Kip Simons Head Coach Second Year at Navy Ohio State ‘94

Kip Simons, a decorated head coach at Air Force and Olympic performer, was announced on Sept. 14, 2015 as the new head gymnastics coach at Navy. Simons came to Annapolis after 10 years as the head coach of a Falcons’ team that reached new heights nationally and became a perennial top-10 program. In his first season as the Mids’ head coach in 2016, the team reached new heights of success both in and out of the gym. Simons and Navy captured the program’s first ECAC Championship since 1989 with a score of 423.4 to tie with Army West Point for the title. A program-record 424.1 score at the All-Academy Championship helped the team earn the league’s automatic qualifying spot for the NCAA Championship and break the tie for ECAC supremacy. The Mids’ spot as a team at the NCAA Championship was just the second ever in program history and first since 2009. In the national meet in Columbus, Ohio, Navy competed in the first team session and recorded a 410.1 score. Three individuals from the team advanced to the events finals: Jonny Tang (AA), Connor Gonzales (R) and Eric Poletti (R). Prior to the NCAAs, Simons saw his squad earn 15 All-ECAC honors for topsix performances at the ECAC Championship with Mitchell Larios (V and PB), Eric Morrison (PH) and Gonzales (R) taking home event titles. In the regular season, the Mids defeated the Black Knights of Army in the annual Star Meet, 419.3-413.75. In the classroom, Connor Westrick was selected as a CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team honoree, in addition to 10 other Mids earning CGA All-America Scholar-Athletes nods for posting GPAs above 3.2. As a team, Navy ranked fifth in the nation in with a team grade point average of 3.355. For his team’s success in 2016, Simons was recognized as the CGA East Regional Coach of the Year, as well as the ECAC Men’s Gymnastics CoCoach of the Year. An internationally renown gymnast since 1988, Simons was a four-year member of the United States Senior National team and competed on two world championship teams, as well as with the gold medal winning teams at the 1994 Goodwill Games and 1995 Pan-American Games. His competitive career culminated with a spot on the 1996 United States Olympic team. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Simons was a member of the U.S. team that finished fifth overall.

Beginning with the 2005-06 season, Simons started a 10-year reign in charge of the gymnastics program at the United States Air Force Academy. A five-time USAG Varsity Head Coach of the Year, the Falcons thrived under his leadership and expertise. In both 2012 and 2014, Air Force earned rankings as high as eighth nationally. Simons took a team to the NCAA National Qualifying Meet and saw 15 gymnasts advance into the NCAA Championships in each of his final five years in Colorado Springs. On three occasions under his tutelage Falcon athletes earned NCAA All-American nods, Greg Stine twice in 2008 (all-around and rings) and Tim Wang in 2014 (pommel horse). In USAG National Championship competition, Simons and Air Force won six straight team titles from 2010 through 2015 and collected 28 individual event titles. Amongst the service academies, the Falcons won each of the last six meetings at the annual All-Academy Championship Meet between Air Force, Army and Navy. In recognition of his team’s success Simons has been the recipient of four CGA Collegiate Division National Head Coach of the Year awards (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013), as well as two NCAA Regional Head Coach of the Year (2008, 2010) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year (2006, 2014) honors, respectively. A 1994 graduate from Ohio State University, Simons earned numerous honors throughout his four years with the Buckeyes, including Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the Nissen-Emery Award, as the nation’s top senior gymnast. He was a four-year member of the All-Big 10 and earned conference titles on the parallel bars (1992, 1994), still rings (1992) and high bar (1993). Simons garnered two NCAA All-America certificates during his time in Columbus. In September 2006, the Varsity “O” Association inducted him into Ohio State’s Athletic Hall of Fame. For his work and success throughout the sport, Simons was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in the summer of 2010. He was joined in the 2010 induction class by 1996 Olympic team gold medalist Dominique Moceanu, 1992 Olympic team bronze medalist Wendy Bruce-Martin, 2000 Olympian Jennifer Parilla, two-time U.S. Men’s Olympic team head coach Kevin Mazeika and 2000 U.S. Olympic trampoline coach Robert Null.

After retiring from international competition, Simons moved into collegiate coaching at the University of California in 2001. In five seasons from 2001 to 2005, the Bears twice finished in third place at the NCAA Championships and had four individuals win national championships. Simons was named Associate Head Coach of the Bears for his final season in Berkeley.

