First Season

First Season

Tom Popp was officially named the assistant water polo coach at the U.S. Naval Academy in July of 2018. A member of the USNA Class of 1989, Popp was a standout for the Midshipmen as an athlete, earning All-America and All-East selection honors, graduating as the all-time leader in career assists in Academy history. He returned to Navy water polo program as an assistant coach alongside former teammate and head coach Luis Nicolao (’92). Popp served as an assistant coach for Navy from 2007-09, helping the Midshipmen to a pair of CWPA Eastern titles (2007, ‘08) and a 72-26 record during his three years as a member of the coaching staff. Most recently, Popp established Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C. as a top water polo program in the Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia areas. He coached the varsity team for five seasons (2012, ‘13, ’15, ’16, ‘17) with Gonzaga’s water polo program founder, Joe Viola. In his fourth year at the helm, Popp led Gonzaga to an Eastern Prep Championship in November 2016. A native of San Jose, Calif., Popp was a two-time high school water polo All-American at Bellarmine College Preparatory under legendary coach Larry Rogers. While playing for Navy under head coach Mike Schofield from 1985-88, Popp helped lead Navy to three Eastern Division Championships (1986, ’87, ‘88) and three NCAA tournament appearances. A two-time MVP of the Eastern Division (1987, ‘88), he also earned AllAmerican Honorable Mention in 1987 and third-team All-American honors in 1988. As a senior, Popp was awarded the Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword for Men in 1989, presented to “that man of the graduating class who is considered by the Association’s Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men’s athletics during his years of varsity competition.” During this same period, Popp also played on the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team (1985-87), traveling to Havana, Cuba, several European competitions, the Junior PanAmerican Games in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and the 19 and Under World Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Following his senior NCAA season, he trained with the U.S. Men’s National Team from 1989 through April 1991. Popp was inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame in November 2008, becoming the first Navy representative to be inducted into the CWPA Hall of Fame. After graduating in 1989 with a bachelor of science in Aerospace Engineering, Popp completed naval flight officer training and qualified as an E-2C Hawkeye aircraft mission commander. In January 1995, following deployments aboard the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier, he enacted orders to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and was selected as a U.S. Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS) Cooperative program student. Upon graduating from USNTPS at NAS Patuxent River, Md., in December 1997, Popp was awarded a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, transitioned to the Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer community, and flight tested several new E-2C advanced avionics systems. After his test squadron duty, he served on the staff of Commander U.S. Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet (COMNAVAIRPAC) at NAS North Island in Coronado, Calif., (February 2000 to April 2002). He returned to NAS Patuxent River in May 2002 as the AEDO Community Manager within Naval Air Systems Command. Subsequently, he assumed the T-45 Integrated Product Team (IPT) lead for the Naval Undergraduate Training Systems program office (PMA-273) in 2004 before returning to his alma mater in May 2007 to teach in the Aerospace Department. In Oct 2009, Popp became the Naval Air Systems Command liaison officer to the US Coast Guard before he retired from the Navy as a Captain in September 2014. Since then, Popp has been supporting the Naval Enterprise Networks program office (PMW 205) as a civilian task lead for CSA Guidance Consulting at the Washington Navy Yard, while also coaching at Gonzaga. Tom is married to the former Ruth Chasen (Navy ‘89), and the couple has five daughters – Frances, Naomi, Hannah, Mary, and Ellen. Popp and his family reside in Arnold, Md.

