2018 Navy Sprint Football at a Glance… New Coach

First-year head coach Captain Jason Dewald, USMC became the 31st head coach in the program’s history, taking over for Major Jeff Polson, USMC, who went 17-5 over his three years as head coach. Dewald graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio in 2007 receiving his bachelor’s degree in history. He played two years of football at Baldwin Wallace on the offensive line. After suffering an injury, Dewald was selected to be a student coach for the junior varsity team for two seasons, serving as the offensive line and co-offensive coordinator for the JV team. During his time as a student coach, the junior varsity team went 13-3. In 2008, he received a commission in the United States Marine Corps.

Captains

This season, Navy will be led by a pair of senior captains – Dane Livengood and Sheppard Wilson. Livengood, a 2016 Honorable Mention All-CSFL selection, will serve as the offensive captain, while Wilson, who is also the captain of the captains for the Midshipmen, will be the defensive representative. Wilson earned First Team All-CSFL honors las season.

2017 Rule Changes

With the addition of Caldwell University, the coaches voted to split the league into two divisions for 2017. The North Division included Army West Point, Cornell, Franklin Pierce and Post, while the South Division included Caldwell, Chestnut Hill, Mansfield, Penn and Navy. In addition to the new divisional alignment for 2017, the coaches also voted to increase the playing weight from 172.0 pounds to 178.0 pounds.

Season in Review

Sprint football finished the year 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League – South Division. Navy hosted Penn for the CSFL South Title, however, the Mids fell to the Quakers, 28-23, to finish second in the division. The Navy sprint football team had 13 different players earn AllCollegiate Sprint Football League accolades, including four players named First Team All-CSFL and a pair named to the second team. Luke Coughlin, Patrick McMahan, Jonathan Meier, and Jared Swenson were named first team All-CSFL., while Mac Lavis and Sheppard Wilson were tabbed to the second team. In addition, the Midshipmen had seven players named honorable mention All-CSFL – Braydan Chmiel, Mason Hooten, Adam Krause, Alex Oldham, Dean Rye, Bryant Schlade, and Sam Shaunak. Three of Navy’s six victories on the season were shutouts. In those wins, the Midshipmen outscored their opponents 144-0.

CSFL Players of the Week

Following a 41-14 victory on the road against Mansfield, Sheppard Wilson was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Jared Swenson was dubbed Special Teams Player of the Week. Jared Swenson tallied nine points in Navy’s 33-0 shutout win over Franklin Pierce in the Mids’ home opener to earn his second consecutive CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week award. He finished the game with two field goals and three extra points. Luke Coughlin was named the CSFL Defensive Player of the Week after helping lead Navy to an impressive 49-14 victory over Cornell. The senior anchored the defense with a team-high nine tackles, including six solo stops. He recorded 2.0 tackles for loss, including the game’s only sack. In addition, Coughlin forced a fumble. Jared Swenson scored 18 points in Navy’s 72-0 victory over Caldwell to earn his third CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week accolade. The sophomore was a perfect 9-for-9 in PAT attempts, while adding three field goals. He connected on field goals of 35, 48, and 19 yards.

Navy in the Season Rankings

Navy’s offense ranked first in the league in rushing (187.6 yards/ game), first downs (20.1 avg/g), and fourth down conversions (.556). In addition, the Midshipmen offense was second in the CSFL in total offense (359.5 avg/g) and scoring offense (36.2 avg/g). Defensively, Navy was first in the CSFL in passing defense (126.4 avg/g), while ranking second in total defense (192.0 avg/g), rushing defense (65.6 avg/g), and interceptions (9.7 avg/g). The Mids were third in the CSFL in scoring defense (14.1 avg/g) and sacks (2.5 avg/g). Navy was second in field goals made (33) and PAT kicking made (33). Jared Swenson was first in the CSFL in field goals (11) and field goal percentage (.647), while ranking second in the league scoring (8.2 pts/g) and PAT kicking percentage (.971). Patrick McMahan led the CSFL in interceptions with four, while Luke Coughlin had a league-best three forced fumbles. Mile Whitlow was third overall in interceptions with three. Luke Coughlin was ranked in the top-five (4th) in the CSFL in sacks with eight on the year, while finishing in the top-10 (6th) in tackles for loss with 15. Mac Lavis finished the season sixth overall in the league in scoring and fourth in scoring touchdowns. The captain rushed for five TDs in five games, missing action with an injury. Braydan Chmiel ranked in the top-five in the league in total offense (3rd – 159.4 yds/g), passing yards per game (5th – 134.3 avg/g) and passing efficiency (5th – 146.2).

Captain Jason Dewald, USMC Head Coach // Baldwin Wallace (2007) First Season // 0-0 (.000) Captain Jason Dewald, USMC was appointed head coach of the Navy sprint football program during the summer of 2018. Dewald became the 31st head coach in the program’s history and took over for Major Jeff Polson, USMC. “My family and I are excited to join the United States Naval Academy,” Dewald said of his appointment. “I would like to thank both the Navy and the Marine Corps for this opportunity. I am honored to be a part of the Navy Sprint Football family and to continue the great tradition that the program was built upon.” Dewald, a native of Mansfield, Ohio, graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio in 2007 receiving his bachelor’s degree in history. In 2008, he received a commission in the United States Marine Corps. Following completion of The Basic School and Field Artillery Officer Basic Course in 2010, he was assigned to 2D Battalion, 10th Marines Regiment, 2D Marine Division in Camp Lejeune, N.C. where he served as a Guns Platoon Commander for Battery G. From 2011 to 2012, Dewald served as Fire Support Team Leader, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Marjah, Afghanistan. The following two years (2012-13), he served as the Battalion Assistant Operations Officer, Headquarters Battery Commander, and Assistant Fire Support Coordinator for 3rd Battalion, 10th Marines at Camp Lejeune.

