Kip Simons Head Coach First Year at Navy Ohio State ‘94

Kip Simons, a decorated head coach at Air Force and Olympic performer, was announced on Sept. 14, 2015 as the new head gymnastics coach at Navy by Chet Gladchuk, Naval Academy Director of Athletics. Simons comes to Annapolis after 10 years as the head coach of a Falcons’ team that reached new heights nationally and became a perennial top-10 program. “Kip is unquestionably one of the finest gymnastics coaches in the sport at any level,” remarked Gladchuk. “He has proven to be at the top of his game every step of his remarkable career. We are extremely fortunate that he and his family have chosen to come East, continue his legacy of excellence in Annapolis and join a program that remains focused on being fully committed to successfully compete at the Division I level. His appointment further reinforces our commitment to provide the midshipmen with outstanding coaches and educators who are not only proven winners, but most importantly fully understand our mission at large. I am confident he will do a remarkable job continuing the respected traditions of success so effectively established within Navy gymnastics by the legendary Coach Sho Fukushima.” “I am honored to be selected as the head coach of the gymnastics program at the Naval Academy,” said Simons. “This program was carried on the shoulders of great coaches such as Lewis Mang, Chet Phillips, Bill Savering, Peter Kormann and Sho Fukushima and I look forward to carrying the torch. “Spending the past 10 years building the program at the Air Force Academy, I fully respect and embrace our mission of developing officers of character to lead this great nation. I look forward to working with our leadership to create the synergistic environment required to maximize the development of my midshipmen both on and off the field of competition.” An internationally renown gymnast since 1988, Simons was a four-year member of the United States Senior National team and competed on two world championship teams, as well as with the gold medal winning teams at the 1994 Goodwill Games and 1995 Pan-American Games. His competitive career culminated with a spot on the 1996 United States Olympic team. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Simons was a member of the U.S. team that finished fifth overall.

2008 (all-around and rings) and Tim Wang in 2014 (pommel horse). In USAG National Championship competition, Simons and Air Force won six straight team titles from 2010 through 2015 and collected 28 individual event titles. Amongst the service academies, the Falcons won each of the last six meetings at the annual All-Academy Championship Meet between Air Force, Army and Navy. In recognition of his team’s success Simons has been the recipient of four CGA Collegiate Division National Head Coach of the Year awards (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), as well as two NCAA Regional Head of the Year (2008, 2010) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year (2006, 2014) honors, respectively. A 1994 graduate from Ohio State University, Simons earned numerous honors throughout his four years with the Buckeyes, including Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the Nissen-Emery Award, as the nation’s top senior gymnast. He was a four-year member of the All-Big 10 and earned conference titles on the parallel bars (1992, 1994), still rings (1992) and high bar (1993). Simons garnered two NCAA All-America certificates during his time in Columbus. In September 2006, the Varsity “O” Association inducted him into Ohio State’s Athletic Hall of Fame. For his work and success throughout the sport, Simons was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in the summer of 2010. He was joined in the 2010 induction class by 1996 Olympic team gold medalist Dominique Moceanu, 1992 Olympic team bronze medalist Wendy Bruce-Martin, 2000 Olympian Jennifer Parilla, two-time U.S. Men’s Olympic team head coach Kevin Mazeika and 2000 U.S. Olympic trampoline coach Robert Null.

After retiring from international competition, Simons moved into collegiate coaching at the University of California in 2001. In five seasons from 2001 to 2005, the Bears twice finished in third place at the NCAA Championships and had four individuals win national championships. Simons was named Associate Head Coach of the Bears for his final season in Berkeley. Beginning with the 2005-06 season, Simons started a 10-year reign in charge of the gymnastics program at the United States Air Force Academy. A fivetime USAG Varsity Head Coach of the Year, the Falcons thrived under his leadership and expertise. In both 2012 and 2014, Air Force earned rankings as high as eighth nationally. Simons took a team to the NCAA National Qualifying Meet and saw 15 gymnasts advance into the NCAA Championships in each of his final five years in Colorado Springs. On three occasions under his tutelage Falcon athletes earned NCAA All-American nods, Greg Stine twice in

