Mike Anti Head Coach | West Virginia (1987) First Year at Navy: First Year Overall:

0-0 (.000) 0-0 (.000)

Announced on May 23, 2017 as the head coach of the Navy rifle team, Anti comes to Annapolis after eight successful years as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy and over 30 total years of experience with shooting, competing and coaching rifle. “Mike’s distinguished career as a former Olympian and one of the world’s top marksmen, a now retired military officer, and a highly successful Division I coach make him especially qualified to lead our varsity program,” said Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. “Following in Coach Bill Kelley’s footsteps will be a challenge, but continuing Bill’s legacy of great success at Navy will clearly be his target. Whereas Coach Anti’s father was one of our most accomplished coaches at Navy in the 90’s and prior to Coach Kelley, I am sure Mike will approach this responsibility with great ambition and an even greater sense of family pride. In many respects, he has come home to Annapolis.” “I am honored and excited to be coming to the Naval Academy as the head rifle coach and want to thank Mr. Gladchuk for giving me this opportunity,” remarked Anti. “The USNA rifle team has an amazing history producing many All-Americans in both events, two NCAA individual champions and 26 NCAA appearances, I am confident that we will continue that proud tradition of winning. I look forward to the challenges and successes the future holds for the rifle team and I am excited to get to work. Go Navy!” No stranger to the Navy rifle program, Anti’s father Ray, led the Midshipmen for 12 years from 1986 through the 1998 season following a distinguished 30-year career with the United States Marine Corps. The younger Anti began his career in high-level competition rifle in 1981 as member of the United States’ junior team before moving into the collegiate ranks at West Virginia University. An eight-time All-American in both smallbore and air rifle from 1984 through 1987. During his time in Morgantown, Anti and the Mountaineers went 38-2 and won the NCAA Championships in 1984 and 1986. As an individual, Anti won the 1986 NCAA Smallbore Championship. Following a standout collegiate career, Anti joined the United States Army and served for 20 years and retired at the rank of major in 2009. Initially stationed in Korea with the 1/503 IN before being assigned to the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) at Fort Benning, Ga. as an international rifle shooter from 1991 to 1994. While at Fort Benning, Anti received his Airborne Badge and Ranger Tab. In 1994, he was assigned to the 1st CAV DIV at Fort Hood, Texas and his assignment included Bde and Bn S-3 Air, Bradley Company Commander and a Headquarters/Headquaters Company Command (HHC). Anti was reassigned to the USAMU in 1998. While serving with the U.S. Army, Anti was also assigned to the World Class Athlete Program and was given the opportunity to teach and ply his skills on the international level. A four-time Olympian, Anti first appeared at the premier global

competition in 1992 in the men’s 50-meter prone rifle event. Eight years later in 2000, Anti competed for the United States in the men’s three-position event. Anti made his way onto the medal stand in the next Olympics in 2004 at the Athens Games as he earned a silver medal in the men’s 3x40 rifle event. He rounded out his Olympic career in 2008 as an athlete in the men’s prone event. In addition to his success at the Olympics, Anti is also a two-time World Cup champion, as well as a silver medalist at the 2000 World Cup Finals. He has also competed at the Championships of Americas Games, three World Championship Games and two Pan American Games with a host of team and individual titles to his name. Anti joined the collegiate coaching ranks in August of 2009 as an assistant coach at the Air Force Academy. Since arriving in Colorado Springs, the Falcons have grown into a consistent national and service academy power. Over his eight seasons, Air Force competed in the NCAA Championships in four years and won the President’s Trophy Match four times, including each of the past three seasons. Air Force qualified for and competed in the NCAA Championship in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The 2016 team finished in fourth place with 4,669 points, the program’s highest finish at the national event since 1996. In 2017, Air Force won the President’s Trophy Match and competed at the NCAA Championship, where it finished eighth overall. Individually, eight different Air Force student-athletes earned All-American status under Anti’s coaching. He closed out his career in Colorado Springs in 2017, with four Falcons garnering national accolades, including a spot on the NRA First Team Air Rifle for Spencer Cap. Another individual highlight for Anti and the Falcons during his time with the program was David Higgins (USAFA ’16) earning a spot on the 2016 United States Olympic Team and competing in Rio in the men’s prone event. A 1987 graduate from West Virginia University with a B.S. in business, Anti was inducted in 2014 into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame. A native of Winterville, N.C., Anti and his wife are parents to two NCAA athletes, Matt, a former wrestler at West Virginia and Will, a rising-junior on the WVU rifle team.

