coach of the 2008 U.S. World Indoor Championship team. An associate professor in the physical education department at the Academy, Cooksey was named the recipient of the 2003 Superintendent’s Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for teaching and coaching. His road to becoming one of the top collegiate track coaches began in Terre Haute, Ind., where he was a nationally-ranked high-jumper, two-time captain and team MVP for the Indiana State track program. Cooksey enjoyed a decorated athletic career for the Sycamores, collecting an impressive list of individual accolades, including NCAA All-America and U.S. Track & Field Federation All-America honors. Cooksey and his wife, Valerie, have one daughter, Brooke, and reside in Annapolis, Md.

2014 NAVY MEN’S TRACK & FIELD Chris Campbell

Assistant Coach Throws Seventh Year at Navy U.S. Naval Academy ‘89 Chris Campbell, a 1989 Academy graduate, is entering his seventh season as an assistant and the throws coach at Navy. Campbell led the Navy throwers to a banner year in 2011-12. Campbell helped Zack Duncavage earn All-America Second-Team honors by placing 16th in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Duncavage also placed seventh in the discus at the NCAA’s East Regional Championship, won the Patriot League title and set a new school record in the event. Duncavage became Campbell’s first All-American while at Navy. Also in 2011-12, Miles Snelgrove won the javelin at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, placed fifth at the IC4A Championship to earn All-East honors and claimed 18th-place at the NCAA’s East Regional Championship. Chris Ricks also earned IC4A All-East honors in the hammer throw and Chris Boniwell won the Patriot League shot put title. Campbell’s throwers won the indoor league weight throw and the outdoor shot put during the 2010-11 season and freshman Zack Duncavage qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the discus. In both 2008 and 2009, Navy throwers have earned FieldAthlete-of-the-Meet honors at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, most recently with team captain and Academic All-American Mark Van Orden sweeping the conference’s hammer and weight throw titles to earn the distinction in 2009. Van Orden won two league titles as a senior and was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team. Campbell, himself, was a four-year letterwinner on the Midshipmen track & field team. A javelin thrower and former school record holder, he was elected team captain his senior year. Upon graduation, Campbell was assigned to the San Diegobased naval warship, USS COPELAND, which completed CARAT operations during Desert Storm and counter-narcotic operations off the coast of Central America in 1993. Campbell completed his military obligation as an Operations Officer at Naval Station Annapolis and achieved the rank of Lieutenant before resigning from the Navy in 1995. While completing his military obligation, he served as a volunteer coach at Navy while completing an M.S. in Education at Johns Hopkins University.

4

Campbell’s second coaching stop came at Ball State University, where he served as field events coach for the Cardinals program from 1996-99. During his tenure, Campbell directed student-athletes to NCAA qualifying marks in the hammer throw and high jump, four school records, and a Mid-American Conference hammer throw championship. In addition, he helped lead the 1998 Ball State women’s squad to both the Indoor and Outdoor MAC team titles. Following his three-year stint at Ball State, Campbell spent six seasons at Fresno State, including two as the associate head coach. There he mentored All-Americans in the decathlon, javelin and shot put, while helping the women’s team to the 2005 California-Nevada Coaches Association Team Championship, and the Bulldog men to the same title in 2000. The women’s squad also captured the WAC title in 2002, its first conference championship in 10 years. Campbell also held the role of recruiting coordinator while at Fresno State, inking several blue-chip athletes, including the nation’s top-ranked high school javelin thrower in 2003. Additionally, he served as Vice President of the California-Nevada Coaches Association and as Men’s and Women’s Development Chairperson for the Central Valley Chapter of USA Track and Field. While there, he also completed a Master of Arts in Kinesiology in 2003. Prior to Navy, Campbell served as an assistant for the combined men’s and women’s program at Michigan State. Working primarily with the throwers and multi-event athletes, he tutored nine Spartans to 16 scoring positions at the Big Ten Championships, four NCAA regional qualifying marks, a pair of NCAA provisional marks in the women’s pentathlon and heptathlon, and four school records. In addition to his coaching duties, Campbell served as assistant meet director for the 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships and directed the 30-team Spartan Invitational. Campbell has mentored a total of four NCAA All-Americans, seven junior national All-Americans, 43 NCAA regional and championships qualifiers, 21 conference champions, and four Olympic Trials participants. Campbell has also completed USATF Coaching Education Schools through Level III and has been a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist since 1996. Campbell and his wife, Julie, and son, Mark, reside in Annapolis.

2014 NAVY MEN’S TRACK & FIELD Al Cantello

Assistant Coach Distance 51st Year at Navy La Salle ‘55 A mainstay with the men’s track & field program, Al Cantello enters his 50th year of coaching at the Naval Academy. Cantello specializes in the distance area and is also Navy’s head men’s cross country coach. During the 2011-12 season, Cantello’s distance runners combined to win nine Patriot League individual and relay events. Additionally, Ken Bunnell (steeplechase) and Cody Rome (5,000m) both placed in the top 25 at the NCAA’s East Regional Championship. Cantello helped Navy’s men’s indoor track and field team win the team title in 2011 by taking first place in the mile, 3,000m, 5,000m, and distance medley relay. During the outdoor season, Cantello’s distance runners won the 1,500m, 5,000m, 3,000m steeplechase and Andrew Hanko won the IC4A Outdoor 5K title. Following the 2009-10 season, Cantello was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross County Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He led the 2009 Navy cross country team to a Patriot League Championship and four distance runners earned All-East honors at the IC4A Indoor Championships. Cantello also remains the guiding force for the Navy men’s cross country program, which he has helped mold into one of the most consistent teams nationally since being named head coach 43 years ago. Navy won four of the last five Patriot League Cross Country Championships and Cantello is a fourtime league cross country coach of the year each of the past four seasons. With an all-time record of 241-69-1 (.775), Cantello has coached several standout runners during his tenure in Annapolis. Jon Clemens received All-America honors during the 1996 cross country season, while John Mentzer was named a 1997 All-American in both the 5,000m and 10,000m. Michael Ryan earned similar honors in 1999 for his 4:01.57 time in the mile, and Erik Schmidt took fifth in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship in March of 2003. In addition, two of Navy’s distance relay teams were ranked among the nation’s top 15 during the 1999 outdoor campaign. The mile relay team of Eric Adams, John McNamara, Ryan Runge and Ryan was fourth in the nation, while the distance medley relay squad of Adams, Torrance Chaplin, Karlton