In 2013, Dewald reported to 2D Marine Raider Battalion, Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) where he served as the Headquarters and Service Company Commander and Assistant Operations Officer from May 2013 to December 2015. He also attended Expeditionary Warfare School Blended Seminar in Quantico, Virginia during his time in MARSOC. Dewald received orders in December 2015 to 1st Battalion, 12th Marines Regiment in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and severed as the 2D Battalion, 3rd Marines Fire Support Officer and Battery Commander for Battery A until May 2018. Dewald is a graduate of Martial Arts Instructor Course, Joint Fire Observer Course, Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) Full Spectrum Level C Course, SERE 245C Joint Services Program Course, Fire Support Coordination Course and the Expedition Warfare School. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Dewald played two years of football at Baldwin Wallace on the offensive line. With the addition of Caldwell University, the coaches voted to split the league into two divisions for 2017. The North Division included Army West Point, Cornell, Franklin Pierce and Post, while the South Division included Caldwell, Chestnut Hill, Mansfield, Penn and Navy.

Luke Coughlin was named the CSFL Defensive Player of the Week after helping lead Navy to an impressive 49-14 victory over Cornell. The senior anchored the defense with a team-high nine tackles, including six solo stops. He recorded 2.0 tackles for loss, including the game’s only sack. In addition, Coughlin forced a fumble.

In addition to the new divisional alignment for 2017, the coaches also voted to increase the playing weight from 172.0 pounds to 178.0 pounds.

Sprint football finished the year 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League – South Division. Navy hosted Penn for the CSFL South Title, however, the Mids fell to the Quakers, 28-23, to finish second in the division.

Jared Swenson scored 18 points in Navy’s 72-0 victory over Caldwell to earn his third CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week accolade. The sophomore was a perfect 9-for-9 in PAT attempts, while adding three field goals. He connected on field goals of 35, 48, and 19 yards.

Three of Navy’s six victories on the season were shutouts. In those wins, the Midshipmen outscored their opponents 144-0.

The Navy sprint football team had 13 different players earn All-Collegiate Sprint Football League accolades, including four players named First Team All-CSFL and a pair named to the second team.

Navy’s offense ranked first in the league in rushing (187.6 yards/game), first downs (20.1 avg/g), and fourth down conversions (.556). In addition, the Midshipmen offense was second in the CSFL in total offense (359.5 avg/g) and scoring offense (36.2 avg/g).

Senior defensive lineman Luke Coughlin, senior defensive back Patrick McMahan, senior offensive lineman Jonathan Meier, and sophomore place kicker Jared Swenson were named first team All-CSFL.

Defensively, Navy was first in the CSFL in passing defense (126.4 avg/g), while ranking second in total defense (192.0 avg/g), rushing defense (65.6 avg/g), and interceptions (9.7 avg/g). The Mids were third in the CSFL in scoring defense (14.1 avg/g) and sacks (2.5 avg/g).

Senior running back and team co-captain Mac Lavis and junior linebacker Sheppard Wilson were tabbed to the second team.

Navy was second in field goals made (33) and PAT kicking made (33).

In addition, the Midshipmen had seven players named honorable mention All-CSFL – freshman quarterback Braydan Chmiel, junior linebacker Mason Hooten, sophomore offensive lineman Adam Krause, senior linebacker and teamco-captain Alex Oldham, junior linebacker Dean Rye, senior defensive lineman Bryant Schlade, and senior wide receiver Sam Shaunak.

Jared Swenson was first in the CSFL in field goals (11) and field goal percentage (.647), while ranking second in the league scoring (8.2 pts/g) and PAT kicking percentage (.971).

Patrick McMahan led the CSFL in interceptions with four, while Coughlin had a league-best three forced fumbles. Junior wide receiver / defensive back Mile Whitlow was third overall in interceptions with three.

Luke Coughlin was ranked in the top-five (4th) in the CSFL in sacks with eight on the year, while finishing in the top-10 (6th) in tackles for loss with 15.

Mac Lavis finished the season sixth overall in the league in scoring and fourth in scoring touchdowns. The senior captain rushed for five TDs in five games, missing action with an injury.

Braydan Chmiel ranked in the top-five in the league in total offense (3rd – 159.4 yds/g), passing yards per game (5th – 134.3 avg/g) and passing efficiency (5th – 146.2).

Sprint played four of the first five games of the season on the road. The Mids won the first three games of the year before dropping the Star Series game with eventual CSFL Champion Army West Point.

Following a 41-14 victory on the road against Mansfield, Sheppard Wilson was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Jared Swenson was dubbed Special Teams Player of the Week.

Jared Swenson tallied nine points in Navy’s 33-0 shutout win over Franklin Pierce in the Mids’ home opener to earn his second consecutive CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week award. He finished the game with two field goals and three extra points.