Craig Holt Assistant Coach 17th Year at Navy Syracuse ‘95

Craig Holt enters his 17th season with the Navy program. After 16 years as an assistant coach with Dr. Sho Fukushima, he stays on as an assistant to Kip Simons. Holt brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in the sport of gymnastics as both a former athlete and assistant coach. “Navy is a program built on maximizing individual achievement for the good of the team’s success,” Holt said. “As a team, our training is intense, consistent and scientific. This model helps us develop a strong base of physical gymnastics skill, mental preparation and a strong character.” In two of the last three seasons, Holt has helped three athletes qualify for and compete in the NCAA Championships. This past spring at the University of Oklahoma, Jonny Tang was an entrant in the all-around competition, while Mitchell Larios took on the nation’s best on the vault. In 2013, Chris Junghans finished 12th overall in the all-around competition and just missed placing in the top 10 by 0.4 points. The 2014 season concluded with Holt assisting an eight-man crew of Midshipmen into action at the NCAA Championship Qualifying Meet at the University of Michigan. Eight participants marked a new program record. Prior to Junghans, Holt helped coach Andrew Faulk to his spectacular 2012 season, which included a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2011, Holt was named ECAC Tri-Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped guide Dylan Parrott and Andrew Faulk to the NCAA Championships. In 2009, Holt assisted in helping the Midshipmen to a memorable season, as they finished with an impressive 15-4 record and a N-Star victory at Army. In addition, the Mids won their second-straight All-Academy Championship, placed second at the ECAC Championship and advanced as a team to the NCAA Qualifying Meet for the first time in program history.

His efforts in the gym have not gone unrecognized, as he was named the 2007 NCAA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year, 2006 and ’08 USAG Collegiate Division Assistant Coach of the Year, 2007 and ‘11 ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year and 2007 CGA Regional Co-Assistant Coach of the Year. During the summer of 2005, Holt coached the United States team in the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Holt guided the United States to a second-place team finish with gold medal performances in the floor exercise and pommel horse. In addition to his coaching duties, Holt also served as a judge at the Maccabiah Games. Holt came to the Academy after serving as an assistant coach for one season at William & Mary and two years at his alma mater, Syracuse. Holt’s commitment to the Navy program in and out of the gym was recognized in 2003 as he was named the ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year. “I would like all of our athletes to leave the Naval Academy knowing that they have the tools to not only meet, but exceed all that is expected of them,” he added. “They should have a strong sense of confidence and accomplishment as they begin their careers.” As a gymnast, Holt was an NCAA finalist on the rings in 1994. He is a 1995 graduate of Syracuse, where he earned a degree in physical education. Holt earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Syracuse in the summer of 2002.

SEASON PREVIEW While the Navy gymnastics program has undergone a change of leadership at its head coaching position, a large 10-man senior class looks to continue the team’s improving chances of securing an NCAA Championship bid in 2016. One year after finishing one spot shy of collecting the automatic bid at the ECAC Championships, the team welcomes 1996 U.S. Olympian and former Air Force head coach Kip Simons to take over the reigns following the retirement of Dr. Sho Fukushima, who led the program for 24 years.

competition before re-joining his teammates in the fall of 2015. The quartet of Zac Ceroli, Michael Dorsey, David Frick and Connor Gonzales all provided good depth to the team in 2015 and look to do the same in 2016. Ceroli, the ECAC’s 2015 Most Improved Gymnast, was a regular in the vaulting lineup, while Dorsey did the same on the pommel horse. Frick vaulted on 10 separate occasions as a junior, in addition to participating in the majority of those meets on the parallel bars and high bar. Gonzales recorded eight scores on the rings and six other marks on the parallel bars in 2015.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the buy-in from the program, the buy-in from the athletes, the support from the top, all the way down,” exclaimed Simons. “These athletes are hungry. They’re thoroughbreds and they want to be led. I’m just so excited to be here and to be that man to lead these young men. “We know it’s all about Army and we’re going to get the job done on Feb. 6. After Army, the next goal is conference competition. The ECAC’s give us an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. The team is hungry for the NCAA’s; it’s been 24 years since we’ve won the conference title. The team knows this is its ticket and for those 10 seniors, they want to close out their career on a high note at the NCAA Championships.” Navy concluded its 2015 season with seven individuals competing at the NCAA Qualifying Meet and two, senior Mitchell Larios and junior Jonny Tang, earning their way into the NCAA Championship competition. Both those athletes, as well as fellow qualifying meet competitors, senior Eric Morrison and sophomore Noah Beeman return for the Mids in 2016. 10-Man Senior Class Larios and Morrison are just two of a senior class that accounts for 55 percent (10-of18) of Navy’s entire roster. Coming off an injury in 2015, Eric Poletti is charged with leading the team as the squad’s captain in 2016. He’ll be joined on the comeback trail by Connor Westrick, Josh Gong and Jacob Moses. Westrick, a leader on the pommel horse, was sidelined for the majority of 2015 before coming back late for postseason action, while Gong was unable to compete for the entire season due to injuries. The fourth senior re-emerging into the forefront of Navy’s rotational starting lineup is Moses. A two-time letterwinner, he took the calendar year off from the program and