Craig Holt Assistant Coach 18th Year at Navy Syracuse ‘95

Craig Holt enters his 18th season with the Navy program. After 16 years as an assistant coach with Dr. Sho Fukushima through 2015, he stayed on staff under the leadership for new head coach Kip Simons. Holt brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in the sport of gymnastics as both a former athlete and assistant coach.

His efforts in the gym have not gone unrecognized, as he was named the 2007 NCAA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year, 2008 and ‘06 USAG Collegiate Division Assistant Coach of the Year, 2016 (‘16 Co-AC), 2011, 2007 and 2003 ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year and, 2016 and 2007 (‘07 Co-AC) CGA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year.

“Navy is a program built on maximizing individual achievement for the good of the team’s success,” Holt said. “As a team, our training is intense, consistent and scientific. This model helps us develop a strong base of physical gymnastics skill, mental preparation and a strong character.”

During the summer of 2005, Holt coached the United States team in the 2005 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Holt guided the United States to a second-place team finish with gold medal performances in the floor exercise and pommel horse. In addition to his coaching duties, Holt also served as a judge at the Maccabiah Games.

2016 was a banner year for Holt and the Navy program as the team captured the ECAC Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. Navy’s ECAC crown was its first since 1989, while a team appearance in the NCAAs had only occured once prior back in 2009. Three Mids advanced from the team qualifying meet to the events finals of the NCAA Championships, Jonny Tang (all-around), Connor Gonzales (rings) and Eric Poletti (rings). In addition to their success at the national meet, Navy accrued 15 All-ECAC honorees at the ECAC Championship. For the team’s stellar performance during the season, Holt was recognized as the CGA East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year, as well as the ECAC Men’s Gymnastics Co-Assistant Coach of the Year. During 2013-15 seasons, Holt has helped three athletes qualify for and compete in the NCAA Championships. In April of 2015 at the University of Oklahoma, Jonny Tang was an entrant in the all-around competition, while Mitchell Larios took on the nation’s best on the vault. In 2013, Chris Junghans finished 12th overall in the all-around competition and just missed placing in the top 10 by 0.4 points.

Holt came to the Academy after serving as an assistant coach for one season at William & Mary and two years at his alma mater, Syracuse. “I would like all of our athletes to leave the Naval Academy knowing that they have the tools to not only meet, but exceed all that is expected of them,” he added. “They should have a strong sense of confidence and accomplishment as they begin their careers.” As a gymnast, Holt was an NCAA finalist on the rings in 1994. He is a 1995 graduate of Syracuse, where he earned a degree in physical education. Holt earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Syracuse in the summer of 2002.

Prior to Junghans, Holt helped coach Andrew Faulk to his spectacular 2012 senior campaign, which included a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2011, Holt was named ECAC Tri-Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped guide Dylan Parrott and Andrew Faulk to the NCAA Championships. In 2009, Holt assisted in helping the Midshipmen to a memorable season, as they finished with an impressive 15-4 record and a N-Star victory at Army. In addition, the Mids won their second-straight All-Academy Championship, placed second at the ECAC Championship and advanced as a team to the NCAA Qualifying Meet for the first time in program history.

Charlie Tamayo Assistant Coach First Year at Navy ISCF Manuel Fajardo ‘02

Named to Navy’s coaching staff in September of 2016, Tamayo comes to Annapolis following a storied career on the international competition scene, as well as over 10 years as a youth coach. “I am thrilled to have Charlie on board as a member of the Navy gymnastics family in support of our physical mission,” said head coach Kip Simons. “Charlie was tremendously successful on the world stage overcoming many obstacles with his relentless perseverance. He brings that same tenacity to his coaching style which aligns perfectly with our philosophy of developing leaders of character. In short order, Charlie’s enthusiasm and passion have raised the bar to a new level in the gym and the guys have responded.”

After defecting from Cuba in 2003, Tamayo began his coaching career in the United States. From 2004 through 2016, he served as the head coach of elite youth programs in California and Colorado, as well as the VIP and director of the Woodward West Gymnastics Camp from 2006 to 2007. Most recently, Tamayo was the head coach of the West Coast Elite Gymnastics women’s team in Arcadia, California. As the head coach he organized the rotations, lesson plans and conditioning programs for his athletes. Tamayo is a 2002 graduate from the Higher Institute of Physical Culture Manuel Fajardo in Havana, Cuba.

