2014 SPRINT FOOTBALL
Coaching Career U.S. Naval Academy
Maj. Kavan Lake, USMC
Head Coach, Third Season Florida State (2001) Maj. Kavan O. Lake, USMC was appointed head coach of the Navy sprint football program in the summer of 2012. He is the 29th head coach in the program’s history. During his second year with the Mids in 2013, the squad went 6-1 and finished in second place in the CSFL. Navy led the league in rushing offense, as the Mids rushed for 218.5 yards per game. A sign of the team’s discipline and well-roundness was illustrated in its +8 turnover margin that was best in the league. Defensively, Navy allowed 12.3 points and 216.8 total yards per game, both marks ranked second. As a first-year head coach in 2012, the Mids went 6-1, taking second place in the CSFL. Navy led the league in total defense, yielding an average of just 193 yards per game. The Navy offense ranked second in the conference, averaging 316 yards per game. Lake began his career in the Marine Corps in 1993 and served as an F/A-18 power plant mechanic at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort, S.C., and then MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. He was selected for the Marine Corps Enlisted to Officer Program (MECEP) in 1998 and was later commissioned to 2nd LT in December 2001. After attending flight school in Pensacola, Fla., Lake was winged as a Huey pilot in July 2004 and went on to serve in Iraq on two occasions between 2005-07 with the HMLA-369 “Gunfighters.” Lake brings a strong football background to the Naval Academy as he was a two-year walk-on at Florida State under legendary head coach Bobby Bowden. He was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll on one occasion and went on to graduate from Florida State in 2001. Lake later earned a Master of Science degree in Manpower Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. Prior to being named Navy sprint football head coach, Lake has served as Marine Corps End Strength Planner since May 2010.

2014 Season Preview
The Navy sprint football team under the direction of third-year head coach Major Kavan Lake, USMC, will look to break through and return to the top of the CSFL after finishing 6-1 and runner-up in each of the past two seasons. Beginning its 69th season of play, the Mids are aiming to claim the 36th CSFL title in program history.
“Mihaljevich, Kleintop and Granthom are our three middle lineman and they’ll see most of the reps,” said Lake. “The expectation for them is to fill the gaps, protect the quarterback and open up space for our running backs. The combination of those three will be critical for the success of our offense.”
“We expect to win everything,” said Lake. “Unlike past years where we had worries about certain positions, the best thing that happened to us over the spring and beginning of fall was that a lot of talent came our direction. We looked at 125 players that tried out at the beginning of camp and we picked the best 65 to represent this team and win a championship. Winning the league is our ultimate goal.”
Defense
Offense
The defensive line should be as fierce as ever as the duo of Chris Mershon and Jon Moyle will be back for their senior seasons. Mershon, the CSFL leader in tackles for loss per game (2.58), brings back with him 35 tackles and 8.5 sacks from 2013, while Moyle added 29 tackles and 3.5 sacks during last year. Fellow senior Ben Pope, who is coming off of an All-CSFL second team campaign in 2013, will join Mershon and Moyle on the defensive line.
Defensively, the Mids return three of its top four tacklers and 17 of its 20 total sacks. Last season, Navy ranked second in the CSFL with averages of 12.3 points and 53.7 rushing yards allowed per game.
Returning nearly two-thirds of its offensive production, Navy will be in line to further improve an offense that scored 29.2 points per game last season. The CSFL’s leader in team rushing with 218.5 yards a contest, Lake and the Mids will look to diversify its offense as they have moved some players around and added some height to its receiving ranks.
“Mershon, Moyle and Pope are all back and we moved Blake Papet up from linebacker, where he saw a bit of action as a freshman; he is going to be a force to be reckoned with as a D-lineman” said Lake. “Mershon has always been a superstar and will continue to be a superstar; no surprises there. Moyle has been doing a great job and he’s really been coming along. His leadership will be critical for the team. We expect big things from our D-line.”
Senior quarterback Joe Hampton (624 passing yards, 8 TDs) will lead the offense in his second full season as the starter behind center. In 2013, Hampton threw for 624 yards and connected with his receivers for eight touchdown completions. “Hampton is our most seasoned quarterback and we trust his leadership skills and knowledge of the game,” said Lake. “He’s going to be leading the charge on offense with two young guys backing him up.”
At the linebacker position, the Mids return junior Temple Sloan, who has been a leading tackler for Navy over his first two years of action. After notching 25 stops as a freshman in 2012, he made 29 stops in 2013. The Mids will look to the duo of sophomore Keegan Kush and junior Billy Eisenhauer to step up from understudy roles and thrive as starters.