All-Around Simons’ take: “I expect Jonny Tang and Noah Beeman to be neck-and-neck throughout the year in the all-around. Both are seasoned gymnasts and will carry a strong role in the team’s overall performance.” The all-around duo participated at the NCAA Qualifying Meet with Tang competing in the entire six-event rotation, while Beeman specialized in the floor exercise and high bar at the meet. During the regular season, Tang was the seventh-ranked all-around gymnast in terms of national qualifying average (NQA) with an 83.650 mark. The highlight of his season was a first-place finish at the USAG Collegiate Championships. While Tang posted 11 scores in the all-around, Beeman used his freshman season to fine-tune a variety of skills for all-around competition as he consistently was a member of three-to-four event lineups per meet. He competed in the all-around twice in 2015, versus William & Mary and at Army. Floor Exercise Simons’ take: “We’re going to look towards the senior leadership of Mitch Larios and Eric Morrison on floor exercise. Jonny Tang will also be a strong contributor on this event.” Larios consistently posted scores between 14.5 and 14.8 for a national qualifiying average (NQA) of 14.688 last season. He posted a season-high 15.05 in the individual finals at the USAG Collegiate Championships. Tang was the highest nationally ranked individual with a 14.838 qualifying average. His season-high was a 15.15 at a regular season meet at Springfield.

SEASON PREVIEW Morrison, Beeman and sophomore Andy Jones should round out the team’s regular starting lineup to begin the year. Pommel Horse Simons’ take: “The pommel horse is the most difficult event of the six out there. I’m pleased that we have a very skilled group of gymnasts that will compete for us on the pommel horse this season led by three seniors, Eric Morrison, Connor Westrick and Michael Dorsey. They’ll provide great scores for us as a team, as well as rank highly nationally.” Morrison earned his way into the NCAA Qualifying Meet last spring with a 14.663 NQA. Twice in 2015, he came through with a season-high 14.85 score. Due to injuries, Westrick was only able to post five results with a 14.6 at Springfield College leading the way. After not competing in regular season action his first two years, Dorsey stepped up to the plate last season and started in nine separate meets with a 13.9 at the ECAC Championships highlighting his results. Per their all-around acumen Tang and Beeman should be strong contributors, as well on the pommel horse in 2016. Rings Simons’ take: “Senior team captain Eric Poletti is going to get the job done for us on the rings. Junior Wyatt LaPointe is another strong ring athlete, who’ll show strongly for the team. One gymnast who was off the radar last year, but should come on strong this season is senior Josh Gong. He has explosive strength and will be secret weapon on the rings.” The Mids will see some of the largest turnover on the rings as three National Qualifying Meet competitors, Joshua Steves, Thomas Goodell and Eric Viscardi have all graduated. The return of Poletti and Gong, as well as the growth of LaPointe are set to lead the way. In 2014, Poletti appeared in six meets with a season-high score of 14.15 at William & Mary. Gong posted a similar statline in 2014 as he saw action in five different competitions with a season-high 13.6 coming at William & Mary. LaPointe was a member of Navy’s starting lineup seven times in 2015 with three scores of 13.75 or better. He began the season with a sixth-place finish in the individual finals of the West Point Open with a 13.9 result. Connor Gonzales and Jonny Tang were also regularly competing members in ring competitions last spring with Gonzales posting a 13.7 NQA and Tang a 13.688 with an accompanying season-high of 14.6. Simons notes that freshmen Christian Correale and Mitchell Fornek are contenders for time on the rings. “Christian has done an excellent job developing on the rings and will contribute to the team early in the lineup, while Mitchell is grinding each day to bust into the lineup. I expect both their efforts and growth to pay off big for us as the season moves along.” The freshmen will augment their time on the rings with potential action on the parallel bars for Correale and the high bar for Fornek.