Lou MacKenzie Assistant Coach Fourth Year at Navy

Announced as the program’s assistant coach in early June 2014, Lou MacKenzie joined the Navy rifle program after 17 years as the head rifle coach for the Queen Anne’s County 4-H Marksmanship Club. As a third-year assistant coach with the Mids during the 2016-17 season, MacKenzie helped the young squad make strides throughout the season and post a 9-6 record with a pair of wins in GARC competition. Under MacKenzie’s guidance, senior Daniel Jonas was selected as a member of the All-GARC Smallbore Second Team after recording a 578.0 average during the season. Navy picked up its performance versus the best competition in 2016-17 as the team’s top-three aggregate scores came versus No. 1 West Virginia, No. 5 Kentucky and No. 10 Memphis. In 2015-16, MacKenzie helped guide Jodi Cull-Host to her NRA Collegiate Honorable Mention All-American season. Cull-Host shot a 588.9 average in air rifle to rank second all-time in Navy’s record book. Both Cull-Host and Daniel Jonas were named to GARC all-league teams with Cull-Host garnering second team accolades in air rifle and Jonas honorable mention accolades in smallbore. In his first season with the Midshipmen during 2014-15, MacKenzie aided the squad in posting a 6-6 record with GARC wins over No. 16 North Carolina State and No. 18 Ole Miss. Navy twice nearly picked up victories over top-10 opponents as the Mids fell by 10 points to No. 2 Kentucky and No. 7 Memphis in back-to-back weeks. Navy shot a program-record on the current targets (circa 2008) with a 4,651 showing versus John Jay in the NCAA Qualifying match. A 23rd place showing by Dan Jonas in the NCAA Smallbore Rifle Championship concluded the Mids’ year. MacKenzie joined the Midshipmen program after an accomplished career on the junior circuit. Named 2012 Junior Rifle Coach of the Year by the Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association, MacKenzie led Queen Anne’s County to the 2013 and 2014 NRA National Indoor Team Championships in both smallbore and air rifle. Led by 2014 NRA National Indoor Individual Champions, Mark Matheny (air rifle) and Drew Cheezum (smallbore), the team set a new national air rifle scoring record in 2014. His Queen Anne’s County club also won the US Army Air Rifle National Team title. MacKenzie’s top shooter at that match, David Sink, claimed the individual national championship. Including Sink, Matheny, and Cheezum, six members of the club were invited to participate at this spring’s U.S. Junior Olympic Shooting Championships. Since 2006, MacKenzie has seen five of his shooters from Queen Anne’s County move on to collegiate careers at nationally-ranked programs, such as West Virginia, Jacksonville State and Tennessee-Martin. Two of MacKenzie’s most recent shooters, Taylor Ciotola (West Virginia ‘15) and Cole Tucker (Jacksonville State ‘15) each earned All-American honors at their respective schools. Tucker finished second at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Besides coaching his athletes in competitions, MacKenzie scheduled all matches for the Queen Anne’s County club and served as match director for home matches, including the Maryland State Indoor Championship 3-P Smallbore and Precision Standing Air Rifle. He is certified by the National Rifle Association and Maryland 4-H as a rifle, smallbore and pistol instructor.

