Larry Bock
I I I 2015 NAVY VOLLYEBALL I I I
Fifth Season
Penn State ‘71
Larry Bock, who has accrued more victories than any other volleyball coach in NCAA history, enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Mids in the fall of 2015. Bock led the Mids to one of the program’s best seasons in nearly a decade in 2014. Selected to place fifth in the Patriot League’s Pre-Season Poll, the Mids won a school-record 11 league matches to end the year in third place. It was the team’s highest placement since tying for second in 2005 and gave the Mids a winning league season in consecutive years for the first time since doing so in 2004 and 2005. Navy also attained its first overall winning record (14-12) since 2008, won both regular season matches against Army for the first time since 2005 and swept the Black Knights in a match for the first time since 1997. The Mids also qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since seven seasons. Hired in January 2011 after the Mids had totaled four league wins and 13 victories in all in the previous two seasons, Bock’s impact on the program was felt in just his second campaign. The Mids would finish the 2012 season with a 7-7 record and place fifth in the league, just one victory out of a tie for fourth place and the final berth in the Patriot League Tournament. That six-win increase from one season to the next is the largest one-year improvement for victories in league history. Additionally, Navy’s placement in the league was the highest for the Mids since tying for fifth place in 2008. Navy also stopped a 15-match losing streak in league road outings by finishing the year with a 3-4 mark in league matches played away from Annapolis. Helping the Mids to their improved record was their winning five home matches on the year after Navy had won a total of six home matches in the previous two seasons combined, as well as winning three true road matches on the season after having posted a 3-20 mark in road matches played over the course of the 2010-11 seasons. Navy’s ascension continued in 2013. The Mids posted a 9-7 record in the Patriot League to finish the year with the team’s first winning league campaign since the 2007 season. The Mids were alive for a berth in the four-team playoffs until the final weekend of the season and ended the year in fifth place. Additionally, Navy’s 13 wins on the year were the most for the program since 2008. Bock arrived at Navy having compiled an overall record of 1,352-283-4 (82.6%) in 40 seasons as a collegiate volleyball head coach. That tally included a mark of 1,252-192 (86.7%) in 34 seasons as the head coach of the women’s program at Juniata and a mark of 100-91-4 (52.3%) in six years as the head coach of the Juniata men’s team.

Head Coach
Juniata’s women’s teams won at least 30 matches in each of the last 31 seasons and surpassed 40 victories on 10 different occasions during this span. The Eagles compiled a staggering 358-14 record (96.2%) against conference foes, and last dropped a match against a conference opponent in 1983. And while Juniata competes on the NCAA’s Division III level, Bock’s teams posted a 67-23 record against NCAA Division I programs during his tenure at the school. Bock guided the Eagles to each of the 30 NCAA D-III Tournaments that have been contested. Juniata won NCAA titles in 2004 and 2006, appeared in a total of eight national championship matches and advanced to the semifinal match of the national tournament in 14 of his last 15 seasons and 25 times in all. Juniata posted a 94-36 record in the NCAA Tournament under Bock. Individually, Bock’s players garnered 65 All-America certificates, four American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player-of-the-Year awards and one National Rookie-of-the-Year laurel. Additionally, five Juniata players received College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America accolades, two were selected as the organization’s Academic All-American of the Year and two received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. On the men’s side, Juniata won a trio of Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association divisional titles under Bock, who himself was tabbed as the EIVA D-III Coach of the Year in both 1993 and ‘94. Bock’s record in his 38 seasons as a women’s volleyball coach is 1296-258 (83.4%) and his record in his 44 seasons as a collegiate volleyball coach is 1396349-4 (79.9%). He has won 157 more matches than the coach with the next highest tally of victories and has recorded 64 more wins than the second-place coach on the women’s side of the sport. Additionally, his winning percentage as a women’s coach ranks 13th among all NCAA coaches who have at least 10 seasons of experience. Bock has received nearly every possible coaching award available over the course of his career He has been tabbed as the AVCA (D-III) National Coach of the Year five times and as the organization’s region coach of the year on nine occasions. Bock also was a member of the AVCA’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class (2003), was elected as one of the two NCAA Silver Anniversary (D-III) Team Head Coaches (2006), received the AVCA Founders Award for service to the sport (2000), garnered the USA Volleyball Trailblazer Award (2006) and was selected as the 2009 recipient of the All-Time Great Coaches Award by USA Volleyball. He also served as Juniata’s athletic director for over 15 years and was named the Division III Central Region Athletic Director of the Year in 2005.

I I I 2015 NAVY VOLLYEBALL I I I Assistant Coach Steph Strauss Assistant Coach Miami (Fla.) ‘06 Second Season
The 2015 season will be Kait Kozak’s fifth year as a member of the Navy coaching staff. Kozak served as the head coach at Western New England College for two seasons prior to arriving at Navy in the spring of 2011. She guided the NCAA Division III program located in Springfield, Mass., to a 37-30 record in her two years with the team. Kozak led the Golden Bears to a 27-10 record during her initial 2009 season, a tally that set the school record for the most wins posted in one season. Originally tabbed to place sixth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference at the start of the season, the Golden Bears won the regular season title with a 9-1 record before placing second in the conference tournament. Kozak herself was selected as the conference coach of the year that season. A native of Huntingdon, Pa., Kozak is a 2006 graduate of Miami (Fla.). The defensive specialist lettered in each of her four years at the school and served as the co-captain of the Hurricanes during her senior season. Kozak also garnered multiple academic all-conference laurels and received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship as a member of the team. After graduating from Miami with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in sport administration, she served as an assistant coach at Springfield College for two seasons while attaining her Master’s of Education Degree in counseling psychology (athletic counseling concentration). After leaving Springfield she spent one year as a studentathlete development intern at Oregon before accepting her most recent position at Western New England College.

I I I 2015 NAVY VOLLYEBALL I I I
Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 201516 season. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: H 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those squads earning perfect scores. H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally. H 92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate. H Eleven student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Ellen Bradford (Swimming and Diving), American’s Jen Dumiak (Women’s Basketball) and Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football). H Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. H Buffone and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively. H Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. H There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0. H Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Women’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soccer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner.
PATRIOT LEAGUE
H Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey). H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years. H The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston University repeated as women’s champion. H Loyola won a pair of NCAA Tournament games to become the first Patriot League women’s lacrosse team to advance to the quarterfinal round, and also finished in the top 10 of the IWLCA Coaches Poll. H Twenty-four Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans in team sports, including Navy’s Joseph Greenspan earning first-team honors in men’s soccer. H Four Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler became the League’s first female All-American since 2005. H Lehigh’s Ryan Mahalsky became the first Patriot Leaguer since 200708 and sixth all-time to compete at the NCAA Championships for both cross country and outdoor track and field in the same season. H Bucknell’s Emma Levendoski competed in both the 100-meter and 200meter backstroke at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship. H A League record nine student-athletes were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft entering the 2015 season, with Army West Point’s John Glesener, Loyola’s Nikko Pontrello and Colgate’s Ryan Walsh among the top 11 picks. H Navy’s Joseph Greenspan and Boston University’s Dominique Badji were both selected in the first four rounds of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft. H Five Patriot Leaguers were taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft, with Lehigh’s Justin Pacchioli and Navy’s Stephen Moore each selected in the 10th round.