Vault Simons’ take: “A national competitor and top-ranked athlete, Mitch Larios is our leader on the vault. Mitch does a hand-spring double-front, one of the hardest vaults done in the country.” A top scorer meet-in and meet-out for the Midshipmen in 2015, Larios earned his way into the NCAA Championship Meet with a 15.2-point performance on the vault in qualifying action. He eventually finished 20th overall with a score of 14.75 in the championship. Amongst returning athletes, Tang (14.05-NQA), David Frick (14.013) and Zac Ceroli (13.925) will look to give the vault lineup an experienced presence. Jones should round out Navy’s starting five on the vault. Parallel Bars Simons’ take: “Again the senior class will play a role in leading the way as Mitch Larios, Connor Westrick and Connor Gonzales are great performers. We’re also going to look for Jonny Tang to step up and help us on the parallel bars.” A competitor at the Qualifying Meet last spring, Larios recorded a 14.225 NQA on the strength of seven scores of 14.0 or better during the season. A 14.55 mark in the team portion of the ECAC Championships was a season-high, as well as best of the day during that meet. Tang was the second-highest scoring Mid on average last season with a 14.113 NQA and seven scores of 14.0 or better, as well. Injuries and inconsistencies hampered Westrick and Gonzales in 2015, with Westrick registering a p-bar score only once and a season-high 13.75 at the USAG Championships highlighting Gonzales’ campaign. Sophomore Vadim Ivanov and Frick were also regulars in 2015, who are expected to challenge for important roles on the parallel bar team again this season. High Bar Simons’ take: “The senior class will be looked upon to get it done for us as Eric Poletti and Jacob Moses will be two of our top performers.” Before an injury robbed him of his junior season, Poletti was a consistent performer of the high bar team. A first-place finish versus Army in the Star Meet as a freshman began his career before coming back as a sophomore and posting a career-high 14.1 at William & Mary. The comeback story is common to Moses as well as he competed almost entirely on the high bar as a sophomore in 2014 before stepping away from the gym last spring. In five meets, he recorded a season-high 13.7 at William & Mary before coming back in the ECACs and finishing in 16th place. Tang (14.225), Beeman (13.663) and Frick (13.1) are the three leading gymnasts from 2015 who return on the high bar. Tang surpassed a 14.0 score in eight of his 13 meets, while Beeman reached that mark twice last spring. An earlier performer in the lineup, Frick earned solid sixth-place finishes at William & Mary and at Springfield with identical 13.3 scores. John-Charles Arion is a fourth veteran Midshipmen, who returns after earning competition reps in 2015.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Seven Midshipmen Earn 2015 All-America Scholar-Athlete Accolades As a team, Navy ranked fifth in the nation in with a team grade point average of 3.286, while seven Midshipmen were honored as All-America Scholar-Athletes. May graduate Joshua Steves, rising seniors Zac Ceroli, Michael Dorsey, David Frick, Eric Morrison and Connor Westrick, as well as rising junior Wyatt LaPointe all garnered first team accolades for posting GPAs above 3.50. Steves and Westrick highlight the list of talented Midshipmen student-athletes as Steves (honors mathematics) was one of 10 student-athletes on the 128-person list to earn first team (3.50+ GPA) accolades all four years of their eligibility, while Westrick (systems engineering) was one of four gymnasts on the list with a 4.0 GPA. Dorsey (chemistry), LaPointe (honors history), Frick (mathematics), Morrison (cyber operations) and Ceroli (mechanical engineering) all posted grades between 3.99 and 3.50 to round out the list.

Joshua Steves ‘15 Named Capital One Academic All-America for Second Time May 2015 graduate Joshua Steves garnered Capital One Academic All-America honors for at-large sports from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on June 11. Steves, a member of the Navy gymnastics team, received second-team honors for the second year in a row. He was just the third Navy gymnast to ever earn Academic All-America honors and the first from the sport to receive the accolade multiple times. An honors mathematics major, Steves graduated with a 3.87 grade-point average and an assignment into the submarine program. He previously was recognized for his academic success from the ECAC this year and from the College Gymnastics Association three times. Athletically, Steves was Navy’s top gymnast on the rings this year as he earned his way into the NCAA Qualifying Meet with a national qualifying average of 14.8.

All-Time Academic All-Americans The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has been selecting the nation’s pre-eminent Academic All-American team for over one-half of a century. Criteria for the award consists of a student-athlete be at least a sophomore, earn a varsity letter in their sport and have attained a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (changed from 3.20 for the 2008-09 academic year). Nominees are first voted on by district, then all first-team all-district winners are placed onto a national ballot from which the Academic All-America teams are selected.