Former Navy water polo standout Joe Donahue joined the Midshipmen water polo coaching staff as a volunteer assistant in August of 2018. The Class of 2004 graduate was an All-American for the Mids, while also earning First-Team All-East and AllSouth honors during his playing career. As a senior, Donahue was named Third-Team All-America by the American Water Polo Coaches Association to become the 11th All-American in school history, joining fellow coaches Luis Nicolao and Tom Popp on the list of Navy water polo All-Americans. In his final season in 2003, Donahue, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship and First-Team All-Southern Division, helped lead Navy to its first appearance in the NCAA Final Four since 2000 with an 8-6 win over Princeton in the Eastern Championship game. At the NCAA Final Four, he was voted Second-Team All-Tournament after netting three goals with an assist against Loyola Marymount. Donahue scored a team-high 56 goals as a senior to go along with 20 assists and 37 steals. The two-time First-Team All-East selection (2002, 2003) finished his stellar career with 218 goals, 83 assists and 176 steals. Donahue led the Midshipmen in goals scored his final three seasons, while ranking third on the team as a freshman. The Annapolis native finished his Navy water polo career ranked in the top-5 in points scored (5th) and goals scored (5th). In addition, Donahue was a member of the 1999 U.S. National Youth Team, competing internationally in Hungary and Canada. Prior to enrolling at the Academy, he served as team captain for the Navy Aquatic Club that won the 1999 Eastern High School Championship. Prior to his senior season in 2003, Donahue did summer internship at the State Department in Washington, D.C. Donahue graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2004 with a degree in political science. Following graduation from the Academy, Donahue was a surface warfare officer for seven years (2004-11), completing three deployments in the Middle East and Africa aboard a destroyer and dock landing ship, where he was qualified as an Officer of the Deck and in charge of overall operation and navigation of the ship during watch. Donahue attended the University of Baltimore School of Law, earning his Juris Doctor (JD) degree in May of 2013. While in law school, he worked as a legal intern at the Office of Case Management (OCM) in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. Donahue served as a law clerk at Wise & Donahue, PLC from August 2001 until August 2013 before taking a job as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Nancy Davis-Loomis of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County. In his spare time, Donahue is an avid sailor with over 10 years’ experience sailing 19-38 foot sloop sailboats on the Severn River, Chesapeake Bay, Mission Bay in San Diego, and in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii.

The Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. The leadership and management of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when it hired a commissioner to perform basic scheduling for the 15 member teams. Officiating assignments at the time were performed by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association. The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the conference received its first major challenge, as the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The conference hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director. These two individuals laid the groundwork for the Officiating Bureau that exists today. Today the CWPA is the largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide. Including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, it stands as the only conference of this type. Due to its breadth and influence, the conference plays a pivotal role in the sport of water polo today, which will only increase in the future as it continues to grow. In mid-2016, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) informed the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) that the league’s division into the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NEWPC) and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) was accepted by the organization. The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo conferences will continue to be administered by the Collegiate Water Polo Association office in a format similar to the Division III Middle Atlantic Conference which oversees two conferences (Freedom, Commonwealth) under one umbrella. The division into two conferences is applicable in only men’s competition as the CWPA will continue to be the moniker by which the league’s women’s varsity teams will compete under during the 2017 season. Due to the separation into different conferences, the CWPA Championship (formerly known as the Eastern Championship) ceases following over 40-years of continuous competition.

Who We Are?

The Collegiate Water Polo Association is a non-profit athletic conference comprised of four-year colleges and universities. Unlike other conferences, the CWPA is comprised of both varsity and collegiate club programs which compete for an National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Collegiate Club (NCCC) Championship. A member conference of the NCAA, the purpose of the Association is to serve its membership through a variety of ways, including the coordination of a competitive schedule. 2018 NAVY water polo History of the Game of Water Polo Water Polo began as a sport sometime in the 19th century in England, although the early versions of the activity bear little resemblance to the modern day version played today. The origins of water polo are obscure to say the least but we do know that the word “polo” is the English pronunciation of the Indian word “pulu,” that means ball. Just as the ball game that is played on horseback became known as “polo,” the ball game played in the water became known as “water polo,” the name is the only connection between the sports. The game of water polo was first played in the United States in 1888. It featured the old rugby style of play which looked like American football in the water. “American style” water polo became very popular and by the late 1890’s was played in such places as Madison Square Garden and Boston’s Mechanics Hall, attracting 14,000 spectators to the big national championship games. It is believed that British holiday resort owners invented this rather strange pastime during the mid1800s, in an attempt to attract guests. The first games were played on nearby rivers and lakes, and the game’s passing similarity to horseback polo gave it the name “water polo.” By 1869, a rubber ball had began to replace the original ball which was made from a pig’s stomach. In 1870 the London Swimming Club formulated rules for the sport and hosted the first official game at the Crystal Palace Plunge in London. Games resembled rugby on the water, and were based more on brute strength than athletic skill. Underwater wrestling would leave some players barely conscious when they managed to get to the surface. A common ploy players used was to place the small ball in their swimming trunks and swim underwater towards the goal, where they would score by removing the ball and slamming it onto the pool deck. In 1880, rules were introduced in Scotland to shift the game’s focus to skill over force. A bigger ball, similar to a soccer ball, was used, nets were introduced and players could no longer tackle opponents who did not have possession of the ball. The same rules still apply to today’s game. The game that evolved into contemporary water polo started off as an adaptation of rugby played in lakes and rivers; the object of the game was to “carry” the ball to the opponent’s side. The Scottish rules were adopted throughout Great Britain, and the game quickly caught on in countries like Hungary, Belgium, Germany, Austria and France, which began playing the sport in the late 1800s. In 1888, Water polo was introduced into the United States by English swimming instructor John Robinson. The game featured the old rugby style of play which was much like gridiron football in the water. “American style”