Glossary of Rifle Terms • Air rifle: A weapon that uses a .177 caliber lead pellet propelled by compressed air or gas instead of a gunpowder charge. The rifles can weigh up to 12.12 pounds. • Bull: Short for bull’s-eye. There are 12 bulls per target, 10 for competition and two for sighting shots. The 10-ring is actually a dot in the center of the bull’s-eye. In smallbore, the 10-dot is slightly smaller than in the air rifle. • Center 10: When the shot hole is tangent to or completely takes out the 10-dot in the target. • Cleaned: A perfect target, in which the shooter hits a 10 on each of the 10 targets on the sheet for a perfect score of 100. Can also be used to refer to a perfect match. • Front sight: The sight attached to the end of the barrel of the rifle, holding the front aperture. • Full course: In smallbore, a full course consists of 120-record shots, 40 in each position, fired in the following order: prone, standing, kneeling. In air rifle, a full course is 40 shots. • Half course: In smallbore, a half course consists of 60 shots, 20 in each position (offhand, kneeling and prone). There is no half course in air rifle. • Electronic Targets: A target system that uses microphones and sound waves from the bullet or pellet going through the paper to send to a monitor on each point. • Iron sights: Sights that employ no magnification. • Kneeling: Shooting from a kneeling position with the offhand (non-trigger side) supported by the off knee. • Off hand: The unsupported standing position (shooting ‘off the hand’ rather than with the non-trigger arm supported on a knee or the floor). • Perfect match score: In air rifle and smallbore, 600 is perfect. • Plug: A metal device the same size as the shot hole, used to score targets. Variations include the ‘inner plug’ and ‘outer plug.’ With the inner plug, the scored is determined by the contact point of the outside edge of the plug with the inside of the next lowest scoring ring. With an outer plug, the score is determined by the contact point of the outer edge of the plug with the inside of the scoring ring. • Prone: Shooting from a lying position. • Range officer: The person in charge of timing the match and ‘running the line,’ which includes assisting shooters who are having difficulties and enforcing rules governing the match. • Record shots: Also known as ‘for record shots,’ those shots that are counted toward the match score, with ‘sighters’ not included.

• Relay: Shooters firing the match at once at a designated time. • Shooting glove: A padded glove or mitt, with or without fingers, used to ensure the comfort of the non-dominant hand (i.e., a right-handed shooter wears a glove on the left hand) as the shooter supports the rifle. • Shooting jacket: The jacket is made of leather or canvas and provides support and pads the shooter to minimize the effect of pulse and recoil. There are strict guidelines regarding the thickness. • Shooting boots: Boots designed for rifle shooting. They have the toe end of the sole and heel cut flat for stability. • Shooting trousers: Snug canvas and/or leather pants usually worn over another pair of comfortable pants. They often have padded reinforcements sewn on both knees and the seat to prevent the slipping of elbows and knees when firing from the kneeling position. • Sighting shots: Practice shots taken before going ‘for record shots.’ Sighting shots are unlimited and may be fired before the beginning of each position. Once the first record shot in a position has been fired, no further sighting shots are permitted. • Sling: Adjustable straps with buckle adjustments and arm cuffs that provide stability. A sling is attached to the rifle and helps to support it. • Smallbore: A .22 caliber weapon with a metallic sight used in competition. It can be customized with special accessories and/or alterations (barrel length and style, stock, design, etc.) to fit the shooter’s needs and comforts. • Spotting scope: A type of telescope used to locate shot holes. • Tie breaking: In NCAA competition, ties are broken as follows: 1) by the highest score in the last 10 shots; 2) by the higest number of 10s, 9s, and 8s; or 3) by the highest number of inner 10s. When shooting other smallbore and air rifle competitions, ties are addressed by the rulebook of either the National Rifle Association or USA Shooting.

2017-18 RIFLE

Guide to Rifle Scoring Air Rifle

• Overview: Competitors stand and shoot lead pellets from .177 caliber guns at targets 10 meters away. The bull’s-eye, or 10-dot, is one-half millimeter wide (about the size of the period at the end of this sentence). • The rifles: Air rifles can be either air or gas-powered and weigh up to 12.12 pounds by NCAA regulations. The rifles have metallic sights. • Course of fire: Competitors have 105 minutes for 60 shots from the standing position. • Perfect match score: A perfect score of 600 is the maximum for air rifle.

Smallbore

• Overview: In smallbore or three-position rifle, athletes fire .22-caliber smallbore rifles from the prone, standing and kneeling positions at targets 50 feet downrange. The bull’s-eye is one-third of a millimeter (slightly larger than the period at the end of this sentence). • The rifles: Athletes shoot free rifles (weight limit 17.6 pounds) that can be customized with special accessories and/or alterations that fit the shooter’s size and preferences. The rifles have metallic sights. • Course of fire: Athletes fire 20 rounds per position for a total of 60 shots. The total time limit is 120 minutes. • Perfect match score: A perfect score of 600 is the maximum for smallbore.