“I am honored by the opportunity given to me by Kip Simons,” remarked Tamayo. “To be a part of the Navy family and this amazing organization is a dream come true. I look forward to bringing all of my experiences from the competitive floor to our gym. I will do everything possible to bring this gymnastics team to another level.” An elite competitor on the international circuit, Tamayo was a world champion at the 2002 World Cup competition and a bronze medalist at the 2001 World Championships, as well as a three-time champion at the Pan American Games as a member of the Cuban National Team. An all-around competitor, Tamayo thrived in vault and ring competitions as both of his medals from world events came on the vault.

SEASON PREVIEW

Coming off a standout 2016 season that saw the program reach new heights with its first ECAC Championship since 1989 and second-ever NCAA Championship bid as a team, the Mids will look to reload on the fly this year as eight freshmen will be incorporated over a competitive 13-meet schedule. “We pretty much maximized our full potential last year,” remarked second-year head coach Kip Simons. “I came in mid-September and immediately had high expectations for the team and those 10 seniors. We fulfilled that goal by winning the conference for the first time since 1989 and taking the team to the NCAAs, it was one for the story books. “We have a whole new team here this season. Under the leadership of our team captain Wyatt LaPointe, I couldn’t have asked for a better leader. We have eight plebes out there working and they’re bright eyed. We have a lot of work to get them up to speed with the collegiate competition world and we start off at the West Point Open. We’ve had a great preseason and I know that those freshmen will contribute in at least half of our routines this year. We’ll have some growing pains along the way, but I expect us to hit full stride by midseason and be ready to go for championship season.” Returners After graduating a 10-man senior class last May, the initial pressure for Navy’s 2017 team will fall on its seven returning veterans. Seniors Jonny Tang and Wyatt LaPointe will lead the way in action and in leadership as Tang will be competing as an all-around gymnast for his fourth straight year and LaPointe is serving as the team’s captain.

In 2016, Tang advanced to the NCAA Championship all-around finals and finished 15th nationally with an 82.95 score. Leading up to the NCAA meet, Tang earned six top-six podium finishes between the USAG and ECAC Championships. At the USAGs, the Pennsylvania native won the floor exercise event title with a 14.55 performance. At five separate occasions during the regular season he was selected by the ECAC as its Gymnast of the Week. LaPointe was a constant staple in the Mids’ rings lineup as a junior in 2016 and will once again be counted on in that event for Navy in 2017. Last year, he posted five 14.0-plus scores over his nine appearances. LaPointe also aided Navy’s vaulting corps in three different meets. The junior class for Navy stands three deep with Noah Beeman, Andy Jones and Vadim Ivanov. After competing as an all-arounder intermittently over his first two seasons, Simons foresees Beeman as a regular in the challenging sixevent position. Beeman saw action in the floor, pommel horse and high bar 11 times in 2016 and earned All-ECAC honors for his fourth and fifth-place finishes respectively on the high bar and floor at the conference championship. “Jonny is always going to do a great job for us, but Noah, another all-arounder, has had an outstanding preseason and I expect him to step up and do all six events for us and quite frankly push Jonny as the all-around leader,” said Simons. Jones broke through as a sophomore in his first collegiate action with a catalog of strong performances on the floor, vault and high bar. A two-time ECAC Rookie of the Week, Jones qualified for the event finals on the vault at both the USAG and ECAC Championships and finished on the podium with respective finishes of third and fifth place. Over his first two seasons wearing the Blue and Gold, Ivanov has found himself in a variety of competitions as a pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar performer. In 2016, he recorded individual career-highs with a 13.3 on the pommel horse and 13.45 on the high bar. The sophomore duo of Christian Correale and Mitchell Fornek complete the list of returning Navy gymnasts. A specialist on the rings and parallel bars, Correale was