water polo became very popular and by the late 1890’s was played in such venues as the Boston’s Mechanics Hall and Madison Square Garden. The game of the day featured set plays like the “flying salmon,” where the player with the ball leapt through the air from the backs of his teammates to score a goal. Violence was the game’s main attraction. As the sport grew in popularity, so did its level of violence, with little rules to prevent it. In the 1800’s the intent of the game was to place the ball with two hands against the wall at one end of the pool to score. Players often swam underwater in an attempt to gain an advantage, only to be attacked by their defenders in the same manner. In addition to the aggressive play, many of the pools and lakes in which it was played were often poorly filtered and very murky, creating even more mystery regarding the actions that took place beneath the surface. It was not uncommon for players to be dragged from the water unconscious. This may have added to the popularity, with crowds as many as 14,000 attending some games in New York City. In fact, its popularity was so great it was named the first Olympic team sport in 1900. Interestingly enough, women’s water polo was the last Olympic team sport to be added in 2000. Meanwhile, the rest of the world adopted the Scottish rules: Hungary in 1889, Belgium in 1900, Austria and Germany in 1894 and France in 1895. By 1900, water polo was so popular it became the first team sport added to the Olympic Games program and has remained an Olympic sport ever since. Great Britain won gold at each of the first four Olympic Games. In 1911, the Federation International de Natation Amateur (FINA), the international governing body for all amateur water sports, adopted the Scottish rules for all international water polo events. United States continued to play by their own rules until 1912, when, instead of playing their semi-final game in the National Championship tournament, the New York Athletic Club and the Chicago Athletic Association chose to fight instead. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) cancelled its sponsorship of water polo until 1914 when United States clubs finally agreed to play under the more civilized international rules. Over the years the game has evolved to more of a soccer style in which an opponent could only make contact if a player held the ball. In addition, the evolution of swimming changed the game from brute strength underwater to one of passing and speed above the surface. Women were not allowed to compete at the Olympics until the 2000 Games in Sydney, where Australia won the gold medal, the United States took the silver, and the bronze went to Russia. The first Water Polo World Cup for women was held by FINA (the sport’s governing body) in 1979, and the first World Championships took place in 1986.

RAISE THE SAIL

The most notorious incident in the history of Olympic water polo took place during the 1956 match between the Soviet Union and Hungary. Four weeks prior to the Games, 200,000 Soviet troops invaded Hungary to suppress an anti-Communist uprising, so there was plenty of bad blood between the two sides before the scrappy game started. The game was marred by brawls and became so brutal that officials called it off altogether. Hungary was leading 4-0 at the time and was declared the winner; the team advanced to the finals and won the gold. Hungary has also fielded some of the most celebrated water polo players of all time. Dezso Gyarmati won a medal at five different Olympics from 1948-1964 (3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze). Oliver Halassy, who represented Hungary three times between 1928-1936, won 2 gold and 1 silver. What makes his medal count even more extraordinary is that Halassy had one of his legs amputated below the knee as a child. Hungarians are well-known for their extraordinary play in the water. Hungary has won the most medals in Olympic water polo history, with a total of thirteen, including 7 gold, four of them coming between 19321956. Like other notable southern European nations, such as Italy, Spain and Yugoslavia, its national team draws its players from a pool of talent that plays in the professional leagues. Water polo within the United States was adopted as a championship sport for men in the collegiate system in the early 70’s, while women were added about 30 years later as participation grew. Today, collegiate and high school teams can be found throughout the country. Internationally the game is played all over the world, with Europe and Asia boasting the world’s strongest programs for men. The USA is the only non-European team to win Olympic medals. In addition to the gold won by the New York Athletic Club in 1904, the United States men’s program won silver medals in 1984 and 1988 and bronze medals in 1924, 1932 and 1972. The recent addition of women’s water polo paints a different story for dominance, as Canada and the United States often vie for top billing with the world’s best as the Americans have proven to be among the world’s best repeatedly contending for the Olympic and World Championship titles.
