Season Preview The Mids finished the 2016 campaign with a 6-1 record and second place finish in the Collegiate Sprint Football League. Five of the team’s six wins last season were by 33 or more points. The Mids’ lone loss was in overtime on the road to Penn, the eventual league champions, by a score of 29-23. Navy ended the regular season defeating Army, 10-3, in the Star Game. Third-year head coach Major Jeff Polson, USMC will look to better the Midshipmen’s runner-up finish from last season. Polson, who is 11-3 (.786) overall as head coach, will look to senior captains Mac Lavis (Orinda, Calif.) and Alex Oldham (Dayton, Ohio) to provide leadership for the 2017 Midshipmen team both on and off the field. Navy returns eight players off of last-year’s team who earned AllCSFL accolades – Lavis, Oldham, Dane Livengood (Treynor, Iowa), Patrick McMahan (Windermere, Fla.), Jonathan Meier (Camarillo, Calif.), Bryant Schlade (Napoleon, Ohio), George Skinner (Varnville, S.C.), and Miles Whitlow (Madison, Ala.). DEFENSE Last season, the Mids’ defense was second in the league in yards and points allowed per game with respective averages of 203.0 yards and 8.7 points. The defense’s final stat line included 27 sacks, eight interceptions and six forced fumbles. Against Post on Sept. 30, Navy held Post to a 2016 CSFL single-game low of -25 yards rushing. Schlade, who earned first-team All-CSFL honors last season, anchors the Mids defensive line. He is joined by Troy Monroe (Columbus, Ga.) and Luke Coughlin (Islip, N.Y.) on the defensive front. Schlade led the team with 43 tackles a season ago, including a teambest 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. Monroe notched 15 stops as a rookie, including 6.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks, while Coughlin contributed 17 tackles, 4.5 TFL, and 2.0 sacks. Oldham leads a linebacking corps that is expected to see Mason Hooten (Orlando, Fla.) and Dean Rye (Fairfax, Va.) join the captain in starting roles. Oldham posted 34 tackles, including 8.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks on his way to second-team all-league accolades last year. Hooten recorded 11 tackles, including seven solo stops and four assisted tackles, while registering a tackle for loss, while Rye recorded 14 tackles (nine solo, five assisted) with a sack. At rover, Sheppard Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) returns after playing in all seven games last year, making five starts and recording 22 tackles, including 17 solo stops with a pair of pass breakups, an interception and a quarterback hurry. In the secondary, the Midshipmen will look to McMahan, Tommy Guinan (Elmhurst, Ill.), Pat Guinan (Elmhurst, Ill.), and Grant Hooper (Huntington, Md.) to limit the opposition’s air attack. McMahan, a two-time all-league selection, played in all seven games last season, making five starts. He recorded 12 tackles on the year, including 11 solo stops. T. Guinan amassed 18 tackles (nine solo, nine assisted) to go along with a pair of pass breakups and an interception, while younger brother Pat saw action in all seven games as a freshman a year ago.