SEASON PREVIEW

a consistent member of the Mids’ counting lineup and came through with one of his best scores of the season, a 14.2 on the rings, in Navy’s ECAC title-winning effort in April. He qualified for the event finals on both apparatuses at the conference championship. For his performance at the All-Academy Championship in midFebruary, Correale was selected as the ECAC Rookie of the Week. Fornek saw limited in-meet action for the Mids as he battled for reps with Navy’s deep senior-laden starting lineup. Fornek competed for Navy in a pair of contests versus William & Mary on the rings and high bar and turned in a top-notch result in his first showing against the Tribe with a 14.25-point high bar routine to rank second overall. Newcomers To reload after losing such a significant class, the coaching staff brought in eight talented freshmen, many of whom will impact the team immediately. A diverse class with an array of top-level finishes at the JO and JE Nationals and international competition to their name, the plebe class will be play a large role in Navy’s postseason aspirations in 2017 and into the future. Texas is represented by a trio of gymnasts as Lucas Beltran, Cian McConnell and Tanner West join the program from the Lone Star State. Will Longwe and Ben Provost give the Class of 2020 two Massachusetts natives, while Frank Bradley (Virginia), Trevor North (Ohio) and Ryan Orce (Florida) round out the expansive class. “Freshmen-wise it will be a total team effort,” said Simons. “We have eight gymnasts out there and all eight will probably see competition time throughout the season. Tanner West comes in as our top freshman, but he’s had a few injuries throughout the preseason. He’s slated to contribute in three or four events. All the way through from Ryan Orce to Ben Provost to Lucas Beltran, all plebes are going to have an impact and we’re going to need them to step up and get the job down, especially when we move into the second half of the season.”

Schedule Navy’s 2017 schedule begins on Friday, January 13 with two days of competition at the West Point Open. The Mids will take on a talented seven-team field with No. 5 Penn State and No. 7 Nebraska leading the way. The following Saturday, the Mids will kick off their four-meet home schedule with the 2017 Navy Open. The final three home competitions for Navy are William & Mary (Jan. 28), Penn State (Feb. 25) and Air Force/William & Mary (March 10). The team’s annual Star Meet with Army is set for February 4 at West Point. The postseason for the Mids begins in late March with the USAG Collegiate Championship on March 24 in Seattle. Navy will defend its ECAC title in Chicago on April 8. With the ECAC dropping under the NCAA mandatory automatic qualifying number of six varsity members, the team title will not guarantee admittance into the NCAA Championship. For 2017 and seasons moving forward the top 12 teams regardless of conference designation will be ranked by a “national qualifying average” and invited to compete at the NCAAs. This season, the NCAA Championship will be hosted by Army on the April 21 and 22. “The West Point Open is a great early season gauge of where we stand,” remarked Simons. “They’re will be some really good teams, including two Big 10 schools up there. It will also give us an early look versus Army. The Star Meet is really our biggest regular season competition, then it’s onto the conference championship and USAG Nationals. The ultimate goal is to take the team back to the NCAA Championship as a program.” “Our objectives really haven’t changed from last year. We aim to maximize our potential, win the conference and take the team to the NCAA Championship. The difference from 2016 to 2017 is that we have a whole different team. I love this team. These guys are a bunch of hungry athletes who bring it every single day when they walk through the doors of the gym. I’m excited for what lies ahead this season.”

*Simons shared ECAC Coach of the Year honors with Army West Point’s Doug Van Everen, while Holt was named Co-Assistant Coach of the Year with the Black Knights’ Carmine Giglio. *At the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, the team finished in third place with 412.85 points. *Individually, six Midshipmen qualified for 11 spots in the event finals and all came away with at least one USAG All-American honor. Larios (vault), Poletti (rings) and Tang (floor exercise) all were champions of their respective events. *In addition to the three event titles, MIDN 1/C Connor Westrick and Dorsey on the pommel horse, Jones on the vault, Tang on the parallel bars, and Tang and Poletti on the high bar, all ranked top-six to give Navy nine podium finishes in total.

Larios posted the highest scores in floor exercise, vault and parallel bars, while Gonzales was first on the rings. *Navy had gymnasts represented in the top-30 nationally in all six events, as well as in the all-around competition in the final regular season statistical standings: Tang (All-Around: 84.563-17th), Tang (Floor Exercise: 14.88821st), Larios (Floor Exercise: 14.800-27th), Morrison (Pommel Horse: 14.500, 26th), Poletti (Rings: 15.025, 12th), Gonzales (Rings: 14.700, 28th), Larios (Vault: 15.069, 12th), Larios (Parallel Bars: 14.738, 24th), Tang (High Bar: 14.575, 27th). *Team won 16 ECAC weekly gymnastics honors with Tang taking home five of the accolades.
