Entering his third full season as head coach, Stanicic was elevated from interim head coach on Dec. 20, 2013. A 12-year veteran of the Navy Water Polo program, he has filled roles as a volunteer, assistant and associate head coach for the Midshipmen since 1988. In 2015, Stanicic’s second full season as head coach, he led the Mids to a 15-13 record. Stanicic guided Navy to a third place showing in the CWPA Southern Championship with a thrilling 15-13 overtime victory versus Bucknell. Honorable Mention All-American Carl Dowzicky rounded out his standout time in Annapolis with 94 points in 2015 and 233 for his career. Carpenter Warren and Robert Sutherland also closed out strong four-year careers for the Mids with 220 and 199 points, respectively. In the spring of 2016, Sutherland was selected to participate in the USA Water Polo National League. In his first season as the head coach of the program in 2014, Stanicic led the Mids to a 19-12 record and nine wins over the final 11 matches of the year. Spearheaded by Honorable Mention All-American Thomas Patterson, Stanicic and the Mids finished in third place in both the CWPA Southern and CWPA Championship tournaments. After serving for eight seasons as an associate and assistant coach under Mike Schofield, Navy’s all-time winningest coach, Stanicic was named the interim head coach on Sept. 26, 2013 after Schofield retired. He turned the Mids season around and led the team to an 11-6 record and its 14th CWPA Southern Championship in program history. In recognition of the program’s success Stanicic was named the 2013 CWPA Southern Division Coach of the Year. Honorable Mention All-America nods to Carl Dowzicky and Carpenter Warren rounded off the 2013 year for Stanicic and the Mids. During the 2012 season, Stanicic helped guide the Midshipmen to a 23-6 record and a CWPA Southern Division regular-season championship. The Midshipmen bolted out to a 20-2 record in 2012, one of its best starts in school history, and scored a whopping 467 goals, an average of 16.1 goals per game. In 2011, Navy recorded a 24-7 record and reached the CWPA Eastern Championship game for the league-record seventh straight time. Stanicic helped the team to a 25-7 record four years ago and the CWPA Southern Division title and an appearance in the CWPA Eastern title game for the sixth straight year during the 2010 season. Five years ago, Stanicic assisted the team to a 22-9 record and the CWPA regular-season co- championship and tournament title. Stanicic served as an interim coach for eight games during the 2007 season, leading the Mids to a 7-1 mark during those games, while starting the team off on its school record 19-game winning streak. He also filled in for a pair of wins in the 2011 season against Connecticut College and Harvard, while head coach Mike Schofield was in California with another Navy squad. In 2013, splitsquad action saw Stanicic lead the Mids at the Princeton Invitational for three games. The three head coaching stints gave Stanicic a 9-3 coaching record. After immigrating to the United States, he briefly
volunteered as a coach for the Fordham University men’s water polo team. After relocating to Annapolis, Stanicic joined the Naval Academy Aquatics Club as a coach. He also volunteered with the men’s varsity team as an assistant coach, particularly in 1988, helping the Mids to win the Eastern Championship and participate at the NCAA Tournament. He continued in his role as volunteer coach with varying degrees of engagement. Since 1988, coaching the Navy goalkeepers has been his specialty, producing a number of All-East and All-American selectees. Throughout the years following 1988, Stanicic continued to work with the Naval Academy Aquatic Club and led both men’s and women’s teams to 14 national championships including the Women’s Open in 1999 and multiple-age group titles in 20 and under, 18 and under, 16 and under and 14 and under competitions. Who We Are?
The Collegiate Water Polo Association is a non-profit athletic conference comprised of four-year colleges and universities. Unlike other conferences, the CWPA is comprised of both varsity and collegiate club programs which compete for an National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Collegiate Club (NCCC) Championship. A member conference of the NCAA, the purpose of the Association is to serve its membership through a variety of ways, including the coordination of a competitive schedule. As a non-profit 501 (c)-3 organization, it is also a charitable entity, capable of receiving donations that are tax deductible. All gifts of this kind may be sent to the office, with an acknowledgment returned to you for your tax records.

2015 CWPA Championship

The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow. In mid-2016, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) informed the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) that the league’s division into the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NEWPC) and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) was accepted by the organization. The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo conferences will continue to be administered by the Collegiate Water Polo Association office in a format similar to the Division III Middle Atlantic Conference which oversees two conferences (Freedom, Commonwealth) under one umbrella. The division into two conferences is applicable in only men’s competition as the CWPA will continue to be the moniker by which the league’s women’s varsity teams will compete under during the 2017 season. Due to the separation into different conferences, the CWPA Championship (formerly known as the Eastern Championship) ceases following over 40-years of continuous competition.
