Karen Boyle

Year-by-Year Record at Navy

Head Coach • 28th Season 28th season at Navy Bowling Green ‘79 Boyle is in her 28th year at the helm of the Navy women’s cross country team, she has led the Mids to four Patriot League Championships in the last seven seasons. The Mids posted a perfect 5-0 record in 2013, including a third straight win over Army. In 27 years has Navy’s head coach, Boyle has guided her teams to a 135-21 (.865) record. Navy finished first in three meets in 2013 season, including again winning annual Salty Dog Invitational. After defeating Army, 24-31, the Mids fell short of their third consecutive Patriot League title, finishing third. During Boyle’s tenure, seven Navy runners have competed at the NCAA Division I Championship. Boyle’s first national championship qualifier came in 1992 with Kerry O’Neill, followed by Jackie Hayes in 1995, Rebecca Cline in 1997, Melissa Foon in 2000, Amy Watson in 2008, Palacio in 2011 and Beveridge in 2012. For the second consecutive year in 2012, a Mid claimed the league’s individual crown as AnnieNorah Beveridge took first place overall. Like Patriot League champion Jess Palacio in 2011, Beveridge also went on to earn All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors and receive a bid to compete in the NCAA Championships. In 2011 Jess Palacio had one of the best years ever by a Navy cross country runner. She placed first in four meets, including at the Patriot League Championship, and earned her second consecutive All-Mid Atlantic Region honor. Boyle guided the Mids to a pair of invitational titles in 2010 as Navy finished first at both the Lehigh Invitational and the Great American Festival. Palacio won four individual titles in the fall of `10 and became a first-team All-Patriot League honoree by placing third at the conference championship. In 2007, Boyle led Navy to a share of its first Patriot League championship, before claiming the title outright in 2008. Boyle was named Patriot League Coach of the Year on both occasions. Boyle has led the Mids to significant honors on both the Division II (1987-1990) and Division I (1991-present) levels. In Navy’s last-four years of Division II competition, Boyle coached the Mids to three-straight undefeated seasons and four-consecutive top-five finishes in the NCAA Division II Championship, with five runners garnering All-America honors. Boyle was named Eastern Region Coach of the Year in three-straight seasons (1988-90). Boyle guided the program into the Division I ranks in 1991, and the Mids immediately achieved success by capturing the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. In 1997 and 2007, Boyle was named Navy’s Fall Coach of the Year after she led Navy to an undefeated season. As a coach with the track team, she guided Marty Shue to a title in the indoor 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Championship. In 1995, Boyle was selected as team leader for the USA Ekiden International Marathon in Beijing, China. She was also selected to help rewrite the level I track & field certification curriculum at the USA Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1999, she received her C.S.C.S. certification as a nationally accredited certified strength and conditioning specialist. The summer of 2001 saw Boyle serve as an assistant track & field coach for Team USA in the Deaf Track & Field World Games, held in Rome, Italy. Boyle, a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green, received her degree in physical education and earned her master’s degree in athletic administration and recreation from her alma mater in 1982. Athletically, she competed in both track and lacrosse, specializing in the 400 and 4x400-meter relay on the track and was a leading scorer for the Falcons’ lacrosse squad. Her coaching career began at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where she coached the women’s cross country and track & field teams from 1984-86, developing two national champions and nine All-Americans. Boyle is a tenured professor in the Naval Academy’s Physical Education Department, teaching personal conditioning, rock climbing, kayaking and triathlon training. Boyle also participates in road races and triathlons. Administratively, Boyle served as the president of the NCAA Division I Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (1999-2001), as well as a committee member on the USA Track & Field Coaching Education Board and the United States Track Coaches Association Long Distance Advisory Board.

Season Outlook

Navy women’s cross country was selected to finish third in the 2014 Patriot League Preseason Poll, announced by the league office Wednesday. Defending league champion Boston University was unanimously picked to repeat by the league’s opposing head coaches and sports information directors. Navy’s five-meet regular-season slate will include two home meets at the USNA Cross Country Course, hosting the Salty Dog Invitational and the annual Star Meet with Army. “Our schedule gives us a lot of opportunity to rest and recovery between meets, especially the Salty Dog Invite with a ton of uphill and downhill areas,” Navy women’s cross country coach Karen Boyle said. “The two week gap between each meet will help give our girls more time to have strong, impact training to prepare for the next race and compete at the highest level.” Navy begins the 2014 schedule with its first tune-up meet at the Mount St. Mary’s 5k Duals on Aug. 29. The Mids have gone undefeated against the competition in this meet the last four seasons. Navy will then host the annual Salty Dog Invitational on Sept. 13. It will be the 13th consecutive year the Mids host the meet and look to grab their fourth-straight title and seventh overall. The Mids then travel to the west coast to compete in the Stanford Invite on Sept. 27. Following its west coast trip, Navy will travel to the heavily competitive Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 4. Navy hosts archrival Army on Oct. 18 in the annual Star Meet. The Mids are 17-11 all-time against the Black Knights and have won the last three meets. Rising senior Annie-Norah Beveridge has finished first against Army in back-to-back meets. Lehigh will host the 2014 Patriot League Championship on Nov. 1. The Midshipmen will head to State College, Pennsylvania on Nov. 15 for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. The top two teams at the regional championship will each earn one of 18 automatic bids to the NCAA Championship held on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had more than 93 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 92 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2013-14 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: I The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball APR. I 81 Patriot League teams recorded perfect graduation success rates and 92 earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in APR. I More than 93 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR. I Patriot League teams won NCAA Tournament games in seven different sports, with American winning twice to advance to the Round of 16 in volleyball. I League squads also won NCAA first-round or regional contests in football (Fordham), men’s soccer (Navy), women’s soccer (Boston University), women’s lacrosse (Loyola), softball (Boston University) and baseball (Bucknell). I Navy won the overall Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the second time in three years, while Army took first place on the men’s side and Boston University claimed the women’s title in its inaugural season. I Fifteen student-athletes earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football), Bucknell’s Joe Meyer (Men’s Soccer) and Navy’s Elizabeth Hoerner (Women’s Soccer). I Thirty-five student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. I There were 2,450 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14, including 128 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0. I American women’s basketball standout Alexis Dobbs and Navy women’s soccer star Elizabeth Hoerner and women’s rowing student-athlete Katherine Ashton each earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Dobbs and Hoerner were later named the Patriot League’s nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. I Fordham football and Loyola men and women’s lacrosse each finished in the top 10 of national polls, while Navy men’s soccer and American volleyball and field hockey each placed in the top 25 of their sport’s final national rankings. I Navy’s Jay Stell placed third in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, matching the best-ever finish for a Patriot League male and earning first-team All-America honors. I Navy’s Tom Duvall came in the top 10 in the 500 freestyle at the NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship to earn All-America honors, and was one of four Patriot Leaguers to compete in an individual event at either the NCAA Men or Women’s Championship.