Hooper earned the starting job in the preseason as a plebe. OFFENSE In 2016, Navy’s offense ranked first in the CSFL in total yardage with a 403.7 yards per game average on the strength of the number one rushing offense with 210.3 yards per contest. The Mids also led the league in scoring offense with a 37.6 points per game average on 36 touchdowns, six field goals and one safety scored. This season the Mids will look to Brandon Coleman (Yonkers, N.Y.) to replace quarterback Nick Deterding (Lindsborg, Kan.) who graduated after the 2016 season. Coleman began his collegiate career as a backup quarterback for the NCAA football team at the Naval Academy before joining the sprint football team. Last season, he played in six games as a reserve running back. Lavis, an All-CSFL performer last season, assumes the role of starting running back for the 2017 season. The 2017 captain rushed for 299 yards on 64 carries, while adding 58 receiving yards on seven catches for 357 all-purpose yards as a junior. He scored three rushing touchdowns, while adding a receiving TD. SB Matt Vogel (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), FB Brian McLaughlin (Melrose, Mass.), and TE Livengood enter opening weekend at starters in their respective positions. Vogel amassed 265 receiving yards on 20 receptions with three touchdowns, while Livengood recorded 134 yards receiving on nine receptions with a touchdown. McLaughlin did not compete during the 2016 season due to injury, but saw action as a freshman in 2015 primarily on special teams. Whitlow and J.T. Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) are set to lead the receiving corps for the Midshipmen. Whitlow earned first team accolades a year ago, recording the second-most receiving touchdowns in the CSFL with seven, while notching the sixth-most receiving yards with 362. Thompson returns to his starting position after recording 282 yards receiving on 21 catches with three touchdowns last year. Meier, a second team All-CSFL performer, anchors the offensive line this season, which also features Devon Doss (Chicago, Ill.), Adam Krause (Omro, Wis.), Reid Kaplan (Charleston, S.C.), and Dan Fullmer (Milwaukee, Wis.). Last season, the offensive line helped pave the way for a rushing attack that amassed 1,472 yards on the ground with 16 touchdowns, while providing pass protection for an air assault that tallied 1,354 passing yards with an additional 16 TDs. SPECIAL TEAMS On special teams, Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) is slated to take care of placekicking duties, while Skinner, a second team All-CSFL honoree in 2016, will handle the team’s punting. Last year, Navy’s special teams unit was first in kick return average at 25.1 and second in punt returns with a 9.5 yards per return. At Penn last season, McMahan returned the opening kickoff 96 yards. The kick return touchdown was the only one all year in the CSFL.

2017 sprint football Coaching Staff

Major Jeff Polson, USMC

Head Coach // New Mexico (2002) Third Season // 11-3 (.786) Major Jeff Polson, USMC was appointed head coach of the Navy sprint football program during the summer of 2015. Polson became the 30th head coach in the program’s history and took over for Major Kavan Lake, USMC, who went 19-2 with a CSFL championship over his three years as head coach. In his first season at the helm of the program, Polson led the Mids to a 5-2 record and 4-2 mark in CSFL. In recognition of the team’s strong season where Navy’s two losses came by a combined three points, 16 Mids were named to All-CSFL teams with four earning first team nods. After the completion of the sprint season, Polson led the team to Mexico City for the first-ever goodwill exhibition contest between the United Naval Academy and Heroico Colegio Militar (The Mexican Military Academy). During the 2016 season, Navy finished in second place in the CSFL. Five of the team’s six wins were by 33 or more points. The Mids’ lone loss was in overtime on the road to Penn, the eventual league champions, by a score of 29-23. Eighteen Midshipmen were selected to the CSFL All-Conference Team, including six players who earned first-team accolades. Navy’s offense ranked first in the CSFL in total yardage with a 403.7 yards per game average on the strength of the number one rushing offense with 210.3 yards per contest. The Mids also led the league in scoring offense with a 37.6 points per game average on 36 touchdowns, six field goals and one safety scored. The Mids’ defense was second in the league in yards and points allowed per game with respective averages of 203.0 yards and 8.7 points. The defense’s final statline included 27 sacks, eight interceptions and six forced fumbles. Navy defeated Army, 10-3 in the 2016 Star Game. The Mids’ defense held the Black Knights to just one first quarter field goal and 122 total yards (87 passing and 35 rushing). Offensively, Navy outgained Army by 205 yards (327-122), recorded 15 more first downs (205) and out-possessed its opposition by nearly 14 and a half more minutes (37:13-22:47). Polson began his Marine Corps career in June 1991 at MCRD Parris Island, S.C. He reported to the 2d Combat Engineer Battalion in Camp Lejeune, N.C. where he was assigned for three years. He moved on to Marine Air Traffic Control Squadron 18 in Okinawa, Japan where he completed a one year unaccompanied tour. At the end of his time in Japan, Polson decided

