Nadia Ste-Marie enters her second year as head coach of the fledgling Navy women’s golf program in 2013-14.

only a matter of time before Nadia will have us competing for championships. She is a winner on and off the course.”

on to play in the 1991 and 1992 Women’s British Open Championships and the 1996, 1997 and 1998 U.S. Women’s Open.

During the introductory 2012-13 season, Ste-Marie led the Midshipmen to a third-place finish at the inaugural Patriot League Championships, despite having the services of no recruited athletes. The finish showed that Navy will become a force in the Patriot League in no time at all, as freshman Renata Bucher led the Midshipmen in stroke average, while four of the six competing golfers will return for Navy’s second varsity season.

“For the past 13 years I have watched and admired what Navy Men’s Golf coach Pat Owen and his team have accomplished. It is an honor to be part of the United States Naval Academy and its traditions. I am excited to pioneer the Navy women’s golf program and look forward to building a top quality team,” said Ste-Marie.

She was the qualifying medalist for the 1997 U.S. Women’s Open, and recorded 19 top-10 professional finishes including titles at the du Maurier Ltd. Series in London in 1993 and at the 2006 LPGA TC&P North East Sectional Championship.

Ste-Marie has also hit the ground running on the recruiting trail, landing commitments from several student-athletes that will help Navy continue its push to the top of the Patriot League. Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced on November 5, 2012, that women’s golf will be elevated to a varsity sport and that Nadia Ste-Marie will serve as the head coach. “I am extremely pleased Coach Ste-Marie will work at the NAAA to elevate our women’s golf club team to varsity status. She is a premier athlete, professionally accomplished on the LPGA level, a terrific teacher of the game and well respected in Annapolis,” said Navy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. “Fielding women’s varsity golf will be an immediate logistical challenge, but it’s

During her time at Hawai’i, she competed in the 1985 and 1987 U.S. Women’s Amateur Tournaments and won a pair of amateur tournaments in Hawai’i in 1985. After graduating from Florida State, Ste-Marie turned pro on the LPGA tour in 1990 and went

Kelly Gerlach Assistant Coach | Southern Illinois (2007) 2nd Year at Navy

Gerlach will enter her second season as the assistant coach of the Navy women’s golf program. During the introductory 2012-13 season, Gerlach helped the Midshipmen to a third-place finish at the inaugural Patriot League Championships, despite having the services of no recruited athletes. The finish showed that Navy will become a force in the Patriot League in no time at all, as freshman Renata Bucher led the Midshipmen in stroke average, while four of the six competing golfers will return for Navy’s second varsity season. Gerlach has also hit the ground running on the recruiting trail, landing commitments from several student-athletes that will help Navy continue its push to the top of the Patriot League. “I am excited to have Kelly join our program. She brings strong experience from Southern Illinois University and her enthusiasm and passion for the game will be a great asset to the Navy Women’s Golf program,” said head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. “I am excited and humbled for the opportunity to be part of the United States Naval Academy women’s golf program. I am eager to be part of the traditions, customs and honor of the Academy and look forward to helping Coach Ste-Marie build a program that is both competitive on the golf course and maintains the high level of academic leadership expected at the Naval Academy,” said Gerlach. Gerlach, a Sparta, Ill., native, is a 2007 graduate of Southern Illinois University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration. While at SIU, she served as a two-time captain of the women’s golf team, leading the Salukis to the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference title

and a berth in the NCAA Championships. As a freshman in 2004, Gerlach won the Missouri Valley Conference individual title and earned All-MVC honors all four seasons of competition. She was a two-time Academic All-American (2007 and 2008) and was a three-time member of the Missouri Valley Conference All-Scholar Team. She was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team, which honored the top 20 golfers in conference history. Following her career at SIU, Gerlach began a career in public policy that included positions in both state and federal government as well as the private sector, which precipitated her move to Washington, D.C. Along with duties as assistant coach for the women’s program, Gerlach will also serve as an assistant professional at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club. Kelly and her husband, Ben Hovland, reside in Washington, D.C.

Ste-Marie held seven different professional tour membership cards, competing professionally for 10 years on the LPGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Tour, Canadian PGA and the FUTURES Tour, among others. Ste-Marie is currently an assistant golf professional at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club, a position she has held since 1999. She has also served as the Director of Golf at the Sherwood Forest Boys and Girls Summer Camp and has been an LPGA Teaching & Club Professional since 2000. She was inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Ste-Marie and her husband, Bill McKeon, are the parents of two sons, Kyle (13) and Noah, (10) and a daughter, Taylor (5). The family resides in Annapolis.

2013-14 NAVY woMEN’S golf

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 80 percent of its teams posting an APR score of 985 or higher in the most recent data, and 71 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2012-13 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

Stephen Cooksey earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors following Navy’s title at the Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships.

I The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball and baseball APR. I 71 Patriot League teams, and 74 from full-member institutions, received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for finishing in the top-10 percent of their sport in APR data.