Navy’s top two running back options, juniors Eric Wellmon (479 rushing yards, 5 TDs, and Corey Garcia (447 rushing yards, 4 TDs) return in 2014, though Lake will split Garcia out as a receiving slot back this season to take advantage of matchups and his team’s depth.
“Sloan is going to be counted on as a veteran linebacker,” said Lake. “Kush was moved into a full-time role at linebacker since last season and we know both of those two guys can really play. They’ll be joined by Eisenhauer, who has come along strongly this preseason. With the three of them being the core of the defense, we’re going to be quite effective.”
“Wellmon is going to lead the running backs as of now, but we have two newcomers that are coming on very strong in sophomore Dane Kozlosky and senior Colby Lederer, as well as a second-year player in James Lieto,” said Lake. “From my position, all four backs are still fighting for the starting position.”
One name that Navy moved from linebacker to defensive back is junior Collin Ascherl, a two-time All-CSFL recognized player. He’ll be joined by returners junior Dan Gilmore, senior Brady Flies and junior Carter Reading. The quartet of Mids will be tasked with replacing Brendan West and Alec McGlaughlin, two perennial All-CSFL talents who both graduated, Jarm, who moved to tight end and sophomore Rex Willis, who will be on the sidelines this fall after suffering a season-ending injury during the preseason.
The team’s new slot back position will be headlined by Garcia, who is a two-time honoree on All-CSFL teams, including a nod on the second team as a sophomore in 2013. “Garcia is a guy we can always trust to make big plays,” said Lake. “We moved him from the running back position because of his size and the injuries that he has sustained in the backfield. If it comes down to it, we know what we have in him as a running back, but we’re looking out for his health, longevity and success. He’s going to give us great quickness and hands in the slot this season.”
“We have a lot of new names there, but we still have Gilmore, Flies and Reading,” said Lake. “We have some newcomers that’ll be moving up the depth chart as the season goes. We also moved Kendall Mackey from wide receiver; he’s tall and fast and likes to tackle people. He’ll be a force in our defensive backfield.”
At the wide receiver position, Navy will have to replace the bulk of its depth as its leaders from 2013, Michael Buck (eight catches for 136 yards) and Tracy Daniels (seven for 114), have both graduated.
“We expect to be number one in defense this year without a doubt,” concluded Lake. Newcomers
“We have a lot of new names in our receiving corps,” noted Lake. “Warren Rooney is our only senior, so he’ll be someone we look to for leadership and production, but we have some young and tall newcomers that are going to be out on the edges. We’ll be looking to have a balanced offense, throwing the ball and running the ball. Having that height on the outside definitely won’t hurt.”
The 2014 version of Navy’s roster will show 24 new names appearing across a variety of positions. There is at least one newcomer listed amongst every one of positional depth charts. The first-year players are not all just freshmen as Colby Lederer and Dane Kozlosky, two candidates for a significant number of snaps at the running back position are a senior and sophomore, respectively.
Of note, all three of Navy’s new wide receivers, freshmen Colin Butler and Sam Shaunak, and junior Michael Byrne are 5’11 or taller. The Mids’ situation at tight end is similar to that of wide receiver, in that their top two threats from 2013, Daniel Meaney (eight for 74) and Dan Shackleton (five for 77) have graduated. To help lessen the losses of Meaney and Shackleton, Navy will turn to a familiar face to plug in at tight end, senior Alec Jarm, a three-year member of the defensive backfield.
“Colby and Dane will be big for us at the running back position,” said Lake. “A strong group of new sophomores, juniors and seniors is proof that our veterans’ recruitment in the hall this past spring was really successful.”
“We needed to improve our speed at tight end so we moved Jarm from safety and he’s shown us some fantastic potential,” said Lake. “He’s catching the ball and battling for yards after contact, just like you’d expect out of any good tight end.”
“We have some freshmen that should make their presence known early on,” said Lake. “Colin Butler at wide receiver is going to be huge for us. We expect that Devin Graves will be an asset for us at defensive back, though we’ve yet to see him in game situations. A third plebe to watch is Alex Oldham, who we got from the `big boys.’ He was a great catch for us as he’s lost the weight and he’s very smart football player. He’ll see a lot of time on the field.”
The Mids will also look to incorporate 15 freshmen into their game planning this season.
One of Navy’s most seasoned units will be its offensive line, especially the interior of the line as seniors Brian Mihaljevich and Jarrett Kleintop and junior Michael Granthom will start as the center and two guard positions.