to pursue collegiate education and leave the corps, though he was quickly lured back and applied for the Active Reserve program in December of 1995. Following three years with the I-I Staff, Polson was selected as the first AR Marine for the Marine Corps Enlisted to Officer Program (MECEP). Beginning in 1998, he went to the University of New Mexico as a member of the NROTC unit where he both trained Midshipmen and Marines for Officer Candidate School, as well as worked on his college degree. It was at New Mexico that he suited up for the Lobo football program under the direction of head coach Rocky Long. As a walk-on, Polson earned a backup role as a special teams player and strong safety behind future NFL Pro Bowler and Chicago Bear, Brian Urlacher during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. He graduated New Mexico in May of 2002 with undergraduate degrees in Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Productions and Operations Management. Polson was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer in May 2002. Since earning his commission, he served as the 2dMarine Division Adjutant and Casualty Cell Officer in Charge for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) I and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) I. During OIF II between 2003 and 2004, Polson deployed with Task Force 2/2 to Fallujah, Iraq. During OIF 5, Polson deployed with Marine Wing Support Squadron-373 to Al Taqaddum, Iraq as the Logistics Officer and Headquarters Company Commander. Over the past 10 years, Polson has served in logistics, motor transportation, as an inspecting officer, and operations officer with billets both stateside in the Marine Corps and in the diplomatic security arena overseas. His most recent assignment saw him assume the duties as the Operations Officer for Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (MCESG) in Quantico, Va. where he was responsible for the Marine Security Guard expansion program worldwide as a result of the attacks in Benghazi. Polson has always been actively involved with athletics as he augmented his two years of playing collegiately at New Mexico with a two-year stint as a member of the Langen Knights semi-professional football team in Langen, Germany during his stay in Europe as an inspection officer in 2010 and 2011.

Navy finished in second place in the Collegiate Sprint Football League.

Navy had six players selected All-CSFL First Team: Nick Abramson (LB), Brendon Clements (RB & All-Purpose), Ross Gilchriest (OL), Kendall Mackey (DB), Bryant Schlade (DL), and Miles Whitlow (WR). A total of six were named to the All-CSFL Second Team: Blake Papet (DL), Kyle Robb (OL), Patrick McMahan (PR), Jonathan Meier (OL), Alex Oldham (LB), and George Skinner (P). In addition, Navy earned six Honorable Mention awards: Nick Deterding (QB), Drew Dziwulski (LB), Rex Willis (DB), Devin Graves (DB), Mac Lavis (RB), and Dane Livengood (TE).

Navy earned six CSFL weekly awards: Nick Deterding (Sept. 20), Jules Murphy (Oct. 4), Patrick McMahan (Oct. 11), Brendon Clements (Oct. 18, Oct. 25) and Nick Abramson (Nov. 8).

Versus Post on Sept. 30, Navy held Post to a 2016 CSFL single-game low of -25 yards rushing.

The team’s special teams unit was first in kick return average at 25.1 and second in punt returns with a 9.5 yards per return.

Navy defeated Army, 10-3 in the Star Game at home on Nov. 4. The Mids’ defense held the Black Knights to just one first quarter field goal and 122 total yards (87 passing & 35 rushing). Offensively, Navy outgained Army by 205 yards (327-122), recorded 15 more first downs (205) and out-possessed its opposition by nearly 14 and a half more minutes (37:13-22:47).

Individual Star Game standouts included, Nick Abramson, who made a career-high 13 tackles, Kendall Mackey, who finished with seven tackles and an interception (the sixth caused turnover of his career versus Army) and Brendon Clements, who started at running back, cornerback and special teams returner. Clements notched the game’s only touchdown and combined for 177 all-purpose yards.

For the second straight year, the program was selected to represent the United States in a goodwill exhibition football game with Heroico Colegio Militar, the Mexican Military Academy. The second part of a home-and-home series, the Mids hosted their Mexican counterparts for four days of culture, educational and athletic immersion. The two teams faced off on the gridiron with Navy upending HCM, 34-0 on Dec. 2 at Rip Miller Field.

He recorded 264 more rushing yards, 380 all-purpose yards and five more TDs than his next nearest league competitor. His all-purpose stat line included 774 rushing, 164 receiving, 137 kick return and 48 punt return yards. In four separate occasions, Clements rushed for over 100 yards in a game.