Holston and Ryan was nationally ranked, as well. As a result of his team’s successes, Cantello has been amply recognized, including being named the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year three times (1984, ‘85 and ‘92). In 1997, the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Cantello the Distinguished Athletic Leadership Award for a coach or faculty member who did the most for the physical development of the Midshipmen in physical education. Cantello also received the inaugural Tom Hamilton Teaching/ Coaching Award, as voted by his peers that same year. Additionally, this past spring Cantello, one of only two three-time winners of the javelin throw in the Penn Relays, was among the 16th group of inductees to the Penn Relays Wall Of Fame. From 1981-88, Cantello held a dual coaching role, guiding Navy’s men’s indoor and outdoor track squads while maintaining his cross country duties. Cantello owns a stellar .794 all-time winning percentage with over 300 victories as a head coach in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. Among his coaching triumphs are 46 N-Stars, including 35 in cross country - the most by a Navy coach in one sport. A 1955 graduate of La Salle, Cantello was a two-time AllAmerican in the javelin. He was enshrined as a charter member of La Salle’s Hall of Athletes in 1961. Cantello is also a charter member of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2012. A former world-class competitor in the javelin, Cantello once held every national and international record in the event. In 1959, he set a world record in the javelin and competed for the U.S. Olympic Team the following year in the 1960 Games in Rome. In 1964, Sport Magazine named Cantello to its all-time track & field team and voted him the world’s greatest javelin competitor. Cantello and his wife, Jackie, are the parents of three adult children - Karla McMahon, Karen O’Kane and the late Albert Jr. - and seven grandchildren.

Head coach Stephen Cooksey, in his 28th season, led Navy to its first Star Meet sweep since 2008. Navy won 10 of 17 events to win the Indoor Star Meet, 98-83. The Navy senior class captured eight of the team’s nine individual event victories. The Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet featured one of the most dramatic finishes in series history. Navy edged Army, 102.5-100.5, after the two teams were tied at 97.5-97.5 heading into the final event, the 4x400m relay. Navy’s 4x400m relay team of Kolton Kempel, Matt Evers, Alex Jackson and Lucas Connelly crossed in 3:18.55 just ahead of Army (3:19.78) to pull off the season sweep. The Mids claimed a pair of runner-up team finishes at the Patriot League Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Mids won 10 of 20 events, including the 500m, 800m, 1,000m, mile, 3,000m and 5,000m in a dominant display of mid-distance running. 2014 NAVY MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Built facing the scenic Severn River in 2008, the Wesley A. Brown Field House is a 140,000-square-foot multifunction athletic facility that has served as the home for the Naval Academy’s men’s track & field program. The facility boasts a unique combination of a 76,000-square-foot retractable Magic Carpet Astroturf system and a Mondo track surface with hydraulically controlled banked curves. The 200-meter hydraulic banked track is one of only four of its kind in the United States. It also features dual pole vault/jumping runways and throwing areas. State-of-the-art weight training and sports medicine facilities, as well as equipment storage areas round out this newest crown jewel to the Navy athletics arsenal. The facility is named for the late Lieutenant Commander Wesley A. Brown, CEC, USN, (Ret.), the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. Brown was born April 3, 1927 in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., where he was Cadet Corps Regimental Commander during his senior year. Nominated for admission by New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Brown entered the Academy in 1945 and graduated in June of 1949. Lt. Cmdr. Brown, a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retired in June 1969 after serving 20 years in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. He holds the Navy Commendation Medal, World War II and Korean War Victory, Korean Service, and American Theater and Antarctic Service Ribbons. Brown passed away in 2012.

“Wesley Brown (above right) represents the service as well as anybody that put on the uniform. What a heroic step, what a courageous move, and what a lasting contribution he made. . . . I think it is appropriate that this field house is named after an individual who has fought a war all his life to improve the Navy and the nation.” Adm. Michael G. Mullen 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

The all-weather MONDO track located northeast of Michelson Hall and Chauvenet Hall is the site of Navy’s outdoor track and field meets. Considered to be one of the premier facilities in the United States, it is named in honor of Vice Admiral Jonas H. Ingram, who commanded the U.S. South Atlantic Fleet during World War II. He was also the Naval Academy Director of Athletics from 1925-1930. The track underwent a $1.7 million renovation in the fall of 2001, with new all-weather surfacing placed on the quarter-mile oval and jump areas. The field area boasts six shot put circles, a discusthrowing circle and a javelin throwing area in the middle of the track. The field has four long/triple jump pits and a “D” zone that allows two high jump areas to be used concurrently. The facility is also equipped with lights and Navy regularly holds ‘twilight’ meets at the facility. Additionally, the facility also features a Daktronics scoreboard, which displays current times and marks during meets.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season.
